Google’s coronavirus website delayed until later this week
- Google’s coronavirus website is still offline, as the company has delayed the launch to later this week.
- The website will display updated information about the COVID-19 pandemic from the WHO and CDC.
- Screening and testing details will also be available on the website and other Google services once it launches.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Google found out during President Trump’s coronavirus national emergency press conference on Friday that it was supposedly building a coronavirus website that it would assist people with information about COVID-19 testing locations. The Search giant had to explain at the time that it was Verily, a service also owned by Google-parent company Alphabet, that was working on the coronavirus screening service, but the site would not be the kind of nationwide effort that Trump advertised. Google over the weekend announced that it was going to work on the promised site, and Verily on Monday started taking screening registrations in the Bay Area. Since then, Google decided to delay the release of the coronavirus website for further improvements.

These stark images show how profoundly the coronavirus has changed life in the US
- The US is still coming to grips with how to react to the inexorable spread of the coronavirus, which has now resulted in some cities around the country imposing strict lockdowns. Confirmed cases of infection globally, meanwhile, have now surpassed 181,500, and that number is continuing to rise — both around the world and in the US.
- Shops are closing for indefinite periods, as are sports arenas, beaches, landmarks, and so many more public places as Americans practice social distancing and grapple with a new virus that none of us fully understand and all of us fear.
- The images below paint a stark portrait of how profoundly the coronavirus has comprehensively altered life in the US in a matter of days.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Keeping up with the news that seems to change by the minute regarding the spread of the coronavirus, and its pervasive and potentially deadly effects, has become something of a daunting challenge. Just today, Canada shut its border. US political leaders have started debating the feasibility of some kind of national lockdown. The number of confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection has surpassed 181,500 globally, and even a prominent Fox News on-air personality who was as of this past weekend still downplaying the virus has since reversed course. Meanwhile, officials are slowly ramping up the availability of tests for the virus, which will help cases and infected people be tracked — a very good thing, since as the World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today, “You cannot fight a fire blindfolded.”

LEGO bricks last just about forever in the ocean, and that’s bad news
- LEGO bricks have the potential to last for up to 1,300 years if they end up in Earth’s oceans.
- The plastic toys are incredibly durable, but that makes them an absolute nightmare when it comes to ocean pollution.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
LEGO bricks last for centuries if discarded into the ocean, contaminating the environment for generations upon generations of sea life. That’s according to a new study led by researchers at the University of Plymouth and published in the journal Environmental Pollution. The chunky, colorful plastic blocks wash ashore on beaches regularly, and now science tells us how long they can survive in Earth’s oceans.
According to the researchers, and based on the study of LEGO bricks that have already spent years in the ocean before ending up on beaches, the toys could last up to 1,300 years before fully breaking down.

This free software lets you fight coronavirus without lifting a finger
- The team behind the Folding@Home software is joining researchers to help fight the coronavirus.
- You can participate by downloading the free software and letting it run in the background while you’re doing other things on your computer or while your computer is idling.
- If you need that computing power to perform a task, simply turn Folding@Home off.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Although not everyone is in the same boat (at least not yet, anyway), chances are that you’re stuck at home for the foreseeable future. You might feel helpless, wondering what you can do to help other than sit on your couch and try not to become infected or infect anyone else. Well, if you have a computer at your disposal, there is a way that you can assist in the fight against the coronavirus by simply downloading a free program.
Back on February 27th, the team behind the Folding@Home project announced that it would join with researchers in an attempt to learn more about the novel coronavirus and help develop therapies that could save lives. If you’ve never heard of Folding@Home before, it is described as “a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics.” All you have to do to contribute is download the software, turn it on, and leave it running in the background.

This is the new Xbox Wireless Controller for the Xbox Series X
- Microsoft made another surprise Xbox Series X announcement, revealing the full specs of the new console as well as more details about the new Xbox controller that will be bundled with it.

- The Wireless Controller will also connect to a range of devices, not just the new Xbox, and it’ll feature lower latency, as well as fast USB-C battery charging support.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Microsoft on Monday made another surprise Xbox announcement, the third one since the big reveal last year. It started in mid-December with the Series X name and design reveal. About a month ago, Microsoft detailed the console’s main specs and features, without going into too many hardware specifics.
The company’s new announcements provide those specifics, including the storage information we craved, as well as the first demos of the console. The company also revealed more information on the new Xbox controller. The device has been slightly redesigned and supports additional features. Like the PlayStation 5’s controller, the Xbox controller can be charged via USB-C. But there seems to be at least one DualShock 5 feature Xbox won’t match.

