Sony says 2K screens are a waste for smartphones, especially if they kill battery life
When you’re using a display that’s only around 5 inches, do you really need it to have a 2K resolution when a 1080p resolution will do just fine? Sony certainly doesn’t think so and in an interview with TrustedReviews, Sony director of Xperia marketing Calum MacDougall gives a very smart explanation for why it’s not chasing other smartphones when it comes to bumping up display resolutions: It’s just not worth it if it means sacrificing battery life.

Meet the Lumia 830, Microsoft’s most affordable flagship yet
Microsoft on Thursday unveiled a variety of new mobile devices at IFA 2014, just as expected, including the Nokia Lumia 830, described as the most affordable Windows Phone flagship yet. The device is expected to launch in September “around the world,” and retail for €330 in Europe (around $434) when purchased off-contract.

HTC unveils the Desire 820, a mid-range phone with the world’s best ‘selfie camera’
Just because a phone is midrange, that doesn’t mean it should be devoid of at least some high-end specifications. In the case of the new HTC Desire 820 that HTC unveiled on Thursday, that high-end specification just happens to be its 8-megapixel front-facing camera, which gives it the best “selfie camera” of any other phone on the market. For comparison’s sake, consider that even Samsung’s beastly Galaxy Note 4 can only boast a 3.7-megapixel front-facing camera.

Microsoft’s ‘selfie phone’ is finally here, and comes in two flavors
In addition to the Nokia Lumia 830, the most affordable Windows Phone flagship yet according to Microsoft, the company on Thursday also took the wraps off the previously rumored selfie phone, which will actually come in two flavors, including the Lumia 730 and Lumia 735.

The Movpak, which is currently raising money on Kickstarter, is an interesting two-in-one product that some commuters will love: An electrical skateboard that offers a range of up to 9 miles and a speed of 15mph and a backpack that stores the board while not in use. What if the iWatch is just as curvy as the Gear S?
A few days ago, Samsung unveiled the Gear S, a brand new Tizen-powered smartwatch that happens to have smartphone features thanks to its embedded SIM, and comes with a large, square, curved display. Apple is expected to unveil the iWatch next week during its iPhone 6 event, and designer Martin Hajek – who has provided various iPhone 6 renders based on recent leaks – has imagined what the iOS smartwatch would look like.

Nokia exec shows refreshing honesty, admits HERE Maps was ‘rushed’ and ‘went horribly wrong’
The rise and fall of the Nokia HERE Maps app on the iOS App Store was a strange, unfortunate story for the Finnish company. Nokia came out swinging with a well-received app, managed to beat Google to the iPhone, but then struggled to hold onto any momentum the app had after it launched as it immediately faded into obscurity. Nokia was certainly down, but it wasn’t out — new mapping apps from Nokia are coming to mobile devices soon.

In all the discussion regarding sales of the new game consoles from Sony and Microsoft, one important point is too often overlooked — the Xbox One is available in significantly fewer territories than the PlayStation 4. Sony had a huge jump on Microsoft in the international market, but by the end of September, the two consoles will finally be on a relatively level playing field.
