This is one Apple Maps feature that Google Maps has to copy
- Apple Maps will soon start showing testing locations for the novel coronavirus.
- Apple has an online portal where healthcare providers and other businesses can register their COVID-19 testing locations.
- Google Maps has plenty of coronavirus-related features but doesn’t list COVID-19 testing sites in the app.

Apple has been upgrading its Apple Maps navigation apps in the past few years to try to catch up with Google’s Maps product. The latter isn’t the default mapping and navigation app on iOS, but plenty of iPhone users still use it. Google Maps offers a more feature-rich experience than Apple Maps, and that’s understandable given Google’s development lead on Apple. But Apple Maps is about to get a feature that Google Maps should copy as soon as possible as it’s related to the novel coronavirus health crisis. Apple Maps will soon direct you to the closes COVID-19 testing center near you, which is the kind of information you should find in a navigation app during a pandemic.

The novel coronavirus pandemic may have thrown a wrench in Apple’s product launch plans this year, but the company is still going to refresh plenty of products, both on the software and hardware side of things. Apple already updated the MacBook Air and iPad Pro, and it’s expected to unveil the iPhone SE later this week. WWDC 2020 will be the first developers’ conference not to offer an in-person experience, but the event will move online to unveil the latest software innovations from Cupertino. The iPhone 12 series is still expected to be unveiled in September, even though some models might not ship during the same month. Until we get there, we’ll have plenty of Apple rumors to go through, and the latest one reveals details about the iPhone 12 design.

Coronavirus update: Even Dr. Fauci now thinks parts of the US can start reopening in May
- The number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations is apparently reaching enough of a turning point in the US that officials beyond just President Trump are now hopeful that the process of reopening the country could get started sometime in May.
- Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House coronavirus response task force, signaled this weekend that it’s probably time to start getting parts of the country reopened sometime in May, a stance in line with President Trump’s.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If you’ve been among the many Americans trying in vain to get an answer to the question of when the country might be able to start opening back up again, some semblance of a timeframe is starting to emerge that may satisfy you, at last. During an Easter Sunday news show interview, one of the country’s top experts on infectious diseases feels confident enough in pointing to May as the month when, finally, restrictions on business closures and social-distancing guidelines may finally start to be loosened. But only in parts of the country, which is the massive caveat to be aware of.

NASA is ready to send a helicopter to Mars
- NASA’s Mars Helicopter — part of the Mars 2020 mission — was just installed on the Perseverance rover as the team prepares for the launch of the mission in July.
- The helicopter won’t have any scientific objectives but will demonstrate what may be possible when it comes to flying on Mars.
- Weighing just four pounds, the helicopter will initially be powered by the Perseverance rover but will gather solar energy after it is deployed, remaining up and running for up to a month.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA’s Perseverance rover and Mars 2020 mission are rapidly taking shape as we speed toward the expected launch window which begins in mid-July. The robot is the most advanced piece of technology NASA has ever sent to the Red Planet, and it’s packed with instruments that will teach scientists all kinds of interesting things about our dusty neighbor.
Now, with around 14 weeks until the beginning of the launch window, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has reached a critical step in the final assembly of the rover by installing the Mars Helicopter. Yes, you read that correctly.

A coronavirus ‘immunity passport’ could work, or it could fail spectacularly
- Detecting the novel coronavirus infection isn’t the only thing healthcare professionals are interested in. It’s as important to test COVID-19 immunity to determine the actual number of people who have had the disease in a community.
- Immunity testing could open the door to so-called “immunity passports” that demonstrate the bearer has survived the infection.
- However, it’s not known how long COVID-19 immunity lasts, and additional measures will have to be put in place to reduce the risk of reinfection and contain new outbreaks.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The only way to defeat the novel coronavirus for good is to gain long-lasting immunity to the disease. One way to do it is to survive COVID-19. Your body has the weapons to fight off the infection, and in most cases, it’ll prevail against the disease. The other way to develop immunity is to get a vaccine that can boost the immune system’s defenses. The more people build resistance, the harder it is for the virus to spread and the safer it is for the world to get back to normal, or at least close to it. It might not be the life we had before, but social distancing measures will be eased so that more people can go back to work in the coming months. Lifting lockdowns should only be done at the advice of healthcare professionals who know what they’re doing when it comes to dealing with a pandemic. And that’s where immunity testing might play a role in the months ahead.
You may have heard of a so-called “immunity passport,” which would be a certification that a person is immune to COVID-19. Some countries, including Germany, Italy, UK, and the US, are already considering it, and there could be several advantages for such a policy. But it could also backfire spectacularly if it’s not done right.

- If you’re looking for something to watch with your kids, Despicable Me is joining the Netflix library.
- Miss The Office and Parks and Recreation? Well, #blackAF features Rashida Jones in a starring role, so you can get your fill of Karen Filippelli / Ann Perkins.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
We have an eclectic selection of shows, movies, documentaries, and specials coming to the Netflix streaming service this week. There is no real obvious headliner, but fans of comedian Chris D’Elia will be pleased to see his brand new special, No Pain, on Tuesday. Also, if you haven’t seen Hail, Caesar!, it’s an underrated entry in the Coen brothers canon, and certainly worth adding to your queue. I’ll also be checking out #blackAF, because Rashida Jones very rarely shows up in bad projects, and a new comedy would be welcome in my life right about now.

This UK photographer uses FaceTime to keep taking portraits while everyone is quarantined
- One UK wedding and portrait photographer has found a way to keep his business going during the coronavirus pandemic and still take peoples’ photos in spite of widespread quarantines.
- His solution: FaceTime, which allows him to direct subjects from afar, take a screen capture, and then using his tools to edit the result.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
UK-based wedding and portrait photographer Tim Dunk didn’t know what he would do at first, when the coronavirus outbreak exploded across Europe and necessitated widespread business closures and quarantine orders. How do you keep taking peoples’ photos when you’re not, ah, allowed to be anywhere near them?
Instead of panicking, though, he began toying with an idea. Maybe there was a way to keep going after all — a creative solution that would let him ride out the pandemic until things get back to normal. Turns out, the answer was right in front of him, via his iPhone: FaceTime. “I started to think around ways I could effectively make portraits of my friends, and keep my brain stimulated,” Dunk (@tim_dunk, on Instagram) told BGR. “I put a shout out to some friends to see if anyone was up for trying to use the fairly basic imaging capabilities of FaceTime, initially just as a fun experiment, and a way of collaborating with my creative mates around the world.”

Modern life has been forced to change in a big way since the novel coronavirus pandemic began jumping from nation to nation. Lots of us are staying home, only making trips when it’s absolutely necessary, and even then, making sure we’re spending as little time as possible away from home. The Earth, it seems, appreciates it.
NASA has been monitoring air quality around the world for many years now, but never before has the space agency noticed as dramatic a shift as it has since coronavirus lockdown measures were put into place. In a new blog post, NASA shows off some incredible satellite views of the East Coast of the United States, revealing the incredible improvement in air quality now that drivers aren’t doing nearly as much driving.
