Here’s your latest reminder that Android security is a joke
The pile of Android threats to watch out for has been mounting at a pretty rapid clip so far this year, with apps sneaking into the Google Play Store that can do everything from log in to your Google and Facebook accounts, access key features of your device, spread malware and so much more. Google, of course, kicks these apps out of its store as soon as they’re found, which we note each time this occurs — though each instance is also one more reminder of just how much of a minefield the threat landscape remains. Meanwhile, as if all that weren’t enough, the security firm Malwarebytes is calling attention to what may be one of the nastiest Android infections yet — a piece of malware that’s actually been circulating for a while now that can reinfect a device after almost every defense has been thrown at it, including a factory reset.

This new 3D printing breakthrough will blow your mind
Researchers may have just figured out completely transform fields like medicine and biology, thanks to an innovative new 3D-printing technique that could be used to produce objects ranging from tissue to organs, mouthguards, and hearing aids — all in a matter of seconds.
It’s the result of a new technique developed by researchers at the Laboratory of Applied Photonics Devices within Switzerland’s Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. The technique starts with a translucent liquid, and slowly the object begins to take shape in a small, spinning container. The team says this method can be used to produce small objects “with unprecedented precision and resolution” in only a brief amount of time — less than 30 seconds, from start to finish. Details about the technique have been published in the journal Nature Communications, and a spinoff of the laboratory called Readily3D has been established to commercialize this technique.

Samsung’s Dexbook could boost the size of your phone’s display without any folding
The reason that foldable devices exist is that we all want more screen real estate from our mobile devices without the extra bulk. The sad reality is that this works better in theory than in practice. Both the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X unfolds into tablets, but they’re rather bulky nonetheless. The brand new Galaxy Z Flip unfolds into a regular all-screen smartphone that looks a lot like the Galaxy S20, but you can’t do anything with it when it’s folded. And even when it is folded shut, the Z Flip is rather chunky for a modern smartphone.
The technology isn’t quite ready to make the slim, foldable devices we’re dreaming of a reality. But it turns out that you don’t need a folding screen to extend the smartphone display beyond its already slim edges.

Paramount didn’t actually spend a lot on the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie
After the outcry from the internet last year when the first trailer for the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie hit YouTube, which inspired not only a mass freakout over the character’s appearance but a release delay so that last-minute changes could be made, the movie’s release is finally at hand. And in advance of its debut in theaters this weekend, I must say — I’m pleasantly surprised at the at least modestly positive vibe that’s surrounding it in the final lead-up to the release.
“Was not expecting this, but @SonicMovie is a total delight,” tweeted one writer who got to see it early. Likewise, Haruki Satomi — the president of Sega’s parent company Sega Sammy — released a statement this week offering his support, noting that: “Sonic has been loved by fans worldwide for 29 years, and we’re thrilled for them to see his debut on the silver screen. Sonic’s personality, charm, and this story of friendship are complemented with fantastic non-stop action.” The movie has the potential to “warm the hearts of viewers of all ages,” he continued.

Man credits Tesla Model X for saving his life after running off the road
A Tesla owner is crediting his Model X for saving his life after the vehicle ran off the road and almost started careening down an incredibly steep hill. In a story originally posted to Reddit, Justin Bowen relays how the Model X he was driving immediately applied the emergency brakes as soon as the SUV got off the road. It’s also worth noting — for any cynics out there — that Autopilot wasn’t engaged at the time of the incident.
“No the car wasn’t on autopilot and this road is notoriously dangerous,” Bowen explained. “There was a truck a few hundred feet further down. Any other car would have flipped and gone much further down. Autopilot emergency braked as soon as I went off the road and the extreme slope. Saving my life.”

Brilliant Ikea promo gives you discounts for navigating to the store with Google Maps
As much as we hate tech companies tracking our every move, Google Maps doesn’t work if you don’t share your location with Google. Most people, however, don’t even worry about the amount of data they share with Google Maps. Those that do mind have ways to limit the tracking with Google’s privacy-related features. You can use incognito mode to unlink Maps activity from your main Google account, and you can erase your Maps history if you so desire. But if you want to take advantage of Ikea’s brilliant marketing campaign, you’ll want to have your Google Maps Timeline turned on and recording your trips to the store.

A rare Nintendo PlayStation prototype is up for auction and can be yours for over $200,000
A few years ago, a photo of a Nintendo PlayStation prototype — arguably the rarest video game console in history — made its way online. It admittedly sounds crazy, but there’s actually an interesting backstory to a console that, at first glance, sounds completely made up.
As the story goes, Sony and Nintendo back in 1988 inked a deal whereby Sony would provide Nintendo with CD-ROM drives for the SNES. The thinking, at the time, was that the SNES would be able to play traditional Nintendo cartridge games along with disc-based games via Sony’s CD-ROM technology.

Could this be a leaked invite for the Xbox Series X reveal event?
After sprinkling details about their respective next-gen consoles throughout last year, Microsoft and Sony have been all but silent in the first month or so of 2020. Back in January of 2013, Sony invited members of the press to attend a special “PlayStation Meeting” at the end of February to unveil the PS4. We know Sony is planning to launch the PS5 this holiday season, but January came and went without a peep. If there’s going to be a reveal event this February, there isn’t much time left to announce it, and we’re likely going to have to wait until at least next month.
Microsoft actually waited until May of 2013 to host a reveal event of its own, which was an interesting choice with E3 2013 just around the corner. Separately, the event was also a complete disaster, so it’s hard to imagine that Microsoft will follow the same script when it comes to launching Xbox Series X. For that reason (and a few others we’ll discuss below), we’re struggling to discount an admittedly very sketchy Xbox leak that surfaced this week.

Apple is still planning to release the iPhone 12 in September
As the coronavirus continues to spread, the impact the virus continues to have on the tech industry is pronounced. Just yesterday, for example, the GSMA canceled this year’s Mobile World Congress, with GSMA CEO John Hoffman noting that the virus all but made it “impossible” to proceed with the biggest mobile trade show of the year.
What’s more, the coronavirus may also have an impact on Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 12. As we detailed last week, the coronavirus prompted Apple to stop sending engineers to China to participate in Engineering Validation Tests (EVT). As a point of reference, EVT is one step below Design Validation Testing (DVT) which comes into play when Apple firmly nails down the exact iPhone design and features it plans to ship to consumers.

Is this really Sony’s crazy new PS5 console design?
The PlayStation 5 is one of the most hotly anticipated new products of the season. That’s because Sony is expected to finally give the PS5 a proper announcement event as soon as next month. That should include a design reveal, which is long overdue given that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X design was unveiled several weeks ago. The PlayStation Meeting 2020 was initially rumored to take place in February, but Sony has yet to issue any official invites. The company did pull out of MWC 2020 days before the event itself was canceled over coronavirus fears. But while we’ve been waiting for Sony to finally announce plans for the console, we’ve stumbled upon a few leaks that suggest the PS5 design may have been staring us in the face all along.
