This #Nasabroom insanity sweeping social media is so dumb it’s truly depressing

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Welcome to the first truly stupid social media craze of 2020.

If you opened Twitter at all on Monday, you might have been greeted with the sight of hashtags like #Nasabroom or #Broomchallenge, along with tons of tweets filling your timeline that include video clips and photos of people amazed that their brooms are … standing upright, all by themselves. I’ve seen everyone from mothers to randos to even police departments getting in on the social media fun, some of them for a laugh and some of them totally serious — and perhaps all of them unaware this got started by a seemingly random tweet that claimed NASA had declared Monday a day of special gravitational significance. The significance being, yep, you guessed it. Stand your broom up at any point in the day, and voila. Prepare to be amazed by an ordinary piece of household cleaning equipment standing upright thanks to help from gravity, or something.

Perfect storm helps Boeing 747 break transatlantic speed record

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Anyone who has traveled by plane more than a few times knows that flight delays and late arrivals are one of the most frustrating aspects of air travel. Passengers aboard a Boeing 747-436 from New York to London this past weekend certainly didn’t have to worry about showing up tardy to their destination, as a perfect combination of weather conditions allowed the flight to arrive well over an hour ahead of schedule.

Thanks to a speedy jet stream created by Storm Ciara, the jet was able to ride far faster than is typical. The plan reached speeds of up to 825 mph, and that was speedy enough to break the record for the shortest subsonic flight from New York to London.

GameStop’s Valentine’s Day sale has tons of deals for the Player 2 in your life

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Suffice to say, the last several months haven’t been kind to GameStop. The video game retail chain has been buffeted by trends including casual gamers doing more of that activity on something other than a traditional gaming console (think phones and tablets), and not only is that one reason physical game discs aren’t selling as much as they used to. Gamers also have increasingly shifted to downloading titles instead of paying $60 for a physical version from a brick-and-mortar retailer.

That’s one reason the credit rating agency Moody’s in recent days downgraded the creditworthiness of GameStop, with the agency noting that “Sustained competitive threats from downloadable, streaming, and subscription gaming services, as well as the company’s ongoing transformation to improve profitability and evolve its vendor and partner relationships, elevate the company’s business and operational risk during a period of industry weakness.” No surprise, then, that in an environment like this the chain is thinking that a new sale might be the perfect recipe to get customers in the door and foot traffic picking up again, along with sales.

This re-imagined iMac design is absolutely stunning

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In today’s mobile-oriented world, where you can easily get by with just an iOS device, Apple’s iMac is something of an under-appreciated workhorse. The iconic desktop computer admittedly doesn’t have the allure of the iPhone and, if we’re being honest, the iMac isn’t even the most popular computer in Apple’s Mac lineup.

While there have been slight tweaks to the iMac design over the past few years, the overall look and feel of the machine haven’t changed drastically since the introduction of the original aluminum iMac in 2007. Sure, recent iterations of the iMac have gotten lighter, thinner, and of course, more powerful, but there’s no disputing that the design has remained somewhat stagnant over the last decade.

Boeing’s Starliner just can’t stop breaking

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

December 20th, 2019, was supposed to be a groundbreaking day for NASA and Boeing, with the latter’s Starliner spacecraft making its maiden voyage for the International Space Station. Empty of crew for the test flight, things seemed to be going well until a “glitch” in the spacecraft’s timer led it to burn more fuel than it should have, and its handlers were forced to abort the ISS visit and send the spacecraft back to Earth.

At the time, and in the days that followed, Boeing and NASA downplayed the severity of the glitch. They said it was a simple fix and that if the spacecraft had crew aboard, they could have salvaged the mission easily. It was a non-issue, they seemed to suggest. However, new reports highlight totally new issues with Starliner, including one that could have caused a serious problem while in space.

Specs leak for one of the most exciting unreleased Galaxy S20 rivals

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Galaxy S20 may be the most exciting phone of the first quarter of the year, but it’ll hardly be the only new Android phone worthy of your attention in the coming months. In fact, given the high price tag attached to all three S20 models, you might want to steer clear of Samsung’s newest smartphone line and go for a cheaper alternative from China. No, not Huawei’s P40 Pro, although that’s also going to be exciting as well. Huawei is banned in the US, and getting its flagship handsets might be an annoying chore.

OnePlus, on the other hand, is one of China’s most popular smartphone brands — one that’s already available in the US, directly from the manufacturer and from its partners. OnePlus is readying a brand new smartphone that will compete directly against the S20 series, and the specs for it have already leaked.

Watch the Mars 2020 rover’s laser in action

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s Mars 2020 rover will be the most complex and powerful piece of science equipment the space agency has ever sent to the Red Planet. It’s packed with a variety of instruments designed to collect a variety of data about the planet, but one of the most interesting is the new “SuperCam.”

SuperCam is an evolution of the Curiosity rover’s ChemCam, and once the Mars 2020 rover begins its mission in earnest it will be used to study objects on the planet’s surface. Well, perhaps “study,” is underselling it a bit since the rover’s mighty mast-mounted instrument will actually fire lasers at martian rocks and vaporize them. Yeah, it’s pretty awesome.

Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip availability details leaked

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung will finally unveil the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip on Tuesday, putting an end to the stream of leaks that flooded the web in January. Everything there is to know about these handsets leaked well ahead of the announcement, from design to specs to pricing and launch dates. In the past few days alone, we saw Samsung confirm the Galaxy S20 name on its website, and air a Galaxy Z Flip commercial during the Oscars.

It’s as if the company doesn’t care about all the leaks at this point. And, truth be told, it really shouldn’t. The fans who love the Galaxy S line have had plenty of time to decide whether to buy it, and all the leaks might help with Samsung’s bottom line. Everyone else who’s not into tech news or the Galaxy S series will discover the phones in stores and via Samsung’s upcoming promotions. And a new leak seems to indicate that Samsung and its partners will soon start marketing the phones.

For some reason, Samsung thinks it can sell 2.5 million Galaxy Z Flip units this year

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

You only need to look as far as Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, when Samsung surprised everyone with a TV spot for the still-unannounced Galaxy Z Flip foldable that will be unveiled on Tuesday, to understand that the company has high hopes for this new device.

It was a big night for South Korea, with the country’s breakout film hit Parasite scoring a slew of honors including Best Director and Best Picture, so it was perhaps fitting that one of the country’s most important companies also chose that moment to add to the leaks (via a 30-second commercial) that have been mounting ahead of Samsung’s next Unpacked event on Tuesday. Tomorrow, we’ll also see the new Galaxy S20 smartphone series unveiled, as well as the new Galaxy Buds, among other announcements. The Galaxy Z Flip will be among the stars of the show, though, with all eyes on the product following Samsung’s controversial first attempt at making a foldable phone with last year’s unimpressive Galaxy Fold. In fact, Samsung’s belief that it could finally have a foldable hit on its hands here is reflected in the sales target reportedly attached to the device, which emerged on Monday.

Four Chinese spies are charged with being behind the Equifax data breach

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Justice Department today indicted four spies working for the Chinese government for hacking into Equifax back in 2017. Notably, the indictment confirms previous speculation which attributed the massive data breach to spies working for a foreign government.

Interestingly enough, investigators first began to suspect that the breach was a spy job because the stolen Equifax data wasn’t making its way online. This led investigators to conclude that the data breach wasn’t carried out by run-of-the-mill fraudsters looking to make a quick buck online, but rather as part of a larger, more involved, and more sophisticated operation.