Another NASA employee has COVID-19, forcing work-from-home order
- A NASA employee in Alabama tested positive for COVID-19, prompting a lockdown and mandatory work-from-home order.
- All other NASA facilities are now encouraging staff to work from home.
- Mission-essential work now takes a back seat to safety.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It was just last week that NASA was forced to lock down its Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley after an employee at the center tested positive for COVID-19. The space agency sent staff home, elevating the center to “Stage 3,” which is NASA’s label for a mandatory work-from-home order.
Now, with the virus continuing to spread across the country, another major NASA location has been hit with the “Stage 3” mandate. This time it’s the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. All employees of the facility will be forced to work from home and staff will have “restricted access to the center until further notice,” according to a NASA press release.

iOS 14 leak reveals a new iPhone 9 model we weren’t expecting
- iOS 14 leaks, at this point, have already revealed a ton of fresh insight about Apple’s product and software roadmap for the rest of 2020.
- The tech blog 9to5Mac has also found, based on a look at an early iOS 14 build, that Apple is also apparently working on a larger version of the iPhone 9, which we’ll call the iPhone 9 Plus for now even though the name hasn’t been confirmed yet.
- The phone, which along with the iPhone 9 would replace the iPhone 8 models, is expected to be released sometime this spring.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
A slew of leaks related to the next generation of Apple’s iOS software has produced a pretty comprehensive look at this point at the iPhone maker’s hardware and software roadmap for the rest of 2020, including everything from myriad HomeKit improvements to new iOS gestures as well as the possible addition of blood oxygen level tracking to the Apple Watch soon.
Meanwhile, an analysis of an early iOS 14 build has revealed the existence of an iPhone 9 Plus model, which would be in addition to the iPhone 9 we already expected and which confirms rumors that had already been circulating in support of a larger variant of the 4.7-inch entry-level iPhone 9. The expectation is that the name of this larger handset will carry “Plus” in the branding, and that it will run on the A13 Bionic chip — the same used in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

This brilliant iPhone trick might help you fight the coronavirus infection
- The COVID-19 infection lacks unique symptoms. Fever, coughing, and shortness of breath might apply to the flu and other medical conditions as well.
- But body temperature can and should be measured with regularity during the outbreak, especially if you’ve come in contact with a confirmed coronavirus case.
- The Health app can help you log fever readings with high accuracy, and there’s a trick to make it even more comfortable to use.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It may have seemed like a China-only problem a month ago, but the coronavirus threat feels more real than ever to the rest of us now. The virus’s ability to kill its host isn’t the scariest thing about COVID-19. Many of us will get it in the coming weeks and months, but most of us might not even notice it. What’s scary is the virus’s ability to move freely in a community with great speed. A young, healthy, coronavirus-positive person could infect many others, putting the elderly and those people who suffer from pre-existing conditions at risk. That’s who the virus kills, and that’s why social distancing and proper hygiene are of utmost importance right now.
That’s because this nasty virus doesn’t develop easily-identifiable symptoms to make diagnosis simply. Only a test result will confirm that your sudden cough, fever, and shortness of breath are signs of a COVID-19 infection. Considering those symptoms, there’s one other thing you should consider doing while you’re isolating yourself from other people which could prove to be incredibly handy for treating a future infection and preventing additional outbreaks that may occur in the coming months. And all you need to do it is your iPhone, as well as a clever trick that makes it at all a breeze.

‘The Matrix 4’ filming shuts down due to coronavirus pandemic
- The Matrix 4 filming has been suspended indefinitely as a result of the continued spread of the coronavirus.
- Filming had been set to continue this week in Berlin, Germany, where the film production had relocated from San Francisco, but Warner Bros. decided to err on the side of caution and press pause for the time being. It’s not known at this point whether the pause will impact the Matrix 4 2021 release date.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
We may have to wait a little longer to return to the Matrix.
Per Warner Bros.’ orders, production on The Matrix 4 — the long-awaited sequel to the original Matrix trilogy — is being brought to a halt as the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage the globe. Shooting had moved in recent days to Berlin, Germany, from San Francisco, where members of the public captured and shared via social media scores of scenes and special effects as well as posed for selfies with lead actor Keanu Reeves. And while the movie is set to be released in 2021, it’s not clear at the moment whether or not this interruption will impact the release timetable.
