Coronavirus tests: First at-home kit authorized by FDA

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Testing for the COVID-19 coronavirus, in addition to contact tracing to help health workers zero in on the virus’ spread, will be significantly more important in the coming days as the Trump administration and state and local leaders around the US try to figure out how to reopen the country and economy responsibly.
  • Along those lines, the FDA on Tuesday announced its approval of the first at-home coronavirus testing kit, allowing patients to gather their own samples to be sent off to a lab for analysis.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It was bound to happen eventually, and now the first coronavirus testing kit for at-home collection has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA announced its approval on Tuesday of a home collection option for LabCorp’s COVID-19 RT-PCR Test, which allows the company to test samples patients have collected by utilizing the approved kit that contains nasal swabs and saline. Once patients have self-swabbed to obtain a sample, they mail it off inside an insulated package to LabCorp for testing — and LabCorp’s plan is to make this home collection kit eventually available to consumers in most states.

A scary new coronavirus complication is puzzling doctors

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Some coronavirus patients have been shown to have kidney damage, though doctors aren’t sure why.
  • The virus may be directly affecting the kidney’s cells, or the damage may be a side effect of reduced blood oxygen levels.
  • Researchers are still working to determine the cause of COVID-19 kidney damage.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 causes a number of symptoms that are well-known to doctors. Patients often endure a fever, fatigue, and in the more severe cases, breathing troubles and lung damage is possible. However, as the outbreak continues, medical professionals and researchers are noticing kidney damage in some coronavirus patients, and they can’t explain why.

The kidneys clean the blood, and they’re vitally important to the healthy functioning of the human body. Unfortunately, they may be susceptible to coronavirus due to the virus’s ability to bind to a specific receptor on certain cells.

This game-changing coronavirus therapy is already saving lives

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • There’s no magical drug to treat the novel coronavirus at this time, although several promising medicines are in clinical trials.
  • The only game-changing therapy is something the medical community has used for more than 100 years to treat infectious diseases, and it still works.
  • Plasma transfusions from COVID-19 survivors are saving lives, as the transferred antibodies have been able to speed up the recovery times of critical patients.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There’s no miracle cure for the novel coronavirus disease right now and that’s why the best thing to do to avoid the condition is to self-isolate for a while longer. You’re not just buying yourself time, but also giving researchers time to evaluate the various drugs that are used in clinical trials to determine whether they can alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, prevent complications, and hasten recovery times. Hydroxychloroquine may or may not work, but it’s not a game-changer for the time being, no matter what you hear on TV. The promising drug remdesivir isn’t a miracle cure either until the science says so. But we already have a game-changing therapy right now, one that’s already saving lives in trials and that could become the main COVID-19 therapy that can fix various problems until a vaccine is ready. It’s antibody-filed plasma from patients who have survived the disease.

Hurry and get Sony’s $230 AirPods Pro-killer WF1000XM3 earbuds for $119

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • With a retail price of $249, Apple’s AirPods Pro active noise cancelling true wireless earbuds are among the most expensive ANC earbuds on the market despite their popularity.
  • Many personal audio experts are of the opinion that the Sony WF1000XM3 ANC earbuds are better than AirPods Pro in every key area despite the fact that they retail for $20 less.
  • $228 is a great price for Sony’s class-leading noise cancelling earbuds, but if you hurry you can get a pair on Amazon for just $119.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple’s AirPods Pro active noise cancelling true wireless earbuds are on sale right now over at Amazon, and our readers have been buying them up by the hundreds. It’s easy to see why, of course, since they’re down to Black Friday’s all-time low price on Amazon. That means there has literally never been a better time to buy a pair of these wildly popular earbuds. That said, if you’re not married to the idea of getting Apple earphones, there’s a much better deal that you should check out before it disappears.

The Sony WF1000XM3 true wireless noise cancelling earbuds are actually less expensive at full retail than Apple’s discounted AirPods Pro. Apple fans are obviously used to paying the “Apple tax” to get the best possible user experience but when it comes to cord-free ANC earphones, that’s actually not the case. Personal audio experts and headphones reviewers largely agree that the Sony buds are superior to AirPods Pro in terms of sound quality, design, and noise cancellation technology. In other words, the Sony WF1000XM3 earphones are better than AirPods Pro in literally every single way that matters most.

Amazon was running a sale last week on Sony WF1000XM3 wireless earbuds that slashed the price from $228 down to $198. That matches Black Friday’s sale price from last year, so it’s obviously a fantastic deal. The bad news for anyone looking to pick up a pair is that deal is now done. But the good news is an even better opportunity just popped up and you can take advantage if you hurry.

