This potential new coronavirus vaccine is a fingertip-sized patch

  • A new coronavirus vaccine candidate might deliver its payload via a fingertip-sized patch made of sugar microneedles infused with a critical SARS-CoV-2 component.
  • Researchers are targeting the virus’s spike protein that allows it to latch onto human cells during infection.
  • The vaccine showed promise in mice, which developed a robust immune reaction to the COVID-19 virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The race is on to develop vaccines for the novel coronavirus that could provide long-lasting immunity and hopefully eradicate the COVID-19 disease. Dozens of vaccine candidates are in development around the world, including two that have reached the human trials phase in the US and China. In addition to boosting the immune response and creating the antibodies that would defeat the virus, the vaccine has to be safe for use. That’s why these vaccines likely won’t be ready for at least 12 to 18 months. The best-case scenario for one of them is to start being used on healthcare workers only as soon as this fall.

Not all vaccines have to be administered with a syringe, and researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have developed a vaccine that would be deployed via a fingertip-sized patch.

Your smartphone deserves this 15W wireless charger for $5 on Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Wireless chargers are probably the most popular smartphone accessories we cover here at BGR Deals, unless you consider headphones to be smartphone accessories. Of course, it’s not exactly difficult to figure out why wireless chargers are so popular right now. There’s nothing quite as liberating as kissing charging cables goodbye and never having to fumble with another cord or connector again. When you want to charge up your phone, just place it on the wireless charging pad or wireless charging stand and you’re done.

The other reason wireless chargers are so popular is that they seem to go on sale all the time. We’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of great deals on wireless chargers come and go over the past couple of years alone, and you can often find popular models on sale at great prices. For all the deals we’ve seen throughout the years though, we’ve never seen anything quite like the deal Amazon is running right now on the Letscom Ultra-Slim 15W Fast Wireless Charging Pad.

Most fast wireless charging pads and stands have two different fast charging modes in addition to regular old 5W wireless charging. First, they have a 7.5W charging mode for iPhone models like the iPhone 11 series, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and others. That’s the fastest wireless charging speed Apple’s various iPhone models support. Then, they also have a 10W fast wireless charging mode because many Android phones support that faster charging speed. There are a handful of Android smartphones that support even faster 15W wireless charging though, and this Letscom can handle that as well.

Ready for the best part? This top-rated Letscom 15W fast wireless charging pad is somehow on sale right now for just $6.99! That’s one of the lowest prices we’ve ever seen on any wireless charger, let alone a model that supports 15W charging. Definitely hurry and grab one because you don’t want to miss this opportunity.

LETSCOM Wireless Charger, Qi-Certified 15W Max Fast Wireless Charging Pad Ultra Slim, Compatibl…: $5.09

  • Type C Cable: Type C cables (included) allows our qi wireless charger to work at a faster rate. (Note: make sure the charger is placed in a cooler area while charging). You can insert the connector in both ways, so it enables your phone and fast wireless charger to share with this one cable.

Echo Dot just got its first big discount in months

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon has shifted much of its focus away from so-called nonessential goods so it can devote more resources to shipping medical supplies to hospitals.
  • Despite the huge temporary change, there are still new deals that pop up each week on popular products including Amazon devices.
  • We’ve seen several sales already on this like Fire TV Sticks and Kindles, but this week Amazon is offering deep discounts on the Echo Dot and other best-selling Alexa speakers.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Pretty much everyone out there at this point is aware of Amazon’s temporary strategic shift. Maybe you saw the big announcement or perhaps you’ve just been trying to shop for various common items and noticed that they’re not shipping until sometime in late April or even early May. Whatever the case, Amazon has decided to temporarily suspend shipments of most nonessential goods, and it’s also not restocking them until sometime toward the end of the month. This way, the company can free up warehouse space and delivery capacity for things like medical supplies and cleaning products going to hospitals and government customers.

While most shipments of nonessential products are delayed, there are still plenty of deals to be found on popular items that will be delivered immediately. And needless to say, plenty of Amazon’s own devices are included among them. We’ve seen new deals each week on Amazon devices, and this week brings deep discounts on the wildly popular Echo Dot as well as several other Echo speakers and Echo Show smart displays.

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Charcoal: $39.99

The Echo Dot is one of Amazon’s two best-selling products of all time, and it’s pretty easy to see why. You get access to Alexa and all the awesome skills that come along with it, but the Dot costs a fraction of what Amazon charges for other Echo speakers. It’s normally just $50, but a limited-time sale slashes 20% off that already-low price, cutting your cost to just $39.99.

Aside from the Echo Dot, you’ll also find two more deals on Alexa speakers that offer the biggest discounts of the year. First, you can snag the $100 Echo speaker for just $69.99, a savings of $20. Meanwhile, the upgraded Echo Plus is $30 off at $119.99 instead of $150, and you can snag the entry-level Echo Flex that fits anywhere for only $19.99.

