Don’t be surprised if it takes a few months to get your coronavirus stimulus check
- The Trump administration is expected to start sending out the first wave of coronavirus stimulus checks in a couple of weeks, which will provide individuals with as much as $1,200 and couples with up to $2,400 (plus $500 for each child a parent has who’s under 18).
- Americans whose checks end up in the latter wave of mailouts from the IRS, however, may not get their checks for a few more months, according to a House Democratic memo.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Let’s get the good news out of the way for those of you eagerly anticipating your coronavirus stimulus check from the Trump administration, which will provide as much as $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for couples. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin promised during Thursday afternoon’s White House coronavirus task force briefing that the money would actually start going out in two weeks, as opposed to his initial assurance of three weeks.
An important caveat, though: Those of you who will be in the first wave of checks will have to have your banking information already on file so that the money can come to you in the form of a direct deposit. Alternatively, a web portal is being set up so that you can give the IRS that information to go ahead and get yourself near the front of the queue. The bad news, though, is for those of you who’ll be waiting for a paper check in the mail.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope shows off its shiny new mirror
- NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope takes one big step towards eventually being cleared for launch by arranging its mirror array.
- The telescope’s current launch date is 2021, but that may change as the coronavirus pandemic has forced a reduction in the workforce.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has seen far more than its fair share of delays since being formally announced. The spacecraft is so far over budget and behind schedule that it’s almost comical, and much of the blame rests with the company that NASA hired to build much of the telescope, Northrop Grumman.
However, despite its continued problems, the telescope is slowly coming together. A new update from NASA shows the telescope finally stretching its legs… er, well, stretching some of its moving parts, at least. A recent test demonstrated the ability of the telescope to fully deploy its shiny new mirror, which is one of the first things it’ll have to do after being sent to space, and before it can actually gaze deep into the cosmos.

Google’s new AI tool will transform your boring photos into iconic works of art
- ‘Art Transfer’ is a new feature from Google that can transform your photos into historical works of art.
- ‘Art Transfer’ relies on advanced AI and does all of its computation directly on your device.
- The feature is free to use and can be found on Google’s Arts & Culture app.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If boredom is kicking in after a few weeks of mandatory quarantine, you might want to check out a new feature on Google’s Arts & Culture app called Art Transfer. The feature makes it easy to transform your own photos into historic pieces of art. More specifically, the app takes advantage of AI technologies to take a photo and recreate it in any number of artistic styles from the painting world.
As an example, you can take a photo of your dog and see what it would look like if it had been painted by Lee Krasner, Franz Marc, and of course, more well-known artists like Leonardo DaVinci and Edward Munch. Using the feature is pretty straightforward and surprisingly a lot of fun. It’s essentially an art-themed version of the Prisma app. Even photos of otherwise boring subjects — like a chair — look a lot more interesting re-imagined in the style of famous painters.

Tesla’s Model 3 helped anchor the company’s best first quarter in history
- Tesla delivered 88,400 vehicles last quarter, marking the best “first quarter performance” the company has ever had.
- Tesla’s Model 3 was once again the company’s most popular vehicle, with year over year deliveries increasing by nearly 50%.
- Model S and Model X deliveries, year over year, essentially remained unchanged.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Tesla earlier today announced that it produced nearly 103,000 vehicles during the first quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, deliveries for the quarter checked in at 88,400. Put simply, these numbers are remarkable, with Tesla noting that it represents the “best ever first quarter performance” in company history.
As to the delivery breakdown across the company’s product line, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Model 3 accounted for the vast majority of deliveries throughout the quarter. Specifically, Model S and Model X deliveries cumulatively checked in at 12,200 units while Model 3 and Model Y deliveries checked in at 76,200 units. And seeing as how Model Y deliveries didn’t even begin until two weeks ago, it’s clear that the Model 3 certainly anchored Tesla’s performance this past quarter.

The coronavirus pandemic made the entire Earth quieter
- Coronavirus lockdown measures have forced daily life to change, and that means humans are making less noise on Earth.
- With less traffic and other human movements, seismologists are noticing huge dips in the amount of background seismic noise in their readings.
- A cleaner reading and less noise could give researchers a rare opportunity to capture particularly accurate data.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
You don’t have to look far to see societal changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Daily life is different these days for a lot of people, and those changes seem to have extended to our planet itself. We’ve already seen examples of how areas with heavy air pollution have cleared up dramatically as people remain home for extended periods of time, and now a new phenomenon has been observed. The Earth is actually quieter.
As Newsweek reports, researchers have noticed a significant decrease in the amount of vibration on Earth’s surface. This “seismic noise” is created by human movements such as driving, construction work, and anything else that might make the ground shake. Well, since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the whole planet is quite a bit quieter.

Amazon and Whole Foods workers will now get masks and daily temperature checks
- Amazon is planning to step up its protective measures for workers to check them for coronavirus symptoms.
- Starting next week, Amazon warehouse workers and workers at Amazon-owned Whole Foods will get masks and daily temperature checks.
- Those new protections come as coronavirus projections continue to worry public and private sector health officials, who keep warning the worst of the crisis is yet to come.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
After many of its workers have complained for weeks now of inadequate protective measures against the coronavirus and some even staged a walkout in recent days, Amazon is now pledging new steps to protect the health of workers in its massive warehouses as well as at Amazon-owned Whole Foods.
Starting next week, those workers will be given daily temperature checks, since having a fever is one of the signs of coronavirus infection. Sources have told Reuters that Amazon plans to use no-contact forehead thermometers at warehouse entrances to measure all workers coming in, and anyone with a temperature greater than 100.4 Fahrenheit will be sent home.
