Xbox Series S might be revealed during May hardware showcase
- Microsoft is reportedly preparing to reveal a cheaper next-gen console called the Xbox Series S.
- The Xbox Series S (codename “Lockhart”) will have 4TB of performance compared to the 12TB of the Xbox Series X, but will retain many of the next-gen console’s most important features.
- Microsoft is rumored to be preparing a hardware showcase for Surface and Xbox devices in May.

Sony has made headlines with some exciting next-gen announcements over the past few weeks, including the reveal of the DualSense controller that will ship with the PlayStation 5, but Microsoft still has a sizable lead when it comes to what we know about its plans for 2020. While the design of the PS5 is still unknown, we’ve seen the Xbox Series X powered on and running games. But that’s not to say Microsoft is out of secrets to share.
For months, we’ve been hearing that the next generation of Xbox consoles will follow a similar trajectory as that of the current generation, with a premium model (Xbox One X) and a more affordable model (Xbox One S) on the market at the same time. The cheaper model — which has been referred to as the “Xbox Series S” — has yet to be officially unveiled, but that might change next month if recent reports are to be trusted.

Astronomers spotted a massive exoplanet, and then it disappeared
- Exoplanet Fomalhaut b (also known as Dagon) disappeared before astronomers’ eyes after being detected multiple times.
- A new theory suggests the would-be planet was actually a cloud of debris left over from a collision between two large icy objects.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It wasn’t that long ago that astronomers could only dream of discovering worlds outside of our solar system. These days, exoplanet discoveries come at a regular pace, with new planets being spotted by the handful thanks to ever-more-powerful telescopes and detection systems. But what happens when scientists spot a planet and then it completely disappears?
That’s the predicament researchers found themselves in after Dagon, a massive gas giant exoplanet originally spotted in 2004 by the Hubble Space Telescope suddenly vanished. Now, researchers have a new theory as to what they actually saw, and it’s even more exciting than discovering a new planet.

Brand new gaming phone may spell doom for Google’s Pixel 5
- A new gaming phone from Chinese smartphone maker Nubia was unveiled, rocking the same chipset that’s rumored to power the upcoming Pixel 5.
- The Nubia Play 5G’s great set of specs and affordable price might put additional pressure on Android handsets, Pixel 5 included.
- The new Nubia phone will start at just $340 in China, which is even cheaper than the upcoming Pixel 4a.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It’s only mid-April, and the Pixel 5 isn’t supposed to launch for another five months, but we’ve already seen various Pixel 5 leaks that aren’t very flattering. The phone that should compete against the iPhone 11 and Galaxy S20 is widely believed to feature mid-range specs. Specifically, the phone is expected to feature a mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip over the Snapdragon 865 that powers the Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8. This would be a first for the Pixel series, and it’s all Qualcomm’s fault, according to a recent report. The 865 needs a 4G/5G chip and is more expensive than the 765G that comes with a 4G/5G modem built-in. Google is already rumored to be working on its own custom mobile chip for the Pixel series, but the processor won’t be ready until next year.
We’ve already explained why the new iPhone SE might be Google’s worst nightmare. The cheap new iPhone will be more powerful that a 765G-based Pixel 5, which will make the phone a tough sell. But it turns out that’s not the only phone that might make it even harder for Google to sell Pixel phones this year.

NASA’s Mars 2020 rover just hit a crucial pre-launch milestone
- NASA’s Mars 2020 rover Perseverance just got spun around in the name of science.
- The rover endured several days of balance testing, gaining some weight to ensure that its center of gravity is exactly where it needs to be for a safe trip and landing on Mars.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA is rapidly approaching the launch of its Mars 2020 mission, and with so much riding on a successful launch and trip to the Red Planet, the space agency is taking its preparation one step at a time. Most recently, the rover Perseverance spent three full days undergoing the delicate process of balance testing.
It might not sound like a crucial step, but ensuring that the rover is correctly balanced is incredibly vital. As the Mars 2020 mission leaves Earth and begins its long journey to Mars, weight discrepancies could not only cause the spacecraft to fly inaccurately but perhaps even endanger the rover once it’s ready to make its descent to the planet’s surface.

5G iPad Pro with mini-LED display reportedly delayed to 2021
- Apple was expected to launch its first 5G iPad Pro this fall, but the launch has reportedly been delayed to 2021 due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
- The 2021 iPad Pro will feature a mini-LED display and support for 5G cellular networking.
- Apple’s 5G iPhone models are still on track to debut this fall.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
By most accounts, the first 5G iPhone will make its debut this fall despite the chaos caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Some reports claim that Apple is behind schedule, but the general consensus is that the iPhone 12 will be out before the end of the year, even if it comes slightly later than its expected September release date. But it appears that the first 5G iPad may have a different fate, if a new report is to be believed.
Economic Daily News in Taiwan reports that Apple has decided to delay the launch of its 12.9-inch 5G iPad Pro from the second half of this year to the spring of 2021. Initially, rumors suggested that Apple would launch a new iPad Pro model in the spring (which was revealed last month) and a second in the fall.

