Surprise: Coronavirus-killing UV phone sanitizers are back on Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • We recently told you about a few different smartphone sanitizers on Amazon that use UV-C light to kill bacteria and viruses like the novel coronavirus on smartphones — they sold out within hours of our coverage.
  • Now, in a surprising turn of events, two of the most popular models we have covered in the past few weeks are both back in stock on Amazon and ready to ship out next week.
  • As an added bonus, we also found a tiny portable UV sterilizer that can zap bacteria and viruses on jewelry, and it’s only $17.99 right now if you hurry.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It is believed that there are two main ways people become infected with the novel coronavirus. The first way is by not adhering to strict social distancing guidelines and inhaling “micro-droplets” that float in the air and carry the virus. These microscopic droplets enter the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even just speaks or breathes, and you can easily catch COVID-19 if those droplets get in your mouth, nose, or eyes.

The second common way the novel coronavirus spreads is through contact. Infected people touch surfaces and leave behind active virus that can then be picked up and transmitted when a healthy person touches the same surface. Of course, you can’t just absorb the novel coronavirus through your skin. An infection can occur when you get the virus on your hands and then touch your face. Alternatively, the same infection can happen when you transfer the virus from your hands to the filthy cesspool that is your smartphone, and then ultimately to your face.

Everyone knows smartphones are filthy, but things like Clorox and Lysol wipes are still almost impossible to come by. How should you clean your phone so you can kill bacteria and viruses like the Novel coronavirus? Smartphone sanitizers that use UV light are the best tool for the job, and several popular models that have been best-sellers among our readers are now back in stock at Amazon.

First up, the top-selling HoMedics UV-Clean Phone Sanitizer Case is back and ready to ship. This compact UV cleaner case pops open like an accordion and your phone goes inside. Zip to closed, attach the zipper pull to the magnetic safety, and press the button on the top to start sanitizing. I like to do two passes on each side just to be safe.

HoMedics UV-Clean Phone Sanitizer | Faster Than Any UV Sanitizer On The Market | Kills Up to 99…: $79.99

Next up, we have the HoMedics UV-Clean Portable Sanitizer Bag with much better coverage and much more internal space so you can fit all kinds of other objects apart from just your smartphone. It’s available right now in two colors and a third will be in stock next week — you can save $20 if you opt for that third version and wait a week.

HoMedics UV-Clean Portable Sanitizer | Kills Up to 99.9% of Bacteria & Viruses at The DNA Level…: $79.95

As an added bonus, we also just came across a tiny little sanitizer called the Munchkin Portable UV Sterilizer. It won’t fit a smartphone since it’s so compact, but you can easily carry it with you anywhere and it’s great for sanitizing jewelry and other small objects. Clip the on-site coupon and you can get one right now from Amazon for only $17.99.

Huge iPhone 12 leak is our best look yet at Apple’s totally new design

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A huge iPhone 12 leak provides us with a close look at Apple’s brand new iPhone design.
  • The iPhone 12 Pro models will feature flat edges, similar to the iPhone 5 design.
  • The iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a smaller notch and a larger camera module.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A huge new leak from Max Weinbach and the EverythingApplePro YouTube channel has provided us with our most accurate look yet at Apple’s upcoming and brand new iPhone 12 design. Before delving into the iPhone 12’s features and new form factor, it’s worth noting that Weinbach has supplied accurate information about upcoming iPhone models in the past. Last year, for instance, Weinbach accurately revealed that Apple was going to add a dedicated night mode option to the iPhone 11. So while Apple rumors can sometimes be a dime a dozen, this latest iPhone 12 rumor is particularly credible.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive right in. Now it’s no secret that the iPhone design hasn’t changed all that much over the years. In fact, the current iPhone — with its rounded edges — doesn’t look markedly different from the iPhone 6 which was released all the way back in 2014. And while it’s a nice design, it’s clearly time for something fresh and new. To that end, the iPhone 12 design will feature flatter edges and will be more reminiscent of the iPhone 5. As we highlighted earlier this week, the iPhone 12 will basically look like a smaller version of Apple’s most recent iPad Pro models.

Amazon’s 5 best-selling electronics devices all have deep discounts

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon offers lists of best-selling products across all of its top categories, but our readers are always most interested in the retailer’s best-selling consumer electronics.
  • This week’s list of the five best-selling gadgets on Amazon is packed full of popular items and they’re all on sale right now at discounts.
  • Highlights include the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ for $49, the Echo Dot for $29.99 or $24.99 if you buy two, and the Fire TV Stick 4K that’s up to half off thanks to a secret sale.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Most people are aware that Amazon shares best-sellers lists across all of its top product categories. The nation’s top retailer never actually shares any sales figures, of course, but it’s easy to see which products on Amazon’s site are outselling rivals in each main category.

