Over the last several years, there has been a paradigm shift in the gaming industry. Consoles, unchallenged for years as the PC market faded, slowly started to lose ground as smartphones and tablets became competent gaming platforms. Suddenly, everyone was playing games on their mobiles devices, from casual fans to hardcore gamers. Things got even more contentious when Steam hit the scene, bringing triple-A and indie developers alike back to the PC in droves.

Microsoft vows to clean up its crapware-infested Windows app store
A recent report has revealed that the Windows app store filled with crappy apps and deceitful wannabe software that can trick the user into paying for an application that looks like the real thing. It also said Microsoft may be well aware of the situation, as the company both encouraged app developers to deliver Windows Store apps in bulk, and manually approved them. It appears Microsoft is well aware of its Windows Store problem indeed, and the company said on its Windows blog that it will finally restore order to its Windows Store.

Finding a sapphire iPhone 6 might be easier than you thought
It looks like the back-and-forth regarding whether or not there will be sapphire in the iPhone 6 display is going to continue until Apple finally answers the question once and for all on September 9th. 9to5Mac shared an investment note on Wednesday from PTT Research Forensics stock analyst and GTAT investor Matt Margolis in which he claims that every 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will come with a sapphire display, but only high-end 4.7-inch models will get the sapphire treatment.

Windows Phone is still going nowhere fast
Windows Phone diehards can deny it all they want, but the numbers don’t lie: The past year has been one of stagnation for their favorite platform. Following a report from IDC that showed Windows Phone shipments had actually declined year-over-year, we have another report from Kantar Worldpanel that shows Windows Phone’s growth for the past year has been largely stagnant at best.

It’s tough to remember an iPhone without third-party apps, but sure enough, the ability to download from the App Store didn’t arrive until iOS 2.0 in the summer of 2008. Though the iPhone 3G wasn’t nearly the global phenomenon that the iPhone brand as a whole is today, it was still quite clear that what Apple had just opened was the modern-day gold rush. Curious users flocked to the App Store on a daily basis — back in my time at Engadget, a few editors even pored through every single app release on a given day to see what was worth downloading. Now, with thousands being published every 24 hours, that same tactic is simply untenable.
