Coronavirus now a global pandemic, World Health Organization says
- Coronavirus COVID-19 is a global pandemic, the World Health Organization declared today.
- The group initially refused to use the label of “pandemic,” but said the severity of the outbreak now meets the loosely-defined criteria.
- The United States has taken few measures to curb the spread of the disease.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The World Health Organization just declared the coronavirus outbreak COVID-19 has reached the level of a global pandemic. After repeatedly announcing that it would hold off on making that declaration until it was absolutely certain of the severity of the outbreak and its spread, the group made the call today and announced it at a press conference from Geneva, Switzerland.
The declaration comes as confirmed cases of coronavirus infection continue to grow, passing 115,000. Over 1,000 of those cases are in the United States, but these figures are likely much lower than the true number of infected individuals, meaning the outbreak is far more widespread than it appears on a map.

Microsoft to host Xbox Series X digital event now that E3 is canceled
- The Electronic Software Association officially canceled E3 2020 on Wednesday amid growing concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus.
- Microsoft is planning an “Xbox digital event” to discuss its future plans in place of its E3 keynote.
- Ubisoft and EA are both deciding their next steps as well in light of the cancellation.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Following a smattering of tweets and reports on Tuesday evening, the Electronic Software Association (ESA) officially confirmed on Wednesday that E3 2020 has been canceled due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus outbreak. As it became clear that the spread of COVID-19 was not expected to stop any time soon, many expected that it was only a matter of time before the ESA would have to cancel the show, which attracted over 60,000 people last year.
“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry—our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners—we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles,” the ESA said in a statement.

One of Google Maps’ best new features is finally rolling out to more users
- Google Maps users in several countries are reporting the rollout of a highly-anticipated feature, the speed limit indicator.
- The feature was first released last year, but not all markets where Google Maps is available got it.
- Google has started quietly updating Maps in several countries in Europe and India, making the speed limit icon visible inside the app.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As great as Google Maps might be, not all users get to take advantage of the app’s brand new features at the same time, as these updates are rolled out gradually to more and more people. The Android version of Maps is always guaranteed to get the latest Maps updates first, and some of the new features might actually never make it to the iPhone. But even if you’re on Android, you might not necessarily be able to experience some of the latest Google Maps innovations when they’re announced. That goes for a feature that you’ve been waiting for Google to include in Maps for years, a feature that started rolling out in 2019 to users in some countries: The speed limit indicator.

Calling all gamers, it’s time to celebrate the greatest video game character ever created. We’re obviously talking about none other than Mario, the lovable star of more Super Mario games than we can count at this point. We fell in love with Nintendo’s Mario character the first time we played the original Super Mario Bros game back in the 1980s, and Mario has only gotten better with age. Now, we get to commemorate the creation of this cute little cartoon thanks to MAR10 Day and MAR10 Week.
“MAR10” is Mario but stylized, of course, and MAR10 Week is an annual celebration of the character who has become one of the most iconic video game protagonists of all time, if not THE most iconic protagonist. He’s an easy character to get behind since he’s always going out of his way to rescue Princess Peach. He also stars in a wide range of games available for the Nintendo Switch, and Amazon is discounting all the best Mario titles right now for MAR10 Week.
A quick note before we get to the deals: There’s a good chance that all the hottest titles in this sales event are going to sell out, so hurry or you’ll definitely miss them.

Whether you’ve played Mario Kart once or a million times, it just never gets old. One of the newest Mario games for Nintendo Switch gets an even deeper discount for MAR10 Week — hurry and you can pick up a copy of Super Mario Maker 2 for just $39.99, a $20 discount. You can also save just over $12 on Mario Tennis Aces right now.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is also a $60 game on the Nintendo Switch, but it’s discounted off for this week’s big celebration. Super Mario Party gets an even deeper discount to $39.99 this week on Amazon, which is totally a steal. Of all the games on sale for MAR10 Week, the steepest discount can be found on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which might be the best Mario game you’ve never played. It costs $60 in stores, but right now it’s down to an all-time low of only $14.99.

PS5 and Xbox Series X releases delayed? Here’s what top insiders say
- The PS5 release date might be set for sometime in November, analysts say, which is also when the new Xbox Series X should launch.
- That’s in line with Sony and Microsoft’s launch plans for the PS4 and Xbox One, which both launched in November 2013.
- Regardless of what happens with the coronavirus outbreak, the two companies should still be able to start sales during the holiday season, even if stock shortages might hurt initial sales.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The iPhone 12 isn’t the only highly anticipated product of the year, as 2020 is a particularly special year for gamers. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are expected to launch during the holiday season according to Sony and Microsoft, although we don’t have firm release dates for either console. 2020 is also a special year when it comes to something else, the emergence of a brand new viral disease that can be very dangerous to certain patients. The novel coronavirus outbreak is so massive that it’s already impacting day-to-day life in Western countries, who are just beginning to experience what China ha been going through for the past few months. The lockdowns in mainland China have limited the spread of the virus significantly, but also impacted production lines for various devices, with the iPhone 12 being a prime example of that. The handset is already rumored to see a delay of at least a month. It is therefore perfectly logical to assume that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will see their own delays because of the epidemic. But industry insiders still expect both of the new consoles to hit stores in November, no matter what happens next with the COVID-19 outbreak.

E3 2020 canceled due to coronavirus outbreak
- E3 2020 is reportedly being canceled amid fears of the coronavirus outbreak, putting Microsoft’s Xbox Series X first major public showcase in limbo.

In addition to being a serious public health and safety hazard, the coronavirus outbreak is taking its toll on the gaming industry. When GDC 2020 was officially canceled in February, all eyes turned to E3, where Microsoft was expected to divulge its next-gen plans and the launch lineup for the Xbox Series X. Even though Sony had pulled out of the event, the week of June 7th was going to be an exciting one for the industry. But on Tuesday night, a multitude of reports made it clear that the biggest video game event of the year would no longer be happening.
Following the trickle of tweets from video game reporters and industry professionals on Tuesday evening, Bloomberg made the cancellation all but official with a sourced report of its own. According to a person familiar with the matter, the Electronic Software Association, which organizes the annual show, will announce the cancellation at 9:30 AM PT / 12:30 PM ET on Wednesday. The ESA reportedly wrote a memo to partners in order to let them know that the group is “exploring options for an online E3 event this summer” to take the place of the exposition.
