A tube that did nothing but eat and poop is your oldest ancestor

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Researchers studying fossils from Australia have discovered what they believe is the oldest known ancestor of all animal life on Earth, including humans. Described as a “tiny, wormlike creature,” it was basically a fleshy little tube that did little more than eat and poop. For some of us, that description might hit a little too close to home.

The discovery, which is the subject of a new paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals some key details about the creature that we can all trace our ancestry to. The worm-ish organism has been named Ikaria wariootia, but what it lacks in a flashy name it makes up for by being, well, almost entirely unremarkable.

  • Coronavirus confirmed in an employee from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
  • NASA is trying to keep its various missions on schedule, recently stating that the Mars 2020 mission is still a go, at least for the moment.
  • The employee who tested positive for COVID-19 hadn’t been to the center for at least 10 days prior to testing positive for the virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus pandemic has affected every possible industry in one way or another, and the US space program is no different. NASA has shuttered a number of its centers, pushing staff to work from home and only allowing mission-critical personnel to access certain facilities. Now, just a day after the agency put out a release detailing its plans for the immediate future, Florida Today is reporting that an employee at the Kennedy Space Center has tested positive for the virus.

The employee was reportedly last present at the facility over 10 days prior to testing positive for the virus and had already been working from home under NASA’s mandate to do so. Still, it’s unclear if the individual was infected during his most recent days at the center.

These are the best credit cards for food delivery, since we’re all stuck at home right now

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The novel coronavirus outbreak that’s kept much of the US hunkered down at home to avoid catching (and triggering community spread of) the virus means many people are relying on food delivery services like UberEats and DoorDash and lot more than usual these days.
  • In this post, we recommend a few credit card offers for anyone who wants to maximize their rewards and get the best bang for their buck as they utilize these food delivery services more frequently.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

BGR has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. BGR and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Please note: the offers mentioned below are subject to change at any time and some may no longer be available.

One of the biggest adjustments that the novel coronavirus is causing to the average person’s daily life has to do with the quarantines and stay-at-home orders that an increasing number of cities around the US are now subject to — orders that are having a massive impact especially on local restaurant communities. The closure of non-essential businesses in tandem with these orders means that bars and restaurants have been forced to shutter, leaving them with only the option to offer takeout and delivery services until the pandemic is resolved. Meanwhile, many of the major food delivery services — including Seamless, DoorDash, Delivery.com and Caviar — have come out with new policies that offer low-risk (and no-contact) delivery options to protect both customers and workers. DoorDash, for example, sent users an email detailing new ways to request a delivery where customers can add a drop-off location and coordinate with their “Dasher” to eliminate person-to-person interactions.

Watch the opening scene of ‘The Office’ on its 15th anniversary

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Office, which the latest Nielsen numbers show is the most popular licensed series on Netflix right now, debuted on NBC 15 years ago today.
  • Thanks to the novel coronavirus and the quarantines and shutdown orders it’s spurred, the show is one of the Netflix series viewers are especially bingeing right now while we’re all hunkering down at home.
  • Watch the opening moments of the show, Episode 1 of which debuted on this date back in 2005, below.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Fifteen years ago today, the world was introduced for the first time to a loveable, bumbling, frequently-inappropriate regional manager of a paper supply company named Michael Scott who became a central character in NBC’s beloved, 9-season workplace comedy The Office.

It’s head-spinning to think how different the world was back then. The iPhone was still a few years away. No one really knew the name Barack Obama yet. Heck, we could still come and go as we please, pre-global pandemic. You can check out the first few moments of the show’s inaugural season below, but one reason this is an anniversary especially worth highlighting now has to do with the fact that millions of us are stuck at home right now thanks to the novel coronavirus, with little to do but work from home and find ways to keep ourselves entertained.

All of India is under complete coronavirus lockdown

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • India, the world’s second-most populous country after China, has gone into a complete lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Everything except for essential services, including health services and grocery stores, will be closed for a minimum of 21 days starting at midnight local time.
  • India reported its first coronavirus case in late January. Currently, there are over 500 people infected in the country, according to official statistics.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The total number of COVID-19 cases surpassed 400,000 worldwide on Tuesday, with the figure having doubled in just a week. The death toll has surpassed 17,000, and we’re probably going to see thousands of deaths in the coming weeks, as countries battle the horrific pandemic.

India, the world’s second-most populous country with more than 1.3 billion citizens, is going into a full lockdown, something that may seem unimaginable for such a massive region. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered the complete lockdown, which will last for at least 21 days.

Here’s how ‘Pokemon Go’ is adjusting to the coronavirus pandemic

  • Pokemon Go has received several major updates to make it easier to play without leaving home as many of us are stuck inside until the coronavirus pandemic is under control.
  • Some of the changes to Pokemon Go include extra XP, the ability to carry more gifts, and cheap bundles.
  • Be sure to check Pokemon Go every week for a new 1 PokeCoin bundle in the shop.

