New Nintendo Switch might have two displays

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Nintendo might be working on a dual-screen Switch 2 console, according to code found in the latest firmware update.
  • Firmware 10.0.0 contains profiles for a new hardware model that would feature a second display of sorts.
  • It’s unclear how a dual-display Switch would work, and there’s no evidence to suggest that Nintendo is planning an upgrade anytime soon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Microsoft and Sony are supposed to launch brand new consoles this year, assuming the novel coronavirus pandemic doesn’t delay the Xbox Series X and PS5. But there’s no indication that Nintendo is looking to launch a more powerful Switch successor to take on the two new devices. The Japanese gaming giant released a mild Switch refresh last year alongside a handheld-only version of the Switch and shot down all reports that said a more meaningful upgrade was in the works. After all, the Switch has been selling out recently, as the health crises impacted Nintendo’s supply chain. Nintendo’s extensive collection of games that aren’t available anywhere else is what makes the Switch so appealing, even though its hardware is hardly a match for the PS4 or Xbox One.

A new discovery in the latest Switch software update indicates that a Switch 2 might indeed be in the works, and the new console might have two displays.

New iPhone SE might be Google’s worst nightmare

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The 2020 iPhone SE comes with the same powerful chip as the iPhone 11, making the handset faster than most competitors, Pixel 4 included.
  • The Pixel 5 is rumored to feature a cheaper Snapdragon processor than the Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 phones.
  • In such a scenario, the iPhone SE would be speedier than Google’s new Pixel.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple launched the second-gen Pixel SE on Wednesday, putting an end to all the “iPhone 9” rumors. The phone is indeed exactly what we expected. It has the guts of an iPhone 11 packed inside of the chassis of the iPhone 8. It has the same camera as the iPhone XR, but it’s powered by Apple’s A13 chip that’s found inside the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. It comes with 3GB of RAM, according to early estimates, or as much RAM as the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and iPhone XS. And finally, it rocks the Touch ID fingerprint sensor you love. Like the iPhone 8 series, the new iPhone SE features a glass sandwich design, which means there’s a wireless charging coil inside the handset, but wired charging is as fast as iPhone 11 at 18W. Finally, the handset comes with IP67 water and dust certification. Starting at $399, this is the best affordable iPhone ever and a device that will simply destroy mid-range Android rivals. Just a few days ago, I told you how the $399 Pixel 4a will be no match for the iPhone SE. At the time, the iPhone SE specs above were only rumors. But now that Apple confirmed everything, the iPhone SE shapes up to be not just a better alternative than the Pixel 4a, but also a phone that could turn out to be the Pixel 5’s worst nightmare.

That ‘alien probe’ asteroid might be a chunk of an alien planet

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Oumuamua, the first interstellar object spotted by mankind, might be a fragment of a planet that was torn apart by its star.
  • Researchers ran simulations to try to explain the object’s bizarre, cigar-like shape.
  • First spotted in late 2017, Oumuamua is speeding out of our solar system as we speak.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s hard to believe it was way back in 2017 that astronomers spotted the very first interstellar object in our solar system. The object — a long, cigar-shaped mass known as Oumuamua — sped into our system so fast that scientists barely had a chance to spot and study it. By the time they could focus their attention (and high-tech hardware) on it, it was already leaving. Nevertheless, a great deal of data was gathered, and researchers have been working hard to explain the object’s origins ever since.

Scientists argued over whether it was an asteroid, comet, or perhaps even an object created by aliens. All possible options were seemingly already on the table, but a research paper published in Nature Astronomy offers a new and incredibly interesting theory to explain Oumuamua.

Here’s the federal government’s plan for reopening the country, starting in May

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • When will the coronavirus quarantines end? That’s the million-dollar question everyone is asking right now — and, it turns out, an answer is starting to come into view.
  • President Trump on Thursday is set to lay out a kind of blueprint for reopening the country, which would happen in stages and also be determined to a large degree by the severity of the coronavirus outbreaks in the individual states — with the recovery proceeding under locally set guidelines, inspired by the federal government.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The end of the status quo when it comes to the coronavirus-related quarantines that have been in place for weeks around the country is starting to come into view.

The federal government has worked up a multi-stage plan to support the reopening of the country and the economy, which would unfold in three stages as outlined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to The Washington Post, phase one will run through May 1 and broadly consist of messaging around what comes next. Phase two would last until May 15 and entail mass production of protective equipment and test kits, since much more intense and targeted testing will be required once the country starts slowly getting back to normal. Speaking of which, that’s step three — back to business, as it were, but under locally-set guidelines.

Mark Ruffalo has a great idea for a new Hulk adventure

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo confirmed there have been talks with Marvel to appear in the upcoming She-Hulk TV series, but nothing is in the works.
  • Ruffalo said he’s willing to reprise the role that was a big part of his professional life over the past decade.
  • The actor even revealed the kind of Hulk storyline that would make sense in light of everything that has happened with the character so far.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It was nearly a year ago that Avengers: Endgame wrapped up a decade of Marvel movies, bringing to an end the arcs of several of the six original Avengers and advancing the storylines of everyone else who will continue to appear in the MCU in Phase 4. Of the six original Avengers, two are dead (Black Widow and Iron Man), and Captain America is retired. Fat Thor left the planet with the Guardians, while Hawkeye got his family back.

