Everyone loves how these Wuhan kids reacted to the coronavirus quarantine

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • In response to the quarantine implemented in Wuhan, China — the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak that’s now spread around the world — schoolkids there had a brilliant response.
  • They bombarded an app called DingTalk that was meant to help them continue school remotely with bad reviews. Why? Hoping that the flood of reviews would cause the app to be taken offline.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of those bits of wisdom you hear especially from anyone who travels frequently is about how people, by and large, are the same wherever you go. People want to live in safe communities, they love their families — and schoolkids, basically everywhere, will stage quiet rebellions against the strictures of the classroom. Whether they live in Witchita or Wuhan, the Chinese city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak that’s now spread around the world.

A new report in the London Review of Books paints a compelling picture of what life has been like in the quarantined city, and it includes one eye-opening detail about how schoolkids there have reacted to the quarantine: In short, they bombarded the mobile app that they were given to use for their schoolwork, in lieu of physically going to school, with negative reviews. Hoping that would get the app killed, and then voila! No more app, no more school. Brilliant, right?

Space lettuce is just like Earth lettuce, NASA says

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A lettuce-growing experiment on the International Space Station yielded produce that was just as nutritious as its counterpart grown back on Earth. The lettuce, which was grown in three batches in the mid-2010s, has been the subject of research aimed at determining in space-grown foods are any different — or perhaps even dangerous — in comparison to the foods we’re used to.

If mankind is ever going to be capable of traveling deep into space, visiting or even colonizing other worlds, knowing what foods to grow there will be vital. Determining how space affects the growth of plants is important, but it’s even more crucial when you’re planning on actually eating those plants. Thus, the lettuce experiment was born.

Interview: Meet ‘Black Panther’ star Winston Duke, who just made the jump to Netflix

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Black Panther star Winston Duke has become a familiar face thanks to his roles in some of the biggest movies of the past couple of years, from Black Panther to two Avengers titles as well as Jordan Peele’s Us.
  • You can see him starting this weekend in his first Netflix movie, the Mark Wahlberg-led cop drama Spenser Confidential which is now streaming on the service.
  • Duke sat down with us for a chat about everything from his acting process and the choices he’s made so far that have taken him from Marvel to the dominant streaming platform.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If an actor can be said to have whatever the cinematic version of the Midas touch is, Winston Duke seems as close as anyone to fitting that bill. He only has a handful of movie credits to his name so far, but not only have you probably seen all of them — they comprise most peoples’ ranking of the biggest and most successful big-screen blockbusters of the last couple of years. His breakout performance, for example, came as M’Baku, the fearsome warrior and tribal leader in 2018’s Black Panther who ends up playing a key role in the titular hero’s success. For many mainstream audiences, Duke’s appearance in that $1.3 billion addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was their first introduction to him, and he quickly built on that success by reprising the role in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Love ‘The Office’? Dish wants to pay fans $1,000 to binge the series

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Office, NBC’s hit workplace comedy that ran for nine seasons, celebrates the 15th anniversary of its US debut this month.
  • The series may be leaving Netflix at the end of this year, but fandom around it is as strong as ever.
  • As a result, Dish has decided to extend an invitation to The Office fans: Get paid $1,000 for bingeing 15 hours of the series.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

This anniversary kind of snuck up on me, but here’s a fun milestone to note for the TV fans out there. This month marks the 15th anniversary of the US debut of The Office, the workplace comedy shot in a mockumentary style which influenced so much of the TV that came after — everything from Parks and Rec to Modern Family. Plenty of others do that same thing of having the characters talk directly to the camera, as if to some unseen character, but it was, of course, The Office that really had the most fun with that format and over the course of nine seasons made us fall in love with an otherwise normal bunch of Pennsylvania-based office drones in the employ of a paper company.

