Coronavirus lung scans are a puzzle for doctors
- Not all coronavirus patients appear to have lung damage, despite having low blood-oxygen levels.
- Scans show healthy lungs, but patients are struggling with oxygen anyway, leaving doctors puzzled.
- One possible explanation is that damaged areas of the lungs aren’t rerouting blood flow as they should, possibly due to some unique aspect of the novel coronavirus, but more research needs to be done to confirm this.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has already cost thousands of lives, and when it comes to the most serious symptoms of COVID-19, it’s the virus’s effects on the lungs that are the most serious. The virus is known to trigger pneumonia in the most severe of cases, often requiring assisted breathing for patients who are affected. However, as WebMD reports, scans of a patient’s lungs are sometimes mysteriously unhelpful.
When a patient suspected of having coronavirus is admitted, blood work is done and, in a significant number of cases, low oxygen levels are noted. In cases like this, doctors would expect to see obstructions or damage in the lungs or labored breathing, but some patients appear to be breathing fine and X-ray scans show lungs that look relatively healthy.

Doctors don’t understand this mysterious condition that kills coronavirus patients
- Doctors treating coronavirus patients have been trying to figure out the immune system’s “cytokine storm” that can kill COVID-19 patients.
- These “storms” can occur suddenly, even in patients who are recovering from the disease and people who don’t have other underlying conditions.
- Doctors have been using drugs to lower the immune response and avoid these “cytokine storms” with some success, although more studies are required.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The coronavirus nightmare is far from over, and we may be looking at a seasonal illness that keeps coming back. The first COVID-19 vaccines will be available next year at the soonest, and plenty of people will still die before then. As of Wednesday morning, there were more than 1,414,000 COVID-19 cases, including more than 83,000 deaths. The US alone accounts for nearly 400,000 COVID-19 patients and almost 13,000 deaths. The curve is yet to be flattened in many countries dealing with the epidemic, but with each day that goes by, scientists are figuring out new things about the illness. Like the fact that COVID-19 can develop neurological or cardiac symptoms. Or that the virus can be killed with ease by an anti-parasitic drug in lab conditions.
While a cure isn’t available and we need to wait even more time for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 drug mega trial to run its course, doctors have started figuring out why some people die. And it’s not just the elderly and those patients who have other underlying medical conditions who are at risk. It’s unexpected deaths in patients who seem to be recovering, only for the disease to take a sudden turn for the worst that can result in death. It’s apparently a “cytokine storm” at play, and doctors still don’t understand exactly why it happens.

Amazon deal puts Alexa anywhere in your home for $20, or in your car for $30
- We’ve seen different categories of Amazon devices go on sale each day over the past few weeks, and the star of the show this week is Amazon’s Echo smart speaker lineup.
- The insanely popular Echo Dot is 20% off at just $39.99 right now, the upgraded Echo is down to $79.99, and the top-of-the-line Echo Plus is $30 off at $119.99.
- Those are all great deals, but what if you want to spend as little as possible for your Alexa smart speaker — or what if you want Alexa in your car?
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
With the novel coronavirus pandemic continuing to devastate regions all across the United States, Amazon has shifted a large portion of its nationwide resources and devoted them to hospital and government order fulfillment. Things like N95 masks, hand sanitizers, and other crucial supplies are available only to hospitals and government buyers, and Amazon has freed up plenty of warehouse and shipping resources to devote to these efforts. That means the company is diverting resources away from its typical business, and many nonessential products are seeing long shipping delays as a result.
Needless to say, that doesn’t really apply to Amazon’s own devices.
Despite its strategic shift and its move away from advertising deals — though you can still find Amazon’s hidden deals page if you know where to look — Amazon has been launching new sales each week on various Amazon device lines. We’ve seen deep discounts on Fire tablets, Kindle eBook readers, and Fire TV devices, and now it’s Echo’s turn. Amazon is offering great discounts this week on all of its best-selling Alexa smart speakers, and we already told you about several sales. The best-selling Echo Dot is down to $39.99, the Echo is $20 off at $79.99, and the Echo Plus is $30 off at $119.99. Now, however, there are two more deals we need to tell you about.
Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Charcoal: $39.99
Echo (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Twilight Blue: $79.99
Echo Plus (2nd Gen) – Premium sound with built-in smart home hub – Charcoal: $119.99
The Echo Flex isn’t Amazon’s best-known Alexa smart speaker. In fact, this might be the first time you’re hearing about it. Amazon’s Echo Dot is a best-seller largely because it was the most affordable option out there for so long, but that’s not the case anymore. The newer Echo Flex retails for just $25 as opposed to $50 for the Echo Dot, and it plugs directly into the wall so it doesn’t even take up any space on your counter, desk, or table. Grab one right now on Amazon and you’ll only pay $19.99.
Echo Flex – Plug-in mini smart speaker with Alexa: $19.99
On top of that, there’s one more Echo deal that you need to know about. That’s right, it’s the Echo Auto that brings all of Alexa’s beloved skills to your car so you can access them on the go. This popular new device usually sells for $50 on Amazon, but it’s 40% off right now so you can get one (or more) for just $29.99. There’s also a special offer that gets you a free 3-month trial of Audible with your purchase!

