These are the secret patents Microsoft used to squeeze billions out of Android vendors
Microsoft’s return to the mobile space following the epic downfall of Windows Mobile has been slow going so far. In fact, the company’s Windows Phone operating system was first unveiled four years ago now, and Microsoft’s share of the global smartphone market still sits in the low single digits. But despite the company’s struggles to regain its footing in mobile, Microsoft continues to make billions from the smartphone and tablet markets. How? By using a list of patents it claims have been infringed by Android to pressure smartphone makers into licensing deals. And now, for the first time, that secret list is no longer a secret.

Why Apple needs 5 people to replace Steve Jobs
Apple CEO Tim Cook seems to get a lot of grief from investors and analysts because he’s not Steve Jobs. However, as a new profile of Cook in The New York Times makes clear, Cook is smart enough to understand that he’s not Steve Jobs and that nobody alive right now really is. However, just because there’s no Steve Jobs that doesn’t mean Apple is devoid of vision or talent and the company under Cook is relying more on teamwork than it did when Jobs was running the show.

Introducing the BGR Seal of Approval
There are countless technology products and devices that are released on what seems like a weekly basis, and unfortunately, a lot of them suck. They’re gimmicky, they have minor updates, they are buggy, they are hard to use, and they break. So, we thought that there has to be a way to help the regular consumer cut through the noise and determine that they are buying a quality product. And based on feedback we have received from many consumer electronics manufacturers, they would also love a way to highlight their best and most quality products.
With that, we are very excited to introduce the BGR Seal of Approval and also announce the first product we are awarding it to.

Yosemite’s coolest feature may not be available to all Mac users
One of the coolest software features Apple unveiled on stage during WWDC 2014 may not be available to all iOS and Mac users, German publication Apfeleimer speculates. “Continuity” / “Handoff” or the ability of iOS 8 and Yosemite users to pick up actions started on one platform and continue them on the other – including calling and full SMS support for Macs running Yosemite – may only be available to iOS and OS X devices that have Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, which is apparently needed to establish a connection between devices.

70% of pickups could use aluminum by 2025
Filed under:
In the next decade, the auto industry will see an explosion in its use of aluminum to cut weight and increase fuel economy, according to a study from market analysts Ducker Worldwide cited by The Detroit News. We are already seeing the lightweight metal show up extensively in luxury models from Europe, but with the impending launch of aluminum-intensive 2015 Ford F-150 (pictured above), North America is using it even more, as well. The report predicts 70 per cent of US pickups to have aluminum bodies by 2025.
It won’t just be pickups that see the benefit, though. The average amount of aluminum in US vehicles is forecasted by the study to grow from an average of 159 kilograms (350 pounds) in 2013 to about 249 kilos (550 pounds) by 2025. The most common parts to use it will be hoods, doors and – to some extent – roofs, as well.
The massive increase in pickups’ aluminum content hardly seems surprising. The F-150 is predicted to use so much that it might cause a short-term shortage, according to one earlier report. At the same time General Motors is heavily rumoured to be negotiating with suppliers for the next generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Ram is the last holdout of the Big Three, but the study predicts that not to last.
With that much additional aluminum use spread across the entire industry, demand for the material appears to only be increasing. Ford CEO Alan Mulally forecasted as much at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show when he said it would “proliferate across our lineup,” and GM has seen more opportunities for its use as well.

He may be a few months late to the party, but in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, Jay Leno has delivered a short video in which he runs down which of the Blue Oval’s pony cars from the past 50 years are his favorites.
The list is pretty darn similar to our own, with some of the big names from the Mustang’s half century making an appearance, while there are three or four cars here that we think you’ll be pretty surprised by.
Take a look below for this short video from Jay Leno’s Garage.
