A coronavirus vaccine could be ready this fall, according to British scientists

  • A team of British scientists thinks it can have a vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus ready by this fall — as soon as September, according to the team’s lead researcher.
  • This news comes as the global death toll from the coronavirus has passed 100,000, and Britain’s prime minister Boris Johnson who’s tested positive for the coronavirus was recently moved into intensive care.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The global toll from the COVID-19 coronavirus has reached another grim milestone, surpassing 100,000 deaths from the virus, while the world waits to see the first tangible results from teams spanning multiple countries that are racing to make a vaccine ready.

To that end, scientists in Britain provided new hope over the weekend that a finished product is coming soon, and perhaps much sooner than even the most optimistic experts predicted. Sarah Gilbert, a professor of vaccinology at Oxford University, told The Times of London that the team of scientists that she leads — one of dozens around the world trying to develop a vaccine — could have one ready as soon as September. And that, at least at this point, she’s “80% confident” that it will be a successful vaccine.

Early results from coronavirus drug are promising, but more rigorous testing needed

  • A potential coronavirus drug called Remdesivir showed encouraging results in a preliminary study.
  • Remdesivir is an existing drug from Gilead that was initially designed to help Ebola patients.
  • The number of coronavirus cases in the United States recently surpassed 500,000.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Despite some indications that the coronavirus may have peaked in some U.S. areas, the pandemic is still ravaging many areas across the country. Just this past week, for instance, New York City — which has been categorized as the epicenter of the virus in the United States — saw its highest single-day death toll from the coronavirus. All told, new data from the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resources Center indicates that the cumulative number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. now exceeds 500,000. Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. recently reached 20,000 and surpassed Italy in the process.

All the while, researchers are still working furiously to come up with coronavirus vaccines and drugs. One of the more promising treatments centers on Remdesivir, an existing drug from Gilead that was initially designed to treat Ebola patients.

First ‘Avengers 5’ details might’ve just leaked

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Disney has delayed the premiere of all its MCU Phase 4 films, and some of its Disney+ TV series may be delayed as well.
  • While there’s no Avengers movie in Phase 4, Marvel is already rumored to be working on a new “Avengers 5” crossover.
  • The studio is looking at pitches for Young Avengers, according to a new leak.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Avengers: Endgame was easily the most hotly anticipated film of the last decade and the movie more than delivered. Avengers 4 was a significant hit for Disney, one the company is likely looking to reproduce in the year to come. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is on a hiatus right now thanks to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak prompted Disney to postpone the launch of all its MCU Phase 4 movies, and possibly delay some of the MCU Phase 4 TV series it has planned for Disney+. Social distancing measures make it impossible for people to go see films in theaters, but they also interfere with shooting new content. The longer these delays, the more we’ll have to wait for the next Avengers film. And when it does arrive, it might not be the Avengers 5 movie we expect, according to a new leak.

Smoking weed puts you at greater risk during the coronavirus crisis

  • Weed consumption can be a risk factor for COVID-19, even if marijuana use is moderate and infrequent, doctors warn.
  • Marijuana, like tobacco, causes an inflammatory reaction in the lung even before the novel coronavirus can settle in and produce its own inflammatory response.
  • Users are advised not to smoke during the health crisis, and inform their doctors of their marijuana behavior if they have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you think smoking a joint here and there to alleviate stress and anxiety during these troubled times is a good idea, you might want to reconsider. Even casual marijuana consumption is a risk factor for COVID-19 patients, doctors warn. Research already shows that the novel coronavirus is worse for smokers, and weed might be just as dangerous. The problem with smoking any substances is that they can cause inflammation in the lungs before the arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that can result in the COVID-19 disease.

“What happens to your airways when you smoke cannabis is that it causes some degree of inflammation, very similar to bronchitis, very similar to the type of inflammation that cigarette smoking can cause,” chief medical officer for the American Lung Association Dr. Albert Rizzo told CNN. “Now you have some airway inflammation, and you get an infection on top of it. So, yes, your chance of getting more complications is there.”

IRS launches online tool to speed up your coronavirus stimulus check

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The IRS just launched an online tool that allows non-filers to submit their banking information to get a coronavirus stimulus check.
  • The stimulus payments already began to arrive this week via direct deposit for qualifying Americans whose banking data is already in IRS’s database.
  • Everyone else will receive the checks via regular mail, which will take longer to process.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Working for home during the novel coronavirus pandemic is a luxury that millions of Americans don’t have. Strict social distancing measures aren’t going to be lifted anytime soon, and life won’t just return to normal once this first COVID-19 wave is defeated. Millions of people will still be unemployed for some time to come. The government already passed a massive $2.2 trillion stimulus package meant to provide assistance during the health crisis to all Americans who qualify, regardless of employment status. The bill’s primary purpose is to provide money to tens of millions of people during this time, with the first stimulus checks having already been dispersed. The check size depends on income, starting at $1,200 for individuals who earned up to $75,000 in adjusted gross income. The higher your income, the lower the check amount will be, and you won’t qualify if your income exceeds $99,000 for individuals or about twice that for families.

The problem with the stimulus checks is that some of them might take weeks to arrive via regular mail if the government doesn’t already have your banking information on file. However, the IRS just launched an online service to speed up your coronavirus stimulus check.

Teenagers still like Apple over Samsung, and it’s not even close

  • 85% of teenagers have iPhones, according to a new survey.
  • 88% of teenagers want their next smartphone to be an iPhone.
  • Despite some impressive devices from Samsung, the company simply can’t compete with the iPhone when it comes to teenage interest.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

According to a new survey conducted by Piper Sandler Companies, teenagers still prefer Apple’s iPhone over Android devices like Samsung by a wide mile. The data is a bit surprising given that Samsung flagships, in particular, can more or less stand toe-to-toe with the iPhone these days. Still, Apple has long had a brand cache that other companies, no matter how hard they try or how much money they spend, can’t seem to match.

The survey in question fielded responses from 5,200 teens — with an average age of about 16 — across 41 states. When the dust settled, a whopping 85% of respondents indicated that they own an iPhone. That’s an absolutely staggering figure and underscores the strength of Apple’s brand amongst younger generations.

Doctors estimate 1.67 million people in France may be infected with coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Estimates from a doctors’ union in France say the country might have as many as 1.67 million COVID-19 patients, not including asymptomatic coronavirus carriers.
  • Sweden might have more than a million cases of COVID-19 cases as well, according to a mathematical model.
  • This data can’t be confirmed without proper coronavirus testing. But widespread COVID-19 screening campaigns aren’t possible in many countries right now.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Lack of proper testing for the coronavirus, as well as the particularities of COVID-19, make it impossible to tell how many people have the illness. Only patients who show symptoms can qualify for a test in countries that don’t have enough tests or the capacity to process them. Even countries that have conducted broader COVID-19 campaigns can’t be sure of how many infected people they may contain, especially with patients who experience no symptoms. About a month ago, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that up to 70% of the population could contract the virus, which translates to a mind-boggling 58 million people.

With that in mind, an estimate from a doctors’ union in France that predicts over 1.6 million French people may have COVID-19 shouldn’t surprise anyone. Estimates from Sweden, a country that’s doing its own thing to mitigate the health crisis, also say there may be up to one million cases in the region.
