Crucial coronavirus antibody drug could be ready sooner than expected
- South Korea plans to conduct clinical trials for a COVID-19 drug based on antibodies later this year, aiming to have the medicine ready next year.
- The country estimates that a vaccine won’t be ready until late 2021 at the earliest, or more likely sometime in 2022.
- Other countries have used plasma from survivors of the novel coronavirus disease to treat severe COVID-19 cases.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Doctors have been treating COVID-19 with a wide range of therapies, attempting to prevent complications and attend to symptoms. However, there are no specific drugs for the novel coronavirus and that explains why you keep hearing about cures that may work on some patients and fail on others. Medical professionals are running several studies to see which drugs have a chance of improving COVID-19 prognosis, but nothing can move too quickly in this regard. Vaccines will ultimately be the only way to prevent infection and hopefully eradicate the disease, but we’ll have to wait another 18 months to get them. Before that happens, South Korea might have a COVID-19 drug based on the only type of cure that works right now: Antibody treatment.

NASA wants to pay you $30,000 to design tiny payloads for the Moon
- NASA needs new designs for pint-sized rover payloads that it can send to the Moon.
- The space agency wants miniaturized hardware capable of scouring the lunar surface for resources including water, iron, and methane.
- The deadline to submit your concept is June 8th.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA is headed back to the Moon and it’s doing so sooner rather than later. The Artemis missions will eventually see astronauts return to the lunar surface — whether that will happen by 2024, as planned, is anybody’s guess — but tiny, high-tech machines will also be a big part of the agency’s push to explore Earth’s friendly neighbor.
Now, as NASA gears up and prepares for the missions that will support human exploration and discovery on the Moon, it’s asking for your help to design pint-sized science payloads that will make these new adventures a success.

Pregnant women might pass coronavirus to unborn babies
- A newborn in Peru tested positive for the novel coronavirus, prompting doctors to conclude COVID-19 was transmitted from his mother.
- Other studies have shown that vertical transmission might occur, although it’s unclear how or why it can happen.
- Transmission from mother to fetus hasn’t been widely observed, and only a few cases may have been registered so far.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus virus spreads primarily by contact with microscopic droplets containing the virus from an individual. Said droplets could be ejected via a cough or sneeze by the infected person, and a healthy person nearby could inhale them. The same droplets could land on various surfaces and objects or they might end up on someone else’s hands, and they could reach the eyes, nose, or mouth of the healthy person. But there may be another way COVID-19 spreads, and that’s from a mother to her unborn baby. The newest reported case comes from Peru, but studies have shown similar events in other countries.

PS5 price could be higher than expected, and there’s more bad news
- The PS5 price might be higher than what gamers have been expecting, and Sony will reportedly not have enough PlayStation 5 inventory on hand at launch so shortages may be widespread.
- The new PlayStation’s release date is still a secret, but Sony plans to launch the console this holiday season. A delay is still possible and Sony might postpone the PS5 if Microsoft does the same thing with the Xbox Series X.
- It’s unclear when Sony will reveal its new PS5 design, as the report says the only reason the DualSense controller was unveiled was to prevent leaks.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic may cause some severe disruptions when it comes to the launches of some of this year’s most hotly anticipated products. The list doesn’t include only Apple’s iPhone 12 series, but also the next-gen video game consoles expected to hit stores during the holiday season. Microsoft said recently that it had no reason to expect an Xbox Series X delay, but that could still happen. Things are in flux and the COVID-19 crisis might still hurt consoles this year.
Microsoft hasn’t revealed an actual launch date or pricing information for the new Xbox Series X, and we have no idea when these critical announcements will come. Sony has announced even fewer things about its new console than Microsoft. The PS5 design hasn’t been revealed and the company might not even be able to hold a press event for the console, a new report says. The new PlayStation is still supposed to be released this year, but it could be more expensive than initially believed. On top of that, initial stock might be much lower than expected and shortages could hamper the device’s release.

CDC director says another coronavirus wave is coming
- US officials are starting to warn people to expect a second novel coronavirus outbreak sometime next year, assuming that it has a seasonal pattern comparable to something like the flu.
- That’s according to CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield, who talked about that likelihood and how the US is preparing for it in an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As if the current coronavirus pandemic wasn’t enough to feel stressed out about, officials are now laying out a forecast that involves — once we actually get through the current crisis — the likelihood that there will be another wave of the virus next year.
That’s according to CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield, who said during an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America that we should prepare for the COVID-19 coronavirus to behave like the flu in terms of reoccurrences. “I think we have to assume this is like other respiratory viruses, and there will be a seasonality to it,” he said, adding that this means it’s important for the country to aggressively improve its testing capacity and other control strategies like contract tracing now. That will put us in a better position to respond when the next wave comes, a wave that hopefully doesn’t have nearly the same widespread effect across the country as this first one has had.

