These aren’t N95 face masks, but they’re better than nothing and they’re in stock now
- Medical-grade face masks that protect you against the novel coronavirus are almost impossible to find right now, and you shouldn’t buy them even if you can because healthcare professionals have a much greater need.
- Alternatives to N95 face masks don’t protect you quite as well, but they’re better than nothing and they’re in stock right now on Amazon.
- DIY face masks are another solution that might be even more effective, and they’re very easy to make with a few key supplies and things that you already have around your home.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Everyone is feeling the stress right now as the novel coronavirus outbreak grows worse and worse in the United States. When we’re stressed and afraid, we’re likely to do things that aren’t exactly rational… like hoard toilet paper. We also don’t typically follow instructions very well when we’re scared or afraid, and that’s why the general public has been buying up all the N95 medical-grade face masks people can get their hands on. Please stop. Right now. Healthcare professionals on the front lines are now suffering from a shortage of face masks, and these are the people we count on to help us when we’re sick. If they’re not properly protected, they’re going to be infected by COVID-19 and then we’re all screwed. So again, even if you find N95 face masks in stock somewhere, please don’t buy them.
The good news is that there are some good alternatives that you can use without putting healthcare workers — and therefore, yourself — at risk. Just yesterday we told you about a great DIY coronavirus face mask solution that’s super easy to make and only requires two supplies that you don’t already have lying around the house. One is a MERV 13 Pleated Air Filter and the other is an Activated Carbon Pad Charcoal Sheet for Air Filters, and both are in stock and shipping right now on Amazon.
AIRx HEALTH 20x20x1 MERV 13 Pleated Air Filter – Made in the USA – Box of 6: $35.99
Breathe Naturally Universal 16×48 Cut-to-Fit Activated Carbon Filter (4 Pack) Charcoal Air Filt…: $28.99
If you’re not the DIY type despite how easy it is to make those face masks, there’s another option: you can use face masks that aren’t N95, KN95, or another type of mask that’s certified for use by medical professionals. In hospitals around the world where supply shortages are at their worst, medical professionals are being instructed to use whatever is available like t-shirts and scarves to cover their faces.
The simple fact of the matter is that something is better than nothing, but we can at least get you better protection than a t-shirt or scarf. Amazon has 3-layer face masks that just came back in stock, and they’re ready to ship now so you don’t have to worry about waiting until late April like you do with some shipments. They’ll almost certainly sell out quick though, so grab a box or two while you still can. And when those inevitably sell out, you can try to find more using this Amazon search for face masks.
50 Pieces – Disposable – Anti Dust – Breathable Three Layer: $54.99

500,000 coronavirus tests a week is helping Germany keep the death toll in check
- Germany had more than 41,000 registered coronavirus cases as of Thursday afternoon local time, which makes it the world’s fifth-largest host of COVID-19 patients.
- The country has only reported 236 COVID-19 deaths, contrasting with other EU countries where the death toll is in the thousands.
- Germany’s secret weapon is extensive testing, as the country averages 500,000 tests per week.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The coronavirus pandemic seems unstoppable right now when you see how it has affected Western countries with advanced healthcare systems and strong economies. Countries including Italy, America, Spain, Germany, and France have all reported more than 25,000 COVID-19 cases each. Italy and Spain are the hardest-hit countries, with over 130,000 cases including 11,000 fatalities between them. The combined death toll for Italy and Spain accounts for half of the number of COVID-19 victims worldwide, which sits at over 23,000 at the time of writing. France and the US have reported more than 1,000 coronavirus fatalities each — France has over 29,000 cases and the US is pushing 80,000.
That’s why Germany’s statistics don’t add up when compared to other countries. Germany has reported over 41,000 cases as of Thursday afternoon local time, but just 236 fatalities. Germany’s secret is exactly what you might expect it to be: Extensive testing for the novel coronavirus that’s wreaking havoc around the world.

An Uber driver in New York died from coronavirus after picking up a sick passenger
- According to Johns Hopkins University, there have been over 80,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the US to-date, as well as more than 1,000 deaths.
- Among those who died from the COVID-19 coronavirus is Anil Subba, an Uber driver from Nepal who was in his 40s and developed symptoms of the virus after picking up a sick passenger.
- New York City has become something of an epicenter of the virus in the US, with more confirmed cases there than anywhere else in the country. The virus has also been spreading faster there than anywhere else.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
An Uber driver from Nepal who was in his 40s and lived in the New York City borough of Queens has reportedly died from the coronavirus after picking up a sick passenger.
What happened to Anil Subba, who left behind a wife and three children, is reflective of the insecurity and lack of benefits like health insurance that gig workers face — particularly those who drive for rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft. In Subba’s case, he picked up a rider at JFK airport in early March who turned out to be sick. He soon developed coronavirus symptoms and checked himself into the hospital some two weeks ago.

How to avoid coronavirus while ordering food for delivery
- Restaurants all around the United States are closed to customers due to the coronavirus pandemic.
- Many of those restaurants are offering pickup and delivery to survive, and while some people might be concerned about catching the coronavirus from their food, data suggests this is unlikely.
- If you want to be extra careful, there are steps you can take to make your food deliveries even safer.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Living in New York City, I order out far more often than I would in maybe any other city in the entire country. Over 200 restaurants will deliver food right to my front door, and so when the entire city shut down due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, I wanted to do my part to help support the establishments that I love in my neighborhood. But after reading reports about the virus living for hours or even days on certain surfaces, I was concerned that I might put myself at risk (and thus anyone else I come in contact with) by bringing food delivery into my apartment.
You can imagine my relief when I read the guide to coronavirus food safety on Serious Eats, which explains that of all the hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 cases to date, there is no evidence that the disease has ever spread through food or food packaging. But if you want to be extra careful, there are steps you can take.

