Samsung vs. Apple: New book promises tell-all history of one of tech’s great rivalries

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung and Apple have been fierce rivals in the smartphone game for years, each paying intensely close attention to what the other is doing and then strongly insisting that they do no such thing at all.
  • A new book set to be published next week, Samsung Rising: The Inside Story of the South Korean Giant That Set Out to Beat Apple and Conquer Tech, promises a riveting account of the competition between each company as they climbed to the top of the global smartphone market. The book will be out on March 17.

As far as revealing anecdotes go, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that offers a more apt summation of the years-long battle between Samsung and Apple than one that Geoffrey Cain includes in his new book Samsung Rising which is set to be published next week.

As a kind of rally-the-troops move to remind Samsung who they should consider their Public Enemy #1, Samsung at one point resorted to delivering truckloads of apples to its various offices. Employees were then encouraged to grab an apple from the piles that were placed in breakrooms and to take a bite out of it as the company’s smartphone battle against the iPhone raged on. The physical act of taking a bite out of one Apple was meant to represent the never-ending quest to take a metaphorical bite out of another much bigger apple. “We had one objective,” an anonymous Samsung executive is quoted as saying in the book, which will be published March 17. “Beat Apple. I’m not kidding you.”

Coronavirus is forcing New York state to make its own hand sanitizer

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The state of New York will be making its own hand sanitizer in the wake of shortages and price gouging due to the coronavirus outbreak.
  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the product is highly effective thanks to its 75% alcohol content.
  • The hand sanitizer will be provided to places like school and government buildings as well as prisons, but may be sold if shortages continue.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus outbreak has caused a shortage of many popular sanitizing products, especially in areas where the virus is threatening to spread quickly. Cleaners and soap, as well as hand sanitizer, are highly sought after items. In New York, the shortages are so bad that Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that the state is now manufacturing its own hand sanitizer rather than trying to buy it from vendors.

At a press conference, the governor noted that supply shortages and price gouging are what prompted the decision to begin manufacturing the product. The sanitizer will initially be supplied to government entities and places like schools and prisons.

With the coronavirus outbreak likely to get worse better it gets any better, people are taking additional precautions to lessen the chances that they become infected. Working from home, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and carrying around hand sanitizer when going out are all common methods of keeping yourself safe, but what you might not realize is that the one object you put your hands on as often as anything else you own might also be the dirtiest. I’m talking about, of course, your phone, and you should really think about cleaning it.

  • The first supermoon of 2020 — the Super Worm Moon — happens on the evening of March 9th.
  • Supermoons occur when the Moon and Earth are closer than normal and the Moon is full in the sky.
  • It’s called the Super Worm Moon as a nod to spring and new life.

Skywatchers are always looking for a reason to gaze skyward after the sun sets, and if that sounds like you, tonight will offer you a great opportunity to do so. The first supermoon of 2020 is happening right now, and will be visible on the evening of March 9th — weather permitting, of course.

It’s the Super Worm Moon, but don’t let that silly (pointless) nickname distract you from the fact that this will be a great opportunity to enjoy Earth’s tiny neighbor in all its glory. Tonight, as with all supermoon events, the Moon will appear slightly larger and brighter than it normally does, so if you’ve been searching for a reason to stay up past your bedtime, this is it.

Apple offers free iPad Air 3 repairs to fix blank screen issue

My personal experience with Apple’s iPad line has been a positive one. I’ve had a 2nd-gen iPad Air since 2015, and it still runs as well today as it did when I bought it, even if there are an increasing number of iOS apps that are no longer compatible with it. Unfortunately, not every iPad owner can say the same, as Apple recently announced a program to address an issue with 3rd-gen iPad Air models that causes screens to go permanently blank.

Google unveils massive coronavirus response, including Search updates

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus outbreak shows no signs of slowing down in the US, with the latest numbers as of the time of this writing including more than 108,000 people globally having been affected and more than 3,800 deaths as a result of it.
  • Google’s CEO has spelled out a massive, multi-faceted response the search giant is implementing in response to the virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to roil the globe, so much so that it fed a historic US stock market plunge on Monday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a memo to employees of the search giant detailing its own massive response to the health crisis. A version of that memo has also been shared with reporters and the public, in which Google’s chief executive calls this “an unprecedented moment” and one that it’s important that Google approach “with a sense of calm and responsibility — because we have many people counting on us.”

Among the many steps Google has taken, it’s set up a 24-hour incident response team to stay in sync with the World Health Organization; the company is testing its capacity to increase remote work throughout the organization; some offices have shifted to a work-from-home status; Google is providing $25 million in donated ad credit to the WHO and other government agencies; and Verily, the healthcare subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, is developing a small temperature patch that can be worn and which transmits data to a phone app. The goal is for that patch to provide timely notification of fever and support earlier diagnosis and treatment of something like coronavirus.