Echo (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Twilight Blue: $79.99

Echo Plus (2nd Gen) – Premium sound with built-in smart home hub – Charcoal: $119.99

Echo Flex – Plug-in mini smart speaker with Alexa: $19.99

If you want the best possible Alexa experience Amazon has to offer, you obviously need to toss a display into the mix. Lucky for you, all three of Amazon’s Echo Show devices are also discounted this week, and they’re back down to Black Friday’s fantastic prices. The $90 Echo Show 5 is on sale for $59.99, the $130 Echo Show 8 is down to $89.99, and the flagsip Echo Show with its large 10.1-inch HD display is on sale for $99.99 instead of $150.

Echo Show 5 – stay connected and in touch with Alexa – Charcoal: $59.99

Echo Show 8 – stay connected and in touch with Alexa – Charcoal: $89.99

Echo Show (2nd Gen) – stay connected and in touch with Alexa – Charcoal: $179.99

Amazon’s daily deals page is now hidden – here’s how to find the best sales

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s featured deal section recently vanished from its mobile apps and website as the company temporarily focuses on selling essential goods to hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
  • What many people don’t realize is that the deals haven’t disappeared, they’re just no longer featured or linked on Amazon’s home pages.
  • In this post, we’ll show you how to get to Amazon’s special deals page — which you should definitely bookmark — and we’ll highlight some of today’s top deals.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you’re a bargain hunter like me, one of the first things you do each day is load up Amazon to check for the latest deals. You head to Amazon’s home page right when you sit down at your computer each morning, or you fire up the Amazon app on your smartphone. If you’re on your phone, you can see Amazon’s marquee deal of the day right after the app opens and you can easily tap a link to see all of Amazon’s featured deals. If you’re on a computer and you visit the website instead, your mouse instinctively heads for the deals link that’s prominently placed right under the search box.

Of course, if you open the app on your phone right now, featured deals are nowhere to be found. And if you’re on a computer, that deals link you’re so accustomed to clicking each morning and periodically throughout the day has disappeared. Has Amazon stopped running daily deals and lightning deals due to the novel coronavirus pandemic?

No, of course not. Amazon might have temporarily shifted many of its resources away from nonessential goods so that it can focus on shipping essentials and medical supplies to hospitals, but it’s still a deals site first and foremost. Yes, it’s true that Amazon’s deals are a bit harder to find right now, but they’re still available, hidden on the site just waiting to be found. So how do you find them? It’s simple, just visit this special Amazon deals page, which you should definitely bookmark right now.

Amazon Deals Of the Day and Featured Sales: $0.99+

Lo and behold… it’s the Amazon deals page you’ve been missing! There, you’ll find all the featured Gold Box deals of the day that Amazon is offering on any given day, as well as a slew of lightning deals and featured deals from across every product category you can imagine.

Head to that page right now, for example, and you’ll find AirPods 2 on sale at up to $30 off and AirPods Pro shipping out right away at the lowest price ever, a big sale on Amazon’s Echo Dot and other Echo products like the Echo Show 5 and Echo Plus, over 1,000 discounted books in Amazon’s monthly Kindle deals section as well as a separate sale on best-selling Kindle books, up to $60 off Fitbit activity trackers, an Anker fast wireless charging pad for just $8.99, the lowest price of 2020 for the only smartphone-connected Instant Pot, iPhone 11 cases starting at $7, two multicolor LED smart light bulbs for $20, and plenty more.

There are plenty more deals where those came from, and that doesn’t even cover the hundreds of lightning deals available on Amazon at any given time. Head over to the Amazon deals page to check it all out, and don’t forget to bookmark it so you can keep checking back daily.

Xbox Series X release might be delayed

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Xbox Series X launch hasn’t been delayed because of the coronavirus, but things are still in flux, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said.
  • The safety and security of Microsoft teams and the quality of the product come first, so the COVID-19 pandemic could still alter the original launch plans for the console.
  • The exec said they’re not currently in a situation that would suggest the planned release date will be delayed, but he didn’t specify what that date is and it’s clear that safety is being prioritized before releasing on time.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Xbox Series X is one of the hottest products of the year, and during normal times it would be a priority for gamers and parents this holiday season. However, 2020 is hardly a regular year, with the novel coronavirus outbreak having significantly altered day-to-day life. The streets are empty in many countries around the world, as people are urged to stay indoors for as long as possible. Social distancing is one thing that works against COVID-19, as the virus can’t spread as fast if most people avoid contact with others. But lockdown and quarantine measures impact the way people work. Not everybody can work from home, and millions of people have lost their jobs in a matter of weeks. These factors could hinder the launch of the Xbox Series X and any other product for that matter. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in a new interview that the launch schedule hasn’t changed. Series X should still hit stores this winter. At the same time, however, he made it clear that there are no guarantees at this point. The safety of his teams comes first. The quality of the finished product is also important. These factors could alter the launch schedule of Series X.

