Gmail is getting a brilliant new feature that will make it easier to find what you’re looking for

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’ve all been there — looking for a critical piece of information that we know is buried in somewhere in our inbox. The email hasn’t been deleted, but that doesn’t mean we’ll find it on the first try. Your inbox may be packed with emails that have some of the same search terms, complicating matters further. That’s all the more surprising when it happens in Gmail, considering that Search is Google’s most important product.

Google is apparently aware that Gmail needs better search functionality, and it has devised an update to make hunting for important data a lot faster than it was previously.

New study says poop may be responsible for rapid coronavirus spread

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As the medical community continues to focus on the spread of the coronavirus and resulting disease Covid-19, researchers are hunting for clues to explain its rapid spread in China and isolated regions outside of the country. Now, a new report from the Chinese Center for Disease Control suggests that poop might be a piece of the puzzle.

The paper reveals that a stool sample from an infected individual was confirmed to contain coronavirus that would have been capable of further infections. This is an important development since it opens up the possibility that the disease is spreading in ways not previously realized.

Facebook will pay users for access to their audio recordings

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A few months ago, Facebook and a number of other companies — including Amazon and Apple — found themselves embroiled in a bit of a controversy regarding the review of audio recordings. Specifically, Facebook employed human reviewers to transcribe audio recordings from users as a means to improve the overall quality of its software. While this is seemingly okay at first glance, many Facebook users were completely unaware that their audio recordings were being listened to in the first place.

Ultimately, Facebook pumped the brakes on its audio review process. Incidentally, Apple and other tech giants did the same.

Microsoft will bring its Defender antivirus software to iOS and Android

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As often as we write about malware-ridden apps and exploitable vulnerabilities in iOS and Android, it’s painfully clear that Apple and Google aren’t perfect when it comes to protecting the users of their mobile platforms. Enter: Microsoft. On Thursday, the company announced it will bring its Defender antivirus software to iOS and Android, with plans to preview its mobile security solutions at the RSA Conference next week.

Microsoft abandoned its own attempts at capturing a segment of the smartphone market when it killed off Windows 10 Mobile in 2017, but as CNBC notes, it has still been a major player in the space, releasing its popular Office software on iOS and Android, as well as bringing Minecraft to mobile devices in 2014.

Scientists solve mystery of space bacteria on the ISS

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When you’re living in a remote, isolated environment, things like bacteria and viruses can wreak havoc in a very short period of time. The International Space Station definitely qualifies as being remote and isolated, so when a pair of bacteria species were detected in a water dispenser onboard the space station, scientists wanted to know how big of a risk they may pose.

The bacteria that were detected in the water system are similar to those known to cause infections, but only in rare cases. The fear, of course, was that the bacteria may have changed or mutated into strains that were more difficult to deal with, thereby posing a serious threat to the crew. As a new paper published in PLOS ONE explains, that’s not the case.

This rumor about cheaper AirPods Pro won’t go away

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I must admit, I thought Apple’s AirPods looked strange and even a little silly when they first came on to the scene a few years ago, an early opinion shared by at least one of my colleagues here. It was an opinion, I should add, exclusively focused on their appearance, and how weird I initially felt with them hanging out of my ear like some sleek white piece of jewelry. Their performance, of course, is another matter entirely and has helped turn Apple’s now-ubiquitous wireless earphones into its most successful product launched during the last few years. Everyone in the industry is copying Apple, and even Samsung has finally given the audio port the old heave-ho, having just launched the Galaxy S20 that of course doesn’t have one.

Not only has Apple continued to improve the AirPods and eventually started offering customers the more expensive Pro option. But now, it seems, Apple may be planning to launch yet another AirPods variant soon — that is, if an anonymously sourced report from a publication with a mixed track record is to be believed.

PS5 was going to be the hottest topic at GDC, but Sony just canceled

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that it would be skipping E3 for the second year in a row. This came as a surprise, as E3 2020 seems like the perfect venue to showcase a ton of next-gen video games to a massive audience, but the expectation was that Sony would host its own reveal event in February instead. Now that February is almost over, not only have we heard nothing from Sony about an event, but now the company is pulling out of every major video game conference slated to take place this spring over concerns about the coronavirus outbreak.

Galaxy S20 in an exciting new color option might be launching soon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung and its partners will open Galaxy S20 preorders around the world on Friday, and many people will hurry to take advantage of the various deals that will be available during preorders. All Galaxy S20 models will be more expensive than we expected, as Samsung decided against making a more affordable version of the handset, one that could compete directly against the $699 iPhone 11.

We’ve already told you that skipping the Galaxy S20 preorder phase and waiting a few months might be a better idea, as Android handsets don’t retain their value like the iPhone, and better deals are always readily available down the road. Then, a few days ago, we learned of a Galaxy S20 version that Samsung hasn’t announced yet — a red model that looks truly stunning. At the time, we thought the red option was still a few months from launching, but it turns out that the red S20’s launch is actually much closer than we thought.

Millions of people have downloaded shady Android apps that Google just banned

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google’s enforcement actions against shady Android apps and developers come at such a regular pace these days that it’s starting to be hard to keep track of all the bans and violators. There’s just so many — and today, Google added to the pile, with a major crackdown that includes kicking almost 600 apps out of the Play Store. Google hasn’t as of the time of this writing identified which specific apps were part of this enforcement, which seems largely to have focused on ad fraud, though Per Bjorke, Google’s senior product manager for ad traffic quality, has said the apps were mostly games and utilities.

Unfortunately, this action comes after the apps had collectively garnered more than 4.5 billion installs.
