Coronavirus vaccine poised to begin human trials
- An early COVID-19 vaccine is quickly being readied for human trials.
- The company behind the drug, Moderna, hoped to have human testing underway by summer, but now says it could begin within weeks.
- Even if the vaccine is safe and effective, it will still take many months before it’s widely available.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of the first US companies to come up with a viable vaccine candidate for the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly approaching its first human trials. The treatment was developed by Moderna, which provided the National Institutes of Health with samples of its vaccine in preparation for the eventual trials that will determine whether it is effective in preventing the virus from infecting a patient.
Initially, it was believed that the trials wouldn’t be able to begin until summer, but that timeline has dramatically shifted. The priority now is finding a treatment that works, but even if Moderna’s drug is effective, that doesn’t mean it’ll be available any time soon.

New PS5 leak suggests performance will be similar to Xbox Series X
- New PlayStation 5 leak suggests that the next-gen console with ship with an 11.06 teraflop GPU with 52 compute units clocked at 1743 MHz.
- This PS5 leak seems to suggest Sony’s console will match up well with the Xbox Series X.
- Microsoft announced last month that the Xbox Series X GPU will leverage 12 teraflops of performance.
- Visit BGR’s homepage to read more stories.
When February came and went without a peep from Sony about the PlayStation 5, it became clear that the schedule for the next-gen console’s reveal would not follow that of the PS4, which made its debut at the PlayStation Meeting on February 20th, 2013. Sony had something else in store for its next console, but with the coronavirus outbreak shutting down entire countries, it’s possible that everything has been pushed back. Whatever the case, we’re now almost two weeks into March, and we know as much about the PS5 now as we did on New Year’s Day.
In the meantime, those desperate for news have turned to self-proclaimed insiders for even the smallest tidbits, and while many of the leaks regarding the PS5 have been unsubstantiated and nonsensical, others (some of which we’ve covered) are more believable, which is the case with a recent post on the NeoGAF forum.

‘Black Widow’ isn’t delayed, but MCU Phase 4 could still be in trouble
- Marvel’s Black Widow will launch on May 1st in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly because Disney can’t really afford to delay any of its movies and TV series. Postponing Black Widow might delay other shows since all the stories are connected.
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a limited TV series for Disney+, should follow in August, but the coronavirus outbreak already has had an impact on the show’s production.
- Similarly, other MCU Phase 4 TV series that are in production might be affected by delays caused by the new disease.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Watching a brand new movie in cinemas might be a thing of the past until the coronavirus pandemic is under control, at least in those regions seeing a surge in daily infections. Sony is one of the tech giants that’s been among the first to withdraw from events that draw plenty of crowds, including MWC, PAX East, and GDC, to minimize COVID-19 transmission risks. Avoiding large gatherings of people is one of the things you can do to protect yourself against infection, and Sony is acutely aware of that. It’s also very aware that the coronavirus will have a significant impact on certain sectors of the economy and its bottom line, and the company is already taking measures to protect its business. The company delayed two movie releases, including the brand new James Bond as well as Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. The delay of No Time to Die was particularly surprising, given that it’s one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.
Not all studios can afford to do the same thing with their upcoming 2020 creations, and that includes Disney’s Marvel. Earlier this week, Marvel released the final trailer for Black Widow, reiterating plans to release the first MCU Phase 4 flick on May 1st, as previously announced. Unlike Sony, which might have plenty of wiggle room with its movie releases, Disney might be forced to go forward with Marvel movies regardless of any potential financial hit.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 was just announced – get the Ring Doorbell 2 on sale instead
- Amazon’s Ring Video Doorbell 2 is the company’s best-selling model, offering fantastic features for $50 less than the Ring Video Doorbell Pro model.
- There have been a few discounted bundles with the Ring Video Doorbell 2 this year and refurbished models have gone on sale, but the Ring 2 itself has remained steady at $199.
- Today, Amazon gave the Ring Video Doorbell 2 a price discount for the first time in 2020, slashing 15% off its retail price for a limited time now that the new Ring Video Doorbell 3 has been announced.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When it comes to video doorbells, you really can’t go wrong with any of the models Amazon-owned Ring currently offers. Prices start at $100 for the entry-level Ring Video Doorbell with 720p resolution, and they climb as high as $500 for the Ring Video Doorbell Elite with 1080p resolution, Ethernet support, and plenty more. That’s a hefty chunk of change to cough up for a video doorbell though, which might be why most people land on the $200 Ring Video Doorbell 2. And now, Amazon has unveiled a new version of this model dubbed the Ring Video Doorbell 3. It’s currently available for pre-order ahead of its release on April 8, and it costs $200 just like the second-generation version it replaces. Before you order one though, there’s another route you should consider.
All-new Ring Video Doorbell 3 – 1080p HD video, improved motion detection, easy installation: $199.99
The Ring Doorbell 3 shows you who’s at your front door with a vivid 1080p live video stream to your smartphone, tablet, TV, or even a smart display like the Echo Show 5 (which is on sale right now for $59.99 if you pick up a refurb on Amazon). Whether you’re 10 feet from your front door or 10,000 miles away from home, you can always see what’s going on. The doorbell can automatically record video and alert you to movement as well if you want, and there are plenty more great features to be found. Of course, the Ring Video Doorbell 2 does all that as well! The only real differences are 5Ghz Wi-Fi support and slightly different motion detection controls. Is that worth paying extra for?
Ring Video Doorbell 2 with HD Video, Motion Activated Alerts, Easy Installation: $169.00
You should definitely consider checking out the Ring Video Doorbell 2 instead. It’s super easy to install — power comes either from a battery pack or from the cables that were running to your old doorbell depending on how you install the Ring Video Doorbell 2. The doorbell is also fully compatible with Alexa, so you can say things like “Alexa, talk to the front door” and you’ll instantly be talking to whoever might be approaching your home. You can set motion zones as well so that you’re not alerted when cars drive by, for example.
There’s no question that the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is well worth its regular price of $200, but Amazon just dropped the price for a limited time to $169. It’s the first time the standalone Ring Doorbell 2 has gone on sale this year so far, but this deal won’t last long so definitely get in on the action before it’s too late.
Ring Video Doorbell 2 with HD Video, Motion Activated Alerts, Easy Installation: $169.00
Also of note, there’s another great Ring Doorbell deal right now on Amazon if you don’t mind 720p resolution and missing out on a few other features. The Ring Video Doorbell and Ring Chime normally cost $130 combined if you buy them separately, but you can pick them up today as a bundle and only pay $109.98 total.

