Face masks with electric fields might be able to kill coronavirus on contact
- Coronavirus face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) can’t destroy the new pathogen on contact, but researchers are looking at ways for fabrics to neutralize its infectivity.
- Researchers who have used electric fields to create electroceutical bandages that can prevent infections while treating wounds think the same technique could be used against the novel coronavirus.
- The researchers were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of such fabrics against a known coronavirus in a lab, suggesting that future PPE products could benefit from the technology.
The CDC says that you’re less likely to pick up the novel coronavirus from surfaces, but there’s plenty of evidence that shows the life-threatening pathogen travel easily through the air and can stick on surfaces for hours or days. We’ve seen plenty of scary videos that show how easily the virus spreads from human to human, proving how vital social distancing is. The same clips indicate that the use of PPE, such as face masks, is key during the pandemic. But you have to use the mask correctly and avoid touching it. The virus can survive for days on the outside and inside of face masks as well. You should avoid touching your face while you’re outdoors.
Scientists are already studying technologies that might help them apply an outer layer to face masks that would kill the coronavirus on contact. Now, some researchers think they could apply an electric current to the exterior of a face mask to destroy the virus’s ability to infect cells.

Leak points to exciting new features for Apple’s next-gen AirPods
- A new leak claims that a future model of Apple’s AirPods will have ambient light sensors that might be used to monitor the health of the user in real-time.
- According to the leak, Apple will incorporate these sensors into AirPods within the next two years.
- Apple was previously rumored to be working on health monitoring features for the AirPods.
Despite the ongoing threat of the novel coronavirus, Apple is having an especially busy 2020. In March, both the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air lines were refreshed. Then in April, the second-generation iPhone SE made its long-awaited debut. May isn’t quite over yet, but we’ve already seen a new 13-inch MacBook Pro that features a redesigned Magic Keyboard and twice the storage space of its predecessor. And that’s to say nothing of the iPhone 12 line set to arrive this fall, which is said to be made up of four distinct models, all with OLED displays and 5G support.
One of the few product lines we haven’t heard much about is the company’s premium headphones. Apple introduced its AirPods Pro last fall, and although rumors about new models and hardware updates have cropped up online every few weeks, the timing of the next AirPods launch has yet to be nailed down. Based on new reports from DigiTimes, that might have something to do with the major upgrades Apple is planning for the product.

Remdesivir helps, but it’s not the coronavirus miracle cure people were hoping for
- Coronavirus drug remdesivir was called the standard of care for COVID-19 patients in late April when Dr. Anthony Fauci announced the early results of an extensive study.
- Fauci said the drug can speed up recovery, although the COVID-19 treatment did not affect mortality. The drug should be combined with other therapies in a future study.
- The preliminary study has now finally been published, revealing that remdesivir isn’t the coronavirus miracle cure that some may have hoped it’d be.
The world has been battling the novel coronavirus for more than five months now, with more than 5.5 million people having been infected during this time. As of Monday morning, nearly 348,000 people died of COVID-19 complications, and millions of people are out of work as a result of the severe social distancing measures put in place around the world since March. All those sacrifices were not in vain, as we’ve seen tremendous progress from the medical community during that time. More than 2.27 million people have already recovered from COVID-19, and doctors have a much better understanding of how the SARS-CoV-2 spreads, how it infects the body, and how it kills. They also know it can be neutralized, and plenty of new therapies are being developed, including drugs repurposed for the new infection as well as new treatments developed just to combat coronavirus.
There’s no magical cure, however, and only one of these promising drugs has been upgraded to “standard” use in COVID-19. Remdesivir is the medicine in question, a drug that Dr. Anthony Fauci lauded in late April when he explained the results of a massive remdesivir study whose conclusions were very promising. That study was finally published online on Friday, and the results are indeed encouraging. However, just as Fauci cautioned back in April, it’s not all good news.

