- There are a few things you can get to help pass the time a bit quicker at home, and we’ve rounded up five key purchases you should consider.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There’s no end in sight as the novel coronavirus continues to spread across the United States, and now it’s up to every single one of us to do our part. When we have to go out for whatever reason, doing your part means keeping your distance from others, limited social interaction, and thoroughly washing your hands as often as possible. But the most important thing when it comes to doing your part is staying home as much as you can. Remember, it’s not just about preventing yourself from getting sick, it’s about preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus so that the elderly and at-risk don’t get sick.
We’ve already gone over the essentials you need to stock up on while you still can, and that’s important. But there’s another aspect of limiting your time outside that also needs to be considered: what the heck do you do the whole time you’re home? Here, we’ve made a few suggestions that should help keep you and your family busy while you’re doing your duty and staying indoors.
Get a tablet
Everyone is going to be spending a lot of time staring at screens in the coming weeks and months, and it’s always nice to have your own. Watching movies together as a family on the big screen is obviously important, but you’ll spend much more time away from the pack than you will together. Amazon has brand new current-generation 10.2-inch iPads on sale right now starting at $279, and that’s a fantastic deal.
New Apple iPad (10.2-Inch, Wi-Fi, 32GB) – Space Gray (Latest Model): $279.00
If you don’t want to spend quite that much, definitely go with a Fire Tablet from Amazon. The most affordable option is the Fire 7 Tablet at just $49.99, the Fire HD 8 is $79.99 or you can get two for $109.98 thanks to a great Amazon deal, and the high-end Fire HD 10 is $129.99.
Fire 7 Tablet (7″ display, 16 GB) – Black: $49.99
Fire HD 8 Tablet (8″ HD Display, 16 GB) – Black: $79.99 or save $50 on two
All-New Fire HD 10 Tablet (10.1″ 1080p full HD display, 32 GB) – Black: $149.99
Get a pair of headphones
It might be fun to blast music in your room or turn the TV up loud, but remember that there are going to be other people in your home trying to do their own thing. A good pair of headphones is a must-have, and there are plenty of solid options on Amazon. All of Apple’s AirPods are discounted right now including AirPods Pro at an all-time low price, and you’ll find a few other good options right here:
Apple AirPods Deals On Amazon: $119.00 – $234.98

Get some board games
The two recommendations above are all about spending time apart to keep from getting tired of each other, but you’ll obviously also want to spend plenty of time together with your family. There’s no better way to do that than with some fun new board games, and you’ll find plenty of good ones on sale right now on Amazon. Pandemic happens to be the best-seller at the moment for obvious reasons, but there are plenty of other options.
Best-Selling Board Games On Amazon: $7.88+
Get an Instant Pot
If you stocked up on non-perishables like you should have, you probably have tons of canned beans and other stuff to get through. Instead of chocking it down, cook some delicious recipes with a new Instant Pot. The #1 best-selling Instant Pot Duo 60 is on sale for $79 instead of $100, and there are some other good deals on Amazon as well. Get a streaming media player

This way, you can watch together as a family or everyone can go do their own thing. The Roku Premiere with 4K resolution and HDR is only $39, the upgraded 2019 Roku Streaming Stick+ is down to its lowest price since Black Friday, and you can get a Fire TV Stick starting at $40.

One of the best Google Maps features just got even better
- One of Google Maps’ best features has received a new update that will let users access it faster than ever.
- Announced a few weeks ago, the feature concerns Live View, a Google Maps navigation for walking that uses real-time imagery for the camera to direct users to the desired destination.
- The new feature is now in testing and can be accessed right from the main screen of Google Maps.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Google Maps has many handy features to enhance your navigation experience, and some of them can be helpful during the current coronavirus crisis. The app will allow business owners to update the information that shows up in Maps as frequently as needed, and it’ll help you order food online to avoid getting out of the house, assuming those restaurants will continue to operate during the weeks ahead. By the way, the app also has a nice feature that lets you locate only restaurants that fit your preferences. Google is now updating Maps to improve one of the latest and most exciting features it developed for Maps. However, the feature might not come in handy during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it requires going out of the house.

Apple fined 1.1 billion euros in France for anti-competitive behavior
- Apple was just fined 1.1 billion euros by France’s antitrust body for what has been deemed anti-competitive behavior.
- The fine is related to Apple’s practices within its distribution network.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Like any other massive technology company, Apple has received its share of scrutiny over the years by antitrust bodies claiming the consumer electronics giant engages in anti-competitive behavior. On Monday, Apple was slapped with a massive fine of 1.1 billion euros, or roughly $1.23 billion. The fine comes from France’s L’Autorité de la concurrence, which alleges that Apple engaged in three main anti-competitive practices along with two of its wholesale partners that intentionally prevented competition in the marketplace. “Apple and its two wholesalers have agreed not to compete with each other and to prevent distributors from competing with each other, thereby sterilizing the wholesale market for Apple products,” the French authority said.

Google’s coronavirus screening website is live, but it’s not the resource you want
- Google sister site Verily opened a limited COVID-19 screening site that lets people in two Bay Area counties register for testing.
- Verily’s screening and testing site doesn’t seem to be the nationwide resource President Trump promised from Google, and which Google then said it was developing.
- Certain conditions apply, and not everyone registering for a free test will qualify, with patients who are already showing coronavirus symptoms being advise to seek medical care.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of the measures that President Trump announced on Friday when he declared the coronavirus national emergency was a website that Google was supposedly developing to facilitate the access to coronavirus testing. Google had 1,700 engineers working on the project, he said. But it turned out that Google didn’t really know it was making such a website. Instead, Google-sister company confirmed that a more limited site was in the works and that it wasn’t the nationwide project Trump referred to. Since Friday Google confirmed it’s working with the US government on a nationwide site, stopping short from revealing any specific details about it. Verily, meanwhile, launched its coronavirus screening site, proving this isn’t the COVID-19 website you expect.