iPhone shortages might be over soon, as work at Foxconn resumes
- iPhone assembler Foxconn says that production has resumed and is exceeding expectations.
- The worst of the coronavirus outbreak is seemingly behind China as a whole as life begins to get back to normal.
- Although production in China is getting back on track, iPhone sales are still expected to be lower than usual as the rest of the world deals with the outbreak.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When the coronavirus outbreak struck China in late 2019, one of the first steps that the country took was to keep its citizens out of places where they might be more likely to catch or spread the virus. Stop and think for even an instant about just how much of what you own was either manufactured in China or contains parts that were manufactured in China and you can begin to understand the impact of countless factories shutting down for days or weeks at a time. Unsurprisingly, Apple’s iPhone was one of many products affected by the shutdown.
As we’ve reported on multiple occasions over the past few weeks, iPhone production slowed significantly, leading to constrained supplies and lower sales around the world, but now that the situation appears to be stabilizing in China, Hon Hai Precision Industry (aka Foxconn) is reporting that not only has production finally resumed at its factories in mainland China, but that the factories have “exceeded expectations” (via South China Morning Post).

Surprise Philips Hue sale on Amazon has 4 deep discounts
- Decent discounts on Philips Hue LED smart lighting products have become extremely rare over the past year, to the point where there were no notable Hue deals at all on Black Friday.
- In a surprise sale on Thursday, Amazon is offering the lowest prices we’ve seen all year on four different Philips Hue lighting products.
- Included among today’s deals is a sale that slashes 2-packs of Philips Hue A19 Multicolor LED Smart Light Blubs to just $76.97, or $38.49 apiece, which is among the best deals we’ve ever seen for this popular model.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Philips Hue’s various LED smart lighting products are wildly popular and wildly expensive, but the good news used to be that we could always count on the company to offer great deals just about every week through Amazon and other big retailers. Over the past year, however, those deals have almost completely washed up.
Sales on Philips Hue light bulbs and other smart lighting solutions have gotten so rare these days that there weren’t even any noteworthy Philips Hue deals during Black Friday last year. We could always count on Philips Hue to have a huge showing ahead of the holidays during Black Friday and Cyber Week, but that’s apparently no longer the case. That’s why it comes as such a surprise that Philips Hue has come from out of nowhere to offer four great deals on LED smart lights through Amazon.
The single most popular Hue bulb out there is the Philips Hue A19 Multicolor LED Smart Light Bulb, which retails for a hefty $50. That’s right, $50 for a single smart light bulb while other brands charge as little as $15 or even less. Philips Hue offers much higher quality and more versatility than any other smart lighting brand though, so many people prefer it. If you’re among them, you can snag these $50 bulbs right now on Amazon for $42 apiece. That’s if you buy individual bulbs, but you can actually save even more if you pick up Philips Hue A19 Multicolor LED Smart Light Bulb 2-packs. They’re just $75.47 right now on Amazon, which works out to $37.74 per bulb. That is by far the lowest price we’ve seen this year, and it might be the lowest price since Prime Day last year.
Philips Hue 548487 Smart Light Bulb, 1, White and Color Ambiance: $42.00
Philips Hue 548610 Smart Light Bulb, 2, White and Color Ambiance: $75.47 ($37.74 each)
Beyond Amazon’s deals on individual bulbs and 2-packs, there are also a pair of deals the retailer is offering on starter kits. These Philips Hue kits bundle LED smart light bulbs with a Hue Hub, which is needed in order for the bulbs to work. If you already have a Philips Hue setup then you don’t need to worry about this. If you don’t have one though, then you should check out these deals.
First, the Philips Hue 2-Pack Premium Multicolor Smart Light Starter Kit that consists of two A19 color bulbs and a Hue Hub is on sale for $128.99, down from its normal price of $150. If you don’t really care about the colors, you can pick up a Philips Hue White Ambiance Smart Bulb Starter Kit with four A19 white bulbs and a Hue Hub for $109. It normally sells for $150, so that’s a killer deal.

