Google bans employees from using Zoom on work laptops
- Zoom has become one of the most popular video conferencing services in the world as the coronavirus pandemic forces us to find new ways to communicate with one another.
- Zoom is also riddled with security and privacy vulnerabilities, which is why Google has decided to bar its employees from using the software on their work computers.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of the more interesting stories to arise from the novel coronavirus outbreak has been the ascent of Zoom. The once-niche video conferencing software has suddenly become the go-to solution for millions of people all around the world that want to keep in touch with their friends, their family, and even their coworkers. Free users were even willing to put up with the 40-minute time limit, but as researchers dug into the software, it became increasingly clear that the Zoom video calling service was a breeding ground for privacy issues and safety concerns.
First came “zoombombing,” which is when uninvited guests burst into your meeting unannounced. That was just the tip of the iceberg, as we later discovered that email addresses and profile pictures were being leaked, the service’s encryption was subpar, and thousands of private Zoom videos could be found online.

Researchers find a way to use Face ID while wearing a coronavirus mask
- To prevent the coronavirus from spreading, the CDC now recommends people put on a mask or face covering when going outside.
- This has made it difficult, if not impossible, for users to unlock Face ID and access their iPhones.
- Researchers have recently discovered an imperfect solution to this problem.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When Apple abandoned Touch ID for Face ID with the introduction of the iPhone X, not everyone was completely on board. Touch ID, after all, was incredibly quick and reliable. As a result, the idea that Apple was going to replace it with facial recognition technology that was seemingly brought back from the future seemed like a risky move at best.
In reality, though, the rollout of Face ID was largely smooth. In fact, there’s a case to be made that Face ID has long been the most reliable facial recognition software out on the market. With that said, the recent coronavirus outbreak has made using Face ID a little bit tricky given that many people are now donning face masks when they go outside.

Scientists warn that Trump is wrong: Warm weather won’t kill coronavirus
- Members of the National Academy of Sciences committee sent a letter to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy warning the administration that warmer weather won’t stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.
- President Trump said in the past that warmer weather will make the virus disappear “miraculously,” starting in April.
- COVID-19 caseloads in countries with warmer climates, as well as coronavirus cases from warm US states like California and Florida, prove the virus can be very infectious regardless of the weather.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
President Trump has said on more than one occasion that warmer weather will kill the novel coronavirus. He’s wrong. “When it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away,” he said at a rally in New Hampshire on February 10th. The US had only 12 cases at the time, although countries from warmer climates, including Australia and Singapore, were providing direct evidence that warmer weather would not kill the virus or reduce its contagiousness. In total, there were more than 42,000 cases in the world on that day, most of them in mainland China.
Two months and nearly 1.5 million cases later, it’s increasingly clear that weather alone can’t defeat the virus. The increasing caseloads in Florida and California also prove that point. Scientists have even more data on the SARS-CoV-2 survivability in various environments, and some of them have sent the White House an official letter to warn that a heatwave will do little to stop the COVID-19 spread.

This is how much you should be tipping delivery drivers right now
- People are relying on delivery drivers for services like DoorDash, UberEats, and Grubhub more than ever during the coronavirus pandemic, when most of us are confined to our homes.
- Those drivers are getting extra business, but they’re also putting their health in increased jeopardy by being around the public more — oftentimes, getting the same level of tips they did pre-crisis.
- Here’s a rough guide for how much you should consider tipping right now, for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Many of us around the country have been under a stay-at-home order thanks to the coronavirus pandemic for around a month now, which means, among other things, relying on delivery drivers like never before. Drivers for services like DoorDash and UberEats as well as other non-restaurant services like Instacart are in more demand than ever — and, thanks to their increased business, they’re also coming into contact with more customers than before and putting their health potentially in greater jeopardy.
Often, for the same level of tips they were making even before the crisis began. Which begs the question: How much should you be tipping delivery drivers right now? (Hint, more than you were tipping before now.)

Why coronavirus is so much worse for smokers
- Coronavirus attacks vulnerable pathways in the lungs of smokers and patients with COPD, a new study suggests.
- Those with COPD or who currently smoke have a greater amount of an enzyme that coronavirus uses as an “entry point.”
- Quitting smoking lowers the amount of this enzyme in the lungs and could help prevent serious COVID-19 complications.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has affected individuals of all ages, races, and backgrounds, but some experience far more serious symptoms than others. Determining what risk factors play the biggest role in the severity of a COVID-19 infection is paramount to saving lives, and new research suggests a reason why smokers and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at a much higher risk of serious infections.
The research, which was led by Dr. Janice Leung of the University of British Columbia and St. Paul’s Hosptial, focuses on a molecule called ACE-2. ACE-2 (which stands for angiotensin converting enzyme II) is believed to act like an open doorway for coronavirus to infect lung cells, and new data suggests that smokers and those with COPD have far more of these “entry points” in their lungs than those with healthy lungs.

