‘Civilization 6’ is free to download from the Epic Games Store

  • Civilization 6 is now free to download on PC from the Epic Games Store.
  • Civilization 6 follows Grand Theft Auto 5 as the latest game being offered free of charge by the digital store, and normally retails for $59.99.
  • The Civilization games have been around for nearly three decades, with Civ 6 launching in 2016.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the Epic Games Store made Grand Theft Auto 5 the free game of the week, it seemed like the program might have hit its peak. Despite having originally launched more than half a decade ago, GTA5 is still one of the best-selling and most popular online games on the planet, and even though tens of millions of people already own it, the influx of traffic when the offer went live last Thursday was enough to cause the entire store to crash.

Topping Grand Theft Auto 5 was never going to be easy, but this Thursday, the Epic Games Store came surprisingly close when it made Civilization 6, the latest entry in the beloved strategy franchise, free to download. Civilization may not have the same cultural footprint as GTA, but this 2016 game still retails for $59.99 on most digital storefronts. It’s not often that we see full-priced games being given away free of charge with no strings attached.

Wind might make coronavirus even more dangerous – here’s how

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • New research indicates that coronavirus transmission through the air might be enhanced by windy conditions, which could transport droplets well over 6 feet.
  • The novel coronavirus can spread in the air via coughing, sneezing, and talking, with authorities advising up to 6 feet of distance between people to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Social distancing practices should remain in place as countries open up to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infections.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Guidelines for the novel coronavirus health crisis explain the importance of social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19, but they don’t necessarily agree on the minimum distance. The WHO says people should keep a physical distance of at least 3 feet, while the CDC advises 6 feet. There are instances where neither is possible, which is why the use of face masks is so important. An increasing number of studies have shown that the virus can travel well beyond 6 feet anyway, especially if it’s pushed around by ventilation.

Physics researchers looked at various models for airborne transmission of saliva droplets that can contain a viral load and concluded that with the right ventilation, they could travel more than 6 feet in the air.

Netflix is going to start automatically canceling inactive accounts

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Paying for a Netflix account has been an indispensable entertainment option for millions of peoples’ peace of mind during the coronavirus pandemic, when everyone has been stuck at home to stop the spread of COVID-19.
  • Nevertheless, there are some Netflix account holders who for whatever reason are the complete opposite of us compulsive bingers. With that in mind, the streamer says it’s going to start canceling inactive accounts soon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you’re one of the tens of millions of people who pay for a Netflix account, you better use it if you don’t want to lose it. That’s the message the streaming giant basically delivered Thursday, with its heads-up that anyone with an inactive Netflix subscription is going to start seeing emails or in-app notifications soon along these lines.

“We’re asking everyone who has not watched anything on Netflix for a year since they joined to confirm they want to keep their membership,” Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu explained in a company blog post. “And we’ll do the same for anyone who has stopped watching for more than two years.”

US secures 300M doses of coronavirus vaccine candidate from Oxford

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus vaccine race delivers more promising news, as the US invested $1.2 billion to speed up development and secure 300 million doses for the breakthrough Oxford candidate.
  • The novel coronavirus drug proved in pre-clinical trials that it’s effective and safe, and it’s now in human testing.
  • AstraZeneca has licensed the medicine and is in talks to significantly expand manufacturing capacity.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus health crisis isn’t going away anytime soon, but we’re getting more and more promising reports about potential treatments that could cure or even prevent COVID-19. Vaccines, as in more than one candidate, are the miracle drugs that can prevent infections with SARS-CoV-2, but they’re up to a year away from reaching the masses. At best, the first candidates will be approved for emergency use as soon as September. But there’s no guarantee these medicines will work on humans despite the promising data coming from pre-clinical and clinical trials.

If the Oxford breakthrough drug ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 is efficient and safe, the US will buy as many as 300 million units from the first batch of a billion doses that AstraZeneca can manufacture. To secure that supply, the US government pledged $1.2 billion towards the pharmaceutical company’s coronavirus vaccine development efforts.

These plant-based bottles could mean the end of plastic waste

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new plastic alternative made of plant sugars could replace traditional bottles while being more environmentally-friendly.
  • The bottles, which were developed by a company called Avantium and are strong enough to hold carbonated liquids, can degrade in as little as one year.
  • In comparison, traditional plastics can last for decades even under the harshest environmental conditions.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Plastics are both one of mankind’s greatest inventions and also one of its most embarrassing failures. Plastics are all around us, and that’s the problem. They’re not just in your home, they’re stuck in your bushes outside, floating down a nearby river, and piling up in the middle of the ocean.

