Obama pushes for FCC to scrap Internet ‘fast lanes’ plan, reclassify ISPs as utilities

Despite the drubbing he and his party took last week in the midterm elections, Barack Obama has decided to come out swinging on the issue of net neutrality. In a statement released on Monday, Obama reemphasized his commitment to preserving net neutrality and offered up his own plan that would reclassify Internet service providers as utilities under Title II of the 1996 Telecommunications Act. The surprise statement was an implicit rebuke of current Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler, who this year proposed allowing ISPs to create Internet “fast lanes” that would let them charge content providers more money to ensure their traffic got delivered more quickly than traffic on the “standard” Internet.

Home Depot blames Windows for record hack, rushes out to buy Macs and iPhones afterward

Home Depot has confirmed in recent months that it too has been the victim of a complex malware attack, with hackers reportedly stealing more than 56 million credit cards and over 53 million emails in a record cyber heist. The Wall Street Journal has learned more details about the attack, revealing that hackers used a Windows machine as a point of entry, from which they were able to spread the malware and collect customer data. Interestingly, one of the first moves Home Depot made after learning about the attack was to purchase new, secure, MacBooks and iPhones for execs.

Apple Pay is already having a significant impact at one major retailer

If you’re looking for more evidence that Apple Pay is already a big success, look no further than a recent estimate put out by Mike Dudas, the cofounder of mobile payments rewards startup Button and a former executive at Google Wallet. Using data from both regulatory filings and from Whole Foods CIO Jason Buechel, Dudas estimates that Apple Pay has accounted for roughly 1% of all transactions at Whole Foods since its launch three weeks ago.

You’ll have a hard time finding a Nexus 6 in T-Mobile stores at launch

However, Android Police reveals that initial inventory will be limited, on par with the initial Google Play Store and Motorola launches, and customers might not be able to find a Nexus 6 to test, and potentially buy, in certain T-Mobile locations.
