Apple on Monday took the wraps off OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, two major updates for its computers and mobile devices, that have plenty of interesting features to lure in customers. There’s one new Yosemite and iOS 8 feature that got easily overlooked and will be taken for granted each day once these operating systems are released. This new feature deserves to be acknowledged, as it’s a major update for Apple, especially considering the current state of this particular business: Apple’s completely new Spotlight search feature available on both OSes.

When Tim Cook took the stage yesterday, he was out for blood. One of his most vicious attacks came in the form of an OS market share comparison, in which he noted that while Mavericks had already been installed on more than half of OS X computers, Windows 8 was still struggling to top 15%. There’s no doubt that Microsoft is struggling to convince users to migrate, but the latest data from Net Applications has a silver lining: Windows 8.1 has finally attained a higher market share than Windows 8.

Has the 2015 Ford Mustang gained hundreds of pounds?

Automakers face competing interests when it comes to developing a new generation of vehicle. On the one hand, companies want to build their cars to be safer and better handling, with more equipment and maybe even larger dimensions over the model it’s replacing. On the other hand, they strive to keep weight down to the benefit of both performance and fuel consumption. Usually something has to give, and in the case of the new 2015 Ford Mustang, those efforts may have resulted in a weight penalty of two or three hundred pounds.

This according to Blue Oval modifier Steeda Autosports, which states that “the 2015 Mustang ended up gaining 200-300 pounds (90-140 kilos) in this remake”. Despite the Mustang not being on the market yet, it would appear the leading Ford aftermarketer has been given early access to the 2015 model to help jumpstart its tuning efforts (a rather common development among trusted tuners). If Steeda’s assertion is accurate, that would make the challenge of getting the new pony car up to speed for both Ford and aftermarket customizers like Steeda that much greater.

We’re waiting for official word from Ford on the veracity of Steeda’s claim, but if true, it’s bound to be a bit of disappointing news for legions of Blue Oval performance enthusiasts. Watch this space for more.

There is now organized resistance against the modern smartphone. And it appears to be quite lucrative.

A website called Vintage Mobile offers a wide array of defiantly dumb phones from the era when Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson ruled the global handset market and there was a wide range of different designs and form factors.

Refurbished models on Vintage Mobile sell typically for between $100 and 200, but there are some gems that command four figures. Among European connoisseurs of the art of mobile handset, the Nokia 8800 Arte Carbon has achieved legendary status — and the price of a refurbished model in 2014 is nearly $1,400.

HTC has faced many setbacks, disasters and bitter disappointments since its handset unit performance started missing projections around Christmas 2011. But May 2014 might have been the most devastating blow yet. That is because HTC had supposedly reacted to miserable sales declines in 2012 and 2013 by revamping its handset design and marketing strategies. Both the product and how it is sold were changed to finally staunch the bleeding by spring of 2014.

Yet despite the new product and branding initiatives, May 2014 turns out to be a chilling omen of a summer of horror for the besieged Taiwanese vendor.
