iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate: Apple examining issue with ‘insane’ amount of detail, replacements promised
Apple isn’t having a particularly good week, even though on Monday the company announced it broke all past iPhone launch sales records with the bigger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets. Soon after that, an unexpected design flaw affecting some iPhone 6 Plus buyers came to light – the bigger phone can be bent when inside pockets – also known as #Bendgate on social networks, and then Apple released a buggy iOS 8.0.1 update that affected some crucial features, including cellular connectivity and Touch ID sensor.

Apple still rules back-to-school
During the back-to-school shopping period (July 4th through Labor Day week), Apple saw notebook sales rise 16% year over year as customers clamored for the latest MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros, according to research firm NPD Group. Even more impressive is how well sales of Apple notebooks did in the final three weeks of the period, rising 27% year over year. That growth allowed Apple to capture 26.8% of the unit device share.
Overall, Mac OS-based products rose 14% year over year, partially helped by the recent price cuts and refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks Apple has instituted in recent months.

Apple admits to ruining your new iPhone 6, says iOS 8.0.2 is coming soon
Trying to fix some of the existing issues in iOS 8, Apple on Wednesday released a fast iOS 8.0.1 update that came with some unexpected surprises: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who have installed it have quickly discovered their devices would no longer connect to their carrier of choice, and that the Touch ID sensor wasn’t functioning anymore. Since then, Apple has pulled the iOS 8.0.1 update, publishing a special support page on its website, which reveals that the company is looking to release iOS 8.0.2 in the coming days to fix the new issues.

Google’s next Nexus smartphone might be a bigger version of the amazing Moto X
Motorola’s 2014 Moto X model may be considered the best Android phone currently available in stores by some people, but there’s a way the handset can get even better. 9to5Google has learned from sources familiar with the matter that the Motorola Shamu – the codename for the Nexus 6, or Nexus X as it’s been called lately – will be Google’s first phablet model, featuring a 5.92-inch display. Furthermore, the device is “basically going to be a scaled up second-generation Moto X with minor tweaks to make the larger screen easier to use.”

Here’s a simple way to spy on your kid’s iPhone activity
Spying on smartphones is a hot topic nowadays, following the recent celebrity nudes leaks, but also Apple’s and Google’s independent commitments to better protecting personal data on mobile devices. However, there’s one kind of spying that some smartphone users might actually be interested in, and that’s keeping tabs on their children who are already using smartphones, especially younger kids who have been given a smartphone of their own. Windows 7’s slow sunset continues with October 31st deadline
As PC users anxiously await the release of Windows 9, many are beginning to worry about the latest impending deadline for Windows 7. On the Windows lifecycle fact sheet, Microsoft notes that it will no longer provide copies of Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium or Ultimate to third-party manufacturers for inclusion on new consumer PCs.

Cook: iPhone 6 month ‘for the record books,’ extended days off awarded to Apple staff
Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday morning sent a memo to all Apple employees, 9to5Mac reports, praising their work that lead to the huge iPhone 6 launch that made September “one for the record books.” The exec also revealed that all Apple employees will receive more days off during Thanksgiving than they normally get in most years.

Despite brutal new attack from Apple, Samsung says mobile business will recover
In a remarkably brief report, Reuters noted some comments made by Samsung Electronics President D.J. Lee during a press conference on Wednesday morning in South Korea. According to the report, the Samsung executive is confident that Samsung’s mobile business will recover quickly thanks to the company’s “strong fundamentals and technological prowess.” Samsung’s profit plummeted to a two-year low in the second quarter as mobile phone sales continued to slow.