Amazon is blowing out Nest thermostats at the lowest prices of the year
- Smart thermostats like the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat are widely accepted as no-brainer purchases since they pay for themselves by significantly reducing your energy bill each month.
- With that in mind, a Nest thermostat is a great value even at full retail since you’ll end up saving money in the long run.
- Of course, taking advantage of a good deal means your smart thermostat will pay for itself even faster.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
We’ve told our readers this countless times in the past, but there’s no way to overemphasize this point: you need a smart thermostat. Not “you should get” a smart thermostat or “you might want to consider” a smart thermostat… you need one, and it’s just plain crazy not to have one. Forget all the convenient smart features and the nifty design, the bottom line is that smart thermostats save you money by cutting down your energy bills using smart scheduling and other intelligent features. Everyone wants to save money, and you can get started with two great deals on Amazon today that slash Nest thermostats to their best prices of 2020.
Starting with the more affordable model, the Nest Thermostat E is probably the single best smart thermostat model out there. It packs all the same features as the pricier smart thermostat from Nest, but it doesn’t have a stainless steel case or an OLED display. Those are both nifty features, but they’re also purely aesthetic. The Nest Thermostat E still has a beautiful design with a frosted glass display, and it pays for itself in a matter of months thanks to all the money you’ll save on your energy bills.
Nest AMZE2NESTHERMOSTE Thermostat, White: $147.99 ($74.00 / in)
Just look at all the great 5-star reviews on Amazon. “I installed myself in about 15 minutes and I am not a handyman. The app is easy to use and set schedules. I saved over $30 on our utility bill the first month we had it,” one reviewer said. “This is the third one that I have owned. I would not live without it. They are absolutely great, fast service if you need to talk to a trouble technician oh, they do what they are supposed to do,” boasted another. Everyone loves this awesome model, and it’s on sale right now at its lowest price in months on Amazon.
Of course, the Nest Learning Thermostat is a bit more expensive than the entry-level Nest model, but it still pays for itself in savings. It might just take a little longer to pay for itself, is all. If you pick one up now on Amazon, however, it’ll take much less time than it normally does because it’s currently discounted in all four available colors. And lucky for you, the most popular color option — silver stainless steel — is also the one with the biggest discount!
Google, T3007ES, Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, Smart Thermostat, Stainless Steel, Works Wi…: Price too low to display
You really can’t go wrong with either model. You’ll save money which is great for your wallet, and you’ll conserve energy which is great for the environment. Plus, on top of all the smart scheduling features, you can also use the Nest app on your phone to control your smart thermostats or even control them with Alexa voice commands.

Crazy new glasses might be able to spot people with coronavirus
- Chinese startup Rokid developed thermal glasses that can be used in screening campaigns for the novel coronavirus.
- The glasses could be used in public places and businesses once lockdown restrictions are loosened to find people who may have a fever, in an attempt to catch COVID-19 patients as early as possible.
- Rokid glasses have been used in China, and the company is discussing partnerships with US hospitals and local municipalities.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There’s no way to easily detect coronavirus infections right now, and there’s no specialized treatment that can help the body get rid of the virus or prevent infection altogether. That’s what makes it so dangerous and why social distancing is key right now. Eventually the world will start opening up again, but COVID-19 will not be defeated for at least few years. We will absolutely continue to experience localized outbreaks in the future. When that happens, we’ll hopefully be more prepared to deal with the new cases and contain the spread. Measures to reduce the risk of transmission could include prolonged COVID-19 screening campaigns designed to catch patients early on. Coronavirus testing for antibodies could map the immunity of a community following a bout of COVID-19. Contact-tracing with the help of smartphones could be a way to determine whether we’ve been exposed to infectious people.
Something as simple as wearing masks at all times could help reduce your risk, and public places may employ more advanced methods of screening for patients who have a fever. That’s a common COVID-19 symptom, but one that doesn’t appear in all patients. Even so, performing regular temperature checks might be recommended, and companies are figuring out tech tools that can improve the process and ensure the safety of the person checking the temperature of others. That’s where Rokid glasses could help.