The Amex Platinum is the perfect credit card in almost any scenario, including emergencies
- Emergencies, preparedness, uncertainty and the like are what’s on everybody’s mind right now thanks to the relentless spread and effects of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
- As all of us practice more social distancing and even quarantining, it might be increasingly less practical to visit a bank or ATM to withdraw cash. We recommend keeping The Platinum Card® from American Express handy — and to sign up for the card if you haven’t already and you’re looking for a new piece of plastic.
- This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the Amex Platinum.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When you’re on the hunt for a credit card that comes with generous rewards and perks, it might be tempting to zero in on cards that offer big five- and six-digit welcome bonuses right up front. Indeed, for many consumers, it might be super-enticing to see a card like The Platinum Card® from American Express with its welcome offer of 60,000 points (after using the card to spend $5,000 in your first three months) and pretty quickly think about signing up.
In actual fact, though, the Amex Platinum also offers a ton of other reasons to think about signing up for this premium card, perks for which you’ll pay a $550 annual fee but which mount up quickly. Such that they more than offset the fee and give travelers, as well as anyone who wants a card that lavishes them with luxe benefits, plenty of opportunities to enjoy the finer things in life. But this isn’t merely the card to help you enjoy VIP-level benefits — In our opinion, this is an excellent card to keep on hand for emergencies and in lieu of cash, something that’s especially relevant thanks to the spread of the coronavirus right now.

Coronavirus panic-buying even hits Amazon hard, where many essentials are out of stock
- Coronavirus panic has sent consumers racing to find and stock up on household essentials to prepare for the virus, like Purell and toilet paper — items that have been all but stripped from the shelves of most major physical retail locations at the moment.
- Even Amazon, the so-called Everything Store, has not been immune to the effect of consumer panic-buying. Many items that consumers are currently desperate to find right now are listed as out-of-stock.
- The retailer penned a blog post on Sunday to address what it’s doing to meet this challenge, at a time when the US is continuing to ratchet up its response to the coronavirus that’s now a global pandemic.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The COVID-19 coronavirus has, at least temporarily, succeeded in doing something unprecedented to one US company otherwise thought to be all but unstoppable: It’s turned Amazon from the so-called Everything Store into the Everything You’re Desperately Trying to Find Right Now is Out of Stock Store.
The Internet retail giant on Sunday acknowledged via a company blog post what many of you are no doubt discovering on your own right now, that products ranging from Purell hand sanitizer to digital thermometers are either scarce, on backorder, or listed as out of stock right now. At a time when panicked buyers have stripped essentials like those and others from brick-and-mortar retail store shelves, leading to widespread unavailability of household staples like toilet paper, hand soap, sanitizer, and other essentials — and causing many people to turn (unsuccessfully) to Amazon as a last-resort source for those goods.

NASA fixed its Mars mole problem in the most unusual way
- NASA’s InSight lander might have finally fixed its mole problem.
- A new strategy to push the mole probe into the surface appears to be working, NASA teased in a tweet.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA’s InSight lander has performed a lot of great work since its arrival on the Red Planet many months ago. It’s provided scientists with insights (no pun intended) into the planet, revealing that marsquakes frequently rumble across its rocky surface, and even sent back timely weather reports. Just about everything is going well for the high-tech robot. Just about.
The one instrument that has seriously failed to meet expectations is the self-hammering “mole” tool that was supposed to dig itself up to 16 deep. Its first attempts were lackluster, and even when NASA tried new techniques, Mars barfed the probe back up again. Now, NASA is pulling out all the stops, and its newest plan appears to be working.

Google says it’s building Trump’s coronavirus website it didn’t know it was building
- Google this weekend announced that it’s working with the US government on a nationwide COVID-19 coronavirus information website.
- The company was caught off-guard by Trump’s revelation during Friday’s national emergency announcement that Google was developing such a website.
- Google said at the time that the only website in development was actually made by Verily, and it wasn’t supposed to be a service available nationwide. Now, however, Google says it is indeed building a site like the one Trump described.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
President Donald Trump said on Friday that Google was working on a new coronavirus screening site part of the administration’s measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic in the US. The revelation that some 1,700 Google engineers were developing the site came after Trump declared the novel coronavirus a national emergency. Google was caught off-guard at the time, and reports that followed revealed that Google wasn’t working on any sort of site and was surprised to see Trump’s detail anything like it. Trump’s claim seemed to be partly true, as Alphabet sister company Verily was indeed working on a triage tool for COVID-19 testing, but the site was in the early stages of development. It wasn’t supposed to be a nationwide tool for COVID-19 testing, either.

The smallest dinosaur ever was found encased in amber
- Scientists say they’ve found the tiniest dinosaur ever, and it was encased in amber.
- The fossil, found in Myanmar, is so small that it’s comparable to the smallest bird species alive today.
- The researchers believe that despite its size, it was a carnivore that feasted primarily on bugs.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
A tiny chunk of fossilized tree sap holds the tiniest dinosaur ever discovered, according to a team of researchers. As BBC News reports, the fossilized sap, called amber, was found in Myanmar and holds what looks a bit like a tiny bird skull. Dating back some 99 million years, the ancient remains are from the Cretaceous period, and offer us a window into the past we rarely enjoy.
The discovery, which is the subject of a new research paper published in the journal Nature, doesn’t include a full skeleton, but scientists can estimate the size of the dinosaur based on its skull alone. They believe it may have been as small as the tiniest species of bird alive today.
