One of the rarest creatures in North America just popped up to say hi
- The Sierra Nevada red fox was just spotted for the first time in years at Yosemite National Park.
- The population of the species is so incredibly low that some estimates suggest there may be as few as 10 adults left in the wild.
- Conservationists are trying to give the foxes a fighting chance at survival, but observing the in the wild has proven to be a massive challenge.

An incredibly rare species of fox was just spotted for the first time half a decade, giving conservationists hope that the species might somehow manage to claw its way back from the brink of extinction. The Sierra Nevada red fox was spotted via trail camera in an area of Yosemite National Park where the fox had not been seen since observations began in 2011.
When a species is so rare that it entirely disappears for years at a time, it can be difficult for wildlife experts and conservationists to even know if it still exists. As populations dwindle and total numbers dip below the triple digits, finding the surviving members is an incredible challenge.

A number of tech companies over the past few weeks have devoted significant resources to the ongoing fight against the coronavirus. Earlier this month, for instance, Apple and Google announced an ambitious opt-in program — that operates via Bluetooth — that will allow users to see if they’ve come into close contact with anyone who previously tested positive for the coronavirus.
More recently, Microsoft today launched a brand new online screening tool called the CoVIg-19 Plasma Bot that helps individuals determine if they’re eligible to donate their plasma for coronavirus research purposes. Notably, Microsoft’s efforts here are part of the broader CoVIg-19 Plasma Alliance which is comprised of a number of highly regarded biotech companies.

With everything else going on in the world right now, the last thing that any of us need to deal with is having one of our online accounts hacked. Unfortunately, this is a reality that some people are being forced to deal with, as multiple Nintendo Switch owners chimed in on social media sites and online message boards this weekend claiming that their Nintendo Accounts had been accessed by unauthorized third parties.
One of the tweets to go viral came from LootPots founding editor Pixelpar, who revealed on Sunday that his account had been “accessed numerous times overnight.” He says that his password is a unique string and that his PC hadn’t been compromised. But his tweet was just the tip of the iceberg.

Coronavirus could have an effect on beer and soda production
- The novel coronavirus pandemic has all sorts of unforeseen consequences, and the latest one concerns the food industry.
- Beer and soda makers might not be able to procure the CO2 supply needed to make fizzy drinks as a result of the drop in ethanol production.
- Ethanol is tied to the oil industry, and a drop in gasoline demand during COVID-19 lockdowns has impacted ethanol production.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus has infected millions of people in three months, killing more than 166,000 of them around the world as of Monday morning. COVID-19 fundamentally changed life as we knew it. Jobs, sports, movies, gadget launches, and the ability to go outside at will have all been affected by the new virus.
Because there’s no cure or vaccine, and we have yet to find a treatment that can prevent complications and reduce death rates, social distancing is one of the only tools we have to fight SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 disease. But that’s not enough to save the industries being affected. Even strawberries are in peril, and you can add beer and your favorite flavor of soda to the list of products that may be hurt by the coronavirus pandemic.

This was the last awesome image NASA’s Spitzer telescope captured before it died
- NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope fired back one last gorgeous photo before it died.
- The telescope was decommissioned in January after serving over 16 long years in space.
- The telescope was only expected to serve up to five years but received multiple extensions and proved to be one of NASA’s most reliable tools.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When NASA launched its Spitzer Space Telescope in 2003 it was hopeful that the spacecraft would spend up to five full years capturing gorgeous images of the cosmos. Five years is a very long time to be scanning the skies, but the space agency believed Spitzer was up for the job. It turns out that five years wasn’t just doable, it was a piece of cake. The spacecraft then went on to spend a total of over 16 years providing scientists with valuable observations.
Spitzer was finally decommissioned on January 30, 2020, but before NASA pulled the plug, it fired back one last, glorious image for us to remember it by.

FDA: You don’t need to wipe down groceries to avoid coronavirus
- There are many important precautions we all need to take to avoid catching and transmitting the novel coronavirus, including staying six feet apart from one another and washing our hands.
- According to the FDA, wiping down food packaging is not a necessity.
- FDA says “there is currently no evidence of human or animal food or food packaging being associated with transmission of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19”
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It has been well over a month since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, but there is still plenty we don’t know about severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and COVID-19 — the disease it causes. We have been told to keep our distance from others (at least six feet) and to wash our hands for at least 20 seconds any time we come into contact with anything outside of our homes. These instructions are clear, but without a specific set of guidelines for everything we do on a daily basis, many concerned individuals are taking drastic steps to keep themselves safe that may not be necessary.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) addressed one of these precautions on its website last week, reassuring those who are wiping down groceries that “there is currently no evidence of human or animal food or food packaging being associated with transmission of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.”

