Cancer drug that worked on Zika and Ebola might stop coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus treatment options could include a cancer drug that showed antiviral activity against Zika and Ebola.
  • BerGenBio’s bemcentinib is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials in the UK. If effective, the drug could be used in COVID-19 therapies in the future.
  • This potential coronavirus cure comes as a one-a-day pill that could stop the virus from getting into cells and prevent the infection from deactivating a crucial immune response.

We’re all hoping that vaccines will be found to fight against the novel coronavirus and prevent the disease from infecting more people in the years to come. But vaccines might not work, and that’s why we’re not placing all our eggs in one basket. More than 100 labs are testing vaccine candidates, including a handful of teams that have reached human trials with promising results. But doctors are also developing new COVID-19 therapies that either rely on meds used to treat other ailments, or brand new antibodies-based drugs.

One such drug is remdesivir, which was conceived to treat Ebola but showed promise in COVID-19 therapy. Researchers from Britain and Norway have a different antiviral in mind, one that showed promising results against Zika and Ebola in lab testing, and which is now being tried on coronavirus patients in a clinical trial in the UK.

Starting coronavirus lockdowns just 1 week earlier could have saved 36,000 lives

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US is closing in on a grim COVID-19 milestone, approaching 100,000 coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic that has infected more than 1.5 million Americans.
  • Researchers at Columbia University have produced a model showing what would have happened if lockdowns around the country had started just 1 week earlier. No surprise, thousands of coronavirus deaths here could have been avoided.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the response in the US to the COVID-19 crisis is just how fractured it’s been on a national level, such that some states took action earlier than others, some embarked on stricter mitigation practices, guidance has seemed contradictory at times from health agencies, and each state has been on its own lockdown schedule. Now that we’ve come out the other side of at least the first phase of the crisis, with all 50 states now having reopened to some degree, everyone is taking stock about what comes next — and also assessing how we got here in the first place.

One thing we do now know, according to a new analysis from researchers at Columbia University: Some 36,000 coronavirus deaths in the US could have been avoided if we’d have started lockdowns just one week earlier. You know, the same lockdowns that caused such an outcry around the country and sparked protests in the name of freedom.

  • A new Galaxy Note 20 leak includes renders of the phone that show off its modified design.
  • For the most part, the Galaxy Note 20 looks similar to 2019’s Galaxy Note 10, but the physical buttons and S Pen have been shifted around and the rear camera has been updated.
  • Rumors suggest the Galaxy Note 20 should be announced by Samsung in August.

The pandemic forced countless companies across every industry to change their plans, but many product launches are still scheduled to take place this year without any major alterations. One such product is Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20, which rumors and reports suggest is coming out in August, just as the Galaxy Note 10 did in 2019.

Note 20 leaks have been relatively infrequent up to this point, but with the presumed release date just a few months away, more information about the unannounced phablet is beginning to make its way online. Just days ago we heard that Samsung is planning to hold a digital reveal event for the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2, and now, we might have gotten our best look yet at the final design of the Galaxy Note 20 in a brand new leak.

Trump says US won’t shut down for second coronavirus wave

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The United States will not “shut down” if another wave of coronavirus cases strikes, or at least that’s what President Donald Trump is promising the nation and the rest of the world. As The Hill reports, his bold statement came during a tour of a Ford plant in Michigan this week.

“People say that’s a very distinct possibility,” Trump reportedly said. “It’s standard. And we’re going to put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country. We’re going to put out the fires. Whether it’s an ember or a flame, we’re going to put it out. But we’re not closing our country.”

Confidence is great, but someone should probably remind him that it’s not up to him.