Roku Express HD is $29 at Amazon, and the $60 Roku Streaming Stick+ is under $49
- Roku is the top streaming media player brand in the world right now, which means its devices are even more popular than Amazon’s Fire TV device lineup.
- Amazon is running deals right now on two of the company’s most popular streaming players, the entry-level Roku Express HD and the beloved Roku Streaming Stick+.
- Both devices are available today at surprisingly affordable prices, but there’s no telling how much longer the deals will be available.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When it comes to streaming media players, people are either in the Fire TV camp or the Roku camp. There happen to be a lot more people in the Roku camp since it’s the top streaming media player brand out there right now, but either one will give you access to any and all the streaming services you subscribe to. Fire TV fans will be happy to learn that there’s a little-known deal right now on Amazon’s site that you can take advantage of to get a great price on either one of Amazon’s two best-selling models. Buy either two Fire TV Sticks or two Fire TV Stick 4K streamers and you’ll get a $20 Amazon credit when you activate them.
If you’re team Roku, don’t worry because we’ve got a pair of deals for you that might be even better. One is on Roku’s entry-level streaming device and the second is on the Roku Streaming Stick+, which might be the most beloved device Roku makes.
Starting with the entry-level model, the Roku Express HD was updated for 2019 and it’s one of the most affordable streaming media players out there. You get access to every streaming service you have ever heard of along with dozens and dozens of services you’ve probably never heard of. On top of that, you get The Roku Channel, which aggregates all sorts of great movies and TV shows that you can stream for free. It’s shipping out next week and it’s only $29 at Amazon.
Roku Express HD Streaming Media Player 2019: $29.00
There are three things you won’t get with the Express HD that might make it worth the upgrade. First, you won’t get a compact dongle form factor — it’s still compact, but it’s not a dongle. Second, you won’t get support for content that streams in 4K resolution. And third, you won’t get support for the vivid colors that come along with HDR content. For all that, you’ll need the Roku Streaming Stick+, which just so happens to be on sale today for under $49 instead of $60. That price matches Amazon’s sale from this past Black Friday, so it’s definitely a great deal. On top of that, it ships out even sooner than the Express HD model.

A bizarre new coronavirus symptom has been discovered
- Doctors in Europe have found small lesions on the feet of coronavirus patients, possibly indicating a new symptom.
- The lesions can be present even in coronavirus patients without any other symptoms.
- The lesions heal on their own, and their cause is unknown, but this discovery could help doctors detect new COVID-19 cases.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Since the very earliest days of the novel coronavirus pandemic doctors have been searching for a way to differentiate a case of COVID-19 from other, similar respiratory illnesses. Coronavirus patients cough, have fevers, and experience fatigue, but the same is true for those with the seasonal flu, common cold, and even severe allergies. Finding unique symptoms has proven difficult.
Testing is obviously the best way to determine who does or doesn’t have a coronavirus infection, but health experts in Spain think they may have stumbled upon another early warning sign, and it’s one that isn’t typical of other respiratory ailments. The researchers have found that some COVID-19 patients have small lesions on their feet that are easily visible.

Black Friday is back for Ring Video Doorbells at Amazon
- Amazon recently announced the new Ring Video Doorbell 3, which packs some new features and is available to purchase right now on the retailer’s site.
- What many people might not realize, however, is that it’s not a very substantial upgrade compared to the Ring Video Doorbell 2 that’s currently on sale at Amazon with a huge discount.
- For those looking for the best of the best, the higher-end Ring Video Doorbell Pro is also on sale right now at Amazon with a discount that’s almost as deep.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Amazon recently took the wraps off the newest addition to its ever-expanding lineup of Ring doorbells, alarms, and other smart home security devices. The Ring Video Doorbell 3 is indeed a decent upgrade, but there are really only a few new features that are worthwhile. A 4-second pre-roll feature is a bit better at catching motion earlier so you can see the person or animal that triggered the recording sooner. There are also even more configurable motion zone settings, so you have better control over what triggers a recording and an alert.
Those features are great, and there are a few other minor improvements as well. If you’re a tech-lover who always needs the latest and greatest great, then you can order a Ring Video Doorbell 3 right now for just $200 from Amazon. If you’re willing to forgo the minor upgrades, however, you’ll find two terrific deals on different Ring doorbell models that offer much better value.
First and foremost, the best-selling Ring Video Doorbell 2 is currently available for just $139. That’s a mere $10 more than the all-time low price we saw last year during Amazon’s big Black Friday and Cyber Week blowout sales, and it’s the lowest price of 2020 so far by a sizeable margin. Again, you really don’t lose anything important by opting for the Ring Video Doorbell 2 instead of the newer Ring Video Doorbell 3 model, so saving $60 certainly seems like a good idea for most people.
Ring Video Doorbell 2 with HD Video, Motion Activated Alerts, Easy Installation: $139.00
If you want to upgrade to the Pro model so you can get all the higher-end features it touts, you’ll be happy to learn that Amazon’s current discount on the Ring Video Doorbell Pro is almost as deep as the one on the Ring Video Doorbell 2. Head over to Amazon now before this deal is done and you can pick one up for just $199. What’s more, you’ll get a free Echo Dot with your purchase! That’s a $250 Ring Video Doorbell Pro plus a $50 Echo Dot for a total value of $300, so you really can’t go wrong.
