This is the most important and inspirational personal announcement Tim Cook has ever made
Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday made a surprising announcement in an opinion piece on Bloomberg Businessweek, which is very much in line with his many public notes in the recent past about diversity at the workplace. “While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me,” Cook said in the essay.

Samsung’s Q3 profit nosedives, stock soars
Investors sent Samsung shares soaring more than 4.5% on Thursday as the company reported dismal third-quarter earnings… that were thankfully less dismal than analysts were expecting. In a world where the high end of the smartphone market is being squeezed by more capable mid-range and low-end phones, Samsung’s response has been to flood the market with cheaper low-margin phones. How did that work out? In the third quarter, Samsung’s operating profit plunged 60% on year to $3.9 billion and its revenue slid 20% to about $44.6 billion.

Microsoft smartwatch is official… but it’s more of an affordable fitness band
Just as previously rumored, Microsoft is also interested in the wearable space, and the company just launched a smart device for your wrist that’s supposed to offer health-related features at an affordable price. The Microsoft Band is not a smartwatch, but rather a fitness… well, band, that’s supposed to let users track workout data.

Sick of constant media bashing, Verizon funds a tech news site where the NSA and net neutrality don’t exist
It’s hard being Verizon sometimes. The poor little wireless carrier and Internet service provider often gets a bum rap in the tech press for its controversial actions on net neutrality and on enabling the American government’s surveillance programs. To combat these nattering negative ninnies in the media, Verizon has decided to take action and bankroll its own news site where none of those nasty sorts of stories will ever pop up.

Walgreens will happily take the Apple Pay customers that CVS and Rite Aid don’t want
Although CVS and Rite Aid both shut off the NFC payment receptors over the weekend, you can still use services such as Apple Pay at Walgreens, which just happens to be one of those two pharmacies’ main competitors. And don’t think that Walgreens doesn’t know this — its official Twitter account on Tuesday sent out a message letting everyone know that all iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users can “use Apple Pay today at any one of our stores.” The company also helpfully posted a link showing you how to find all the Walgreens stores located nearest you, although that link also happened to be for Apple Maps, so you may want to double check with another service before making your drive.

Apple’s Retina 5K iMac seems pricey at $2,499 – here’s why it’s really a killer deal
Obviously not everyone can afford to spend $2,500 on a large monitor with a resolution of 4K or higher. But if you do feel like throwing that kind of cash around at a beautiful display, Apple’s new iMac with a Retina 5K display really is a killer deal. We mention this because 9to5Mac on Wednesday flagged an impressive looking LG 4K monitor that measures in at 31 inches and costs the exact same price as the Retina 5K iMac… but it’s also just a monitor and not an all-in-one desktop computer.