Nest Learning Thermostat is back down to $199 on Amazon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Everyone knows that a smart thermostat like the Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat is a no-brainer purchase because it pays for itself.
  • While it’s true that a Nest thermostat is a great value at any price since you eventually make the purchase price back in savings on your energy bills, it’s still a good idea to get one while they’re on sale for up to $50 off retail.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We’ve told our readers this countless times in the past, but there’s no way to overemphasize this point: you need a smart thermostat. Not “you should get” a smart thermostat or “you might want to consider” a smart thermostat… you need one, and it’s just plain crazy not to have one. Forget all the convenient smart features and the nifty design, the bottom line is that smart thermostats save you money by cutting down your energy bills using smart scheduling and other intelligent features. Everyone wants to save money, and you can get started with two great deals on Amazon today that slash Nest thermostats to their best prices of 2020.

Starting with the more affordable model, the Nest Thermostat E is probably the single best smart thermostat model out there. It packs all the same features as the pricier smart thermostat from Nest, but it doesn’t have a stainless steel case or an OLED display. Those are both nifty features, but they’re also purely aesthetic. The Nest Thermostat E still has a beautiful design with a frosted glass display, and it pays for itself in a matter of months thanks to all the money you’ll save on your energy bills.

Google, T4000ES, Nest Thermostat E, Smart Thermostat, White: $139.00

Just look at all the great 5-star reviews on Amazon. “I installed myself in about 15 minutes and I am not a handyman. The app is easy to use and set schedules. I saved over $30 on our utility bill the first month we had it,” one reviewer said. “This is the third one that I have owned. I would not live without it. They are absolutely great, fast service if you need to talk to a trouble technician oh, they do what they are supposed to do,” boasted another. Everyone loves this awesome model, and it’s on sale right now at its lowest price of 2020 at Amazon.

Before you commit to that model, there’s an even better deal you should know about on the upgraded version. The Nest Learning Thermostat is a bit more expensive than the entry-level Nest E model, but it still pays for itself in savings. It might just take a little longer to pay for itself, is all. If you pick one up now on Amazon, however, it’ll take much less time than it normally does because it’s currently discounted in all four available colors. And lucky for you, the most popular color option — silver stainless steel — is also the one with the biggest discount!

Google, T3007ES, Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, Smart Thermostat, Stainless Steel, Works Wi…: $199.00

You really can’t go wrong with either model. You’ll save money which is great for your wallet, and you’ll conserve energy which is great for the environment. Plus, on top of all the smart scheduling features, you can also use the Nest app on your phone to control your smart thermostats or even control them with Alexa voice commands.

Graduation ceremonies are excruciatingly slow, are often held in overcrowded rooms or under the beating sun, and require students to buy silly caps and gowns that they’ll never even look at again. They are also incredibly meaningful for countless students and parents, but due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, millions of seniors will never have the chance to walk across the stage and accept their diplomas in front of their friends and family.

No online commencement speech from a celebrity or a former president can substitute a graduation ceremony… but maybe some free pizza will do the trick. Starting this weekend, Pizza Hut is giving away 500,000 pizzas to honor 2020 graduates, but unlike a recent Krispy Kreme promotion, you don’t need to actually be graduating to take advantage of the deal. As long as you have a Hut Rewards account, you can get a free medium 1 topping pizza.

Trump’s beloved hydroxychloroquine actually makes coronavirus worse

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Controversial coronavirus drug hydroxychloroquine has been featured in news reports extensively in the last couple of months, mostly thanks to President Trump’s high opinion of the drug and his hopes that it could be a game-changing cure for COVID-19.
  • A study on 96,000 COVID-19 patients who were treated in hospitals worldwide shows that hydroxychloroquine is more likely to provoke serious side-effects, including death, in coronavirus treatment.
  • Therapies that relied on a version of hydroxychloroquine combined with an antibiotic were even more dangerous to COVID-19 patients, the study shows.

Several frontrunners emerged in the race to find useful coronavirus drugs that can speed up recovery times and reduce complications. There are different classes of meds that might be used in COVID-19 therapies, too. Some of them are brand new drugs based on antibodies that can neutralize the virus and provide short-lived immunity. Others are vaccine candidates that will teach the immune system to create its own COVID-19-killing antibodies. And then we have common drugs that are already used to treat various other medical conditions and have been repurposed for COVID-19 treatment.

