Google Maps just added an awesome new feature we wish would come to Waze
If you’re like us and millions of other people out there, you fight an inner battle just about every time you have to navigate anywhere. Should you use Google Maps? Should you use Waze? There’s no question in our minds that Google Maps provides a better on-screen navigation experience, and it also uses the same live traffic data as Waze to reroute you in the event that traffic starts to pile up somewhere along your path. That’s the biggest thing, right? You want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, and both apps will guide you along the best path (theoretically, at least). The problem with Google Maps, of course, is that it doesn’t have all the crowd-sourced incident reporting features that make Waze so fantastic. Are there police ahead on the highway? Is there a speed trap along your path? Are there bad potholes on the road or other hazards ahead? Waze will tell you all that and more thanks to its massive user base of active Wazers who love looking out for their fellow drivers.
Waze is indeed the best option out there when it comes to getting real-time information about the roads ahead. While it’s true that Google regularly adds key features from Waze to Google Maps since it owns both apps, there are still plenty of features that will never make the leap from Waze to Google Maps. There are also new features being added to Waze all the time that people wish Google Maps would copy, but they never seem to make it over. Waze might seem like the best choice when heading out on a drive, but things got a bit more complicated this week when a new feature began rolling out to Google Maps for both Android and Apple’s iPhones.

Sony denies report that leaked PS5 price and release date information
The PS5 is the clear winner when it comes to rumors and speculation about next-gen consoles. Both Sony and Microsoft will launch new hardware next holiday season, but the Xbox Series X is barely getting the same attention from fans. The PlayStation 5 has reached a stage where some retailers are already ready to register your interest in pre-ordering the device — even Best Buy is doing it — but there’s no such thing for the new Xbox. While we’ve had several leaks so far claiming to know the actual price and release date of the PS5, Sony hasn’t really addressed them in official comments about the console. That changed this week when Sony dispelled a new report that brought forward purported availability information for the new console.

More details leak about Galaxy S11’s monster 108-megapixel camera
The Galaxy S11 isn’t due until mid-February, but we already have a ton of rumors about the upcoming flagship series, and the leaks keep piling in. Several sources told us so far that the Galaxy S11 phones will have the same overall design. The handset will look a lot like the Galaxy Note 10 when it comes to the display design, although the bezels might be even thinner. Expect a massive camera upgrade on the back, with a large camera module supposed to pack up to five distinct sensors depending on the model you buy. The Galaxy S11e will have fewer sensors than the top of the line Galaxy S11+. But we expect all of them to share the same primary camera, which appears to be a monster 108-megapixel lens that has no real rival in the industry.

The PS5 might be the console on every PlayStation fan’s mind, but Sony isn’t done developing products for its current console. Just a few weeks after telling the world that the PS5 controller will be much better than the DualShock 4 controller you’re using now, Sony quietly launched an unexpected product meant to improve gaming on the PS4. The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is a $29.99 device that can be attached to the controller to offer users two additional, fully customizable buttons.

Apple just removed one of the most delightful iPhone apps from the App Store
With the iPod being one of the most iconic products in tech history, it’s no big surprise that we’ve seen two recent efforts to bring the iPod user experience — complete with a virtual scroll wheel — to the iPhone.
A few weeks back, for example, we highlighted an iOS developer who showed off an iPod Classic emulator which featured a scroll wheel and an implementation of Cover Flow. Even more recently, a music player app dubbed Rewound made its way to the App Store. The app itself is pretty basic, but the rub is that it allows users to download all sorts of skins, including an iPod design that will have you nostalgic for the music of 2006.

Google’s iMessage rival finally comes to the US, but it’s still got a long way to go
Compared to the simplicity and feature-rich nature of Apple’s iMessage, the texting and messaging situation confronting Android users has been a certifiable mess for years now. Google has trotted out one service after another, such that no one standard has really caught fire across the ecosystem in the same way that any iMessage user can message any other iMessage user with ease and with the same bells and whistles included.
Google’s new messaging service called Chat is an attempt to change all that — to offer Android users a texting option comparable to iMessage and with many of its standard features, like read receipts and typing indicators, those dots that let you know someone is in the process of responding to you. Moreover, any Android phone with the Rich Communications Services (RCS) protocol enabled can use Google Chat, which has now finally arrived in the US.
