Seth Rogen live-tweeting ‘Cats’ is the comic relief we need right now

  • Actor Seth Rogen recently decided to sit down and watch the disastrous December 2019 movie Cats, a live-action adaptation of the Broadway classic starring well-known actors like Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, and Ian McKellen.
  • To make the experience a bit more fun, Rogen decided to do so while stoned, and he also live-tweeted the experience for good measure.

It’s a pretty sure bet that all of us could use some relief from the news at the moment, with all the frantic and quite frankly terrifying updates about the COVID-19 coronavirus. The number of cases keeps rising, hospitals are starting to reach the breaking point in some parts of the country, and the crisis just grinds on and on.

Comic relief is sorely needed right now, something that’s, unfortunately, a little hard to come by. Pretty much the entirety of Hollywood has shut down because of the virus, which means no new movies are being made right now nor any new TV shows, either. Which is why, into the breach, stepped Seth Rogen, who took it upon himself to conquer a most daunting challenge: To actually sit down and watch December’s utter bomb of a movie, the universally panned Cats.

  • GOG.com is giving away 27 PC games completely free of charge. All you need is an account.
  • Many of the free games are more than twenty years old, but beggars can’t be choosers.
  • GOG also happens to be running a spring sale on thousands of games right now.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As the entire world shuts down around us in response to the coronavirus outbreak, people are increasingly turning to video games to cope with their new situations. In fact, this past weekend, the PC gaming platform Steam hit a new all-time record for concurrent users, as more than 20 million gamers logged on to play games. Later this week, two of the most anticipated games of 2020 — Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal — will be widely available as well. The only problem is that many of us don’t have money to spend on games right now.

Lucky for us, GOG.com — a digital distribution platform for PC games — has collected all of the games on its service that can be downloaded free of charge and put them all in a single place. “Stay at home and play some games,” the header of the page appropriately reads, clearly referencing our current situation.

France cautiously exploring coronavirus treatment based on anti-malaria drug

  • French pharmaceutical company Sanofi said it’s ready to assist the government with millions of doses of a drug that could help treat 300,000 coronavirus patients.
  • Test with anti-malaria Plaquenil showed that the COVID-19 virus disappeared after six days in 75% of patients in a limited study.
  • The government said the results were promising, but they need to be validated by more extended, independent trials before going forward.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Staying home and washing our hands are two simple things we all can do to give hospitals the time they need to treat severe coronavirus cases and authorities the time they need to procure critical medical supplies (ventilators and COVID-19 test kits) and come up with measures that will prop up the economy when this is over.

At the same time, researchers need time to study the virus closely, to understand how it works and how it can be defeated. Doctors in Australia have published a study that shows how the immune system kills the infections, while several laboratories around the world are working on vaccines. On top of that, doctors are experimenting with all sorts of drugs that could speed up the recovery of patients. One of them is a flu medication from Japan called favipiravir (Avigan), which showed promise in China. Another even more surprising potential COVID-19 treatment is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), which France is currently considering for future trials.

NASA just told its entire staff to work from home

  • NASA just elevated all of its centers to Stage 3, meaning a mandatory work-from-home order for almost all of its staff.
  • Staff considered to be mission-critical will still be allowed to access NASA facilities, but the majority will have to make do from home.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA has made the decision to send all of its staff in centers across the country home amid the coronavirus pandemic. The decision comes in the wake of multiple NASA facilities being forced into mandatory work-from-home status after staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

It was roughly a week ago that NASA had to close its Ames Research Center to most employees after one tested positive for the virus. Then, earlier this week, a second NASA employee tested positive, this time at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. At the time NASA elevated all of its locations to “Stage 2,” which pushed staff to work from home if possible. Now, the agency has elevated its efforts and moved all centers to “Stage 3,” which is a mandatory work-from-home order.

A look at how the coronavirus is impacting internet speeds across the globe

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus has resulted in an unprecedented number of individuals staying at home during the day and using the web.
  • In light of this, there’s well-founded concern that some internet providers aren’t up to the task of handling an upsurge in internet usage, particularly given how popular video streaming is.
  • Speedtest.net, as a result, has been keeping an eye on global internet performance across a number of geographic regions.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus still spreading across all corners of the globe, much of the world is in full-on lockdown mode. In the United States, for example, major metropolitan areas like New York City and Chicago have ordered restaurants and bars to shut down entirely. Meanwhile, a variety of other public establishments — from movie theaters and gyms to Apple retail stores — closed for business a few days ago.

