  • The Office just celebrated the 15th anniversary of its US debut in March.
  • Fans have been having fun imagining how a coronavirus-themed episode of the show might unfold, with tons of script ideas posted to Twitter and Reddit in recent days.
  • It’s a bit of a lighthearted antidote to the growing pile of grim coronavirus news headlines, especially as the COVID-19 virus is expected to start resulting in an ominous surge of new cases in major cities around the US in the coming days.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s times like these when us die-hard fans of The Office sure wish it was still airing new episodes right about now. And not just because we want to see how things are faring with Dwight finally in control as regional manager, whether Jim and Pam are still happy together, and what antics Michael Scott is up to these days. No — we’ve actually got something else in mind.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen around the US and the rest of the world, fans of The Office have been taking to social media and, partly as an antidote to the pile of bad news and scary headlines that seems to grow by the hour, have been sharing Office fanfic in the form of coronavirus-themed episode scripts. You can find these all over Reddit and Twitter, and they will at a minimum seriously make you miss everybody’s favorite office drones from Scranton.

How hospitals may choose who lives and dies of coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Severe COVID-19 cases often require intubation and a mechanical ventilator for the patient to breathe, and he or she could be on a machine for weeks before being able to breathe unassisted again.
  • Medical professionals dealing with the novel coronavirus outbreak in the US are looking at frameworks to decide which patients can get access to this life-saving therapy in overcrowded hospitals.
  • Ventilators are in short supply in hot zones like New York, where doctors will have to decide who has a chance to live and die of COVID-19.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The sad reality is that many countries have failed to prepare accordingly for the novel coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak in China needed weeks to become a worldwide emergency and reached a pandemic status in just a couple of months. But many governments failed to take the basic measures that could have helped mitigate the disaster. Tests and personal protective equipment have been in short supply in most regions, and the situation might get worse before it gets any better. Ventilators — the machines that can push oxygen into the failing lungs of severe COVID-19 victims — are scarce in hot zones, and companies around the world can’t just manufacture and ship them overnight. Access to a ventilator might mean the difference between life or death for many people. But as hospitals become overcrowded with COVID-19 patients, healthcare professionals might be forced to make tough choices. They’ll decide who will get access to a ventilator, and therefore, who lives and dies.

Netflix arrivals and departures for the week of April 5th, 2020

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Netflix has a busy week lined up with 11 new releases coming to the streaming service, including a reality show about WWE wrestler The Big Show’s family.
  • The two Netflix original movies that stand out this week are Love Wedding Repeat (about a guy who tries not to ruin his sister’s wedding) and The Main Event (about an 11-year-old who joins the WWE).
  • Terrace House and Hi Score Girl are returning with new episodes as well.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Although I hope that there are those of you out there who get some use out of these features, I will admit that I have been paying extra close attention to Netflix’s new releases every week now that I am stuck inside all the time. It feels like any show or movie could be the next viral hit now that we’ve all quarantined ourselves, and I have a feeling that the Groundhog Day-esque romantic comedy Love Wedding Repeat will find an audience this week.

I also have to recommend Hi Score Girl for those of you adventurous enough to give anime a shot. The second and final season of the show is among the best seasons of television I’ve seen this year.

NASA’s bringing the worm back

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • NASA has revived a classic logo and will use it again for the upcoming SpaceX Crew Dragon mission to the International Space Station.
  • The red, wavy logo is dubbed “the worm,” and it’s instantly recognizable as a piece of NASA history.
  • NASA says it will continue to use the revived logo in various ways, though it didn’t offer any details as to where it might appear.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA is bringing back one of its most beloved and iconic logos that hasn’t been officially revived in almost three decades. The glorious NASA “worm” logo is officially back, and it will make its re-debut on the Demo-2 flight that will see a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carry a pair of astronauts to the International Space Station for the very first time.

The mission, which is scheduled for May, is the ultimate test for SpaceX, which is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew program that sought to produce crew-capable spacecraft that could be launched from US soil. NASA and Boeing were both tasked with the job, and SpaceX is the first of the two that is ready to carry NASA astronauts into space. Now, thanks to the spectacularly retro worm logo, we know that they’ll be flying in style.