Here’s when coronavirus stimulus checks will start arriving
- The first wave of $1,200 coronavirus stimulus checks will reportedly begin going out on Thursday.
- If you filed your 2019 taxes and provided a bank account for your tax return, you could receive a direct deposit as early as this week, or by the end of next week at the latest.
- If you don’t get your $1,200, you can give the IRS your direct deposit details through a web portal.

Millions of Americans have been laid off or furloughed due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. Unless you’re able to do your job from home, chances are you’re not working right now, which is why one of the key elements of the US government’s $2.2 trillion relief bill is a $1,200 check for nearly every adult in America.

Pass the time in coronavirus quarantine by finding fun things to do with $6 smart plugs
- Tech-savvy gadget lovers and smart home novices alike can agree on one thing: Wi-Fi smart plugs are awesome.
- These tiny little boxes are used to add Wi-Fi connectivity and smart features to traditional “dumb” devices that otherwise would not be able to be controlled by a smartphone or smart home system.
- Beyond how great smart plugs are in general, there’s another reason to take advantage of today’s great deal on Gosund Mini Smart Plugs — figuring out fun new ways to use them is a great way to help pass the time with your family while self-quarantining.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Everyone loves smart plugs. After all, what’s not to love? If you’re a tech-savvy smart home connoisseur, Wi-Fi smart plugs allow you to connect all of your traditional “dumb” devices to whatever smart home system you might use, from Samsung’s SmartThings to Apple’s HomeKit and everything in between. If you’re an average consumer who is not terribly tech-savvy, you probably still love smart plugs because they make it wonderfully simple to control things in your home from your smartphone or with your voice.
Now, there’s another reason to stock up on some more smart plugs: Quarantine.
Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, responsible Americans across the country are self-quarantining. This means staying at home with your family and isolating as much as possible unless you absolutely need to go out for groceries or an emergency. That means we’re all spending a lot of time in close quarters and we need things to keep us busy, so finding fun new things to do with smart plugs could be just what the doctor ordered.
You can control just about anything that plugs into the wall for power, so the possibilities are practically endless. Here’s a nifty use case I came up with: I connected my outdoor LED landscape lighting to a smart plug so that I can turn all of my outside lights in the front and back on or off from my phone. I can also set schedules that automatically adjust based on sunrise and sunset each day, and I use SmatThings to enable another cool feature: I have all my lights set to turn on automatically anytime my Arlo cameras detect motion in the middle of the night.
Gosund Mini Smart Plugs are among the more popular plugs we cover here on the site, and you can pick up a 4-pack right now for $22.07 instead of $30 if you use the coupon code PDLT9T84 at checkout. That’s just $5.52 per plug, so you really can’t go wrong.

The CDC just changed key info about hydroxychloroquine on its coronavirus site
- The CDC corrected a page on its website that detailed therapeutic options for the novel coronavirus disease.
- A previous version included the actual dosage of the controversial hydroxychloroquine drug for COVID-19 patients, information that was based on anecdotal evidence rather than peer-reviewed studies.
- As popular as the drug might be on TV right now, there’s no reliable scientific evidence that it can hasten the recovery from COVID-19 or prevent a coronavirus infection.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
You’ve heard about chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine everywhere by now, and it’s all thanks to the novel coronavirus pandemic that’s shutting down countries around the world. The drug is just one of the various possible COVID-19 therapies that are in testing right now, but it’s so popular for one reason: President Trump parrotted a report he saw on the news that it could be a game-changer and that it can help us get rid of the illness.
The sad reality is that we’ve hardly reached a point where the science can back any of that up. There are limited studies that say anti-malarial drugs can help ameliorate the overall state of some patients. And there are equally limited studies that say it won’t make a difference. Then there’s anecdotal evidence from patients who think they’ve survived COVID-19 because of chloroquine therapy, just as there’s anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine can poison people who misuse the drug. And one person died because he took something that sounded like the miracle cure being talked about on TV.
Health experts keep warning us that hydroxychloroquine isn’t the miracle drug you’re looking for because the science doesn’t back up that idea. But even so, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published unusual guidance about the drug on its official coronavirus pages, which can easily be labeled as misinformation. Thankfully, the CDC has now fixed the error.