Alien life on distant planets almost certainly exists, scientist says

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The question of whether or not Earth is the only place where life exists in the universe remains unanswered and, according to a new research paper, it may remain unanswered forever, as far as the human race is concerned. As astronomers and mathematicians have expanded their understanding of the universe and provided new insights and theories as to its size and expansion, we’re beginning to understand why it’s so hard to find other intelligent life, and why it (probably) still hasn’t found us.

While many studies have focused on the likelihood of life taking root on other worlds based on factors like the ratio of habitable planets or the number of planets orbiting certain types of stars, this one is a bit different. The research revolves around how RNA — ribonucleic acid, vital to life as we know it — forms, self-replicates, and eventually results in complex life.

How to fix a new Windows 10 bug that’s even more serious than you thought

  • Windows 10 users have discovered a bug that makes it impossible to install drivers outside of Windows Update.
  • Here’s Microsoft’s fix: Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Device Security and then under Core isolation, select Core isolation details and turn off Memory integrity.
  • No information about a permanent fix has been revealed by Microsoft yet.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Relative to some of its previous operating systems, Windows 10 has been a success for Microsoft. Not only are there over 900 million devices running Windows 10, but the OS has been stable and usable from the day it first launched. It is a noteworthy step up from Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but like any software, it’s not perfect, as evidenced by the company’s confirmation of a bug that prevents users from manually installing driver updates.

While Windows Update will make sure that most of your drivers are up to date, there are instances where it becomes necessary to download and install a driver manually. It’s not a difficult process, but as some Windows 10 users have discovered, there is a bug that can make it impossible to install a custom driver. You will know your device has been affected if you see the following message: “A driver can’t load on this device.”

This stealth camera drone can follow you around on its own, and it’s down to $150

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Quadcopter drones are generally split into two different categories, low-cost recreational drones and high-priced drones with advanced features.
  • While drones in the latter category can easily cost $1,000 or more, they’re worth the expense for people with a real need.
  • That said, there are some affordable options with advanced features you would normally have to pay a premium for, and the Potensic D58 Drone with 1080P Camera on Amazon is a perfect example.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When it comes to camera drones, a lot of people think they only have two options: pay top dollar to get a drone with a high-quality camera and killer features, or get a cheap toy just to play around with. What you might not realize, however, is that there are some models that offer a fantastic balance between feature set and affordability.

The Potensic D58 Drone with 1080P Camera is one of our favorite options that fit this description. You get a wonderfully sleek design that’s black and stealth, good battery life, long-range Wi-Fi, GPS-assisted automatic return with one touch of a button, and so much more. On top of all that, it has a crystal clear 1080p camera and an awesome feature called “Follow Me.” Set the drone to Follow Me mode and it will track your movement and automatically follow you while filming. Think of all the awesome videos you can make with a feature like that!

We’ve seen the Potensic D58 Drone with 1080P Camera on Amazon for as much as $199.99, but right now you’ll find it on sale for $179.99. But there’s also a $30 coupon you can clip, which means you’ll only pay $149.99 if you snag one before the sale ends.

Potensic D58, FPV Drone with 1080P Camera, 5G WiFi HD Live Video, GPS Auto Return, RC Quadcopte…: $149.99 (use code L6YD5BDS by 2/2)

Here’s a great review from the Amazon page that sums up the experience very well:

First, let’s get the obvious thing out of the way. Potensic D58 is a $199 drone. You cannot compare it to DJI drones that cost between $600 and $1,600. It won’t fly as well, have the same stability, construction, and robustness, or come with a camera that produces fine resolution images or video. Now that you set your expectations accordingly, let’s actually look at what this drone does well.

In my opinion, this drone is an excellent choice for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money learning how to fly a drone. For $199 you get a pretty close experience of what it’s like to fly a more high-end drone like a DJI Mavic Pro. The controls and UI are very similar, the drone is easy to set up and everything connects to each other surprising quickly and with very little fuss. So sure, it doesn’t have the motor strength to fly in stronger winds and the camera and stabilization are not the best, but that’s not the point. Instead of risking a $1,000 drone to teach yourself or your kid how to fly, you now have a pretty good starter drone that can be operated straight out of the case in just a few minutes.

Some other specifics worth mentioning. The battery life is about what you’d expect at this price point. You’ll get about 15 minutes at most on a single battery, less if the motors are working harder in stronger wind. My unit came with 2 batteries. The camera is not stabilized using a 3-axis stabilization gimbal found in more expensive DJI products. Instead, it’s suspended in a flexible plastic housing that will not always result in smooth video. Again, I think if you’re considering something at this price point photo and video quality are not likely to be high on the priority list. Lastly, the drone is small – it looks like 3/5 scale model of DJI Phantom and packs very easily into the provided case which itself is very compact. It’s light and easy to carry around.

I own two higher-end DJI drones and the Potensic D58 will be the drone that my daughter will be using to learn how to fly. I feel comfortable that this drone will help her learn the basics of flying without the risk of damaging a far more expensive unit. Keep your expectations reasonable and Potensic may serve you very well.