Iceland’s early coronavirus testing model shows 50% of cases have no symptoms

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Iceland’s coronavirus testing campaign stands out as the country started aggressive COVID-19 screening months ago.
  • Iceland is testing all patients who are at risk or show symptoms, and anyone else who wants to get tested.
  • Current data shows that around 50% of those tested didn’t have symptoms indicative of infection with the novel coronavirus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A small island nation of 360,000 inhabitants, Iceland may prove to be a beacon of hope in fighting the novel coronavirus, as well as future viral outbreaks before they reach pandemic levels. The country has made the news a few times in the past few days for its COVID-19 work. Iceland is home to scientists that are at the forefront of genetic innovation, as they’ve been tracing the few mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen. That data will be useful for bringing the COVID-19 vaccines that are currently in development around the world to market.

Studying the genetics of the virus wouldn’t be possible without an extensive COVID-19 testing campaign, and that’s where Iceland’s approach stands out. The country started testing well before the disease overwhelmed its medical system, and it discovered that around 50% of cases had no symptoms. The early testing campaign also had another side effect on the community, as Iceland didn’t have to impose as strict lockdown measures as other countries.

5 tips for using coronavirus masks (and how to make your own)

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The CDC is now recommending the use of cloth masks in public settings in an attempt to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.
  • Cloth face coverings may not be as effective as surgical masks or N95 respirators, but the general public should avoid buying medical-grade masks, which are in short supply and should go to medical professionals before anyone else.
  • Face coverings of any sort will not reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission along with other essential precautions. Strict social distancing measures, frequent hand washing, and not touching the face are even more critical than using masks in public settings.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) changed its tune on the use of masks for the general public in just a matter of days. It was just last week that we were looking at comparisons between Asia, and the US and Europe when it comes to using masks in public. We’ve seen studies that said the novel coronavirus can linger in the air in so-called micro-droplets that don’t settle on the ground as fast as larger sized droplets. Some speculated that the virus can travel for farther distances than the 6 feet that appear in all COVID-19 social distancing warnings. The CDC then recommended that people should wear cloth masks instead of the surgical masks and N95 masks (which we’ll call respirators henceforward) that are in short supply for healthcare workers. This is a massive change of policy that shouldn’t go unnoticed, so here are a few tips to make the most of using masks in the coming weeks.

The most-watched Netflix shows during March’s coronavirus quarantines

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Netflix is continuing to provide a much-needed respite from the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak that’s responsible for most US residents being confined to their homes right now and businesses having to remain shut down for a while longer.
  • Our list of the most-watched TV shows on Netflix during March reflects the series that people were bingeing the most as the first wave of quarantines and stay-at-home orders began to come down.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the most certain things about pop culture is how uncertain a task it is to try and pick winners and losers. To forecast what might wind up as a hit and what ends up on the historical scrap heap of forgettable movies, TV shows, and the like. Consider, for example, this utter weirdness that no one saw coming — that a flamboyant, eccentric tiger breeder named Joe Exotic will go down as the defining pop icon of the quarantine era. Netflix dropped its buzzy documentary Tiger King right as the coronavirus outbreak was entering its most critical stage, resulting in shutdowns and quarantines around the US — and this insane new show from Netflix was right there waiting to be discovered and binged.

After building up a head of steam thanks to strong word of mouth that circulated online, the show emerged as a hit — and it’s so popular, in fact, that Netflix is adding an extra episode next week. Was it the most popular Netflix series for the month of March, based on the regular data that informs our monthly rankings? Read on.

  • Zoom’s video conferencing software has soared in popularity over the past few weeks as millions of people remain stuck at home on coronavirus quarantine.
  • Zoom’s privacy record leaves much to be desired as the company has faced one controversy after another.
  • Most recently, it was discovered that thousands of private Zoom video chats can be viewed online.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With millions of people stuck at home because of the coronavirus, Zoom’s video conferencing software has absolutely skyrocketed in popularity over the past few weeks. Just this week, the company said that the number of people using its software on a daily basis jumped from 10 million in December to 200 million in March. That’s an astounding increase and, not surprisingly, shares of Zoom have more than doubled in that same period.

Zoom’s ascension, however, hasn’t been an entirely smooth ride. The company in recent weeks has had to contend with one controversy after another. At first, word surfaced that the Zoom app on iOS was sending analytics data to Facebook, regardless of whether a user had a Facebook account of not. Following that, we learned that email addresses and photos of some Zoom users were leaking out. And of course, there was that pesky issue of strangers “zoombombing” third-party calls.
