%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Galaxy S20 now available for preorder, which means you’ve still got a few days to wait before you can get your hands on one. But reviewers have been testing the new phones for quite a while, with a special focus on the Ultra model, which includes the best Samsung camera system to date, and also the biggest battery.

Unsurprisingly, the first speed tests are also here, and there’s one comparison we know you want to see. The newest Android flagships are always stacked up against the latest iPhones, and the same goes for the S20 Ultra. The Galaxy S20 is Samsung’s response to the iPhone 11, so the Ultra is being pitted against the iPhone 11 Pro Max in the following real-life speed test. The result won’t be a surprise to anyone familiar with these handsets.

Tim Cook talks coronavirus, FBI dispute, ‘Friends’ reunion, and more at Apple shareholder meeting

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple held its annual shareholder meeting earlier today, an event that allows shareholders to ask Apple executives direct questions and vote on all types of issues pertinent to the company’s day-to-day business.

While nothing particularly groundbreaking transpired at today’s meeting, Tim Cook did touch on a number of interesting and wide-ranging issues. For instance, when the issue of TV programming was broached, Cook essentially said that Apple remains solely focused on original content, which is to say we won’t ever see Apple pay top dollar for familiar franchises like Friends or The Office.

Coronavirus outbreak reaches scary new milestone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If there’s one topic that has the entire world’s attention at the moment it’s the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. Originating in China in December, the spread was initially slow, but things have changed dramatically in the weeks since its discovery. Now, with health officials around the world scrambling to respond, the outbreak has crossed a scary new milestone.

As NPR reports, new reports of confirmed viral infections inside China — which have been massive compared to elsewhere in the world in recent weeks — are now being outpaced by reports from outside of the country. That’s an important and potentially frightening development since it could signal a shift from China alone seeing the largest threat from the outbreak to COVID-19 becoming a true worldwide pandemic.

iOS 13.4 will in all likelihood be the final big numbered update for iOS 13 before the launch of iOS 14, but even this late in the cycle, the beta releases are still providing us with surprising looks at the future of Apple’s mobile software. For example, when the first beta for iOS 13.4 rolled out earlier this month, a new API called CarKey was discovered which will seemingly allow iPhone and Apple Watch users to unlock their cars with their Apple devices. And now, as the third beta rolls out, an even more exciting unannounced feature has been uncovered.

What’s hot on Netflix right now? It depends on which list you check

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Netflix really, really wants you to know what’s hot on the massive streamer right now, because thanks to its announcement earlier this week about the launch of a new Top 10 list that will serve as yet another row of content you see on your Netflix homepage, there’s now no less than three different rankings that Netflix provides for what’s popular on the service right now.

There’s the row of content labeled “Popular on Netflix.” Right below that right, at least in the configuration within my app right now (because it seems to change semi-regularly), is a row labeled “Trending Now.” And then, as we alluded to a moment ago, there’s the new Top 10 ranking — if you tap from the main menu into either “TV Shows” or “Movies,” halfway or so down the page you’ll see a new row that identifies the 10 most popular shows or movies (depending on which section you’re in) for the US that day. It will, per Netflix, be updated daily and include both Netflix originals as well as shows and films that the streamer licenses. Got all that? Confused yet?

The most mysterious MCU Phase 4 movie might introduce an unexpected superhero

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be bigger than anything Marvel has done so far, and that’s because it now has the luxury of providing more context for the main stories with the help of TV series that will stream exclusively on Disney+. We’re getting eight TV series and six regular movies, which means we’re in for a serious upgrade when it comes to MCU adventures. The previous phases had a rather strict schedule of three movies per year, and we only had two TV series that tied into them, including Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD, which had little impact on the overall Infinity Saga impact. The movies, however, will continue to play a massive role in the overall plot going forward. MCU Phase 4 will kick off with Black Widow in May, and we’ve come to learn many details about some other upcoming movies thanks to a series of leaks from insiders — and thanks to Marvel’s own revelations. Now, a new rumor now tells us that the most mysterious MCU Phase 4 film of all might be even more important than we thought.

This $36 wake up light alarm clock is just as good as the $100 Philips model people rave about

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Have you ever had someone talk to you about the Philips HF3520/60 Wake-Up Light Therapy Alarm Clock with Colored Sunrise Simulation and Sunset Fading Night Light? It’s practically like having a conversation about religion. There are so many people out there who swear by it and they can’t imagine life without it. On top of that, it has had such a profound effect on them that they want you to get one too, so you can experience it for yourself. Well, if you want one, you can save $10 off the $105 retail price if you snag one today on Amazon. That’s still pretty pricey though, so let’s talk about what this gadget does and why you should check out a much less expensive alternative.

Philips HF3520/60 Wake-Up Light Therapy Alarm Clock with Colored Sunrise Simulation and Sunset…: $93.98

In a nutshell, the idea with wake up light alarm clocks is to wake you up slowly and gently instead of shocking you awake with a blaring buzzer or some other grating sound. The built-in light simulates a natural sunrise, starting with a red hue at 10% brightness and increasing to 100% with a yellow hue just like real sunlight. If that’s not enough, there are also a bunch of built-in natural alarm sounds to help give you an extra nudge and wake you up.

Believe it or not, using a device like this instead of a traditional alarm clock or your smartphone isn’t just about having a cool gizmo to play with. You really do wake up feeling better rested and you have more energy during the day. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t get one and experience it for myself. But I didn’t cough up $100 for the Philips model, I picked up the Fitfort Wake Up Light Alarm Clock, a best-selling model on Amazon with a 4.6-star rating and more than 1,100 reviews. It’s fantastic, and it’s on sale right now for just $36.