These are the places and situations to avoid if you don’t want to catch coronavirus
- All 50 states in the US have now reopened to some degree, after more than two months of gradually tightening lockdowns and restrictions as the coronavirus’ US toll has worsened.
- There’s fear among public health experts that Americans’ behavior over the Memorial Day weekend could cause a surge in new COVID-19 cases.
- Here are the places and situations to avoid to keep yourself safe from the coronavirus.
As the coronavirus’ US toll has worsened over the last couple of months, we’ve slowly begun to learn more about this virus that has infected more than 1.6 million people in the US and killed almost 98,000 people as of Monday morning. That’s according to the latest grim statistics from Johns Hopkins University, which also don’t speak to the more than 36 million people who’ve been thrown out of work because of the economic devastation caused by the virus.
Since the onset of the pandemic in the US, we’ve also gradually learned what actions we can take to minimize its spread — as well as our chances of catching the COVID-19 virus. That includes things like regularly washing our hands, wearing a face mask when we’re in public, and practicing social distancing.

Former FDA chief says reopening now will lead to more suffering from coronavirus
- Former FDA chief Scott Gottlieb says the coronavirus pandemic is not contained, and that reopening will inevitably lead to more hospitalizations and suffering.
- Some US states are beginning to loosen their restrictions and are already seeing an increase in the number of new cases flooding hospitals.
- Social distancing, mask-wearing, and other preventative measures will only protect us up to a point if we choose to abandon stay-at-home orders and lockdown measures.
While some areas of the United States are ever so slowly returning to a sense of “normal” in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, it’s already clear that we’re jumping the gun. Some states are still seeing increasing numbers of coronavirus cases on a week-over-week basis, and deaths continue to mount. Now, Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, says what we’ve all been thinking: COVID-19 isn’t done with us yet.
Gottlieb made his remarks during an interview on Face the Nation, stating that the virus “isn’t contained yet.” He added, “That doesn’t mean we can’t go out and start doing things, get back to some semblance of a normal life, but we need to do things differently. We need to define a new normal.”

With so many people working from home these days, there’s a good chance you had to dig up some crummy old keyboard that barely lasts for a month on a charge. Here’s how long coronavirus patients are contagious, according to multple studies
- The coronavirus recovery time might not coincide with the period a COVID-19 patient is still contagious, a new study indicates.
- Researchers from Singapore say a patient isn’t infectious 11 days after the onset of symptoms, citing similar research from other countries.
- The findings could change COVID-19 case management policies for patients who keep testing positive for several weeks after the onset of symptoms, and for patients who are treating themselves at home.
Containing the novel coronavirus is essential for reopening economies, and it’s only possible with good testing and contact tracing policies that can reduce the rate of infection. Knowing how long a person is infectious is also a key detail for authorities, as they can better manage their resources and caseload. New data from Singapore indicates that a COVID-19 patient is no longer contagious after 11 days, even if his or her PCR tests still return positive results.

Amazon slashed up to $450 off the Microsoft Surface Pro X, today only
- The Microsoft Surface Pro X is the company’s latest and greatest Windows 10 device, and it’s down to its lowest price ever on Amazon for Memorial Day 2020.
- The entry-level Surface Pro X with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD typically sells for $1,000, but on Monday it’s on sale for only $749.99.
- Double the amount of SSD storage and you’ll save even more — the 256GB Surface Pro X that typically sells for $1,300 is only $849.99 while supplies last.
For so many years, Windows laptops were big clunky devices that people bought because they needed one, not because they actually wanted one. They all pretty much looked the same, with boxy black or dark gray cases. If you needed a new laptop, all you had to worry about was picking a screen size and a processor/RAM/storage combo that met your needs. They all looked the same and ran the same software, so why bother digging any deeper?
Now, that has totally changed. Most people agree that the introduction of the MacBook Air in 2008 was the catalyst because it made Windows laptop vendors realize that a notebook computer could be more than just a thick black rectangle. “Ultrabooks” began flooding the market and now, in 2020, we have more variety than ever before. In fact, not all Windows laptops are even traditional laptops anymore these days, as evidenced by the hot new Microsoft Surface Pro X.
The Surface Pro X packs a full-fledged touchscreen laptop experience into a stunningly sleek tablet. It runs Windows 10 Home just like any other Windows laptop you would buy for personal use, and it also packs up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of SSD storage. All that in a tablet that’s just 7.3mm thin — that’s 12% thinner than an iPhone 11!
The Surface Pro X starts at $1,000 and goes all the way up to $1,800, but all four available models are discounted right now at Amazon. The stars of the show are the 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro X and the 256GB Microsoft Surface Pro X, however, because they’re included in Amazon’s big one-day Gold Box deal on Monday. You’ll save $250 if you pick up the 128GB model today, or you can double the SSD storage and get the 256GB model for just $849.99. That’s a massive $450 discount!