The Office is one of those shows where, for the people who loved and still love it, they … really, really love it. From Facebook groups to trivia nights around the country to so much more, fandom around the show is still alive and well — so much so that Dish (yes, that Dish) has decided to tap into that deep well of appreciation for the show to offer what for some of you will sound like a dream gig. The main requirement: You can get paid $1,000 for … just binge-watching the show! Fifteen hours of it, to be exact.

Ditch the $600 Dyson and get this stick vacuum for $273, today only

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Dyson makes the most respected and desired cordless vacuum cleaners in the world, with a reputation for being powerful and efficient.
  • But Dyson’s cordless stick vacuums are also extremely expensive, and rival brands have made great strides with their own products.
  • The Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner has amassed thousands of 5-star ratings on Amazon because it offers a more affordable alternative to Dyson’s popular stick vacuums.
  • On Saturday, for one day only, the A11 Master is on sale at Amazon’s lowest price ever.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Dyson’s cordless stick vacuum first burst onto the scene years ago, people were blown away. Cordless vacuums were popular at the time, but they were weak and only ever used for quick, easy cleanups. Heavier-duty jobs needed a corded vacuum, and corded vacuums are always a hassle to use. That’s why Dyson’s powerful new stick vacuums got so popular so fast.

Back then, Dyson had no competition so people were willing to pay top dollar. Today, however, that’s no longer the case.

Head over to Amazon and you’ll see that the latest and greatest Dyson V11 Animal Cordless Vacuum Cleaner retails for a whopping $600. It’s on sale today, which is nice, but you’ll still have to cough up $539 if you want one. Years ago, it might have been worth the cost. But these days you can get a cordless stick vacuum that’s on par with the V11 for a small fraction of the price.

Tineco has made a name for itself in the cordless vacuum space by building powerful, lightweight stick vacuums that offer Dyson’s level of performance for much less money. Just this past week, in fact, we told you about a great sale on the Tineco Pure ONE S12 Plus, a novel new model with incredible power and never-before-seen features including a large digital display and capacitive touchscreen controls. That model is still quite pricey even on sale, which is understandable, but Amazon is running a different deal today that you’ll definitely want to check out.

Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, Ultra Powerful Suction, Mullti-Surface Cleanin…: $272.90

On Saturday, for one day only, Amazon has slashed the Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner to its lowest price ever. This killer cordless vacuum features exceptional power and suction, a great lightweight design, and dust and dirt bin that’s easy to empty, and a brush head designed to make quick work of pet hair. It also has LED lighting on the brush head, which is a bigger deal than you think. We did a test where we vacuumed with a Dyson and then ran an LED-equipped cordless vacuum over the same area — you would be shocked at how much the Dyson missed.

Tineco’s A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner retails for $399.99, but today on Amazon you can pick one up for just $272.90, the lowest price ever. Don’t miss this great deal.

‘Greyhound’ and all the new trailers you need to watch

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Onward opens this weekend. Pixar’s newest animated feature is a fantasy story set in our present-day world.
  • There’s just no time for the No Time to Die premiere in April, and you can blame the coronavirus outbreak for that.
  • Tom Hanks returns to World War II, but this time around, it’s a naval battle where his character will have to save more than just a private. And Greyhound is just one of this week’s brand new movie trailers.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus epidemic will get a lot worse before it gets better, and that will significantly impact everyday life. Attending crowded events, like a movie premiere, isn’t advised in hot zones, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying new releases if there aren’t any cases in your area. Even so, there’s no doubt that the entire movie industry will be hurt this year, and the first proof of that is already here. The next Bond movie was postponed to November, which is a seven-month delay for one of the highly anticipated films of the year.

Not all movies will be delayed, however, and this weekend brings us Disney’s new animated feature. Onward already has a good recipe for success. It’s a Pixar film, it has a great cast, and it’s got an interesting premise. This movie isn’t set in the middle ages, as you might expect from a fantasy; instead, it all takes place in the present time. You know, unicorns, magic, and vans. Also out this weekend are First Cow and The Way Back.
