NASA is desperately trying to get its Mars mole digging again

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s InSight mission to Mars has been successful on a number of fronts, but there’s no denying that there’s been one very big disappointment: the mole. A self-burying instrument designed to hammer itself up to 16 feet into the surface of Mars has repeatedly fallen well short of this goal. In fact, at the moment it’s basically just sitting on the surface.

The InSight team believes that the soil on the planet’s surface is simply too powdery and loose for the instrument to gain traction and pull itself deeper. To fix this, the team used InSight’s robotic arm to push against the edge of the hole, giving the probe a better grip. This new technique appeared to work for a bit, but it wasn’t long before Mars barfed the probe back up. Bummer.

This bird has been frozen for 46,000 years, and scientists just found it

Finding fossils of creatures that lived millions of years ago is one thing, but some parts of our planet offer scientists the unique opportunity to discover ancient creatures that are essentially frozen in time. Siberia is one such place, and researchers working in the region have discovered all manner of animals that have remained frozen for tens of thousands of years before being uncovered.

Recently, an incredibly well-preserved bird was found locked away in a layer of permafrost in north-eastern Siberia. Scientists analyzed the bird’s remains and found it to be around 46,000 years old. The research was published in Communications Biology.

Insider accounts make the PS5 and Xbox Series X sound absolutely mind-blowing

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Once you start playing games on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, you’ll probably hate going back to older consoles. That seems to be the conclusion of a series of reports as well as a big leak that offers clues as to what the new AMD chips combined with faster RAM and solid-state drives will be able to do for gaming. Earlier this week, a trusted insider offered an amazing tale of testing an unnamed game on one of the new consoles. The leaker described the impressive graphics, the increased difficulty of the shooter title, and revealed the game was running at 90fps in native 4K resolution. On top of that, other game developers have started teasing what we can expect from the future of gaming once the new PS5 and Xbox Series X are finally released later this year.

Forget Roombas, this crazy sale slashes a top-rated robot vacuum to $119

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

iRobot’s lineup of Roomba robot vacuums used to be priced far out of reach for many people and top-of-the-line Roomba models are still very expensive. Take the iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal, for example. This incredible robotic vacuum cleaner has powerful suction and all the bells and whistles you can think of, plus it has a feature you’ll never find on lesser models: when the i7+ fills up with dust, dirt, and pet hair, it returns to a special base station and actually empties itself. Then it goes back to work, so it can literally run for months without you ever having to think about it.

iRobot Roomba i7+ (7550) Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal-Empties Itself, Wi-Fi Connec…: $799.00

The Roomba i7+ is $200 off right now on Amazon, but it’s still pretty pricey for a robot vacuum. Other, simpler Roomba models are on sale right now too, like the iRobot Roomba 614 Robot Vacuum for $224 or the upgraded Roomba 675 with Alexa support for $269. Those are both great deals, but there’s another sale happening today on Amazon that you should definitely consider before you buy any of those models.

iRobot Roomba 614 Robot Vacuum- Good for Pet Hair, Carpets, Hard Floors, Self-Charging: $224.00

iRobot Roomba 675 Robot Vacuum-Wi-Fi Connectivity, Works with Alexa, Good for Pet Hair, Carpets…: $269.00

The ILIFE V3s Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner doesn’t quite have the same brand awareness as Roomba, but it also doesn’t have iRobot’s huge marketing budget to work with. Those who do get this model always seem to rave about it though, and that helps explain why it has more than 2,500 5-star ratings on Amazon.

Don’t let the slim profile of ILIFE’s V3s Pro fool you, this is a powerful robot vacuum with strong suction that’s on par with mid-range Roomba models. It also has self-charging just like Roombas, and it works just as well on low-pile carpet as it does on hard flooring. This great model regularly retails for $160, and that’s already much lower than what you’d pay for a comparable Roomba or even a similar model from a budget brand. Thanks to Amazon’s one-day Gold Box deal on Sunday, you can snag one for only $118.99! That’s an incredible price and it won’t be available for much longer, so definitely grab one while you still can.