Microsoft offers free Skype video chat as Zoom’s privacy nightmare continues

  • Skype’s Meet Now free video calling tool could be a great alternative to Zoom as the latter is scrambling to fix a slew of security and privacy issues.
  • Microsoft’s video conferencing app can be used without an account or app downloads and provides free, unlimited video calls.
  • Meet Now also supports video recording and screen sharing, features that can home in handy for work calls.

If you’ve been working from in the past few weeks, the chances are that you attended at least one meeting via Zoom video call. Zoom rose rapidly to popularity during the COVID-19 crisis, as it’s an easy to use app that delivers a reliable video calling experience. You don’t need to be a pro at video chat apps to set it up and run it comfortably. However, with each day that went by, we heard of novel ways Zoom was endangering your privacy and security. Zoom has been sharing data with Facebook, exposed thousands of emails to strangers, and allowed access to private videos. Add to that the fact that Zoom isn’t end-to-end encrypted as you were lead to believe, and you’ve got the full picture of an app you should discard until the company fixes it for good. That’s where Microsoft’s Skype comes in, as the app now offers users a Zoom-like experience.

Quibi is finally here: A new streaming video service bets big on short-form video

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Quibi is a new paid streaming video service that launches today in the US and Canada, offering short TV episodes and movie chapters you watch exclusively on your phone.
  • You can sign up for a 90-day free trial, after which the service — led by Hollywood executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and former Hewlett Packard CEO Meg Whitman — will cost $7.99/month (or $4.99 for a version with ads).
  • The launch slate includes new TV shows and movies from A-list talent like Reese Witherspoon, Sophie Turner, and Steven Spielberg.

Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Quibi is the name of a new streaming video service that launches today and that most of you probably haven’t heard too much about yet (with, you know, more pressing pandemic-related concerns right now and all), but here’s the thing: While it costs $7.99/month (or $4.99 with ads) and represents yet another paid subscription to squeeze into your budget, I’m planning to give it a try for one reason, and one reason alone. Despite the fact that I’ve got plenty of other streaming entertainment options that Quibi will never come close to supplanting.

I’m not trying it merely because it’s the brainchild of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the Hollywood impresario whose involvement is one of the main reasons why everyone in the industry is watching to see how this bold new media startup will fare. Nor am I game to give this a try because it’s already spent more than a billion dollars on launching a service that has around 50 shows to start with and will work up to almost 200 by the end of year one. Along those lines, Quibi is very much going the something-for-everyone route, rather than the curated approach of a service like Apple TV+, which means there’s a ton of content from tons of names you’ll recognize, everyone from Sophie Turner and Reese Witherspoon to Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Lopez, Sam Raimi, and lots of other A-listers.

  • As of Sunday night, almost 1.3 million confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus have been reported globally, according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University.
  • Just because most of us are quarantined and hunkering down at home to mitigate the spread of the deadly virus, though, that doesn’t mean we still can’t experience a small taste of the world around us to tide us over until it’s safe to travel again.
  • In this post, we’ll include links to photos and videos that let you virtually tour some of the top global landmarks, while we all look for new ways to entertain ourselves during these strange, uncertain times.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

So much of the world is shut down right now to limit the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, from businesses to museums, and public spaces like beaches, while millions of people around the world have been ordered to hunker down at home. Few places remain open to visit — businesses deemed “essential” like grocery stores and pharmacies — if you even wanted to take a chance and leave home right now. Getting to the other side of this crisis will take a tremendous amount of patience and adherence to social distancing, in spite of the loneliness and isolation that can stem from hunkering down at home for an indefinite period of time.

Heavy travelers like me are using this time to daydream and look forward to getting to visit somewhere new once again. And one way you can do that is by virtually “touring” the world through a number of digital services, right from the comfort of your couch, to make the quarantines a bit more bearable. We’ve covered a number of options already, including livestreams of major cities around the world plus services that let you remotely tour iconic museums, and in this post we’ll take a look at virtual tours you can take of incredible landmarks like the ancient pyramids and the Taj Mahal.

If you’re quarantined and using credit cards more, these are the best for everyday spending

  • Whether it’s ordering grocery deliveries, relying on Amazon more, or turning to meal delivery options like UberEats more than in the days pre-coronavirus, the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 virus that’s resulted in quarantines and stay-at-home orders has us all using credit cards more for daily purchases.
  • If you find yourself turning to plastic more these days instead of opening your wallet for cash, these are our recommendations for the best credit cards to use right now to make some of those everyday purchases.

One of the things I’ve noticed myself doing more of on the rare instances when I venture out of my apartment during the coronavirus crisis is that I’m either reaching for a credit card more often, or using Apple Pay, instead of paying for items with cash. Doing the latter means getting change, and it feels like more of a risk when you’re handling money back and forth while we’re all supposed to be practicing social distancing (which is why Apple Pay and contactless payment options are an especially great service right now).

Bottom line, right now is a great time to take stock of your credit card situation and consider whether you’ve got the right piece of plastic that rewards you for daily purchases such as gas, groceries and dining out. When it comes to choosing the right credit card for these expenses, consider which one is going to give you the most bang for your buck.
