  • An Indiana man’s bank account showed a balance of $8.2 million after his government stimulus payment was deposited.
  • The man, Charles Calvin, had to wait until Monday to contact his bank, which now says the money was never in his account to begin with.
  • Calvin has two ATM receipts that show the massive balance, but now it’s nowhere to be found.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Right now, millions and millions of Americans are eagerly awaiting deposits from the federal government as part of a massive stimulus effort in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Volunteer firefighter Charles Calvin of Indiana was one such individual, but when he took a quick trip to the ATM to withdraw some cash he saw an available balance that made his jaw drop.

As CNN/WGN reports, Calvin’s ATM receipt showed that he had received a sum far greater than the $1,700 he was expecting. Instead, the ATM showed that his account had a whopping $8.2 million sitting in it.

  • Apple Watch owners now have a new app that lets them keep in touch with their closest contacts via Facebook Messenger.
  • It’s a new app called Kit, from an internal R&D team at Facebook. This is separate from Facebook’s Messenger app for Apple Watch and is meant to be a more dedicated space for users’ favorite contacts.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you’re one of those people who fit neatly in the Venn Diagram intersect that includes Apple Watch owners as well as Facebook loyalists, the social networking giant has released a new messaging app today just for you.

More specifically, it’s an R&D unit within Facebook (the company’s NPE Team) that’s released the experimental app, which is called Kit and stands for “Keep in Touch.” The idea here is to provide more Watch-specific functionality for users of Facebook’s Messenger service while using the app’s features — many of which can be activated with a single tap — to stay in touch with close friends. We should note that this is the NPE Team’s first app to launch on Apple Watch, and it’s free to download.

Movie theaters are planning to start opening back up by late July

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Movie theaters like AMC have been closed for almost a month due to the coronavirus.
  • Movie theaters may re-open at the end of July in a best-case scenario. In turn, many summer blockbusters may see their release delayed by a few months.
  • It may be challenging for theater chains to attract viewers as the prospect of sitting in close proximity with dozens of strangers may not be appealing.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the entire movie industry has come to a standstill. Movie productions are on hold for the foreseeable future and movie theaters themselves have been closed for about a month now. When AMC Theaters — which is the largest theater chain in the country — closed all of their theaters on March 17, the company said that they might re-open in about 12 weeks. A few weeks later, it now appears that that timeline was a tad too optimistic.

While the initial timeline might have seen AMC re-open their theaters in mid-June, the coronavirus has become more entrenched in large U.S. cities than many anticipated. Indeed, the United States has now seen more coronavirus deaths than any other country in the world. And though the coronavirus is seemingly peaking in major U.S. cities, stay-at-home directives may extend well into May and June.

If coronavirus delays the NFL, a third of cable subscribers say they’ll cancel

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • ESPN’s ratings are down in a major way right now, thanks to the fact that the coronavirus pandemic means no professional sports games are being played right now.
  • A new survey reveals another coronavirus impact on the economy — many cable subscribers say live sports is the major reason they have a cable package in the first place, and if the NFL season gets delayed because of the virus, they’ll cut the cord.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Thanks to the mitigation practices required to combat the coronavirus outbreak like social distancing and the stay-at-home-orders that have much of the country not going out in public right now, one of the many industries getting hit especially hard is professional sports.

The professional basketball, hockey, and baseball seasons all got iced because of the virus, as did the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, and there are other spillover effects that can be seen from this — including the fact that ESPN’s ratings are down some 50% compared to this point in 2019. There are no new games to watch! But that also begs another question: What’s going to happen if or when the NFL gets postponed because of the virus? Because even with the country talking about tentatively reopening certain things in another month or so, we’re still not going to have a COVID-19 vaccine until next year — which means that big, public gatherings where tens of thousands of people are crowded together won’t be happening anytime soon.

Google said to be readying a custom chip for Pixels and Chromebooks

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Pixel 5 is rumored to have a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon processor rather than the chip that powers the Galaxy S20.
  • Google is reportedly looking into a radical silicon change for next year’s Pixel 6.
  • Following in Apple’s footsteps, Google will create its own mobile chips in partnership with Samsung.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Ever since Google pivoted from the Nexus to the Pixel, it felt like Google has been one step behind Apple. The Pixels were inspired by the iPhone and closely followed Apple’s design and feature sets. The first Pixel looked too much like an iPhone 6. Google then copied everything else that Apple did.

It killed the headphone jack a year after Apple did, and introduced 3D face recognition support two years after Apple. Wireless charging came to the Pixel 3 a year after Apple finally embraced wireless charging (though a few older Nexus phones did support wireless charging). As for the all-screen smartphone design, Google followed Apple as well, and that’s when it changed the Android navigation menu, which now looks a lot like the iPhone’s. Google also took its time moving to dual-lens cameras on its phones several years after Apple, although the Pixel camera is one department where Google’s phones shine. But even then, the Pixel 4’s rear camera design looked just like the rumored iPhone 11 camera design. And that iPhone rumor turned out to be true.

