iPhone 12 will release this fall, but future Apple products may be delayed

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The 5G iPhone 12 is still set to launch this fall as Hon Hai (aka Foxconn) is said to have resolved the labor issues that arose when the coronavirus pandemic shut down China.
  • iPhone 12 mass production will begin this summer, which is why its release date won’t be delayed.
  • Although the iPhone 12 may launch on time, other future Apple products could still be delayed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As secretive as Apple is about new products, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen a deluge of reports in recent days about whether or not the 2020 flagship iPhone will be delayed. It’s highly unlikely that Apple would even hint at an issue with its supply chain in the months leading up to the reveal of its phone, which means that until reports of mass production begin to arise, we are going to be inundated with stories about the iPhone 12’s release date.

That’s a reality we’re prepared to face, but on Monday, a report from Bloomberg regarding Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.’s disappointing quarterly profits noted that the 5G iPhone is still on schedule to launch this fall. We have no doubt that a new report will arise within the next 24 hours refuting this claim, but amidst all of the rumors and anonymously sourced reports, Bloomberg carries a great deal of weight when it comes to reporting on Apple.

FDA authorizes chloroquine for use in treating coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The FDA issued an emergency authorization of anti-malaria drugs for coronavirus treatment, as a vaccine is at least a year away.
  • Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine were brought to the public’s attention by President Trump’s recent remarks, and they have shown promise in COVID-19 therapy in a few limited studies.
  • COVID-19 patients aren’t advised to self-medicate; they should seek proper medical attention if they suspect a coronavirus infection.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The anti-malarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have come to the public’s attention following Trump’s recent remarks. The president said a few days ago that he felt “good” about them when it comes to treating the novel coronavirus, urging the FDA to speed up their use in COVID-19 therapies. Since then, we’ve heard of all sorts of things about the drugs. A man killed himself ingesting the wrong type of chloroquine-based chemical, and another coronavirus patient thinks the drug saved his life. On top of that, the World Health Organization (WHO) included the two drugs into a massive worldwide trial that’s looking at four different types of therapies that could speed up the recovery of COVID-19 patients. It’s no wonder that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally issued an emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine related to coronavirus treatment.

You’ll be shocked at how good these $24 home security cameras are on Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon is offering great deals on not two of the best options out there when it comes to home security cameras, the Wyze Cam and the YI Home Camera 3.
  • Both currently priced at around $24, the cameras offer features that match pricey high-end rivals at a small fraction of the cost.
  • At that price, you can buy eight of either one of these great home camera models and still spend less than you would on a single home security camera from some top brands.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s difficult to focus on anything other than the novel coronavirus outbreak right now, and that’s certainly understandable. It’s the most important thing happening in the world and it will continue to be for months and months to come. The United States now has more confirmed COVID-19 cases than any other country in the world and that’s in spite of the fact that only a fraction of people exhibiting symptoms can get tested since there’s still such a shortage on coronavirus tests. It’s bad and getting worse, but we also have to remember that life goes on and we have more than just the coronavirus to protect ourselves and our families from.

Amazon has two great deals right now on home security cameras that are just as good as a $200 Nest Cam for a tiny fraction of the price. The first is the Wyze Cam, which has all main features you might want as well as 14 days of free cloud storage for just $24 and change per camera. The second one is on the Yi Home Camera 3, which costs about the same amount but has some more advanced features as well as a 6-month free trial of YI’s cloud service. On top of that, you can get the first Yi camera for just $19.50 by using the coupon code GAXSJC8C at checkout.

So why would anyone choose the Wyze Cam over YI’s rival? The answer is simple: Amazon is shipping Wyze Cams right away, while new YI Home Camera 3 deliveries are now delayed until mid-April.

If you can wait that long, you should definitely go for the YI model. On top of all the main features you’d get with the Wyze Cam, the YI Home Camera 3 also includes advanced AI features like person detection and even sound analytics. The downside is that you only get free 7-day cloud storage for 6 months, and after that you’ll have to subscribe to YI’s cloud service if you want to keep using the cloud. $24.29 for all those features is still a crazy price though, and it’s great that you can get one for under $20 with the coupon.