Sure, Amazon’s best-sellers lists are always a good way to see what’s popular at any given time, but right now they’re particularly useful. Since Amazon has stopped shipping out many nonessential products, Amazon’s best-sellers lists are also a great way to find out which popular products are actually still shipping out in a timely fashion. There are plenty of lists available on Amazon covering all of its most popular product categories, and you can see them all right here on the Amazon site. Our readers are always most interested in the electronics section though, so you’ll find this week’s top 5 best-sellers down below.

5. Roku Streaming Stick+

The Roku Streaming Stick+ is one of the best-selling streaming media players ever, offering high-end features like 4K resolution and support for HDR content in a compact “dongle” form factor. It normally sells for $60, but right now you can pick one up on Amazon for only $49. With that in mind, it’s pretty easy to see why it’s a top-seller this week.

Roku Streaming Stick+ | HD/4K/HDR Streaming Device with Long-range Wireless and Voice Remote wi…: $45.71

4. Roku Express HD

Next up is the Roku Express HD, which was just updated for 2019 and made available at the new lower price of just $29. It doesn’t have the dongle form factor but it is quite compact, so you can easily stow it behind your TV if you want.

Roku Express HD Streaming Media Player 2019: $29.00

3. Echo Dot

Next up is the Echo Dot and Amazon is actually running two different Echo Dot deals this week. First, you can buy a single Echo Dot for just $29.99 instead of $50. If you need new Dots for multiple rooms in your home, you can also pick up two Echo Dots for $24.99 each with promo code DOT2PACK.

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Charcoal: $29.99

2. Fire TV Stick 4K

Amazon’s beloved Fire TV Stick 4K is this week’s number 2 best-seller, thanks in part to the fact that there are two great deals available right now. Some lucky customers can get one at an all-time low of $24.99 with the special coupon code 4KFIRETV, but you’ll have to try the code to see if you’re eligible (more info here). If you’re not, you can also buy two Fire TV Stick 4K devices and get a $20 Amazon credit when you activate them.

China just remembered that 1,300 more people died of coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • China added nearly 1,300 deaths to its total coronavirus casualties, an increase of 50% for Wuhan, the city where the COVID-19 outbreak began.
  • The change reflects the deaths that occurred early in the epidemic. COVID-19 patients died at home, and they were not counted in the official tallies.
  • China’s unexpected change further raises doubts about the country’s official COVID-19 figures.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It can happen to anyone to forget stuff. Whether it’s your car keys that you keep misplacing or 1,290 coronavirus deaths that you didn’t add to what you claim it’s the official tally for your country. That’s how many extra COVID-19 victim China just added to its coronavirus stats, bringing the total death count to 4,632, out of 82,695 cases, at the time of this writing.

When it all began, China was slow to confirm the extent of the health crisis. Then it changed the way it reported cases a few times, confusing western countries, some of which weren’t exactly ready to trust China to begin with. Still, with COVID-19 figures growing at a steady pace in February, it seemed as China was sharing accurate statistics. Then Italy and Spain happened, and then the outbreak hit the US. That’s when simple math threw a massive wrench into China’s COVID-19 reporting.

Forget Zoom, Google Meet and WhatsApp are getting better video calling features

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Video conferencing apps Google Meet and WhatsApp will get a few notable upgrades in the coming weeks.
• Google Meet will get a Zoom-like layout, as well as call quality improvements and new screen-sharing options.
  • WhatsApp will increase the maximum number of people on audio and video calls.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Video conferencing app Zoom was one of the early heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to its straightforward interface. The app is easy to learn and lets anyone connect with others, whether it’s for work and school, or whether it’s for staying in touch with loved ones while social distancing measures are in place. But the more popular Zoom grew, the more people looked at the security and privacy features of the app, discovering that it wasn’t as safe as the company claimed. Zoom calls weren’t entirely end-to-end encrypted, and some Zoom data was spilled over to Facebook, to name just a few of the recent issues. Zoom promised fixes just as more companies instructed staff to move to alternatives.

One of them is Google Meet, which is what Google calls its Hangouts video conferencing app for G Suite subscribers. And Google Meet is about to get even better at competing with Zoom. On top of that, Facebook’s WhatsApp is about to get a massive upgrade of its own, which should fix your personal video calling needs during the novel coronavirus health crisis.