Hydroxychloroquine is the most controversial one in that last group, and it’s all thanks to the remarks and actions of a single man who has been convinced of the drug’s efficacy in fighting COVID-19. Science is kicking back with proof to the contrary though, and a massive hydroxychloroquine study reveals the drug does more harm than good. And yes, that “harm” can include death.

AirPods 2 with wireless charging are back down to $149.98, Amazon’s all-time low

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • AirPods pricing on Amazon is currently discounted across the board, and the hottest deal this week has been a new all-time low price on Apple’s wildly popular AirPods Pro.
  • Now, in addition to that crazy deal, AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case have dropped back down to their all-time lowest price of just $149.98.
  • These are both Amazon’s lowest prices ever on Apple’s best-selling AirPods models, and they certainly won’t be around for very long.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a drill. We repeat, this is not a drill. A truly shocking deal on Friday slashes Apple’s AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case to a their all-time low price, and you would have to be crazy to pass up this opportunity.

Now, we know what you’re thinking… Apple’s various AirPods models have been discounted on and off for months now on Amazon, so what’s so shocking about this deal? The answer is pretty simple, really. It’s obviously true that AirPods and AirPods Pro have gotten a bunch of discounts over the past few months, so seeing another discount hit Amazon certainly isn’t the craziest thing. What’s crazy about this deal is the amount of money that Amazon slashed off the price of the AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case.

Since the beginning of the year, Amazon has been offering this particular version of Apple’s AirPods on and off for $169. That’s a great price and it’s $30 less than what you would spend on them from the Apple store right now, but it’s still $10 more than the $159 that Amazon was charging during Black Friday last year. Now, however, AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case can be had for just $149.98. That’s a new all-time low price, and it’s crazy that it’s available right now while Amazon still isn’t fully focused on shipping nonessentials. And unlike most nonessential products, these earphones ship out ASAP, so you’ll have them in your hands and in your ears next week.

Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case: $149.98

Of note, many people will still want active noise cancellation despite this great deal, and you should know that Apple’s insanely popular AirPods Pro true wireless noise cancelling earbuds are still available right now at Amazon at the lowest price ever thanks to an additional discount that’s applied at checkout. They’re also shipping out as soon as possible, and they’ll arrive in most locations around the country next week.

Apple AirPods Pro: $227.99

Last but certainly not least, Apple’s entry-level AirPods 2 model is on sale as well right now. $139 is a great price for these cord-free earbuds, but truth be told, you would have to be a bit crazy to buy these for $139 when you can upgrade to the model with the wireless charging case for less than $11 more.

Apple AirPods with Charging Case: $139.00

CDC reveals the frightening reason coronavirus spreads so quickly

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The CDC recently updated information pertaining to coronavirus symptoms on its Pandemic Planning Scenarios page.
  • According to the CDC’s current best estimate, 35% of all coronavirus infections will be asymptomatic, which explains why the virus is able to spread so quickly — many infected people don’t even realize they have COVID-19.
  • The CDC also says 0.4% of all symptomatic patients will die from the virus, though some experts are pushing back against the low fatality rate being estimated by the CDC.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Everything that we think we know about the novel coronavirus changes on a daily basis, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has to do what it can to provide public health officials and modelers with the best data available. As such, the agency has developed five COVID-19 Pandemic Planning Scenarios, four of which “represent the lower and upper bounds of disease severity and viral transmissibility.” Meanwhile, the fifth scenario “represents a current best estimate” about severity and transmissibility.

According to the fifth scenario, which is the current best estimate based on the data available, 35% of the people who are infected with the novel coronavirus are asymptomatic. This helps explain why the novel coronavirus is able to spread so quickly — many infected people aren’t even aware that they have COVID-19. Additionally, the CDC estimates that 0.4% of all people who become infected and show symptoms will die, which is about quadruple the fatality rate of the flu.