Anti-malaria drug Trump touted as a coronavirus cure isn’t effective
- A recent study showed that the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine was not particularly effective in treating coronavirus patients.
- President Trump has been advocating hydroxychloroquine as a cure-all for COVID-19 patients, though a number of medical professionals have urged the public to be cautious pending further studies.
- Additional studies involving hydroxychloroquine are set to begin over the next few weeks.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
President Donald Trump over the past few weeks has been aggressively pushing an anti-malaria drug called hydroxychloroquine as an effective treatment for coronavirus patients. Trump’s optimism surrounding the drug was especially peculiar given some of the reservations expressed by a number of medical professionals, including Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“I think we’ve got to be careful that we don’t make that majestic leap to assume that this is a knockout drug,” Fauci said last week. “We still need to do the kinds of studies that definitively prove whether any intervention, not just this one, any intervention is truly safe and effective.”

Here’s what happens when a coronavirus contact tracer calls you
- Coronavirus cases are still on the rise in the US, even as the Trump administration is pushing for the country to slowly start reopening again.
- Coronavirus testing, along with complementary contact tracing, is going to be the key element for ending quarantines and lockdown orders around the US as the fight against the virus enters a new phase.
- Here’s a look at what the contact tracing process entails.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If the US has any hope anytime soon of gradually reopening the country and our economy, everything from local restaurants and other businesses to larger industries like airlines and hotels, without sparking an unsustainable new outbreak of coronavirus cases, here’s the thing. We have to have a much more robust testing and surveillance infrastructure than we do now, full stop. It’s not a matter of seeing the case numbers start to gradually decline and thinking it’s safe — if we don’t do this right, there’s a strong likelihood will be putting ourselves in an even worse position than before.
For that not to happen, we have to do two things you’ll keep hearing over and over again as we move into this new phase of the crisis (the reopening): Testing, but also “contact tracing.” Most of us have heard and seen that phrase a lot in the news recently, but what exactly does that mean? What does contract tracing entail, and how does it work?

WHO says the coronavirus pandemic is about to get even worse
- The World Health Organization (WHO) says “the worst” of the novel coronavirus pandemic is yet to come.
- The organization didn’t explain how the worst of a virus that has infected more than 2.4 million people and killed at least 170,000 of them had yet to arrive.
- The WHO also says that politics “may fuel further this pandemic.”
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It’s been almost exactly three months since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the United States, and most of the country has been locked down for more than thirty days now. The curve has begun to flatten in some of the areas that were hit the hardest by the disease, but even though discussions about how to restart the economy have begun in earnest, the World Health Organization reminded us this week that we aren’t out of the woods yet.
“Without national unity and global solidarity, trust us, the worst is yet ahead of us,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday from the organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. “Let’s prevent this tragedy. It’s a virus that many people still don’t understand.”

Apple to release cheaper 23-inch iMac and 11-inch iPad this year
- Apple plans to release an affordable 23-inch iMac later this year.
- This would be the first iMac with a 23-inch display and it could replace the current 21.5-inch model.
- Apple is also planning to release a budget-friendly 11-inch iPad this coming fall.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Apple later this year plans to introduce an affordable 23-inch iMac along with a more budget-friendly 11-inch iPad, according to a new report from the China Times. While we’ve heard rumblings that a cheaper iMac was in the works, this is the first time we’ve seen a reference to an iMac with a 23-inch display.
As it stands now, the entry-level iMac comes with either a 21.5-inch or 27-inch display. If the rumored 23-inch iMac actually comes to market, it will likely be positioned as a replacement for the 21.5-inch iMac. After all, there’s not much logic behind selling a 21.5-inch iMac and a 23-inch iMac. With that said, it’s entirely possible that Apple’s new iMac will boast the same form factor as the current 21.5-inch iMac, albeit with a bigger display thanks to thinner bezels.

Chinese doctors had their skin turn black from coronavirus treatment
- Two 42-year-old Chinese doctors from Wuhan, where the COVID-19 pandemic started, had their skin turn black due to liver issues.
- A hormonal imbalance that may be tied to a mysterious treatment may be to blame for the change in skin color. The condition is expected to go away once liver function improves.
- Both patients have been hooked up to ECMO machines for an extended period, with one of them having been in the hospital for 100 days.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Just when you thought you had seen everything about the novel coronavirus and no news can shock you, you come over the photo below that features two recovering COVID-19 patients. Both of them are from China, and both of them are doctors who were infected with SARS-CoV-2. They’ve been recovering from the disease after battling it for months in hospitals in China. What’s so strange about these cases? The skin of both doctors turned black, possibly as a result of hormonal imbalances following liver complications caused by the virus. At the same time, however, the reports note that the two doctors have been undergoing a particular type of treatment that may be responsible for these bizarre side-effects. Unfortunately, it’s unclear what that medicine was.