YI Smart Home Camera 3 w/ 6-Month Cloud Service, AI-Powered 1080p 2.4G Wi-Fi Indoor Security Ca…: $19.50 – $24.29 (use code GAXSJC8C by 3/31)

As for the Wyze Cam 1080p HD smart home camera, it’s always a great value and it comes with 14 days of free cloud storage for free. That’s not a limited-time trial, mind you — you’ll enjoy free cloud storage for as long as you own your cameras. As we also mentioned, Wyze cameras are still shipping out right away on Amazon despite the retailer’s shift in focus away from nonessentials. You’ll pay $25.98 for one camera or $24.46 if you by them in 2-packs, and they’ll be on your doorstep in just a few days.

There’s a secret to saving on Amazon’s Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Stick 4K

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K are to of the best-selling devices the company has ever made, and they’re currently available at their full retail prices.
  • What most people don’t realize, however, is that there’s a way to save a few bucks on either model and even get them delivered faster.
  • Certified Refurbished versions of both Fire TV Stick models are in stock right now and are shipping out immediately, unlike most nonessential products right now on Amazon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread in many areas across the United States, there is a tiny morsel of good news to be found amid all the dread: more and more people are finally getting the message. People who have been taking the COVID-19 outbreak lightly in the early days of the pandemic are definitely beginning to realize the gravity of the situation. We’re all in this together and there absolutely will not be a miracle cure. The only way to slow the spread of COVID-19 and get this coronavirus pandemic under control in the US is if we all take the initiative and self-quarantine.

If you’re a healthcare worker or you have another job that is deemed essential, you have not choice but to put yourself in harm’s way. Please be safe by practicing social distancing and washing your hands as often as possible. Everyone else in affected regions, please stay home. Unless you’re going out to buy food or you’ve been instructed by your doctor to seek medical attention, just stay home. It’s the least we can do for our friends, neighbors, families, and all the brave people who are putting themselves in harm’s way.

You’re bound to get antsy during all that time spent indoors, and that even applies to people who are able to work or attend school from home. One good way to pass the time is to catch up on all the great movies and shows you’ve been missing lately. Heck, Netflix released 55 original movies and TV series in March alone, and there are plenty of great services that stream movies and shows for free if you don’t want to pay for Netflix right now. With a Fire TV device, you watch it all

Certified Refurbished Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, streaming media player: $44.99

Amazon is focusing mainly on shipping essentials right now, which means delivery estimates for other products including the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K are starting to slip. What you might not realize, however, is that there’s another way to get a new Fire TV dongle and you can save a few bucks in the process. Amazon has Certified Refurbished Fire TV Sticks and Certified Refurbished Fire TV Stick 4K media players in stock right now, and they’re shipping out right away as of the time of this writing.

Delivery estimates are bound to start to slip now that the cat’s out of the bag, but there’s nothing wrong with waiting an extra day or two if you’re saving money in the process. These are refurbs though, so there’s obviously a limited supply that could end up selling out soon. Of note, Amazon certifies that all these streaming media players look and function like new, otherwise you can return them for a full refund.

You’re ridiculous if you think this is better than the iPhone 12’s design

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple’s next-generation iPhone 12 release date is inching closer by the day, and the new phone series is set to feature the company’s first big smartphone redesign in three years.
  • While the iPhone 12’s overall look is expected to be much different from the current iPhone 11 models, the phones will still feature a notch at the top of the display and many people seem to be upset.
  • Newer Android phones like the just-announced Huawei P40 Pro feature a hole-punch design instead of a more traditional notch, but the reality is the design isn’t any better than Apple’s iPhone designs.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With April right around the corner, we’re now about five months away from seeing Apple unveil its new iPhone 12 series. Unless the novel coronavirus pandemic gets even worse than we’re already expecting it to in the coming months, the iPhone 12 will certainly debut in early September regardless of when it’s released. New reports that the iPhone 12 series release will be delayed pop up every other day at this point. Then on days in between, we see new reports that it’s still on track to hit store shelves in September. The simple fact of the matter is that no one knows for certain when the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro phones will be released right now — not even Apple’s top executives. The situation is fluid and changing on a daily basis, and there’s no way to know what the landscape will look like next week, let alone next month and beyond.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the release of the iPhone 12 series, there’s no doubt that we already know what the new iPhones will look like. The world’s top Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities started leaking details about the iPhone 12 lineup even before the iPhone 11 series was released. The phones will sport a new flat metal frame instead of rounded edges like Apple’s current iPhone models, and it’ll have an upgraded dual- or triple-lens camera system on the back, depending on which model you choose. It’ll also have a notch in the display on the front, and people are already whining about it.