ILIFE V3s Pro Robot Vacuum Cleaner, Tangle-free Suction , Slim, Automatic Self-Charging Roboti…: $118.99

Check out the key details from Amazon’s product page:

  • With a tangle-free pet hair care technology, it focuses on picking up hairs, dirt, debris on hard floors. Wheels Diameter – 65mm
  • Low profile design to clean under beds, furniture where dirt hides. Ideal for hardwood, tile, laminate or stone.
  • Self-charging, programmable schedule, smart sensors for anti-bump and anti-fall. Runtime 120-140 mins
  • Easy operation with remote control, or one-touch auto clean button on the robot.
  • Tip: Easy maintenance, empty dustbin and clean the filter after each use. Replace the filter every month.
  • A 12-month and U. S. customer service team provides you with peace of mind and great service

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Feb. 23)

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of my best pleasant surprises I’ve ever stumbled upon while browsing Netflix was the first season of The End of the F***ing World, which is why I’m especially excited for I Am Not Okay With This to debut this week. Not only does it feature the same director as End of the F***ing World, but it’s also being produced by people who worked on Stranger Things. That’s a Netflix original series dream team if I’ve ever seen one.

The two other noteworthy arrivals this week are the second season of Altered Carbon and Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, which reimagines the first-ever Pokemon movie with CG. Altered Carbon’s delayed return should be especially interesting, as Joel Kinnaman, who starred as Takeshi Kovacs in season 1, won’t be returning for season 2. Instead, Anthony Mackie will be taking his place, playing the same character in yet another new body.

As much as President Trump loves to fire broadsides and to weigh in on big cultural topics of the moment when he feels like the direction is not sufficiently pro-America, it was probably inevitable that he would chime in at some point on The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarding the “Best Picture” Oscar this year to Parasite. That’s the film, as everyone probably knows by now, which made history earlier this month by becoming the first non-English language film in the 92-year history of the Oscars to win the top prize of the night. The movie, directed by Bong Joon-ho, is a black comedy and satire that focuses on class warfare, and there’s still such pent-up demand for the film that it’s been digitally remastered and is back in theaters for a one-week IMAX run.

Of course, President Trump is not having it. During a campaign rally in Colorado, the president tore into Parasite thus: “By the way, how bad were the Academy Awards this year?” he asked the crowd rhetorically, ginning up a chorus of a boos. “The winner is a movie from South Korea. What the hell was that all about? We’ve got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. And after all that, they give them best movie of the year?”

Astronomers are watching an exoplanet die right before their eyes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Detecting the presence of a new exoplanet hundreds of light-years away is always exciting for astronomers, but not all newly-discovered planets are created equal. Some are undeniably more interesting than others, and the planet known as NGTS-10b is most certainly one of the more intriguing worlds scientists have found.

The planet isn’t Earth-like or promising for life, but it does happen to be orbiting its star at an incredibly short distance. In fact, it completes an entire orbit of its start in a mere 18 hours. It’s a gas giant, making it a so-called “hot Jupiter,” but it might not be around for long. As researchers explain in a new paper published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the planet may be dying even as we speak.

This is the most annoying thing about Netflix

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Netflix may be a great streaming service to have around and even pay for despite the inevitable price hikes, but it can also be incredibly annoying at times. The best example is the autoplaying ads on the home page that used to drive me crazy until Netflix finally found it in its heart to give users an option to turn them off for good.

Then there’s the inevitable “what to watch” scroll of death that can go on for minutes without end — that’s a byproduct that we have to live with, however, so I don’t mind it that much. Then there’s the problem with the Continue Watching list: It’s far too difficult to remove content from it. Now, it turns out that Netflix has found a frustrating new way to annoy me. The service has started sending me emails urging me to remember to finish shows and movies that I started and then abandoned.

No matter how many times you read about it online or see specials about it on TV, most people still don’t seem to appreciate how important it is to get a good night’s sleep. Forget the simple benefits of feeling rested and more energized every day, there are also tons of other benefits like increased focus and even improved brain function.

If you don’t get a full night’s sleep as often as you should, there are countless things that could be the cause. A lot of times, however, it boils down to the quality of your sleep environment.
