President Trump announces national emergency over coronavirus
- President Trump declares state of emergency and the signing of the Stafford Act over coronavirus pandemic.
- This move frees up billions of dollars for disaster relief and mobilizes FEMA to the hardest-hit areas.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
President Donald Trump has announced a nationwide state of emergency due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking from the White House, Trump held a press event this afternoon to make the announcement. The decision to declare a nationwide emergency comes in the wake of new coronavirus cases popping up across the country on a daily basis, despite a shortage of testing.
The US government has come under increasing scrutiny over its response to the pandemic. Tests used to confirm the infection in patients have been hard to come by, with many doctors sounding their displeasure at the lack of supplies.

Amazon’s popular Echo Show 5 is $30 off right now if you get a refurb
- Amazon’s line of Echo products has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and the Echo Show 5 is one of the company’s best-selling new Echo products.
- The Echo Dot and other Alexa smart speakers are great, but the Echo Show 5 adds a whole new dimension to the experience by adding a beautiful LCD display.
- People love the Echo Show 5 so much that it became a best-seller when it was discounted during Black Friday and Cyber Week — and right now it’s back down to the same price if you buy a renewed model.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Amazon offers three different Echo Show devices and all three of them are fantastic. The original Echo Show has a huge display making it great for so many different things, but it’s also very pricey at $230. The mid-size Echo Show 8 is a bit more affordable at $130, and it has an 8-inch screen which is nice and big despite its compact form factor. Our favorite is the smallest model though, the Echo Show 5 that doesn’t take up much counter space at all.
The $90 Echo Show 5 Compact Smart Display with Alexa packs all the same great features as the other two models, including all the integrations with other Alexa-enabled devices. For example, if you have a Ring Video Doorbell, you can tell Alexa to show you who’s at the front door and the Echo Show 5 will oblige. That’s just one of millions of examples — the possibilities are endless.
While there’s no question that $90 is already a great price for this device, but you won’t pay anywhere near that much if you get one right now on Amazon. Certified Refurbished Echo Show 5 models are on sale right now for just $59.00, which matches Black Friday’s all-time low. Amazon’s certified refurbs are guaranteed to look and function like new or you can return it, so you have nothing at all to lose.
Here are the highlights from Amazon’s description:
Connect with your favorite people: Make hands-free video calls to the Alexa app or another Echo device with a screen. Instantly connect to other supported devices in your home, or make a voice announcement to every room with a supported Echo device.
More ways to control your privacy: Alexa and Echo devices are built with multiple layers of privacy. For example, your voice is streamed to the cloud only after your device detects the wake word (“Alexa”). You can also turn the microphone and camera off with a press of a button. And the built-in shutter lets you easily cover the camera.
Make your home smarter: Manage compatible smart home devices on the simple interactive display or use your voice. Control lights and switches. Set thermostats. View security cameras.
Alexa has skills: With more than 80,000 skills and counting, Alexa is always getting smarter. Skills are like apps and help you do more like play Jeopardy! or learn something new with wikiHow. Just say, “Alexa, show me skills.”
Alexa for kids: Make your Echo Show 5 kid-friendly at no extra charge by enabling Amazon FreeTime in the Alexa app. Automatically filter explicit content, set bedtime limits, and review activity. Allow independence with calling and video chat only with approved contacts. Children’s privacy is important to Amazon. Learn more about FreeTime on Alexa. With an Amazon FreeTime Unlimited subscription (starting at $2.99 per month), your kids can access over 1,000 Audible books, kid-friendly movies on Prime Video, premium kids skills from brands like Disney and Nickelodeon, ad-free radio stations and playlists, and more.

- Designers have already come up with renders based on these leaks that show us what a list-based app arrangement might look like on the iPhone.