This, coupled with the fact that many employers are letting employees work from home when possible, has resulted in a somewhat precedented scenario where the number of people staying home and going online — either to work or to stream a variety of media content — is perhaps higher than it’s ever been at any other time in history

To this point, The New York Times notes:

As millions of people across the United States shift to working and learning from home this week to limit the spread of the coronavirus, they will test internet networks with one of the biggest mass behavior changes that the nation has experienced.

That is set to strain the internet’s underlying infrastructure, with the burden likely to be particularly felt in two areas: the home networks that people have set up in their residences, and the home internet services from Comcast, Charter and Verizon that those home networks rely on.

New Best Buy policy will limit in-store customers to 15 at a time

  • Best Buy has announced some new policies meant to cut down on crowds at its stores as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
  • The electronics chain is cutting the hours it’s open, and it’s also going to limit the number of customers inside at any given time to between 10 and 15.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Last night, as I was driving to a grocery store nearby to stock up on some essentials that I’m definitely not hoarding, I couldn’t help but notice the parking lot at the Best Buy that’s in the same shopping complex as the store. It was — well, it wasn’t full, but you certainly could be forgiven for assuming it was a normal day and that there wasn’t, you know, a global pandemic going on at the moment. The lot looked about as full as it does on a normal day, which certainly surprised me, though I guess it shouldn’t have. People will stop at nothing to take advantage of deals, though that’s going to come to an end and pretty quick.

Because all of you clowns are crowding its stores instead of practicing the social distancing guidelines recommended by health experts — to keep us all from getting sick — Best Buy is preparing to implement a new policy at its stores, starting on Monday. For the time being, the store will only allow 10 to 15 customers inside at a time.

Tesla’s California factory shuts down amid coronavirus concerns

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Tesla’s Fremont factory can no longer manufacture cars after it was deemed to be a non-essential business by Alameda County.
  • Tesla’s share price dropped by more than 10% on the news. Tesla is now trading below $400 a share, effectively wiping out the bulk of the gains the stock enjoyed over the previous few weeks.
  • As the coronavirus continues to spread, Tesla CEO Elon Musk this week reiterated his belief that the panic surrounding the coronavirus is worse than the virus itself.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Over the past few months, Tesla shares embarked on a meteoric and somewhat unprecedented rise. Consider this: Tesla shares in late November were trading at $328 a share. Not even three months later, Tesla stock price hit $917 on February 19th. Now, just about one month later, the bulk of Tesla’s gains have all but vanished due to concerns surrounding the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Today, Tesla shares are trading in the $380 range, with the stock falling by more than 10% after Tesla’s factory in Fremont was deemed to be a non-essential business. While it was initially assumed that Tesla could keep vehicle production going, that is no longer the case. Incidentally, the Tesla factory shutting down comes just about one week after Tesla manufactured its one-millionth car, a milestone Elon Musk celebrated on Twitter last Tuesday.

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake just rocked Utah

  • The state of Utah was just struck with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake near the Salt Lake City area.
  • The quake was the strongest in the state since 1992, knocking out power to nearly 50,000 people.
  • Emergency management officials warned city residents that aftershocks are likely and to avoid the downtown Salt Lake City area.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Salt Lake City area got a rude awakening this morning when a 5.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the region. The event resulted in the loss of power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses and prompted Salk Lake International Airport to send inbound flights elsewhere as staff inspected runways to ensure they were safe to land on.

The last time Utah endured such an earthquake was way back in 1992. That year, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the state, though not in the Salt Lake area. It’s unclear if the earthquake produced any injuries, but we’ll have to wait and see if new reports come in.

Here’s why coronavirus tests sometimes come back positive again after recovery

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Some of the recovered coronavirus patients from China, Italy, Japan, and South Korea tested positive after being discharged.
  • Doctors don’t believe this is a sign of reinfection, as the immune system can beat the COVID-19 disease.
  • There may be various reasons why testing turns positive after recovery.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus pandemic is still wreaking havoc in many countries where authorities have finally realized that harsher measures are needed to reduce the number of active COVID-19 cases so that local medical health systems aren’t overwhelmed. The world now has over 201,000 confirmed cases, with the highly-infectious disease taking the lives of over 8,000 patients. These are the numbers you usually hear about in reports, but there’s one other figure that deserves just as much attention, and that’s the number of recovered cases.

More than 82,000 people, most of them from China, have been declared virus-free, and they can help researchers come up with vaccines and treatments that could help with more severe cases. However, some of the patients who were discharged from the hospital later tested positive for the virus, puzzling doctors who are attempting to fight the disease. It appears, however, there may be several explanations for why a person might retest positive for the virus, so you shouldn’t panic if it happens to you.