There are obviously more pressing concerns right now than catching Pokemon on our phones, but as we all settle into our new quarantine realities for the next several weeks or even months, any distraction is a welcome one. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to see how Pokemon Go developer Niantic is tweaking its game to account for the fact that no one is going outside and walking around for the foreseeable future.

Reports about Niantic “prioritizing updates to Pokemon Go features and experiences that can be enjoyed in individual settings” began popping up earlier this month, and on Monday, the developer revealed some of the changes that are being made to make the game easier to play from the comfort of your home.

Today’s coronavirus spike in the US doesn’t tell the whole story

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • March 24 coronavirus update: As of Tuesday morning, there have been more than 46,000 cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed in the US, along with almost 600 deaths.
  • And even though the World Health Organization thinks the US could soon become the epicenter of the pandemic, President Trump insisted on Monday that he wanted to reopen US businesses again soon.
  • Health experts warned about this tendency to reverse course too soon, and one reason why is because today’s numbers don’t reflect today’s reality.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

President Trump sent everyone’s head spinning at a news conference yesterday in which he insisted that he would press for businesses to reopen soon, the coronavirus-related quarantines and shutdowns to end, and the US economy to start getting back to normal. “Our country was not built to be shut down,” Trump said. “We are going to be opening up our country for business because our country was meant to be open.”

Not only does this fly in the face of pretty much universal warnings from health experts who stress that the deadly virus is nowhere close to having run its course in the US yet, but this is also exactly what many experts warned about during the early days of the fight against the virus — that it would be tempting to want to react to coronavirus-related shutdowns early, even though what you see today doesn’t reflect the conditions of today.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20+ looks stunning in these new renders

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The new Galaxy Note 20 lineup from Samsung is a few months away from release — with the handsets possibly coming as soon as this summer alongside the Galaxy Fold 2.
  • A Dutch tech news blog, working with an outside designer, has compiled a variety of leaks, specs, and rumors that have surfaced thus far about Samsung’s new Note 20+ to produce new color renders of the device.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Because Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 20 phablets will borrow a lot spec-wise from the new Galaxy S20 phones, noted leaker Ice Universe said on Twitter in recent days that we could almost think of the Note variant as the “Galaxy S20, Pen edition.”

That’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the fact remains: The Note 20 hardware specs won’t materially differ from those of the S20 series, Ice Universe added in a separate tweet, something that also holds true for the Note 20 cameras. Note enthusiasts, though, are a hardcore bunch and are no doubt plenty excited for the Note 20 series to arrive later this year (it’s being developed at Samsung under the code name “Project Canvas”) and it will include both a standard model and a Plus edition. And speaking of the latter, new renders have just surfaced courtesy of Dutch tech news blog LetsGoDigital (in partnership with designer Jermaine Smit, known online as Concept Creator).

‘Plague Inc.’ adds new mode that lets players try to stop a pandemic

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • On account of the coronavirus spreading across the globe, Ndemic Creations will update its popular Plague Inc. game with a brand new mode.
  • The new mode lets players stop a deadly virus from spreading. In the standard mode, players try and spread a virus across the world.
  • The coronavirus is still spreading aggressively throughout the world and has resulted in more than 18,000 deaths. Incidentally, the lockdown in Wuhan, China has come to an end.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A few weeks ago, the popular iPhone game Plague Inc. was booted from the App Store in China under mysterious circumstances. The game, if you’re not familiar with it, is effectively a simulation where users are challenged to create a deadly disease and spread it across the world as scientists and medical health professionals look to contain it. It admittedly sounds morbid at first glance, but the game is incredibly and surprisingly educational. The game is also immersive, addicting, and as a result, has won a number of awards over the years.

In light of the coronavirus, however, the Plague Inc. developers over at Ndemic Creations realized that having users actively try and spread a virus across the globe — when it’s actually happening in real life — may not sit well with everyone. As a result, the company today announced that it will be introducing a new game mode wherein users will be tasked with stopping an infectious disease as opposed to spreading it.

Coronavirus shutdowns across the US are saving 600,000 lives, data shows

  • Coronavirus has forced social distancing and shutdowns of schools and businesses, but these measures are saving hundreds of thousands of lives, researchers say.
  • Reversing course before treatment or vaccine research has matured could lead to an incredible spike in deaths as the healthcare system is overwhelmed by critically ill patients.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered the way many of us conduct our daily lives, but the seemingly drastic measures being taken across the United States are saving hundreds of thousands of lives. This, according to a new study by economists led by Martin Eichenbaum of Northwestern University, is more than enough reason to maintain and even expand the social distancing efforts and temporary shutdowns already in place across the country.

The news comes as questions regarding the length of the social distancing and business closures begin to mount. The US stock market is struggling, and President Trump appears poised to push the country back toward economic normalcy despite the looming health threat and potential for catastrophic death tolls.