Coronavirus prompts Samsung to cut smartphone production in half

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung will see its smartphone production fall by more than 50% in April due to the coronavirus.
  • Some of Samsung’s biggest factories in countries like Brazil and India have been closed for weeks.
  • The smartphone industry on the whole is reeling and there’s no telling when demand will return to pre-coronavirus levels.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Samsung’s smartphone production is poised to drop by more than 50% this month on account of the coronavirus pandemic. The South Korean tech giant, which typically manufactures 25 million handsets in April, will see that figure drop down to around 10 million units according to a report from The Elec. That’s an astounding 60% decline, to be precise, and the resulting sales drop-off will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the company’s bottom line.

There are a few factors in play here worth mentioning. For starters, Samsung three weeks ago shut down a number of its smartphone factories in Slovakia, South Korea, Brazil, and India in order to comply with government shutdown directives designed to stop the coronavirus from spreading.

Some of you will get HBO Max for free when it launches in May

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • HBO Max’s launch date will be revealed soon, one of the last remaining details to learn about the latest subscription-based streaming video product to launch this year.
  • Others include NBC’s Peacock as well as Quibi, but HBO Max will come roaring out of the gate in a way that neither of those will be able to thanks to its ability to offer HBO’s slate of originals as well as programs and shows from Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, TNT, and much more.
  • Also, Charter subscribers who currently subscribe to HBO can get HBO Max for free.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Even before the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak exploded around the world, this year was already shaping up to be jam-packed on the streaming media front, with the launch of a handful of high-profile new streaming video services including Quibi, NBC’s streamer Peacock, and, soon, an all-new and even more content-packed tier of HBO called HBO Max.

HBO Max is just what the name implies — the “Max” reflects the fact that this new subscription offering is a super-stacked version that will give users tons more to watch beyond what you get with a standard HBO subscription. You’ll have HBO’s standard original programming with this tour, obviously, but also 10,000 hours of content at launch including extras from HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia like Friends (which the company stole away from Netflix) as well as TV classics like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Big Bang Theory, and South Park. This product will cost $15/month when it launches in May (we don’t have an exact date yet), which definitely puts it on the high side compared to the price of rivals like Netflix (the most popular tier of which costs $13/month) and Disney+ ($7/month). But there’s good news on that front — some of you will be getting this for the grand total of absolutely nothing.

Jeff Bezos thinks the US economy is still not ready to start reopening

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US economy needs to significantly scale up its ability to test a much bigger chunk of the American population in order to reopen and start getting back to normal in the wake of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
  • That’s according to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who made the point in his newly published and always widely-read annual letter to shareholders.
  • During the coronavirus crisis, Amazon has been relied on — but also tested — more than ever before as customer needs of household essentials, among other products, has skyrocketed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The chief executive of the sprawling Internet retailer that’s effectively propping up much of the US retail sector right now doesn’t think the country, which is still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus, is ready to reopen in a major way yet.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, in his newly published annual letter to shareholders, notes that regular testing “on a global scale, across all industries” is what would best help keep people safe going forward and go a long way towards getting the economy back up and running. For this to work, though, we need significantly more testing capacity than is available right now, he stresses.

NASA and other space agencies around the world are constantly on the lookout for potential threats that might appear out of the darkness of space. Objects like asteroid could cause devastation, especially if they’re large and hit us without warning. Thankfully, scientists are tracking thousands of them already, and find new ones all the time.

That being said, sometimes a space rock gets the jump on us, not appearing until it’s just days or even hours away from making a close pass of Earth. That was the case with 2020 GH2, an asteroid estimated to be as large as 100 feet across, which was initially discovered less than a week ago on April 11th but already made an incredibly close pass of our planet.

First Apple Store outside China to reopen this weekend after coronavirus closures

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The first Apple store outside China is set to reopen this weekend, following the iPhone maker’s sweeping move to temporarily shutter all of its stores outside China for an indefinite period as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
  • The first non-China store reopening is in South Korea, where Apple has a single store in the city of Seoul.
  • South Korea has done a better job than almost any other country in the world in terms of testing and mitigation efforts related to the virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s been almost a month now since Apple clarified that its closure of all stores outside of China as a result of the coronavirus pandemic would remain in place “until further notice,” but that won’t be the case for much longer — for one store, at least.

The iPhone maker’s first store outside China is set to reopen this weekend, on April 18, in South Korea, where Apple has a single store in the upscale Seoul district of Gangnam. Its reopening reflects the fact that South Korea has done a better job than almost any other country in fighting the coronavirus, in terms of both testing and containment efforts. And this report follows the news of a memo that Apple senior vice president of retail and people Deirdre O’Brien sent a few weeks ago, noting that stores in the US would remain closed until early May.