5 things you need to avoid going crazy in coronavirus quarantine

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Things are getting exponentially worse in many regions of the United States, and more people are finally beginning to grasp the severity of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
  • That means more and more people are finally self-quarantining in an effort to slow the spread of the potentially deadly COVID-19 disease.
  • We’ve all stocked up on essentials, but there are a few more important purchases that can mean the difference between going crazy and actually enjoying some of your time in isolation.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

What’s done is done and at this point, there’s no going back. Instead of immediately communicating the true gravity of the situation, the White House chose to try to downplay the severity of the novel coronavirus outbreak as it made its way west from China. Now there are more than 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US and the death toll has climbed into the thousands, not a single person in his or her right mind is taking the outbreak lightly.

If you live in an impacted area, you absolutely must self-isolate and only leave your home if absolutely necessary, like to shop for groceries or to seek medical attention at the advice of your doctor. If you like in an area that hasn’t yet been impacted, at this point it may only be a matter of time. Do yourself a favor and start taking precautions now. Practice social distancing, wash your hands whenever touching surfaces, and stock up on some nonperishables in preparation for self-quarantine if the need arises.

In either case, there are some things you can get to remain productive and to help pass the time in self-quarantine.

Headphones

Spending quality time with family members is obviously important, but so is spending quality time alone. A good pair of headphones is a must-have to help drown out the world around you, and Amazon has some great options that are still shipping out despite the company’s temporary new policy on delivering nonessential items. AirPods Pro are back in stock and shipping immediately, which is definitely a rarity these days. You can also save a bunch of money on Apple’s AirPods 2 both with and without the wireless charging case.

Apple AirPods with Charging Case: $139.00

Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case: $169.00

Apple AirPods Pro: $249.00

If you want a less expensive option, the TOZO T10 true wireless earbuds have literally tens of thousands of 5-star ratings on Amazon and they’re on sale right now for just $35.99.

As for a great pair of over-ear headphones with active noise cancellation, we’ve got two terrific options for you. The class-leading Sony WH1000XM3 noise cancelling headphones that blow everyone’s minds are on sale at Black Friday’s price right now, and there’s a special bundle that includes a free 20,000 mAh portable charger. If you want more affordable cans that still sound great, the TaoTronics SoundSurge 60 ANC headphones have fantastic reviews and they’re on sale for $49.99.

A tablet

After weeks of spending tons of time together, you’re not always going to want to watch TV with the rest of your family. Also, you’re going to get tired of gaming and trying to read the news on your tiny smartphone screen. You’ll definitely want a great tablet, and the best option out there right now is Apple’s newest 10.2-inch iPad, which starts at just $279 instead of $329 right now at Amazon. If you’re looking to save some money, Amazon’s Fire 7 Tablet, Fire HD 8 Tablet, and high-end Fire HD 10 are all fantastic choices.

All-New Fire HD 10 Tablet (10.1″ 1080p full HD display, 32 GB) – Black: $149.99

An eBook reader

Tablets are great for reading the news and for reading books, but if you’re a big-time reader you’re definitely going to want a dedicated device that’s easier on the eyes. Needless to say, it doesn’t get any better than Amazon’s all-new Kindle and waterproof Kindle Paperwhite.