We’re about three months away from Apple’s WWDC 2020 event, which is where Apple will unveil all its software innovation for iPhone, Mac, Watch, TV, and home. Even if the coronavirus outbreak gets worse by then and Apple is forced to cancel the in-person event, the company will probably still unveil the next versions of its operating systems via a virtual press conference. iOS 14 will be the star of the show, as the iPhone remains Apple’s most important product. But a massive iOS 14 leak a few days ago revealed several new features that Apple is building into iOS 14, including a big change that’s coming to the home screen. And designers have now created renders that attempt to guess how these changes might present themselves on the iPhone.

Alexa smart plug deal makes anything in your house smart for $5
- Whether you’re a smart home novice or a tech-savvy expert, Wi-Fi smart plugs are awesome for adding connectivity and smart features to almost any devices in your home that aren’t connected.
- The possibilities are practically endless, but the pricing has been a limitation in the past since big brands charge as much as $30 for a single smart plug.
- Gosund is one of the most popular brands on Amazon when it comes to Wi-Fi smart plugs, and the company’s best-selling model is on sale right now at an all-time low price.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There are so many things you probably think of when you think of the term “smart home.” If you’re not big on gadgets and gizmos or you’re a Luddite of sorts, you probably think of some futuristic house where everything is connected and you have a robot butler like the Jetsons. If you’re a bit savvier and you keep up with current trends, you probably think of smart home devices just like any other things in your house. They’re a necessity at this point, and you might not even really remember a time when life was any different.
In either case, there’s one type of smart home device that anyone and everyone should have. In fact, there’s no such thing as having too many of them. We’re talking about Wi-Fi smart plugs, of course, and there’s a fantastic sale today on Amazon that all of our readers should take advantage of.
Smart Plug Gosund Smart Wifi Outlet Works with Alexa and Google Home, 2.4G Wifi Only, No Hub Re…: $20.49 ($5.12 each (use code WP5MARCH by 3/18)
Gosund Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plugs are among the most popular options on Amazon, and there are a few good reasons for that. First, they’re very affordable even at full retail. On top of that, they offer a wide range of features and can be controlled by an app on your iPhone or Android device, or with voice commands thanks to both Alexa and Google Assistant support.
As we mentioned, these little smart plugs are a bargain any day of the week. Of course, if you have the opportunity to save some money, why wouldn’t you? Head over to the Gosund Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plugs page on Amazon and you’ll find a $2 coupon you can clip on the product page for a 4-pack. Clip it, and then use the promo code WP5MARCH at check out to slash the price all the way down to just $20.49. That’s a new all-time low and it works out to just $5.12 per smart plug. Don’t miss out!

- In a statement, Disney says it will restart these projects as soon as possible.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Disney just took another dramatic step in response to the continued spread of the coronavirus, following the closure of its theme parks in the US.
Its actions now include bringing an immediate halt to all live-action movie production. “While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on our productions, after considering the current environment and the best interests of our cast and crew, we have made the decision to pause production on some of our live-action films for a short time,” DIsney said in a statement. “We will continue to assess the situation and restart as soon as feasible.”

Tom Holland says Spider-Man 3 will be ‘insane’ – but the reason is a mystery
- Spider-Man 3 has the best premise of any Spider-Man film so far: For the first time, the world knows the identity of the superhero.
- The third installment in Marvel and Sony’s trilogy is set to start shooting in July, with the movie expected to be released next summer if there aren’t any coronavirus-related delays.
- Tom Holland, who will reprise his role as Spider-Man for the upcoming film, says Spider-Man 3 is “insane.”
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The coronavirus pandemic could ruin the MCU Phase 4, which we already told you, as the outbreak could cause launch delays and production downtime. And if Marvel ends up postponing the launch of Black Widow, which is set to premiere on May 1st, then it might have to roll back all 13 other MCU Phase 4 titles accordingly. In total, we have six films and eight Disney+ series to look forward too, and we’ve already discussed some of the most exciting ones, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or the WandaVision and Loki TV series. But they’re hardly the only new exciting adventures planned. Spider-Man 3 is one other standout Phase 4 story, and the film should easily be the most exciting Spider-Man film in both the MCU and Sony’s history.