Wake Up Light Alarm Clock – Light Alarm Clock with Sunrise/Sunset Simulation Dual Alarms and Sn…: $36.09

Here’s what Fitfort has to say about it, from the Amazon page:

Before bedtime, the light will gradually dim from 100% to 0% with music, it helps you sleep better. 97% of users found it easier and more comfortable to get up in the morning with this light alarm clock
  • 【Personalized Alarm Settings】Uneasy to get up from your bed? Upgraded snooze function gives you an extra 9 minutes of sleep after your original alarm. 20 levels of brightness allow you to adjust the wake up light to the proper brightness at bedtime. What makes you unexpected is that there is a USB charging port behind this alarm clock which can charge your phone or other devices
  • 【Dual Alarm Clock Function】Considering you may have different needs for the alarm, the upgraded sunrise alarm clock provides two sets of alarms — One for you and the other for your spouse without affecting each other. And it supports two alarms at the same time, one for the working day and the other for the weekends
  • 【FM Radio Clock】Want to wake up and hear your favorite music or even the day’s news? This radio alarm clock supports manual/auto searching radio stations and automatically saving the radio stations to the playlist (max 60 stations). It can also be used as a regular radio throughout the day. Moreover, the radio can also be set as an alarm ringtone. Please note: spreading the wires will improve signal

The clock supports manual/automatic switching of the light between yellow, red, purple, blue, indigo, green and cyan. This wake up light can be also used as a reading light, bedside lamp, atmosphere light.

Xbox Series X will prove cloud gaming isn’t the death of home consoles

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the months before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched, countless pundits and analysts declared that the era of home consoles was coming to an end. With the cloud, there’d be no need for unsightly black boxes sitting beneath our TVs, taking up space and sucking up power. And yet, seven years later, Microsoft and Sony are both gearing up to launch new consoles, and rather than replace them, the cloud might extend their lifespan.

Speaking with Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price in a recent episode of The AIAS Game Maker’s Notebook, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer discussed a wide variety of topics. The one we’re going to focus on is how the cloud will affect not only the upcoming Xbox Series X, but the future of gaming in the decades to come.

8 deals on travel essentials you should never be without

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Relax for a moment while I tell you a short story. I once traveled across the country for a friend’s wedding. When I got to my hotel room, I unpacked and saw that despite my best efforts — i.e., folding and unfolding everything no less than 12 different times — the outfit I planned to wear was full of wrinkles. I took out the iron and ironing board from the hotel closet, set both up, and started to iron. Wouldn’t you know it? The iron had some kind of gross yellow sediment in the water reservoir, and it ruined my dress the moment I touched it.

That, my dear friends, is why I always pack my Steamfast SF-717 Mini Steam Iron AND my Masteam Steamer for Clothes anytime I travel anywhere.

Those are two things that I learned the hard way never to travel without, but there are several other travel essentials you should always remember to pack. Among them is a good lint roller like the Scotch-Brite Lint Roller, which is especially necessary if you have any pets. I can’t tell you how much dog hair I have to roll off my clothes even if they’re freshly washed.

Unless you sleep like a rock, it’s also always a good idea to pack earplugs like Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs. Hotel walls can sometimes be paper-thin and the last thing you want is for excessive noise to keep you awake all night when you’ve got a busy day planned that starts bright and early in the morning. And speaking of noise, pick up the awesome TaoTronics TT-BH047 Active Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones while they’re on sale for just $25.99 (coupon code HDQX5Z9Y) to drown out all the noise on the airplane or the train.

There are a few more travel essentials you should never hit the road without, and you can see them all below.

A travel iron like the Steamfast SF-717 Mini Steam Iron so you don’t have any ironing mishaps… like me.

A good travel steamer like the Masteam Steamer for Clothes so you can smooth out your garments without scorching them with the crummy iron in your hotel room.

A good lint roller, like Scotch-Brite Lint Roller you can get for $4.70 per 2-pack.

Scotch-Brite Lint Roller, 2 Rollers: $4.70

Noise cancelling headphones, like the TaoTronics TT-BH047 Active Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones that are on sale right now for just $26.

Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs, because you never know when you’ll have noisy neighbors at the hotel.

The Anker PowerCore 13000 Portable Charger, so all your gear can charge while you travel.

And if you have an Apple watch, you definitely need the MQOUNY Portable Apple Watch Charger so you can charge on the go.

MQOUNY for Apple Watch Wireless Charger,Portable iWatch Charger Magnetic Wireless Charger 1000m…: $18.99

A Colgate Extra Clean Toothbrush — I hate to be wasteful, but a toothbrush is something you put in your mouth and you never clean it as well as you should. Don’t travel with your main toothbrush, use an extra one and toss it in the trash when it’s time to go home.

Apple just released iOS 13.4 beta 3 for the iPhone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple’s upcoming new iOS 13.4 software is the version new version of iOS 13 in quite some time that adds a few noteworthy new features. That makes sense, of course, since iOS 13 has been a bit messy so far. It’s nowhere near as bad as iOS 11 was two years ago, but iOS 13 has still been very buggy ever since it was first released back in September. It’s still quite buggy even to this day, but early iOS 13.4 betas have managed to squash a few of the most annoying bugs that are still lingering. On top of that, iOS 13.4 adds nifty new features like CarKey, iCloud Drive folder sharing, additional Memoji stickers, a new toolbar in the Mail app, new Siri commands, and an awesome new feature allowing developers to bundle iOS and Mac apps as a single purchase. Definitely check out our full rundown of the best new features in iOS 13.4 so far, and now Apple has just released a new version of the software, iOS 13.4 beta 3 for developers.