We might finally know when Sony’s new PS5 design will be unveiled
- An analyst believes that several major gaming announcements will come around E3 2020, even though the trade event has been canceled over coronavirus concerns.
- Sony is rumored to hold its main PS5 reveal event in May, where it could unveil the PlayStation 5 design.
- Microsoft supposedly also has plans for new Xbox Series X announcements in the coming months.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The PlayStation 5 is supposed to be released this fall and there are no plans to delay the console, according to a report from a few days ago. But if Microsoft pushes back its Xbox Series X release in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Sony might pull a similar move. The PS5 could have a higher price tag than expected, and it might be available in limited supply initially. Whatever will happen with the PS5 launch, it’s clear that the COVID-19 crisis destroyed Sony’s marketing plans for the new console. The PS5 was one of the most hotly anticipated unannounced products in February, but the coronavirus outbreak may have prompted Sony to cancel its press event. Sony pulled out of various trade shows because of the growing health concerns, after already having announced earlier this year that it wouldn’t be present at E3 2019. Sony confirmed the move well before the world started worrying about the new virus, as the Japanese giant never planned to attend the show.
Microsoft has been the big winner of this phase of the battle between the two consoles. The company unveiled the design of the Xbox Series X in mid-December at a gaming event and then announced the full specs of the console between February and March, developing quite a lead on Sony. We did see Sony unveil the PS5 specs as well a few weeks ago in one of the most boring events ever to have been streamed on YouTube. And then, the company unveiled the new DualSense controller for the new console. The PS5 design is still missing in action, but it looks like it could be revealed as soon as next month.

Facebook shares US county heat maps tracking coronavirus symptoms
- Facebook teamed up with Carnegie Mellon University to survey individuals about potential coronavirus symptoms that they might be exhibiting.
- Facebook is using this data to produce heat maps of COVID-19 symptoms on a county-by-county basis across the entirety of the United States.
- Later this week, Facebook will expand its surveys globally to assist other countries.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic isn’t going to end until we either have a reliable treatment or an effective vaccine. In the meantime, the best way to control the spread is to test as many people as possible, use contact tracing to identify those who came into contact with the infected individuals, and make sure they all self-isolate so that they don’t infect anyone else. This is clearly easier said than done, but on Monday, Facebook introduced a valuable tool that should help governments decide where to allocate their resources based on the spread of the virus.
In recent weeks, Facebook has been prompting users to take a survey conducted by Carnegie Mellon University. The survey asks respondents about disease symptoms, and Facebook is now using this data to produce county-by-county maps showing where COVID-19 symptoms are most frequently being experienced.

Here’s how to get your $1,200 stimulus check faster
- The IRS last week started making $1,200 payments to eligible taxpayers via direct deposit.
- For taxpayers who don’t have direct deposit set up, the IRS is planning to mail out checks over the next few months.
- For people who want to receive their $1,200 stimulus check faster, the IRS has an online tool where users can enter their banking account information online and receive payment via direct deposit.

The impact of the coronavirus on the U.S. economy has been nothing short of staggering. Nearly all non-essential businesses have been closed for weeks on end and millions of Americans, as a result, have lost their jobs. As it stands now, an estimated 10% of the entire U.S. workforce is without work on account of the coronavirus and, in turn, unemployment claims are historic levels.
In light of that, President Trump a few weeks ago signed a $2 million stimulus package that calls for all eligible Americans to receive a one-time $1,200 payment. The obvious goal here is to help individuals and families get through an economic downturn that may come to rival the Great Depression. While the coronavirus seems to have peaked in many areas, there’s still no telling when businesses will re-open and life will return to normal.

Strange new coronavirus symptoms have been uncovered
- The most frequent coronavirus symptoms are also encountered in the common cold or flu, which can make it difficult to correctly diagnos if COVID-19 testing isn’t available.
- The disease does have a few peculiar symptoms of its own like the loss of taste and smell, but also frostbite-like lesions and other dermatological problems.
- The CDC lists “bluish lips or face” as an emergency warning sign for COVID-19 that requires immediate medical attention.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus has a few common symptoms that can be very misleading. Fever, cough, fatigue, and muscle pain are also typical of the common cold or flu, as are chills, shaking, headache, and sore throat. Interestingly enough, not all patients with a sore throat and other common symptoms actually have the disease, said a recent study. Shortness of breath can also appear, and breathing issues are common for other ailments. But doctors who have observed COVID-19 patients have been able to identify a slew of other symptoms that might be indicative of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The sudden loss of smell and taste is one of the most popular signs of COVID-19. It’s been studied and explained, and it’s now associated with the new disease. Other neurological or cardiac manifestations have been observed in patients who may have not experienced other symptoms. And if you encounter skin lesions similar to frostbite, or you have bluish lips or face, then you might have COVID-19.
