Galaxy S20 camera samples leak, showing new night mode and zoom features
Samsung will unveil two new phones later this week, including the Z Flip clamshell foldable that’s already being advertised on TV, and the Galaxy S20 series, which comes in three sizes, all of them featuring 120Hz displays and 5G connectivity. If you’ve been following the flood of Galaxy S20 leaks in the past few weeks, you already know this is going to be Samsung’s best phone. It’ll feature a Galaxy Note 10-like design, and even more powerful specs than its predecessors. The camera experience is also going to get several upgraded features, with the S20 Ultra expected to deliver the best camera ever seen on a Galaxy S phone so far. All three phones will feature up to quad-lens cameras on the back, although it’s the Ultra that’s supposed to feature a 108-megapixel primary camera, as well as a periscope zoom lens on the back. We’ve known these details for weeks, but what we didn’t have at the time, to back all these leaks up, were camera samples. With just a few hours to go until Samsung’s Unpacked 2020 event, Galaxy S20 camera samples leaked as well.

The unannounced Galaxy Z Flip was just revealed in Samsung’s own Oscars commercial
If you watched the Oscars last night, you might have noticed a Samsung commercial for an unexpected product, one that doesn’t officially exist. That’s the Galaxy Z clamshell foldable, of course, a phone that anyone who follows tech news closely is aware of. The handset appeared in a large number of leaks in the past few weeks, including plenty of hands-on videos. Apparently, you can stumble into Z Flip units in certain stores, if you’re lucky, several days ahead of the official launch. The Galaxy Z Flip will be unveiled on Tuesday, alongside the Galaxy S20 series, and should go on sale on February 14th in the US and other markets. But Samsung’s Oscars ad only needed 30 seconds to confirm many of the recent leaks detailing the new foldable.

Check out this new Netflix fantasy series while you wait for ‘Stranger Things’ to return
If you’re one of the longtime fans of Locke & Key, the comic book series with a devoted following from illustrator Gabe Rodriguez and writer Joe Hill (the son of Stephen King), you were finally treated to a long-awaited, oft-delayed reward this weekend: A small-screen adaptation, at last, of the comic series that has been in the works, off and on, for a few years now, bouncing between a number of platforms before ultimately arriving as, in the opinion of this writer, a satisfying and family-friend fantasy series now streaming on Netflix.
The series follows three siblings in the wake of their father’s murder. They move, along with their mother, to their family’s ancestral home, which they slowly come to realize hides a set of magic keys that bestow upon whomever wields them powerful new abilities. Why this series works — and the reason I enjoyed it, while there will be some of you who definitely won’t find this up to your liking — is that showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill (who’ve had a hand in producing some of the best TV in years between them, but more on that in a moment) decided to move away from the comics’ emphasis on horror and tilt the whole thing more toward fantasy in the adaptation they produced. The idea, Cuse explained to me, was to make this something that would appeal to families, and to anyone who’s a fan of things like Steven Spielberg’s blockbusters and the Harry Potter film franchise. That may not be you, and that’s okay. A number of early reviews (like these) have found the series plenty satisfying for that reason — it’s in the same ballpark as Stranger Things, but definitely not as dark and violent — and Cuse and Averill believe in the show enough that they’re already working on a Season 2, and we caught up with both of them to talk about the show.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Feb. 9)
After a fairly quiet week last week, Netflix is picking it up again over the few days with a range of quality content. Up first is the fourth season of Better Call Saul, which actually returns for its fifth (and penultimate) season in just a few weeks. The second season of Narcos: Mexico debuts this week as well.
As for movies, the sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is likely at the top of the list for many viewers, but I am most excited to finally watch Good Time, which is the movie Josh and Benny Safdie directly immediately before Uncut Gems, and is said to feature one of Robert Pattinson’s best performances.

Radiation-hungry fungi found in Chernobyl reactor could save astronauts
The nuclear reactor meltdown at Chernobyl was a devastating blow to the region, forcing mass evacuations and necessitating a cleanup effort that remains ongoing to this day. It was a tragedy, but over the years it’s produced some very interesting scientific opportunities, and one of the most intriguing came with the discovery of a type of fungi that had started to make a home inside the destroyed reactor.
First discovered way back in the early 1990s, the fungi became the focus of study for researchers who wanted to learn more about how it survived in the intense radiation of the failed reactor. As it turns out, the fungi didn’t just tolerate the radiation, they absolutely loved it and had actually found a way to use the radiation as energy for growth.
