‘Space Force’ review: A solid Trump-era comedy that never once mentions you-know-who
- Netflix’s new Space Force show, co-created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell, debuts this Friday.
- In an interview with BGR, Daniels explained why he wanted to take this project on and make a TV show about the Trump administration’s real-world Space Force in the first place.
- The cast of Netflix’s new series includes John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, Noah Emmerich, and Ben Schwartz, in addition to Carell.
I have a theory about Greg Daniels’ approach to all the TV series he’s either created or had a hand in creating over the years, a theory that I came to believe even more strongly while watching episodes of his new Space Force series for Netflix that the streamer made available early for reviewers (ahead of its release on Friday).
Daniels, of course, has made a name for himself as a showrunner in charge of landmark TV comedies that have stuck to the tried-and-true half-hour format, which isn’t necessarily what you might regard as the provenance of great, enduring art, nor the kind of prestige TV that sends critics reeling. Somehow, though, shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation managed to pull off an admirable magic trick anyway — making millions of people care deeply about characters ranging from the bumbling manager of a paper supply company to an effervescent small-town government bureaucrat, all while hiding meaningful lessons about the human condition inside these otherwise frothy, lighthearted comedies.

Why is our galaxy’s black hole blinking at us?
- The black hole at the center of our galaxy is blinking at us, and scientists think they know why.
- In a new researcher paper, astronomers explain that a disk of material surrounding the black hole may be producing flashes due to “hot spots” that form within it.
- The research was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The Moon revolves around the Earth, Earth revolves around the Sun, and the Sun — along with everything else in our galaxy — revolves around a supermassive black hole that sits at the very center. It’s a dance that began long before we got here, but scientists are doing their best to make up for the lost time by explaining how black holes work, why they exist, and what they can teach us about the formation of the universe.
Now, researchers using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory in Chile have documented a puzzling phenomenon happening near the location of Sagittarius A*, the location at the heart of the Milky Way believed to be a black hole. It seems that the supermassive black hole is blinking in our direction.

‘Call of Duty: WWII’ will be free on PS Plus starting tomorrow
- Sony announced on Monday that Call of Duty: WWII will be one of the free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers in June.
- Typically, the monthly selection of games goes free on the first Tuesday of the month, but Call of Duty: WWII will be free to download for PS Plus subscribers starting this Tuesday.
- Sony says it will reveal additional details about the monthly lineup for June later this week.
Ever since Sony stopped giving away PS3 and Vita games as part of its monthly offering for PlayStation Plus users, the quality of the PS4 games has seemingly increased. That’s not to say that every month is a grand slam, but more often than not, PS4 owners who pay the monthly subscription fee for the service are rewarded with at least one major blockbuster title to add to their library. June is no different, as Sony announced on Monday that Call of Duty: WWII will be one of the free games for June. But there’s a twist: It will be free to download starting on Tuesday.
Traditionally, Sony announces the two free games near the end of the month, and then slashes the price to $0 for PS Plus users on the first Tuesday of the following month. Without any explanation, Sony announced just one of the two games on Monday, and revealed that it will be free from May 26th through July 6th.

Promising coronavirus vaccine might be delayed because not enough people are getting sick
- One of the coronavirus vaccine candidates that has shown encouraging results is the one being developed at Oxford, which could be ready for emergency use this September.
- However, researchers are running into a potential issue with testing, as there might not be enough COVID-19 cases in the UK to actually see if the vaccine works during the late stages of the human trial.
- Delays in research could lead to a postponed “launch” for the coronavirus drug, assuming it is actually effective and safe for humans.
If you’ve been following news about the evolution of the novel coronavirus pandemic, chances are that you’ve heard about Moderna, Oxford, CanSino, and BioNTech, which have all reached human trials with their coronavirus vaccine candidates, and have been featured in plenty of reports in the past few weeks. More than 100 labs are looking to develop coronavirus vaccines, and at least eight of them are in various phases of clinical trials.
Moderna and Oxford are easily the two most talked about vaccine candidates right now. The former made a partial announcement about human testing that raised some eyebrows, especially after word got out that several company officials executed pre-planned stock sales around the announcement. That doesn’t mean Moderna’s vaccine doesn’t work or won’t be ready in a potentially record time. It just paints the company in a less flattering light. The Oxford vaccine, on the other hand, might be deployed as soon as this September, with both Britain and the US having secured manufacturing capacity for the drug. However, the researchers might have to delay their vaccine because they’re running into a bizarre problem. Just as they’re recruiting more volunteers for the advanced phases of the research, there’s not enough COVID-19 to go around.

China is officially going to Mars
- China’s Mars mission is scheduled for July as the country ramps up its space exploration efforts
- Chinese space group CASC is sending an orbiter and rover to the Red Planet in the hopes of finding evidence of past or present life.
- China is also planning to build a space station and have its own astronauts on the Moon sooner rather than later.
It wasn’t all that long ago that China didn’t seem to care much about space. The country watched The US and Russia dominate space exploration for decades before truly throwing its hat into the ring. Now, following a mission schedule that has proceeded at a breakneck pace, China is poised to launch a new mission to Mars.
The country announced that it believes it will be ready to send its Mars mission skyward in July. Similar to NASA’s Mars missions, China will be sending a rover to the Martian surface in the hopes of uncovering some of the planet’s long-held secrets, including whether or not life has ever taken root there.

