Google’s decision to ruin the Pixel 5 might have a good explanation
- Google’s Pixel 5, which is set to launch this fall, will not have the same high-end processor as the Galaxy S20 and other Android flagships, some rumors have said.
- The Pixel 5 won’t be the only new Android phone ditching the Snapdragon 865 for a cheaper alternative from Qualcomm.
- A new report speculates that the Snapdragon 865’s price and design particularities might make it unattractive to some smartphone vendors, including Google.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Google’s Pixel phones are meant to be iPhone equivalents for the Android universe; high-end handsets that are always the first to run the latest Android software. Google made that clear a few years ago when it replaced the Nexus line with the Pixel family. However, Google made a huge change to its policy last year when it launched the Pixel 3a — a mid-range device that wasn’t anything like the Pixel 3 in terms of flagship features.
The same thing will happen in the coming months when the Pixel 4a delivers a less impressive set of specifications than those of the Pixel 4 that was launched in October. But, more disturbingly, the Pixel 5 might be the first Pixel series not to sport the same kind of hardware as the other top Android flagships of the year. But thanks to a new report, we might at least know why this is the case.

Coronavirus pandemic forces SpaceX launch delay
- SpaceX, which has proven resilient in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, finally felt the impact after its planned launch of a SAOCOM satellite was delayed.
- The delay comes as Vandenberg Air Force Base is locking down and limiting operations, including rocket launches.
- The launch would have sent a Falcon 9 skyward to deliver a satellite into orbit, but it will now be rescheduled for a later date.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA has already had to deal with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in a number of ways. SpaceX, on the other hand, had remained largely unaffected by the outbreak, but you knew it couldn’t stay that way forever. Now, as TechCrunch reports, the company is facing its first coronavirus-related delay, with the planned launch of a SAOCOM satellite being pushed back indefinitely.
The delay comes as California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base, where the launch was supposed to take place, issues a lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections on the base right now, but the Air Force is taking a proactive approach here and hoping to keep it that way.

The US is about to be the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic
- The novel coronavirus outbreak is continuing to generate new confirmed cases at a fast clip in the US, which the World Health Organization estimates is on track to soon become the epicenter of the global pandemic.
- The WHO’s latest data shows that 85 percent of new coronavirus cases reported worldwide over the last 24 hours were from Europe and the US. Forty percent of that total was attributable to new US cases, where a growing number of states and cities are dealing with lockdowns, business shutdowns, and citizens ordered to stay at home as much as possible.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
You’d be forgiven for trying to keep up with the news related to the novel coronavirus outbreak around the US today and feeling a little confused about the state of things in the country.
On the one hand, the World Health Organization says the number of coronavirus cases stemming from the pandemic is multiplying to such a degree in the US that we’re about to become the new epicenter of the virus (thanks to a “very large acceleration,” per WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris). The outbreak here is not only very large, she told reporters today, but it “is increasing in intensity.” Meanwhile, President Trump is pressing to get the country’s business reopened and the economy coming back to life — as soon as by Easter, he said during a Fox town hall Tuesday, never mind the objections of the health care community.

This is when the first coronavirus drugs might actually be available
- Drugs and vaccines for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, are currently being tested and developed.
- While some of the drugs being tested already exist on the market, they need to be put through their paces before they can be used widely to treat COVID-19.
- A true coronavirus vaccine is almost certainly at least 18 months away from being made available.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
For the United States, the question is no longer whether or not it will take months for city- and state-wide shutdowns to end and our lives to go back to normal, but rather how many months it will take. Until we’re able to flatten the curve and ensure that our hospitals won’t be overwhelmed by an influx of sick patients who have been infected by the novel coronavirus, social distancing, shelter-in-place orders, and bans on large gatherings will be the norm. The only hope we have for expediting that process is the discovery of a drug that can treat COVID-19.
As it stands, there are no drugs or vaccines that have been approved to treat the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, no matter what the president claims. That said, treatments and medications are being tested and developed as I type this, and Matthew Harper of Stat News has offered up his forecast for when they might be ready.

Apple will start reopening its retail stores in early April
- Apple retail stores will re-open during the first half of April. The openings will be staggered and stores in areas where the coronavirus is still an active threat will likely remain closed.
- Though the coronavirus is still spreading in major metropolitan areas, Donald Trump earlier today said that he hopes stores will begin to open up by Easter, which falls on April 12 this year.
- Apple closed its retail stores on March 14, a move which was then followed by a number of other prominent retail chains, including Nike and Calvin Klein.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Apple plans to reopen its retail stores during the first of April, according to a new report from VentureBeat. Recall, coronavirus fears prompted Apple to close all of its retail stores outside of China about 10 days ago. Though Apple initially said all of its retail stores would reopen by March 27, the company subsequently indicated that stores would remain closed “until further notice.”
It remains unclear what prompted Apple to put a timeline on store reopenings, but it may have a little something to do with Donald Trump earlier today stating that he wants stores to open back up for business by Easter, which incidentally falls on April 12th.