Google is now said to be doing something totally different with the Pixel 5 than what you’d expect from the company, and it’s certainly not something that Apple has ever done. The new phone is rumored to have a mid-range Qualcomm processor rather than the chip that powers most other flagships.

This brings us, however, to the most exciting Pixel rumor to date. Google is finally getting the only iPhone feature Google should have ever copied: A custom chip.

Your coronavirus stimulus check could be swiped by debt collectors

  • Coronavirus stimulus checks are now being deposited in bank accounts across America.
  • Millions of Americans will receive these payments, but there are exceptions to this rule, including private debt collection, which allows creditors to take the checks for themselves.
  • The US Treasury Department has the authority to exempt the payments, but has yet to do so.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the key elements of the US government’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is the distribution of a $1,200 payment directly to the bank accounts of millions of Americans. If you paid your taxes this year or last, you are likely eligible, though there are exceptions to this rule, most of which we covered in a separate article. But it turns out we missed one important exception — people who have outstanding debt.

The American Prospect reports that Congress did not exempt the $1,200 coronavirus stimulus payments from private debt collection. The Treasury Department has the authority to exempt these payments, ensuring that everyone who is eligible for the $1,200 receives it, but has yet to do so, giving creditors the ability to snatch it away.

iPhone owners are much more likely to be targeted by phishing scams

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Web phishing attacks are on the rise, and thanks to brand loyalty and especially iPhone fans, attempts to scam Apple consumers are among the most common brand-related phishing attempts.
  • That’s according to a new report from Check Point Research, which finds that Apple was the brand most often the subject of web phishing attempts during the first quarter of this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Just because the coronavirus pandemic exploded around the world during the first quarter, that doesn’t mean everything else stopped in its tracks, though you’d certainly be forgiven for thinking that based on the unrelenting amount of news coverage dedicated to the virus. There are still major developments happening related to the 2020 contest for the White House, for example, like President Obama endorsing Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination Tuesday — and online scammers are still on the prowl looking for victims, as a new report about phishing activity during the quarter reveals.

Check Point Research’s Brand Phishing Report for the quarter finds that Apple was the brand that phishing scammers most often pretended to represent to try and fool consumers, up from seventh place back in the fourth quarter. According to the firm, “this was due in part to the anticipated launch of the new Apple Watch, with criminals exploiting the online buzz to launch several credential theft attempts.”

Rare sale slashes $50 Philips Hue color LED smart bulbs to $42

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Once upon a time not very long ago, Philips Hue LED smart light bulbs used to go on sale all the time at deep discounts. In fact, there would be different Philips Hue deals available each week, and then nearly every popular bulb in the company’s lineup would be discounted during big sales events. More recently, however, things have changed. Incredibly, almost no Philips Hue deals were available at all during the Black Friday and Cyber Week sales ahead of the holidays last year.

Opportunities to save on Philips Hue bulbs are definitely quite rare right now, but they do exist and you have to make sure you take advantage when the chance to save some cash does arise. One such opportunity is available right now on Amazon, where you’ll find a few great deals on some of Philips Hue’s most popular smart lights.

The Philips Hue A19 Multicolor LED Smart Light Bulb is the single most popular bulb the company makes, and it’s quite pricey at $50 a pop. Right now on Amazon, however, you can buy individual bulbs for $42 each. That’s a great price that matches Amazon’s lowest price so far for individual color bulbs. On top of that, you can pick up Philips Hue White Ambiance LED smart bulbs for $19 each instead of $25.

In addition to the two deals above that are both great for people who already have Philips Hue setups in their homes, there are two other deals that are perfect for people who are just beginning to build out a Philips Hue setup. The Philips Hue 2-Pack Premium Multicolor Smart Light Starter Kit that includes two color bulbs and a Hue Hub is on sale for $127 instead of $150, and the Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit with four white bulbs and a hub gets a, even bigger discount from $150 to $119.

Forget the Galaxy S20: The $699 OnePlus 8 5G is too good to pass up

  • The newly launched OnePlus 8 phones have the same high-end specs as the Galaxy S20, complete with 5G support, but they’re a lot more affordable.
  • The OnePlus 8 starts at $699, which is what the cheapest iPhone 11 model costs and is $300 less expensive than the entry-level Galaxy S20.
  • The OnePlus 8 Pro is also significantly cheaper than the Galaxy S20 Ultra, although the latter does have one huge camera advantage.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the Galaxy S20 series launched a couple of months ago, Samsung confirmed the phones would be just as expensive as last-minute leaks had suggested. The Galaxy S20 starts at $999, which is $300 more than the cheapest iPhone 11. More than a month later, Samsung started cutting the price of the handset, and last week it launched a great Galaxy S20 promo. Samsung guarantees it’ll give you 50% of your money back if you trade-in the phone in the coming years. But you still have to pay the full price for the handset.

If you still haven’t purchased the Galaxy S20, you shouldn’t until you’ve checked out the OnePlus 8 series, which launched on Tuesday. The brand new flagship phones have specs that match the Galaxy S20, and prices start at $699 for the cheapest OnePlus 8 phone, which also happens to support 5G.
