‘Saturday Night Live’ returns this weekend with a remotely-produced show

  • Saturday Night Live is returning to the air this weekend with a new show, following the suspension of production on shows back in mid-March — when the worst of the coronavirus crisis was just starting to hit the US.
  • In accordance with the stay-at-home order in New York, which as a state has more coronavirus cases right now than any other country in the world, Saturday’s new SNL show will be produced by crew and cast members working remotely.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

After suspending production last month as the coronavirus crisis exploded into a full-blown catastrophe across the US, Saturday Night Live is ramping back up again and preparing to air a new show this weekend.

Of course, the “live” part of the name will take on a new meaning, since the show will be put together remotely, as the cast and crew remain quarantined at home in New York — which now has more coronavirus cases than any other country in the world. In terms of what we can expect for the first new SNL show since the pandemic forced it off the air, it will no doubt include familiar elements like the Weekend Update segment, but as of the time of this writing, NBC had not released details about a host or musical act.

The US won’t have to wait long for another total solar eclipse

  • The next total solar eclipse for those in the United States will come four years from now, in early April 2024.
  • Unlike the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017, the 2024 eclipse will come in spring, making viewing difficult for many northern states where cloud cover is likely.
  • The eclipse will pass over several US states as well as huge regions of Mexico and a small part of Canada as well.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It feels like a lifetime ago, but the total solar eclipse that captivated the United States happened just a few years ago on August 21st, 2017. It was an event that captured the imaginations of many across the country, prompting skywatchers to make trips to areas where they could best see the eclipse, and turning eclipse glasses into a hot commodity.

Eclipses happen on Earth with regularity, but since we can only be in one place at a time, we’re not likely to see many in our lifetimes. The total solar eclipse of 2017 was certainly spectacular, but North American doesn’t actually have to wait that long before it’ll be treated to yet another one. The next total solar eclipse to grace the continent will occur four years from now, on April 8th, 2024.

Coronavirus may not ruin your summer vacation, says Dr. Fauci

  • The novel coronavirus pandemic has thrown the entire planet out of wack, and many people are looking for any signs of regaining a sense of normalcy in the near future.
  • Dr. Anthony Fauci told CBS This Morning in an interview that taking a trip this summer “can be in the cards” if Americans continue to abide by social distancing protocols.
  • As of Wednesday afternoon, morning than 420,000 Americans had tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

At the moment, the list of priorities for most Americans does not include summer vacation, but as cabin fever starts to set in for the millions of people who are doing their best to stay inside as the novel coronavirus pandemic continues to put us all at risk, some hope certainly wouldn’t hurt. And that’s exactly what Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, offered early on Thursday when speaking to CBS This Morning about the response to the pandemic.

  • Apple will unveil iOS 14 later this year at WWDC.
  • The coronavirus prompted Apple to cancel its in-person WWDC conference and instead put on an online-only event.

A new report from 9to5Mac reveals that iOS 14 may make it a lot easier for users to discover and explore new third-party apps. According to the report, a newly unearthed API from a recent build of iOS 14 suggests that iOS 14 will enable users to use a QR code and subsequently experience limited aspects of an application’s user experience without having to download the app in the first place.

The report notes that the API is known as “Clips” and, as the name implies, will let developers offer “interactive and dynamic content from their apps even if you haven’t installed them.” Of course, developers will be able to choose what portion of an app will be made available to users in the form of a “floating card that shows a native user interface instead of a web page.”

FDA warns that Miracle Mineral Solution won’t cure coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The FDA warns that bleach won’t cure the coronavirus in a letter targeting websites that sell a form of the chemical under the name Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS).
  • Chlorine dioxide and other types of bleach do not kill the novel coronavirus, but can cause additional health problems if ingested.
  • There are no COVID-19 cures or vaccines at this point, and you can’t take anything to prevent an infection.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In late January, when the novel coronavirus outbreak still looked manageable, we told you the coronavirus can’t be cured with bleach, or anything else for that matter. Some sites were selling bleach cures for the virus at the time. Nothing has changed since then. There is no miracle cure for COVID-19. The only way we’ll be immune to the disease is to either fight off an infection or get a vaccine. And some sites are still selling the same drugs.

If you hear of any Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) cure that can treat the new infectious disease, you should stay away from it. MMS is a variation of bleach (chlorine dioxide) which can be very dangerous if ingested. And the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission have issued a stern warning to several sites promoting the supposed COVID-19 treatment

The device that you see in the image at the top of this article is the updated Ring Alarm Keypad, which features a completely new design and one-touch buttons that allow you to quickly request the police, the fire department, or medical assistance in your area with a single tap.

Ring also updated the Motion Detectors and Contact Sensors that ship with the kit to be smaller and easier to mount in any room of your home, and where the old hardware was a shiny plastic, the devices that ship with the new alarm kit have a matte finish that will likely blend in better with the surfaces you place them on.

This is how much damage you can cause by ignoring social distancing

  • A new CDC case study has revealed the impact just one person can have when they don’t adhere to social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • One family member with mild symptoms attended two family gatherings in Chicago and ended up infecting 16 family members with the coronavirus, resulting in three deaths.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

For anyone out there who’s been slacking a bit on their social distancing and quarantine behaviors lately, even though you may be starting to hear that the nation is seeing a few “glimmers of hope” in our coronavirus data, this one is for you.

How much damage can one person really do by not adhering to those social distancing guidelines, you might be tempted to ask yourself. A new case study the CDC conducted of a Chicago family provides the answer. In short, one family member displaying apparently mild symptoms of the virus showed up to a funeral, and that set off a chain reaction of infection within the family — resulting in 16 family members being infected, as well as three, sadly, dying from the virus.

Expert warns obesity is a major risk factor for coronavirus patients

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Obesity is a major risk factor for COVID-19 patients, France’s top epidemiologist says.
  • Novel coronavirus patients who suffer from other medical conditions, obesity included, may experience more severe COVID-19 illnesses.
  • The expert warned that even young COVID-19 patients who are overweight are at risk.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The global COVID-19 death toll approaches 95,000 as of Thursday afternoon out of the more than 1.5 million confirmed cases. The novel coronavirus needed just 75 days to take that many lives, and the worst may be yet to come. Social distancing measures are in place in several countries, and they’ve helped keep the numbers down. Some governments managed to flatten the curve through aggressive testing, contact tracing, and isolation procedures, while others were able to lower the fatality rate. But countries like the US, Spain, Italy, and France continue to suffer. They account for nearly 830,000 cases between them, and almost 60,000 deaths.

Most people who are infected with the novel coronavirus will survive. Some are entirely asymptomatic. Others experience a milder version of the disease, and most people will never be admitted to a hospital. But the elderly and patients who have underlying medical conditions are most at risk of developing complications. And obesity can impact the COVID-19 prognostic severely, France’s top epidemiologist says.

The coronavirus pandemic might be causing all kinds of delays across just about every industry, but Russia’s Roscosmos isn’t letting a global health crisis prevent it from sending humans into space. Early Thursday morning a trio of space travelers rode a Russian Soyuz spacecraft skyward toward their destination at the International Space Station.

The mission included NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy as well as a pair of Russian cosmonauts, Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, both of Roscosmos. The trio will replace three members of the current ISS expedition who are scheduled to depart the space station in just over a week’s time.

It’s no secret that Google will launch an affordable Pixel phone in the coming weeks. We’ve already seen plenty of Pixel 4a leaks detailing its design, specifications, and price tag. The phone should have been unveiled at Google’s yearly developer conference, but there won’t be an I/O event this year, not even online.