Top 10 new shows everyone’s watching on Netflix and TV in coronavirus quarantine
- If you’re on the hunt for new shows to watch on TV or on your favorite streaming service, you’ve definitely come to the right place.
- This week’s list of the top 10 new shows and new seasons of returning shows is dominated by Netflix, as is expected, but there is one entry from a network we don’t see very often on these lists.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Most of the BGR team lives and works right around the novel coronavirus hot zones in New York and New Jersey, which means we’ve been in self-imposed quarantine for several weeks now. Let us tell you… it doesn’t get any easier. You do get used to it though, and it’s a weird feeling when every day is basically the same. Sometimes, the only things that separate one day from the next are which stories we cover here on the site and what we stream on Netflix when the workday is done.
If you’ve been streaming movies and shows or watching traditional TV much more frequently than usual, you’re definitely not alone. Unfortunately, watching more content means you run out of content to watch even faster than normal. Finding new shows might seem like it should be easy with a service like Netflix where there are 53 new original movies and full seasons of TV series set to be released in April alone, but all that content can often make things even more difficult when you’re looking for something new to watch. Where do you even start?

Kill coronavirus on your smartphone with a UV sanitizer from Amazon
- The only way to slow down the spread of the novel coronavirus is to self-quarantine, practice social distancing when you do have to go out, and wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds anytime you touch a surface that might have been touched by others.
- Even with the most careful people out there, however, there’s no way to ensure you avoid any and all contact with the new virus.
- Smartphones are widely known to be a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, but Amazon has UV-C smartphone sanitizers in stock that kill viruses including coronaviruses on your smartphone display or anywhere else on the device.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Everyone knows that your smartphone is a breeding ground for germs including bacteria and viruses. Needless to say, that’s a huge problem right now because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Since people are using their phones more than ever, we have to be particularly careful about what we touch and when. Washing your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds after you go food shopping is important, but what good is it if you were using your smartphone in the supermarket and then you start using it again after washing your hands?
Smartphones in general are practically always filthy, and phone displays in particular are breeding grounds for germs. That includes all sorts of things like bacteria and viruses, including coronaviruses. If there’s coronavirus on your phone and you touch your face after handling it, it’s all too easy to get a COVID-19 infection. And if you make or take a phone call and touch the phone screen to your face, that’s even worse.
First of all, don’t use your actual handset for phone calls anymore. Get yourself a pair of discounted AirPods on Amazon if you don’t already have a Bluetooth headset, and use that instead. But you should also clean your smartphone as often as possible, at least once or twice a day even if you don’t go outside your home.

Clorox wipes are great for cleaning your iPhone or Android and for killing any viruses that might be lurking on its surface. Unfortautnely wipes and other sanitizer cleaners are still very difficult to come by in most areas. Thankfully, there’s another great option that’s in stock right now at Amazon, though that likely won’t be the case for much longer now that we’ve let the cat out of the bag.
The HoMedics UV-Clean Phone Sanitizer Case and Eshake UV Cell Phone Cleaner are two popular options among our readers for smartphone sanitizers that use UV-C light to sanitize your phone. You can use either of these devices to clean all the surfaces of your phone in just a few minutes. I have the HoMedics model myself, and I use it at least twice a day every single day. It’s a portable case and the top expands like an accordion to fit your phone and bathe it in UV light. UV light, by the way is confirmed to kill viruses including coronaviruses. The case runs for a minute or two at a time, and I typically do two cycles on each side, flipping the case itself in between each cycle.
Eshake’s model is another popular option, though we haven’t tested it ourselves. Give one or both a shot, but do it soon because they’re definitely going to sell out soon.

