Xanax, a common anxiety medication, might actually block coronavirus
- A standard coronavirus treatment is still unavailable, although researchers have made significant progress at developing new protocols for existing drugs and adapting them for COVID-19. Promising new drugs and vaccines are also in the works.
- The search for a COVID-19 cure has prompted scientists in Spain to study existing meds and see whether they can inhibit the coronavirus’s ability to replicate inside the body.
- The researchers identified seven molecules out of more than 6,400 drugs, including Xanax, a widely used anti-anxiety treatment.
The novel coronavirus pandemic brought plenty of sorrow and pain, as we learned how devastating COVID-19 can be. But there’s been plenty of good in all of this, and that doesn’t have to go unnoticed. It’s not just what the armies of doctors and first responders have been doing for the past few months, but also the immense amount of work that researchers put into studying SARS-CoV-2 to find ways to limit the transmission, and cure COVID-19 much faster than what is currently possible. Therapy protocols are already being used successfully around the world to save patients. Plasma transfusions work and antibody-based drugs are in the works. Several vaccine trials have progressed faster than we would have imagined, and the world is optimistic about their chances of success.
The work hasn’t stopped there, as researchers are still trying to figure out how to neutralize the virus once it infects the body. Scientists have looked at specific characteristics in meds that could hinder the virus’s ability to replicate inside cells, and they have shortlisted seven existing human and animal drugs that might do the trick. The list includes the extremely common anxiety drug Alprazolam (Xanax), as well as six other meds, two of which have already shown promising results in labs.

A gang of monkeys stole coronavirus blood samples from a lab because 2020 wasn’t weird enough
- The latest coronavirus update out of India is that the country is fast becoming one of the new hotspots during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- To date, India has seen almost 170,000 coronavirus infections.
- If that wasn’t bad enough, a gang of monkeys recently stole a sample of positive coronavirus blood samples from a medical college there.
This certainly ranks as one of the most bizarre incidents to occur so far during the pandemic roiling the globe, with the latest coronavirus update showing more than 5.8 million infections around the world and more than 361,000 deaths globally from the virus. That’s according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University, and while that does as good as anything of illustrating the scope of the coronavirus crisis that’s hitting the US particularly hard, it obviously doesn’t encompass every story of how the virus is unfolding around the world — including the particularly strange ones, like the group of monkeys in India that in recent days attacked a lab assistant and pilfered a batch of blood samples from coronavirus patients who’d tested positive for the virus. 2020 wasn’t crazy enough, right?

Roku Express HD is down to $24 at Amazon, and the Roku Stick+ is $49
- If you’re looking for a Roku Stick with Amazon Prime shipping or an even better deal on the entry-level Roku Express HD that has been flying off the virtual store shelves at Amazon, today is your lucky day.
- Roku’s Express HD streaming media player is on sale right now for just $24, which matches the device’s all-time lowest price.
- If you want an upgrade that supports 4K resolution and HDR content, the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ is down to just $49 today with free Prime shipping.
- Delivery times are already beginning to slip, so you’re likely almost out of time to score these deals.
The big news this week when it comes to popular streaming media players is that Amazon’s Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K have been discounted for the first time since early February. They’re both $10 off right now, which means you can pick one up for as little as $29.99. That’s a terrific price indeed, but there’s another big sale you should definitely check out before you buy one.
If you prefer Roku devices to Amazon’s Fire TV lineup, don’t worry because we’ve got a pair of deals for you that might be even better. One is on Roku’s entry-level streaming device — the wildly popular Roku Express HD — and the second is on the Roku Streaming Stick+, which might be the most beloved streamer that Roku makes.
Starting with the entry-level model, the Roku Express HD was updated for 2019 and it’s one of the most affordable streaming media players out there. You get access to every streaming service you have ever heard of along with dozens and dozens of services you’ve probably never heard of. On top of that, you get The Roku Channel, which aggregates all sorts of great movies and TV shows that you can stream for free. It’s shipping out next week and it’s only $29 at Amazon.
Roku Express HD Streaming Media Player 2019: $24.00
There are three things you won’t get with the Express HD that might make it worth the upgrade. First, you won’t get a compact dongle form factor — it’s still compact, but it’s not a dongle. Second, you won’t get support for content that streams in 4K resolution. And third, you won’t get support for the vivid colors that come along with HDR content. For all that, you’ll need the Roku Streaming Stick+, which just so happens to be on sale today for under $49 instead of $60. That price matches Amazon’s sale from this past Black Friday, so it’s definitely a great deal. On top of that, it ships out even sooner than the Express HD model.
Roku Streaming Stick+ | HD/4K/HDR Streaming Device with Long-range Wireless and Voice Remote wi…: $49.00