These are the most-watched TV shows in every state during the coronavirus pandemic
- Bingeing TV series is one of the most popular activities people are staying busy with during quarantines and the shelter-at-home period of the coronavirus pandemic.
- That inspired one site to track the most-watched TV shows in all 50 states.
- Most people are watching old favorites like Friends during the pandemic, according to CableTV.com
If you asked most Americans for a list of activities they’ve been doing the most often during the coronavirus pandemic so far, in this strange time of quarantines and social distancing, no question that streaming TV shows will be at or near the top of the list.
Despite scores of temporary production shutdowns, streamers like Netflix are still adding new series at a pretty regular clip, which is why among the most-watched TV shows on Netflix right now are series that it’s just added, like Sweet Magnolias (as well as new seasons of existing shows, like the just-added sophomore season of Dead To Me). Meanwhile, plenty of people are gravitating to old favorites as well, like Friends and The Office, as a new survey by CableTV.com of the most popular shows during the coronavirus pandemic reveals.

New study says vitamin D can’t prevent or treat coronavirus
- Vitamin D isn’t a magical novel coronavirus cure, researchers warn in a new study, saying that more research is required to establish a clear link between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 risks.
- The study advises against supplementing vitamin D intake beyond regular levels in an attempt to prevent or treat COVID-19.
- Researchers say that a balanced diet combined with exposure to sunlight could help with vitamin D intake. Professional help is also advised to address any vitamin D issues.
Researchers theorized in a recent study that vitamin D might help save the lives of patients infected with the novel coronavirus. At the time, we warned that the study had not been reviewed by other researchers and that it didn’t propose conclusions of an actual clinical trial where vitamin D would have been compared to a placebo. The researches didn’t measure vitamin D levels in COVID-19 patients either, looking instead at other patient data, and using other health parameters to determine the expected levels of vitamin D.
We also told you that you shouldn’t attempt to prevent or treat COVID-19 at home with vitamins or other health supplements that go viral on social media, and to follow guidelines from your doctor. Fast forward a few weeks, and a new study warns that high doses of vitamin D can’t prevent or treat COVID-19.

New renders show off updated design of the Galaxy Note 20+
- The design of Samsung’s unannounced Galaxy Note 20+ has been revealed in a new leak.
- Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) shared renders of the Galaxy Note 20+ on Monday, complete with the dimensions of the phone and the subtle design changes from the Galaxy Note 10+.
- Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20+ in August at a digital Unpacked event, but the novel coronavirus pandemic could potentially have an impact on the release date.
By all accounts, the Galaxy S20 series hasn’t exactly been breaking sales records since it launched earlier this year. Part of that can undoubtedly be blamed on the viral pandemic that interrupted the economies of every country on the planet, but the lack of major upgrades and the baffling decision not to release a more affordable Galaxy S20e model played a part as well. This puts even more pressure on the impending release of the Galaxy Note 20.
Last week, David Kowalski and Pigtou teamed up to give us our best look yet at what might be the final design of the Galaxy Note 20. The renders were said to be based on leaked CAD drawings, and showcased some of the ways that the design had changed when compared to the Galaxy Note 10. Now, a few days later, Pigtou is back with renders of the Galaxy Note 20+, but this time, Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) is behind them.

Las Vegas casinos and restaurants may reopen as early as next week
- If recent coronavirus data in Nevada proves promising, Las Vegas may open back up for business next Friday.
- Casino floors and restaurants at many resorts may reopen. Bars, clubs, and other types of live entertainment, however, will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
- Gamblers at casino tables can expect to see a host of new rules designed to keep cards and dice clean.
Las Vegas, a city typically overflowing with tourists at all hours of the night, has effectively been a ghost town since the city implemented strict quarantine measures back in March. Now, as many states begin to implement their plans to reopen, the place affectionately — or perhaps derisively — referred to as Sin City is poised to open back up for business on June 4.
According to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, the typically bustling Las Vegas strip is tentatively scheduled to reopen next Thursday, provided, of course, that the number of coronavirus cases doesn’t skyrocket unexpectedly. A final determination is set to be made this week so that officials can gauge updated coronavirus figures that encapsulate the Memorial Day weekend.

Astronomers spot a galaxy shaped like a donut, and it looks delicious
- Scientists found a donut-shaped galaxy hiding out 11 billion light-years from Earth.
- The galaxy is making stars at an incredibly fast pace.
- Researchers believe it got its shape due to a collision with another galaxy.
Well, it looks like astronomers have finally found the absolute best possible thing they could ever hope to find when gazing deep into the cosmos. No, I’m not talking about alien life or the fountain of youth. Both of those things pale in comparison to the discovery recently revealed in a paper published in Nature Astronomy. Scientists found… a donut galaxy.
Okay, so maybe it’s just a big “cosmic ring of fire,” but it sure looks like a donut. And if it were a donut, I bet it would be absolutely delicious, especially if you dipped it in the Milky Way. (Get it?)