The PS5’s new controller might confirm an exciting PlayStation 5 feature
- The brand new DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 comes with a feature that seems to confirm a series of PS5 rumors based on Sony patents.
- The PS5 controller comes with a microphone array that supports talking with other players without the use of a headset.
- These are the sort of hardware and software features that are critical for Sony’s rumored game-centric virtual assistant.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
After a disappointing PlayStation 5 event a few weeks ago that revealed the PS5’s main specs, Sony is finally ready to show some of the new PlayStation’s design language. The company surprised fans on Tuesday with an unexpected announcement: the PS5’s controller will be called DualSense, and it’ll sport an exciting new design. The actual PlayStation 5 is nowhere in sight, but that controller just looks amazing. The DualSense name and design might be new, but we already knew some of the controller’s main features. Back in October, Sony showed off a prototype of the device and talked at length about the controller’s new feedback capabilities. That’s what the DualSense announcement boils down to as well. Sony explains the changes it had to make to the controller for the new haptic feedback features. But the new controller also packs an exciting feature that practically confirms one of the most exciting PS5 rumors to date.

How to add a PIN to a Netflix profile and make sure it actually works
- Netflix’s new parental controls include the option of locking down profiles with 4-digit PINs.
- Setting up a PIN is very easy and can be a convenient way to restrict access to Netflix and even prevent the creation of additional profiles on a shared account.
- However, the feature is only good as long as people who use your Netflix account on various devices don’t know your password.

Netflix on Tuesday announced a series of features meant to give parents more control over what their children watch. The move couldn’t have come at a better time, considering what’s happening with the world right now. The novel coronavirus pandemic shut down regular life. Parents and kids have to spend more time at home, and they’ll consume more entertainment than usual, with Netflix coming in handy in this regard. The streaming giant has plenty of content for all ages, and supports multiple profiles, so that family members can keep track of their favorite shows. One of the features Netflix just introduced is support for PINs, which can be used to protect profiles.

If you obsessed over Netflix’s ‘Love is Blind,’ put its next reality series on your radar
- New Netflix series are still being added to the service, despite the coronavirus pandemic that’s shut down production on a large number of Netflix projects.
- The streamer has been crushing it lately on the reality show front, and a new such series is coming to the service later this month: Too Hot to Handle, along the lines of its past hits like Love is Blind.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
In the weeks before we were all stuck at home and too scared to go anywhere because of a killer virus (which sounds more like a bad movie plot than the scary world we’ve actually been living in for the past month), Netflix hadn’t yet hooked millions of viewers on the flamboyant, dirty South, too-crazy-to-be-true antics of an insane tiger breeder. No, back in those halcyon days we were still bingeing guilty-pleasure reality shows on the king of all streamers — series like The Circle and then, before the pandemic hit, Love is Blind.
Netflix has been crushing it on the reality show front lately, never mind that it started off its original content efforts by striding down the prestige road a la HBO with shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. It really is a testament to how adept Netflix has gotten over the years, that it’s able to conjure durable brands on its own, be they a show like Stranger Things or Love is Blind — the latter being built around an experiment about whether a group of strangers can be sent off to live in pods and “meet” each other sight-unseen to see whether or not attraction forms, or whether the love at first sight thing actually depends upon the, you know, sight. It was one of the most popular series on the streamer for weeks following its premiere on the streamer back in mid-February — and if you were a fan of it or The Circle (a similarly voyeuristic look at the interactions between a group of competitors in a quasi-social experiment), you might be happy to know that a new Netflix series right in this same vein is just around the corner. It’s called Too Hot to Handle, and it’s scheduled to debut on Netflix on April 17.
