The coronavirus outbreak is getting worse in western countries and other regions, but the situation has been steadily improving in China, where it all began. The country needed more than two months to slow down the infection rate, a process that almost brought to a halt the economy in certain regions. Strict lockdown policies meant to quarantine the Wuhan region and other hot zones in the country had a massive impact on day to day life as well as business. Millions of people were advised to stay indoors to reduce the risk of transmissions, and these measures had a direct impact on the economy. Apple is just one of the many companies directly affected by the coronavirus lockdowns in China, and the company was forced to shut all its 42 stores in the region. These stores are open again in the region, just as Apple is adapting store operations in the US due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Netflix is an absolutely indispensable entertainment option for me these days — and, I suspect, for many of you in light of the spread of the coronavirus which is forcing a growing number of people to self-quarantine and practice social distancing. The boredom from staying at home is going to get old pretty quick, and binge-watching your favorite Netflix series is one way to pass the time.
• I do have one suggestion of a killer new feature I wish the streamer would add: More proactive descriptions about what the status is for all the shows you love that you’re waiting on right now. This one is in production, that one is delayed, whatever — something concrete so I didn’t have to actively scour the web constantly to figure out what’s going on with my shows.

With all of the self-quarantining going on at the moment in response to the inexorable spread of the coronavirus, not to mention people changing up their daily patterns and hunkering down away from crowds and public spaces, it doesn’t take a fortune-teller to predict there’s going to be a lot more streaming and Netflix-and-chilling in the days and weeks to come as many of us turn into temporary homebodies.

If you follow any of Netflix’s various social media accounts, you may have seen the streamer gently trying to prod everyone to do exactly that by offering not-so-subtle reminders of the massive library of content available to binge via the service. Personally, I’ve also noticed an uptick in those reminder emails that Netflix sends out, reminding me I’ve been a laggard in getting caught up on the various series in my library. “Don’t forget to finish The Good Place” reads the subject line of an email I got from Netflix just today, in fact. I know some of you get annoyed by this kind of thing, but I don’t mind it too much. One request I do have of the streamer, however, regards the addition of a new feature along these same lines that I think could be a game-changer, would hook me even more deeply on the service, and would be especially useful right now when you’ve got a ton of viewers who are going to be settling in for no doubt multiple binge sessions over the coming days.

• Astronomers detected a distant exoplanet with iron rain.
• Iron is vaporized due to high daytime temperatures and then condenses into rain as it moves to the cooler night side, becoming rain.
• The planet is located 640 light years from Earth and was studied using ESO’s Very Large Telescope.

Scientists have spotted a new exoplanet with a particularly extreme form of weather. The planet is believed to have frequent rains, but the material falling from the skies isn’t water… it’s liquid iron. The planet is known as WASP-76b, and it’s totally wild.

The mechanism by which this iron rain occurs is made possible due to the planet’s incredibly hot temperatures. On the day side, researchers believe the temperatures can climb to a whopping 2,400 degrees Celsius, while the night side is significantly cooler.

Space Jam isn’t an award-winning movie by any means, but the 1996 film starring Michael Jordan and an assortment of other NBA stars is certainly iconic. • The launch of the ExoMars mission has been delayed from 2020 to 2022 over testing woes and coronavirus concerns.
• The mission, which is being conducted by the European Space Agency in partnership with Russia’s Roscosmos, had previously been slated for a launch this summer.
• NASA’s Mars 2020 mission is still on schedule, at least for now.

The ExoMars mission slated to launch this year has been delayed to 2022 over the need for additional testing as well as fears that the coronavirus pandemic would prevent the necessary personnel from being able to travel freely. The decision was announced by the European Space Agency, which has partnered with Russia’s Roscosmos for the mission.

Preparation for the mission is very close to complete, but testing of the parachutes that will ensure a soft landing on the Martian surface revealed the need for additional tweaking. With the timeline so short, and with the looming coronavirus pandemic complicating things even more, the team has made the tough call to delay the mission until 2022.

What’s always been fascinating about Tesla is that a lot of the company’s problems haven’t stemmed from a lack of demand, but rather a lack of supply. Whereas most automotive companies work diligently to boost sales and overall interest, Tesla has always struggled with boosting production to a sufficient level to meet overwhelming demand.

What’s more, every car Tesla has ever released has been subject to significant delays. From the original Roadster to the Model 3, Tesla has a bad habit of announcing production deadlines and release dates that it simply can’t meet. Model X deliveries, for example, were initially expected to begin in early 2014. A myriad of production issues, however, pushed that date all the way back to September of 2014, representing a nearly two-year delay.

• Major smartphone releases still to come this year from Samsung include the Galaxy Note 20, with some color renders having recently emerged to suggest the kind of design Samsung is likely to give the handset.
• Meantime, the electronics giant has apparently been working on a mysterious new kind of smartphone display technology, one for which it’s just filed a trademark application. It’s not clear what the technology will consist of, as the filing describes it as essentially a screen for a smartphone without revealing anything else.
• The new display could show up in the Note 20, but there’s also a chance it could be intended for some of Samsung’s more experimental smartphone designs, like the handsets with extendable screens that the company has been experimenting with.

One of the things Samsung does as well as anybody — okay, better than most everyone else, really — is the manufacture of gorgeous, top-of-the-line smartphone displays. Back in 2008, Samsung introduced the first AMOLED display, following that up with other display technology refinements like the Super AMOLED display and Dynamic AMOLED displays. That latter has been a fixture of the S10, as well as making an appearance in the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip, both of which rely on this kind of display.

Meantime, it should come as no surprise that Samsung is continuing to push the bounds of its smartphone display expertise — and, in fact, the consumer electronics giant seems to be working on an entirely new kind of display, although it seems to be keeping the details under wraps at the moment.

• A new discovery suggests that Apple might be exploring new features for Face ID, which could work best on devices with bigger screens, including iPads and MacBooks.

From the moment I started using Face ID on the iPhone X a few years ago, I never looked back. 3D face recognition doesn’t always work, and may take a while to master, but it’s the best thing to have happened to the iPhone in years. It delivers instant, perpetual authentication, which is impressive to use not just for unlocking the phone, but also for other apps that might require password input or biometrics-based authentication.

In other words, if an app supports Face ID, I have it enabled, and logging into it is a breeze. I’ve said before that Face ID is the future of authentication for Apple devices, and the feature might soon be used on more products, not just the iPhone and iPad Pro. In fact, if there’s a product I’d want to see Face ID on, it’s the Mac.

It’s no secret that iPhone sales, at best, have been somewhat stagnant over the past few years. Despite Apple’s best efforts to create excitement surrounding new models, the simple reality is that most iPhone releases over the past few years have been incremental at best. And while this doesn’t mean that new iPhone models are unimpressive with respect to performance and new features, it does illustrate that convincing iPhone owners to upgrade is more challenging than ever.

That notwithstanding, a lack of iPhone sales growth hasn’t fundamentally impacted Apple’s bottom line. For starters, with iPhone sales now priced higher than ever, Apple has been able to offset a drop off in iPhone sales volume with a higher ASP per phone. What’s more, Apple has a burgeoning services division that continues to grow at an impressive clip. And last but not least, Apple’s “Wearables, Home, and Accessories” division — which includes AirPods and the Apple Watch — continues to see huge increases in quarterly revenue.