This new coronavirus stimulus plan is so much better than $1,200 checks
- Congress has already taken a series of extraordinary steps to provide unprecedented relief like direct payments to Americans as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, but momentum for a new stimulus bill seems to be stalled at the moment.
- Billionaire Mark Cuban, meanwhile, has tweeted out a stimulus idea of his own that we think might be one of the most creative yet.
- It calls for a massive federal jobs program, as well as new direct payments to Americans that include a “spend it or lose it” requirement.
At this stage of the coronavirus pandemic, more than two months on from the outbreak first exploding in the US, there are a few things we can say about the crisis with certainty.
For one, this has been a fast-moving catastrophe with a wide scale of destruction, in terms of both public health and economic pain, like nothing the US has seen in more than a generation. Another is the fact that, given the more than 36 million people who have been thrown out of work because of it, it’s probably a certainty that a new stimulus bill will start making the rounds after the Memorial Day holiday. The question is what form it will take, following other coronavirus relief measures that have included direct payments to most Americans of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, along with $500 per eligible child — an unprecedented injection of financial relief from the federal government to blunt some of the economic shock of the crisis.

Today’s the day to finally buy AirPods Pro or AirPods 2 thanks to all-time low prices at Amazon
- There are thousands of great deals out there for Memorial Day 2020, but Amazon’s big sales on Apple’s wildly popular AirPods Pro and AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case might just be the very best of the bunch.
- AirPods Pro are Apple’s only wireless earphones with active noise cancellation and sound isolation, and they’re on sale right now at the new all-time low price of $227.99.
- AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case get an even deeper discount from $199 to just $149.98, beating Amazon’s previous low price from Black Friday last year by about $10.
- In addition to those deals, Apple’s entry-level AirPods 2 model is down to its all-time low price as well — just $129.98!
If you’re in the market for new true wireless earbuds, Memorial Day 2020 is definitely the day you’ve been waiting for. Why? Because both of Apple’s best-selling AirPods models are on sale today on Amazon at their lowest prices of all time!
Now, we know what you’re thinking… Apple’s various AirPods models have been discounted on and off for months now on Amazon, so what’s so shocking about Monday’s big sale? The answer is pretty simple, actually. It’s obviously true that AirPods and AirPods Pro have gotten a bunch of discounts over the past few months, so seeing another discount hit Amazon isn’t all that crazy. What’s crazy about this deal is the amount of money that Amazon slashed off the price of the AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case.
Since the beginning of the year, Amazon has been offering this particular version of Apple’s AirPods on and off for $169. That’s a great price and it’s $30 less than what you would spend on them from the Apple store right now, but it’s still $10 more than the $159 that Amazon was charging during Black Friday last year. Now, however, AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case can be had for just $149.98. That’s a new all-time low price, and it’s crazy that it’s available right now while Amazon still isn’t fully focused on shipping nonessentials. And unlike most nonessential products, these earphones ship out ASAP, so you’ll have them in your hands and in your ears next week.
Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case: $149.98
Of note, many people will still want active noise cancellation despite this great deal, and you should know that Apple’s insanely popular AirPods Pro true wireless noise cancelling earbuds are still available right now at Amazon at the lowest price ever thanks to an additional discount that’s applied at checkout. They’re also shipping out as soon as possible, and they’ll arrive in most locations around the country next week.
Apple AirPods Pro: $227.99
Last but certainly not least, Apple’s entry-level AirPods 2 model is on sale as well right now at its all-time lowest price. $129.98 is a great price for these cord-free earbuds, but truth be told, you would have to be a bit crazy to buy these for $130 when you can upgrade to the model with the wireless charging case for just $20.