The least satisfying arc is Hulk’s, although Endgame did deliver plenty of exciting developments for him. Bruce Banner and Hulk found a way to coexist, but it happened off-camera. Professor Hulk is now a beloved superhero, not a green monster that the world hates, and he was the one to bring everyone back to life. He was probably the only character other than Thanos that could survive the massive energy discharge of the Infinity Gauntlet. But it’s not just Professor Hulk’s transformation that happened off-camera. We never got to find out why he and Natasha decided not to pursue a relationship that seemed to be a guarantee only a few years ago. Also, the new Hulk was hardly given any fight scenes of note, and we never got to see a Hulk vs. Thanos rematch.

Mark Ruffalo, the actor who played the hero after Edward Norton walked away from the role, doesn’t seem to be done Hulking out just yet. After reports said he might return in Phase 4, the actor revealed that nothing is decided just yet. But there may be more to Hulk’s story, and Ruffalo has some ideas.

Millions are subscribing to Netflix during the coronavirus pandemic

  • As the coronavirus pandemic has dragged on, one of everybody’s go-to entertainment options, while we’re all quarantined at home, is a Netflix binge session.
  • Accordingly, analysts are expecting a big increase in the streamer’s subscriber base when Netflix reports its latest quarterly earnings next week.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Here’s a development everyone should have been able to see coming from a mile away. The coronavirus pandemic that’s resulted in widespread quarantines and stay-at-home orders around the world means that several million new people have since decided they can’t live without the service that gave the world such hot TV properties during the quarter as Tiger King and the third season of Ozark.

That’s according to new analyst estimates about Netflix’s subscriber base during the same quarter that saw the onset of the COVID-19 crisis which has brought daily life in the US and most of the rest of the world pretty much grinding to a halt. One of the tried-and-true entertainment pursuits you can enjoy while hunkering down at home, though, is a Netflix binge — with this fact leading analysts to expect a huge quarterly performance when the streamer provides its latest earnings update next week.

NASA staff are sending rover commands to Mars from their homes

  • NASA’s Curiosity rover team is working from home, but still controls the robot’s movements on the Red Planet.
  • Using video conferencing to coordinate, the team plots and plans commands before sending them into space from the comfort of home.
  • The rover is still being as productive as ever, NASA says, and recently drilled for a rock sample using a command sent by NASA employees working remotely.

When NASA announced that it was forcing as many of its employees as possible to work from home amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the agency also mentioned that staff deemed critical to missions would still be allowed access to NASA’s centers and labs.

Controlling the Curiosity rover on Mars is obviously a critical task, so you might be surprised to learn that the Curiosity mission team isn’t actually coming into work these days. Incredibly, the team is doing all of its rover-related work from the comfort of their own homes, controlling the rover remotely without ever leaving the house.

‘The Mandalorian’ returns in a new documentary series on Disney+

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Mandalorian wrapped up its first season on Disney+ on December 27th, 2019.
  • A new, eight-episode documentary series about the making of the show called Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ on May 4th, 2020 aka Star Wars Day.
  • The show will feature never-before-seen footage, interviews, and roundtable discussions.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

While services like Apple TV+ and Quibi are banking on new, original content driving subscriptions, Disney was able to enter the streaming wars with an immeasurable head start, thanks to decades worth of TV shows and movies that it could make available to Disney+ subscribers on day one. Therefore, narrative-driven original series have not as big of a priority for the service, at least not yet, which is why many subscribers have been logging in far less frequently ever since The Mandalorian wrapped up its first season late last year. If you’re not looking to rewatch The Avengers or A Goofy Movie or Ducktales, there haven’t been many reasons to log back in.

That’s finally going to change on May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day, as Disney announced this week that it will take fans behind the scenes of the live-action Star Wars show in an eight-episode documentary series called Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau will host the series, speaking to the cast and crew of The Mandalorian about how the show was made, with each episode focusing on a different facet of the show.

Instagram is helping restaurants deliver food and sell gift cards

  • Scrolling through one’s Instagram feed is one way to find some distraction from the depressing coronavirus-related news headlines, but now the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app has added a way users can also support small businesses that are struggling right now while they scroll.
  • Businesses can now add stickers and buttons to their accounts that allow users to easily tap to order gift cards, as well as food delivery.
  • These kinds of features are important, because a new report finds that more than 7 million small businesses are at risk of closing because of economic hardship stemming from the coronavirus crisis.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought about some surprising new feature development at Instagram, the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app where the equivalent of a retweet still requires some trickery to pull off — but where ordering food delivery from inside the app is now as easy as making a single tap on your screen.

Instagram on Wednesday announced a handful of updates to the service that are meant to help struggling small businesses amid the coronavirus crisis, one of which includes stickers that can be tapped to take people to a business’ website where users can order food delivery and buy gift cards. “Small businesses are an important part of our community, and many are facing immense challenges during the COVID‑19 crisis,” Instagram announced. “Today, we’re making it easier to discover gift cards, online food orders, and fundraisers on Instagram so you can support the businesses you love.”

Disturbing study says coronavirus might survive exposure to high temperatures

  • New coronavirus research shows that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can survive after exposure to high temperatures.
  • The findings could be used to set up new protocols for labs that perform COVID-19 tests or study the virus.
  • The revelation might have practical implications for how people should deal with objects that could be contaminated.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The arrival of summer will miraculously kill the novel coronavirus. At least, that’s what President Trump claimed a few times before ultimately declaring a national emergency. That was contrary to direct evidence that countries experiencing much warmer weather when the virus left China were not spared.

The coronavirus has spread to Africa, South America, and Mexico over the past few weeks. In the US, California and Florida have some 50,000 confirmed cases between them as of Wednesday morning, proving that summer weather isn’t enough to neutralize the virus and reduce transmission. Not only that, but the virus might be able to survive exposure to high temperatures for a more extended period than initially anticipated.