Amazon somehow has a top-rated robot vacuum on sale for $130 today
- Some of the best Roomba robot vacuums on the market are discounted today on Amazon.
- Top deals include $200 off the incredible Roomba i7+ that vacuums your floors and then empties itself, and a deal that gets you the Roomba 614 for just $224.
- Anyone in search of a high-quality robot vacuum at a rock bottom price has an even cheaper option right now, however: the popular ILIFE V3s Pro Robotic Vacuum, which is on sale for just $129.99.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
iRobot’s lineup of Roomba robot vacuums used to be priced far out of reach for many people and top-of-the-line Roomba models are still very expensive. Take the iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal, for example. This incredible robotic vacuum cleaner has powerful suction and all the bells and whistles you can think of, plus it has a feature you’ll never find on lesser models: when the i7+ fills up with dust, dirt, and pet hair, it returns to a special base station and actually empties itself. Then it goes back to work, so it can literally run for months without you ever having to think about it.
iRobot Roomba i7+ (7550) Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal-Empties Itself, Wi-Fi Connec…: $799.00
The Roomba i7+ is $200 off right now on Amazon, but it’s still pretty pricey for a robot vacuum. Other, simpler Roomba models are on sale right now too, like the iRobot Roomba 614 Robot Vacuum for $224 or the upgraded Roomba 675 with Alexa support for $269. Those are both great deals, but there’s another sale happening today on Amazon that you should definitely consider before you buy any of those models.
iRobot Roomba 614 Robot Vacuum- Good for Pet Hair, Carpets, Hard Floors, Self-Charging: $224.00
iRobot Roomba 675 Robot Vacuum-Wi-Fi Connectivity, Works with Alexa, Good for Pet Hair, Carpets…: $269.00
The ILIFE V3s Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner doesn’t quite have the same brand awareness as Roomba, but it also doesn’t have iRobot’s huge marketing budget to work with. Those who do get this model always seem to rave about it though, and that helps explain why it has more than 2,500 5-star ratings on Amazon.
ILIFE V3s Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner, Tangle-free Suction , Slim, Automatic Self-Charging Roboti…: $129.99
Don’t let the slim profile of ILIFE’s V3s Pro fool you, this is a powerful robot vacuum with strong suction that’s on par with mid-range Roomba models. It also has self-charging just like Roombas, and it works just as well on low-pile carpet as it does on hard flooring. This great model regularly retails for $160, and that’s already much lower than what you’d pay for a comparable Roomba or even a similar model from a budget brand. Thanks to Amazon’s one-day Gold Box deal on Sunday, you can snag one for only $129.99 after you clip the on-site coupon! That’s an incredible price and it won’t be available for much longer, so definitely grab one while you still can.

Flatten the curve: The only way America can handle the coronavirus pandemic
- Health officials are begging us to help “flatten the curve” of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
- But what does it mean to flatten the curve, and why is it so important?
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
In all the drama surrounding the novel coronavirus pandemic, it can be hard to navigate a whole new world of phrases and terms. One of the terms you’ve probably heard a lot about is “flattening the curve,” but what does that even mean, and why is it so important to help us make it through this difficult situation?
Before we talk about flattening the curve it’s best to understand that it applies to how an illness — in this case, COVID-19 — spreads in a population. If you were to plot the number of infections on a graph, it wouldn’t go up in a straight diagonal line. When left unchecked, or if we don’t do enough to prevent new infections, the rate of new cases increases exponentially, with many times more people affected each day.

- Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, says WWDC 2020 is “going to be big.”
- Visit BGR’s home page to read more stories.
In light of the coronavirus outbreak, Apple announced on Friday that this year’s edition of its Worldwide Developers Conference will be “a completely new online experience” with no plans for in-person meetings or a traditional keynote address. Despite the change in format, Apple says that the event will still give developers access to new versions of its software and will have content for “consumers, press, and developers alike.”
Alongside its iPhone reveal events every year, WWDC is perhaps Apple’s most important annual gathering, giving thousands of developers access to the information and the tools they need to build new software. Apple notes that there are more than 23 million registered developers in over 155 countries and regions.