All-new Kindle – Now with a Built-in Front Light – Black – Includes Special Offers: $89.99

Kindle Paperwhite – Now Waterproof with 2x the Storage – Includes Special Offers: $129.99

Board games

All those other recommendations focus on things you can do on your own, but what about spending some quality time with family? You should definitely pick up some fun new board games — and Amazon knows how popular and important board games are, so they’re shipping out right away.

The Roku Express HD and Roku Streaming Stick+ are both on sale with big discounts right now, but shipping is delayed. If you want a straming media player anytime soon, you’re much better off going for the Fire TV Cube or a Fire TV Stick 4K. • The general director of the Chinse CDC said in an interview that the biggest mistake Europe and US are making when dealing with the novel coronavirus pandemic concerns masks. Everyone should be wearing masks in public, the official said.
  • Masks, and other personal protective equipment required for treating COVID-19 patients, are in critical supply in the US and other countries dealing with local outbreaks.
  • The US CDC has reiterated that nothing has changed when it comes to its masks advisory. Only those people showing COVID-19 symptoms should wear masks in public.

The novel coronavirus pandemic managed to catch the world by surprise despite what happened with China. Rather than increasing the production of critical personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectants, testing kits, and ventilators, many western governments went for a wait-and-see approach. Things escalated quickly in Italy, which proved to everyone else how serious COVID-19 is, and other countries followed. News from various countries ravaged by the virus proved that many governments lacked the resources to put up a fight, with many of them scrambling to purchase or manufacture some of the critical products mentioned above. The situation is especially troubling in some hospitals, where doctors do not have enough PPE for use with COVID-19 patients. Some of them have even started reconsidering resuscitation procedures in critical COVID-19 cases that might require CPR because of the PPE costs associated with them. So, if doctors and nurses can’t spare equipment, it’s up to everyone else to help by not hoarding these products. And that can explain why the CDC currently advises people to only wear masks out in the open if they suspect they’re infected, to limit the spread of the virus. However, the director-general of China’s CDC says the contrary. According to him, it’s a “big mistake” not to wear masks in public.

  • The Astro Slide 5G is a novel smartphone concept that can dual-boot Android and Linux and features a unique slide-out full QWERTY keyboard.
  • Thanks to a novel RockUp hinge, the Astro Slide 5G can be used as a tiny 6.53-inch laptop.
  • The PDA will be shipped to backers only in March 2021, assuming the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign target is reached. Preorders for the PDA start at $546.

If you’ve ever wanted to buy a large all-screen 5G smartphone that features a built-in, slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, now’s your chance. The Astro Slide 5G Transformer is the device in question, a 5G PDA that seems out of place in 2020. However, there’s clearly a market for this sort of product, as Planet Computers manufactured two similar gadgets in previous years, including the Cosmo Communicator and Gemini PDA. The Astro Slide 5G is the natural successor of that series of devices, embracing some of the features of its predecessors, complete with a series of notable upgrades.

Shopping during the coronavirus crisis: Check this website for in-stock groceries near you

  • Grocery shopping during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is one of so many mundane things we used to take for granted that’s dramatically changed.
  • Retailers like Target and Walmart have scaled back their hours, implemented social distancing guidelines, and the products you want, needless to say, aren’t always in stock.
  • Two college students have built a website, Instok.org, that checks retailers near you to let you know what items are, like the name says, in stock.

Shopping for groceries and other household essentials during the coronavirus crisis has become something of a complex logistical challenge to navigate. Never mind the safety aspect — of making sure you keep a good distance from other shoppers, practicing good hygiene, and sanitizing your hands. Groceries and other stores like Target generally have shortened hours now because of the pandemic. Moreover, you can’t count on a guarantee of the items you want being in-stock at your preferred store nearby, the way we all took for granted in the days before this crisis.

Checking websites for in-stock items before you set out to the store is probably a good idea, so that you’re not rolling the dice on whether an item is actually there or not (although it’s still a bit of a gamble, because I’ve found plenty of instances where a site says something like an item is there but in “limited availability,” which ends up really meaning it may or may not be there). Instead of checking multiple sites for different items, though, two students at the University of Texas have built a one-stop-shop website (Instok.org) that lets you type in specific items and see where all it’s in stock near you.