Woman coughed on $35,000 worth of groceries to stoke coronavirus fears
- With the coronavirus pandemic encouraging new standards in personal hygiene, a woman in Pennsylvania deliberately coughed on $35,000 worth of food at a grocery store.
- The woman was apprehended and ultimately arrested by local police. It’s unclear if the woman has the coronavirus, but the store’s co-owner said he will do everything possible to get her tested.
- All of the food in question was promptly thrown into the trash.

A crisis like the coronavirus pandemic can sometimes bring out the best in people. Over the past few weeks, for example, we’ve seen a number of stories involving people going out of their way to monetarily help complete strangers pay their bills on time.
At the same time, a crisis like the coronavirus can also bring out the worst in people. While some folks are selfishly hoarding enough toilet paper to last for months on end, others are using the coronavirus as an opportunity to scam unsuspecting victims out of their hard-earned money.

New AI-powered blood test could reveal lung cancer without a CT scan
- A blood test that uses machine learning to hunt for cancer DNA could reveal lung cancer in patients who otherwise would never have been tested.
- The system is accurate in roughly two-thirds of patients, but that may be enough to save an additional 1,200 lives per year, according to the scientists who developed it.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
A team of scientists in the United States has developed a blood test that uses machine learning to hunt for the telltale signs of lung cancer. The system, which is still early in its development, could eventually replace CT scans as a first-line screening measure for suspected lung cancer patients.
The test hunts for tumor DNA that is circulating in a person’s blood, and is far less expensive than CT scans which are typically used to diagnose lung cancer. It’s not yet ready to be used on a widespread basis or relied upon in real-world settings, but the research is incredibly promising and could prove to be a powerful weapon against one of the deadliest types of cancer.

Use this calculator to estimate how big your coronavirus stimulus check will be
- The Trump administration is poised to start sending out emergency stimulus checks to Americans to counter the financial impact of the novel coronavirus that’s dramatically upended life in the country.
- Here’s a calculator so you can estimate the size of your check, which will generally be $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, though there are some exceptions.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Now that the US Senate has passed its version of a $2 trillion stimulus bill meant to provide some financial aid that blunts the catastrophic impact of the novel coronavirus, the federal government is poised to begin sending out emergency checks — or, in some cases, direct deposits — to help Americans whose incomes have been disrupted.
The virus has resulted in a slew of quarantines and stay-at-home orders around the country, such that millions of Americans are hunkering down at home right now and, if they can’t shift to a work-from-home arrangement, have either seen their income completely eliminated or at least reduced to some degree. The direct financial aid proposed by the Trump administration will help a little, providing $1,200 payments to adults (double that for couples) along with an extra $500 for every child under the age of 18. How much are you going to get, exactly? Use the calculator below to estimate your total, since there are income qualification tiers to be aware of.

Verizon and AT&T are waiving overage fees, but there’s a catch
- AT&T and Verizon will waive late fees and overage charges for the next 60 days.
- The move comes in response to the coronavirus’s ongoing impact on the U.S. economy.
- A record number of Americans applied for unemployment benefits this month.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
With the U.S. economy in dire shape and millions of people currently struggling to pay their bills, Verizon and AT&T recently announced that they will not charge subscribers overage fees for exceeding their monthly bandwidth allotment.
It’s a nice gesture, but the rub is that the overage fees will not be waived automatically. Rather, subscribers will have to contact Verizon and AT&T directly via the phone. We can only hope that there will be enough staff on-hand to accommodate what could very well be an avalanche of people calling in.

Microsoft says Xbox Series X unlikely to be delayed by coronavirus
- The Xbox Series X was originally scheduled to launch during the 2020 holiday season.
- Despite the novel coronavirus pandemic, Microsoft says that its supply chain is “back on rails” and that it doesn’t expect any of its new hardware, including the Xbox Series X, to be delayed.
- On the whole, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella thinks that the company is weathering the storm well.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As we all attempt to navigate a viral pandemic that has forced much of the world to shut down, it’s important to not let the doom and gloom overwhelm you. Everyone has different ways of coping with disaster, and for many of us, gaming is a helpful escape, as evidenced by the record-breaking sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which launched for the Switch last week. So, while it may not be a top priority, the potential delays of the next-gen consoles have been a topic of conversation for months, but Microsoft tried to put those fears to rest this week.
Speaking with CNBC on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the hardware supply chain is revving back up now that the novel coronavirus outbreak has been contained in much of Asia. When asked if the company would be able to deliver the products it had planned to release by the end of the year before COVID-19 became such a pressing concern, Nadella said this: “On the supply side we are getting back on rails.”

Plex offers free live TV through June 30th to make your coronavirus quarantine less boring
- The media server app Plex has joined a growing list of companies offering free goods and services to Americans hunkering down as the novel coronavirus continues to spread — and the pandemic leaves millions of Americans quarantined at home.
- Plex is offering free live TV for the next three months, through June 30. So while the coronavirus impact has been profound and far-reaching, at least this is one way to make your shelter-in-place compliance a bit more bearable.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The team at Plex, a media server app that’s become something of a favorite of cord-cutters, says they’ve heard from plenty of users of the past few weeks about how the service has been a key piece of users’ shelter-in-place regimen amid the growing spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
And in a newly published company blog post, Plex adds that it’s making something available so that users can find a little more enjoyment in the moments spent hunkering down at home because of coronavirus quarantines when they might otherwise be out enjoying the world: The service is offering free live TV through June 30. For the next three months, the company’s post announces, live TV will be free of charge without the requirement of a Plex Pass.