This hidden Google Maps trick helps protect you from the coronavirus
- Google Maps has a few handy features that can help users deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic, including a built-in tool that will let you order food from inside the app.
- As long as restaurants support the feature and as long as they’re still open for business, you can place your food order directly from within the navigation app.
- Payment is made from inside the app as well, so you don’t even have to exchange money with the delivery person.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The coronavirus pandemic will eventually be defeated, but that’s not happening anytime soon unless we all adhere to stricter rules. The best way to protect yourself against a potential infection is to limit your interactions with other people and keep clean at all times. Wash your hands as often as possible after you come in contact with other people or objects that may have been touched by others, and stay indoors as much as you can. “Social distancing” is a luxury not everyone can afford if they have to go to work, school, or other essential locations. Even if you work from home, you’ll still have to get out of the house to purchase supplies and food, and there’s no escaping that even in a lockdown. That’s what’s happening in Italy right now, where only grocery stores and pharmacies are open. Ordering online isn’t risk-free either, you’ll still have to meet a delivery person to get your stuff. However, that’s one way of further limiting your interactions with people, and Google Maps has a neat trick you might not know about that can help.

Trump’s Europe travel ban freaked everyone out, but there are two big things he got wrong
- Wednesday was a day filled with a dizzying array of news related to the continued spread of coronavirus in the US, ending with a speech from President Trump televised live from the Oval Office.
- It capped a whirlwind of news from that same day which included everything from the World Health Organization declaring coronavirus a global pandemic, the NBA canceling its season, and Tom Hanks confirming he’s tested positive for coronavirus.
- Trump’s speech was one more addition to public worry about all this since it added a ban on travel from Europe to the mix. However, there are two huge corrections to note about the speech.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
In an effort to show that the US is taking the coronavirus spread seriously, President Trump delivered a televised address from the Oval Office on Wednesday night that included announcing such dramatic steps as a ban on travel from Europe which also seemed to include a temporary halt on cargo shipped from Europe.
If it was meant to calm the panic that’s starting to spread around the country in the US, though, it backfired in a major way. The travel ban immediately brought more questions than answers, and it was one more head-spinning piece of news on a day that also included the World Health Organization declaring the virus a global pandemic, the NBA canceling the remainder of its season, and actor Tom Hanks disclosing that he and his wife have tested positive for the virus. Here’s the thing, though: There were at least two major errors in Trump’s speech that had to be clarified.

Working from home because of coronavirus? You need this $40 device
- The WHO has officially declared that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 is a global pandemic, which has led to many businesses temporarily closing their offices.
- Many employees must work from home as a result, and they might not be used to working remotely or have the proper tools at hand.
- One device in particular is something that everyone who works at home should have and it’s on sale right now on Amazon for just $39.99.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Regardless of what the current White House administration had to say about the novel coronavirus as recently as a few days ago, everyone with a pair of eyes and a brain could see where this was headed. Yesterday, it was made official: the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Things are going to get much worse before they start to get better, and millions of people will have been infected by the new coronavirus when all is said and done.
The good news is that the majority of COVID-19 cases are relatively mild. The elderly and people with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, and diabetes are more at risk than healthy individuals, but the virus is so new that there’s still plenty we don’t know about it. It’s a good idea to keep your eye on WHO’s COVID-19 Q&A and the CDC’s COVID-19 page for the latest verified information, especially since there is so much misinformation being circulated.
Of course, the best way to avoid the novel coronavirus is to distance yourself from other people who might be infected. For that reason, many companies are beginning to close their offices and ask employees to work from home.
If you find yourself working from home and you’re not used to it, there’s no question that it can be an adjustment. Focusing can be difficult, for example, since there are so many distractions and no one is there to make sure you keep your eye on the ball. We can’t help you in that department, but there is one way we can help: By letting you in on a little secret that will dramatically improve internet connectivity on your computer while you work.
TP-Link AV1000 Powerline Ethernet Adapter – Gigabit Port, Plug&Play, Power Saving(TL-PA7010 KIT…: $39.99
If you’re working from home, that probably means other members of your family are stuck at home as well. Your neighbors and other people in your area might be in the same boat. All those people at home all day lead to network congestion and, even more frequently, Wi-Fi interference. What you might not realize is that you don’t have to be connected to your Wi-Fi network at all.
There’s a simple accessory you can purchase on Amazon that guarantees you’ll always have the fastest possible internet connection while you work. It’s called the TP-Link AV1000 Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit, and it’s on sale right now for just $39.99 instead of $50. In a nutshell, the kit consists of two boxes that instantly transform your regular old power outlets into gigabit Ethernet ports. Just plug one in near your router, plug the other one in near your computer, and connect to them using regular Ethernet cables. Just like that, you’ve got wired gigabit data speeds! Note that you might need to check the “other sellers” section on Amazon to get the lowest price.