The most important thing you can do to stop the novel coronavirus
- Coronavirus face masks are critical to stopping the novel virus, a new study confirms, referencing recent work that shows how easily the COVID-19 pathogen can travel in the air and infect other people.
- Face masks can block invisible particles in aerosols and reduce coronavirus transmission, and they’re also effective at stopping the asymptomatic carriers from spreading the virus.
- The use of face masks is highly advised in communities that reopen their economies, and they’re absolutely crucial until better COVID-19 treatments are available.
We’ve come a long way in the last two months when it comes to the use of face masks against the novel coronavirus. As more evidence started piling in about the SARS-CoV-2’s ability to float in the air for longer periods and reach distances over 6 feet, the CDC changed its stance on the use of face masks in early April when it started advising people to use any kind of face protection when going out. It became clear that authorities were trying to prevent panic and face mask shortages at a time when healthcare professionals were complaining about the lack of proper personal protective equipment.
In the weeks that followed, more studies came out showing how easily the coronavirus can spread. We’ve learned that a single person infected as many as 52 choir members in under 3 hours during a practice session in mid-March. Other researchers proved that talking loudly is enough to eject tiny droplets that can contain pathogens and infect other people. As that happened, we’ve started witnessing a strange phenomenon as well, a rebellion against the use of face masks that even includes prominent figures like Trump.
The bottom line is that face masks are a key weapon against the virus, and a new study makes it clear that it’s critical to wear them anytime you’re outside your home.

Here are Amazon’s 5 best-selling electronics devices of the week
- As has been the case for the past couple of months, coronavirus face masks and hand sanitizers were the best-selling products for our readers this past week.
- As far as electronics products go, however, there are some terrific deals this week that catapulted a few products in particular to the top of Amazon’s charts.
- Here, we take a look at the five best-selling electronics products on Amazon’s entire site this week.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As has been the case since the novel coronavirus outbreak began in the US, the most popular products right now among BGR Deals readers are face masks and hand sanitizer. The CDC says on its coronavirus site that we all should wear a face covering every time we leave our homes. You don’t need a medical-grade mask since you’re also going to be practicing strict social distancing and good hygiene. A well-made 3-ply face mask will work wonders to protect you and those around you, and that’s why tens of thousands of our readers have bought them over the past month. Things like bandanas and DIY face masks are okay, but the ones we linked are much better and they’re only $0.70 each right now. Why not take advantage and get some extra protection?
Aside from face masks, electronics are still quite popular among our readers because everyone is looking for new toys to play with while sheltering in place. For example, Apple’s insanely popular AirPods Pro are top sellers since they’re available at a new all-time low price on Amazon, and both AirPods 2 models have been flying off the shelves as well at their lowest prices ever. None of Apple’s headphones are popular enough to make Amazon’s top-5 list this week though, so let’s take a look at the gadgets that did.
5. Apple Watch Series 3
The Apple Watch Series 5 is a fantastic update that is by far the best smartwatch Apple has ever made. That said, all of the device’s features can also be found in the Apple Watch Series 3. The latter, of course, is far less expensive — especially while it’s on sale at Amazon starting at just $179!
Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS, 38mm) – Silver Aluminum Case with White Sport Band: $179.00
4. Fire 7 Tablet
Amazon’s Fire 7 Tablet might not be on sale at a discount this week, but it doesn’t have to be in order to be a top-seller. Why? Because even at its full retail price, this awesome tablet only costs $49.99!
Fire 7 Tablet (7″ display, 16 GB) – Black: $49.99
3. Fire TV Stick 4K
The Echo Dot with Clock was #3 on the list earlier this month, but it got knocked off the list this week by none other than the Fire TV Stick 4K. It’s a fantastic value considering it packs support for 4K resolution and HDR into a tiny dongle, and the Alexa voice remote is great. It’s on sale right now for $39.99 instead of $50, which obviously explains why it’s selling so well right now. Also of note, a lucky few people can snag one for just $24.99 with the coupon code 4KFIRETV. You can learn more about this special deal right here.