Sony WF-1000XM3 True Wireless Bluetooth Noise Canceling in-Ear Headphones Black (Renewed): $119.00

Head over to Amazon right now and you’ll find Sony WF1000XM3 ANC cord-free earbuds on sale for just $119 if you pick them up renewed. That’s the lowest price of all time at Amazon, and it’s a truly incredible value for what are arguably the best active noise cancelling earphones on the planet.

If you’re worried about buying these earbuds renewed, rest assured that you really shouldn’t be. As it notes on the Amazon page, “Renewed products work and look like new. These pre-owned products have been inspected and tested by Amazon-qualified suppliers. Box and accessories may be generic. All Renewed products come with the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.” In other words, they’re guaranteed to work and look like new or you can return them with 90 days for a full refund, no questions asked. That’s a terrific policy but trust us: after you hear how incredible these earphones sound, you’re definitely not going to want to return them. Supply is limited though, and once these earphones sell out there’s no telling when or even if they’ll be back in stock at this price.

As the novel coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe, concerned citizens stockpiled all manner of disinfectant chemicals and cleaners. Waging their own personal wars on the virus by sanitizing their homes from top to bottom, the dramatic increase in the use of such cleaners appears to have had an unintended effect: poisonings.

The number of accidental poisonings related to cleaners and home chemicals has seen a dramatic spike in the first quarter of 2020. Year-over-year, the number of poisonings is up a whopping 20%, and researchers from the CDC believe the coronavirus pandemic is the driving force.

Doctors discover why severe coronavirus cases are more common in men

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Men are more likely to die of a novel coronavirus infection than women, as statistical data has shown since the emergence of the new virus.
  • Some research indicates that it’s lifestyle differences that put men at risk of complications from a COVID-19 infection.
  • A new study shows that the women might recover faster than men because the coronavirus binds to a substance that’s found in the testicles, not just the lungs, heart muscle, kidneys, and GI tract.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus mostly kills old people and patients who have other underlying conditions, as we have heard ever since the early days of the outbreak. As the epidemic progressed and turned into a pandemic, we learned that men are more likely than women to experience severe cases of COVID-19 and die from complications. A study about a month ago theorized that coronavirus is killing more men than women because of several lifestyle choices particular to each gender. Men are more likely to engage in reckless behavior, including smoking and drinking. Those habits could then lead to health conditions that could endanger their lives in the event of a COVID-19 infection. Since then, other studies have said that smoking, marijuana use, and alcohol are all risk factors for COVID-19, as are obesity and other medical conditions. An older overweight man suffering from diabetes and heart disease might have a hard time dealing with the infection, and he might develop more complications than a woman.

It turns out that it’s not just lifestyle choices that may have a direct effect on the gender disparity when it comes to COVID-19 prognosis. Having a pair of testicles is apparently enough to worsen your odds when fighting a COVID-19 infection, or at least delay your recovery.

The Nest Learning Thermostat just dropped to $199 at Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google’s Nest Thermostat models are widely believed to be the best smart thermostats on the market, and they’re on sale today at the lowest prices we’ve seen in a long time on Amazon.
  • The Nest Thermostat E is a good deal at $139, a $30 discount that matches Black Friday’s price from last year.
  • If you want an even better deal, however, the flagship Nest Learning Thermostat gets a massive discount to just $199, which is actually lower than it was last year on Black Friday.
  • Both models are in stock and shipping immediately rather than sometime in May like other nonessential goods on Amazon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When it comes to smart home products, there are some gadgets that are much smarter than others. Then at the top of the smart home pile, there are a handful of devices that you’d have to be crazy to pass on. A good smart thermostat is at the top of the list.

You might be wondering why a good smart thermostat is so essential and there are two different reasons. The first is that it’s good for the environment, which some people might care about more than others. By decreasing the amount of energy your home heating and cooling systems use, you’re burning through fewer resources. But the second reason is something everyone can get behind: A smart thermostat saves you money.

Google, T3007ES, Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, Smart Thermostat, Stainless Steel, Works Wi…: $199.00

Devices like the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat use smart features to decrease the amount of time your HVAC systems run. The less they run, the less you pay — it’s that simple. The prices of the thermostats themselves really don’t matter at all since they pay for themselves in savings. Then once they’ve paid for themselves, the rest of the money you’ll inevitably save goes straight into your pockets.

Of course, the sooner your smart thermostat pays for itself the sooner you start pocketing those savings, so now is a great time to buy one because Amazon is offering some fantastic deals. In fact, the Nest Thermostat E is on sale today for the same price it was on Black Friday. On top of that, the Nest Learning Thermostat is on sale with a gigantic $50 discount that drops the price to just $199, which is even lower than the deals we saw last year ahead of the holidays. It’s also worth noting that Amazon is shipping these smart thermostats out soon rather than sometime in May like most nonessential products.