Apple’s mythical AR glasses may launch as early as 2022
- Apple may release its long-rumored AR glasses as early as 2022.
- Apple has long considered augmented reality to be a next-gen feature, with Tim Cook noting it has the potential to be as much of a game-changer as the iPhone.
- Rumors of Apple releasing augmented reality-powered glasses have been making the rounds for years, though it remains unclear if the product will ever make it out of the development stage.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Remember a few years ago when the biggest Apple rumor centered around whether or not Apple was going to design its own HDTV? One day there’d be a report claiming that a branded Apple TV was just a year or two out and the next there’d be a report indicating that Apple abandoned the project entirely.
These days, a similar dynamic has emerged involving Apple’s mythical AR glasses project. Rumors of Apple releasing a pair of smart glasses have persisted for nearly four years at this point. The first rumor claimed that Apple would release AR glasses as early as 2018. Then that date shifted to 2020. Then we heard rumblings that the project was canceled altogether. And now comes word from Digitimes claims that Apple’s AR glasses could launch as early as 2022.

YouTube will reduce video quality globally for 30 days
- In response to the coronavirus pandemic, YouTube video streams will play in standard definition by default for a full month. HD video can be viewed if manually selected.
- Netflix recently announced plans to lower video stream quality in Australia and India for the next 30 days. The company is already reducing video quality across Europe.
- The coronavirus also prompted Amazon to lower the quality of its Prime Video streams in Europe.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
With more people staying at home and watching streaming content than ever before — thanks, of course to the coronavirus — sites like Netflix and YouTube recently lowered the quality of their streams in Europe in order to lessen the burden on Internet providers.
And now comes word that similar measures are being taken in the United States and across the world. In a move that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, YouTube today will start lowering the video quality for users across the globe. As such, videos by default will play in standard definition, though users will retain the option to switch over to HD if they so choose.

China’s coronavirus lockdown in Wuhan is finally coming to an end
- Coronavirus epicenter Wuhan, China, is slowly lifting restrictions related to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown.
- Citizens in the Hubei region will be allowed to travel once again, though only if they have been cleared as healthy and given a QR code confirming their health status.
- Residents of Wuhan, Hubei’s capital, can resume travel starting on April 8th, though it will still be a long time before lockdown measures are lifted entirely.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
China’s Wuhan region, once ground zero of the coronavirus pandemic, is slowly inching toward normalcy. Chinese officials have revealed their plans to begin to lift the strict lockdown the region’s residents have endured for months. New cases of the virus have been absent for nearly a week now, and that has offered health officials a sense of optimism that the worst of the pandemic is behind them.
Still, it won’t be an immediate return to business-as-usual in Wuhan, and there are still some rather strict measures in place to ensure that only healthy individuals are traveling. That means verifying that those who are out and about are healthy and ensuring that those still sick remain home or under medical supervision until they are well.

Coronavirus vaccine might be ready for healthcare workers this fall
- Coronavirus vaccine developer Moderna said the mRNA-1273 drug that’s currently in the clinical trials phase might be ready to be deployed as soon as this fall.
- The first beneficiaries could be healthcare workers and other professionals in the medical field.
- A vaccine that could prevent the general public from contracting COVID-19 disease will not be available for up to 18 months.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
COVID-19 has no cure right now, and that’s why the strict social distancing measures are so critical. Combined with proper hand-washing and improved hygiene, the quarantine will buy scientists precious time to come up with therapies that can kill the novel coronavirus and increase the speed of recovery for infected patients. Others will continue to advance the various vaccine programs that are underway, which is the only type of cure that can prevent future coronavirus reinfections and outbreaks. Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) is conducting a massive trial, testing four separate drugs that have shown promising results against the virus in more limited tests. The WHO is also collaborating with scientists on at least 20 vaccines, of which one is already in testing in the US. That very same vaccine might be deployed as soon as this fall, although only healthcare workers and certain other professionals might get it.

Video of Italian mayors scolding people for breaking quarantine is the greatest thing you’ll see today
- Italy remains the country hit hardest by the coronavirus, with the country having recorded upwards of 6,000 coronavirus-related deaths so far.
- Italy, the world’s 8th largest economy, instituted a nationwide lockdown to prevent the coronavirus from spreading. The entire country, save for non-essential employees, now remains under quarantine.
- A hilarious video compilation showcasing Italian Mayors dramatically scolding citizens who break quarantine has emerged.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If there’s a silver lining to the fact that millions of people are currently stuck at home for what might possibly weeks on end, it’s that memes — coronavirus-related and otherwise — have absolutely been on fire lately. Coupled with some of the creative projects I’ve seen people post on Twitter and Facebook over the past few days, it’s clear that the lockdown is fueling creativity in a very cool way.
There’s an old adage that says, truth is stranger than fiction. What’s also true is that sometimes the truth is funnier than fiction. So for as hilarious as all the online content has been recently, you’d be hard-pressed to find something funnier than this compilation of Italian Mayors lashing out at their constituents for violating quarantine. Now you might be forgiven for thinking this is fake — it’s just that funny — but rest assured that it’s 100% authentic.