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $39.99
2. Echo Dot
The $50 Echo Dot is always a best-seller at Amazon, and a big part of the reason why is because it often goes on sale for even less than $50. Grab one today and you’ll only pay $39.99!
Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Plum: $39.99 (use code DOT2PACK)
1. Fire TV Stick
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is one of the company’s best-selling products of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it tops this week’s list. That’s especially true since it’s on sale this week for just $29.99, which is the lowest price in months. The Fire TV Stick was sold out for a few weeks but now it’s finally back in stock and ready to ship out this week. There’s no telling how long Amazon’s current inventory will last though, so grab one now if you’re in need of a new streaming media player.

Amazon’s first big Fire TV Stick sale in months is almost over
- Whether you’re in the market for a new Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, or a flat-screen television with Amazon’s Fire TV software built right in, today is the day to pull the trigger.
- Every popular Fire TV device out there is on sale right now on Amazon with a deep discount, including the Fire TV Stick for $29.99 and the Fire TV Stick 4K for $39.99.
- Flat-screen TVs with built-in Fire TV software starting at just $149.99 right now, but all of these deals are about to end so you’ll need to act fast.
Amazon has had plenty of great deals lined up this past week that started on Memorial Day 2020, and some of the best bargains have been on the most popular gadgets and gizmos Amazon sells. What’s more, several of the hottest deals out there are still available, like all-time low pricing on Apple AirPods Pro and both versions of AirPods 2. Fire TV devices might be the only devices on Amazon that are even more popular than AirPods though, and they’re all still on sale right now with deep discounts. These deals are likely all set to end today or over the weekend, however, so you’ll have to act fast if you want to get in on the action.
Various Amazon devices have been going on sale for limited periods of time over the past few months despite Amazon’s shift away from nonessential products during the coronavirus outbreak. But one device line that has been left out of Amazon’s sales is the Fire TV lineup. That changed this past week because Amazon began offering deep discounts up to 29% off Fire TV streaming media players and flat-screen televisions with built-in Fire TV software.
The stars of the show are definitely the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K, which get their first big discounts in months. The Fire TV Stick is down to $29.99 for a limited time, matching its lowest price of 2020 so far, and the upgraded Fire TV Stick 4K with support for 4K resolution and HDR content is on sale right now for $39.99. You definitely can’t go wrong with either device.
Fire TV Stick streaming media player with Alexa built in, includes Alexa Voice Remote, HD, easy…: $29.99
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $39.99
If you’re looking for something a bit more comprehensive, the Fire TV Cube is basically a Fire TV Stick 4K and an Echo Dot mixed into a single device. It normally sells for $120 but grab one right now and you’ll pay just $99.99.
Fire TV Cube, hands-free with Alexa built in, 4K Ultra HD, streaming media player, released 201…: $99.99
Those of you looking for an all-inclusive option will also find two fantastic deals on flat-screen televisions that have Fire TV software built right in. The $180 Toshiba TF-32A710U21 32-inch Smart HD TV – Fire TV Edition is on sale at an all-time low of just $149.99, and the new $350 Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 50-inch Smart 4K UHD TV – Fire TV Edition is down to $299.99 if you hurry.

5 possible reasons why you don’t have your coronavirus stimulus check yet
- Millions of Americans still haven’t received their coronavirus stimulus check 2020 payment, which is unfortunate considering the current climate.
- The economic situation for millions of Americans has deteriorated rapidly over the past several weeks. One in four Americans is now unemployed as a result of fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
- There are several reasons why stimulus checks still haven’t arrived yet, such as recipients accidentally throwing away the prepaid debit card being sent out to them as well as banks encountering an issue with processing the direct deposit.
Here are two of the many frustrating facts related to the federal government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. One, the economic fallout from the virus is now so acute and so widespread that around 1 in 4 Americans is now out of a job. Two, one of the government’s most high-profile and dramatic moves in the wake of the pandemic was to approve the disbursement of stimulus checks to most Americans — payments that, for individuals, could be as much as $1,200, while married couples could get up to $2,400, plus an extra $500 for each eligible child.
Except, well, that money started to be sent out a couple of months ago now. In waves, which means the checks are going out in batches to only groups of people at a time — leaving millions of you still waiting on your check. A perfect time for the federal government to be taking its time, isn’t it, while the US approaches Great Depression-level joblessness?