The biggest problem is that plastics last a long, long time. They’re durable and cheap, making them great for everyday use, but we’re terrible at keeping track of them. A new plant-based alternative could change things for the better and prevent even more plastic waste from piling up in landfills and abroad.

A common drug that costs $25 a month may save coronavirus patients’ lives

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A common blood pressure drug that’s been used by millions of people might reduce the risk in coronavirus patients of severe respiratory complications that can lead to death.
  • Researchers from Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have studied the prophylactic effects of prazosin, an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist, on cytokine storms and ARDS.
  • Clinical trials studying the ability of the drug to prevent coronavirus complications are underway.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

No matter how contagious the novel coronavirus might be, we’d have an entirely different approach to it if it didn’t lead to life-threatening complications. Vaccines and antibody drugs specially crafted to speed up recovery will help a great deal, but until the new drugs are out, doctors are trying to figure out therapies that can prevent life-threatening complications with the help of some of the medicines that are already available to them. Several studies proved that existing meds can be used in COVID-19 cases with notable results. Remdesivir, a triple-drug therapy that includes an HIV antiviral, and blood thinners are just some of the types of drugs that can be used to treat COVID-19 patients. The use of blood thinners is a notable highlight, as it can prevent blood clotting and reduce complications.

Researchers now think that the use of a common blood pressure drug could prevent inflammatory syndromes in coronavirus patients that can lead to death, but human trials will be required to investigate their efficacy.

Amazon’s best-selling 15W fast wireless charger is somehow only $8.99

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Most flagship smartphones and even mid-range smartphones support wireless charging these days, but not all wireless chargers are created equal.
  • Even if you don’t have a phone that supports the new faster 15W wireless charging standard, you should still consider future-proofing your purchase and picking up a charger that supports all available wireless charging speeds up to 15W.
  • What you might not realize is that getting a 15W charger doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, as evidenced by Amazon’s sale on the popular Letscom Ultra-Slim 15W Fast Wireless Charging Pad.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Wireless chargers are probably the most popular smartphone accessories we cover here at BGR Deals, unless you consider headphones like Apple’s deeply discounted AirPods and AirPods Pro to be smartphone accessories. Of course, it’s not exactly difficult to figure out why wireless chargers are so popular right now. There’s nothing quite as liberating as kissing charging cables goodbye and never having to fumble with another cord or connector again. When you want to charge up your phone, just place it on the wireless charging pad or wireless charging stand and you’re done.

The other reason wireless chargers are so popular is that they seem to go on sale all the time. We’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of great deals on wireless chargers come and go over the past couple of years alone, and you can often find popular models on sale at great prices. For all the deals we’ve seen throughout the years though, we’ve never seen anything quite like the deal Amazon is running right now on the Letscom Ultra-Slim 15W Fast Wireless Charging Pad.

Most fast wireless charging pads and stands have two different fast charging modes in addition to regular old 5W wireless charging. First, they have a 7.5W charging mode for iPhone models like the iPhone 11 series, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and others. That’s the fastest wireless charging speed Apple’s various iPhone models support. Then, they also have a 10W fast wireless charging mode because many Android phones support that faster charging speed. There are a handful of Android smartphones that support even faster 15W wireless charging though, and this Letscom can handle that as well.

Ready for the best part? This top-rated Letscom 15W fast wireless charging pad is somehow on sale right now for just $8.99! That’s one of the lowest prices we’ve ever seen on any wireless popular charger, let alone a model that supports 15W charging. Definitely hurry and grab one because you don’t want to miss this opportunity.

Stimulus checks are great, but a new idea would give everyone $10,000 in credit card debt relief

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The toll from the coronavirus pandemic is, sadly, continuing to get worse in the US — with another 2.4 million Americans having filed for unemployment and more than 1.5 million cases of the virus now having been confirmed in the US. Not to mention coronavirus stimulus proposals continuing to circulate.
  • The infection totals are according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University.
  • Two professors have come up with a new coronavirus stimulus idea that doesn’t involve stimulus checks. The focus, instead, is on credit card debt.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Since Congress already passed one $2.2 trillion relief bill in March that resulted in direct coronavirus stimulus payments to most Americans, there doesn’t seem as much bipartisan support at the moment for another massive legislative package that includes funding for a second wave of stimulus checks. The Democrat-controlled House has already passed just such a package, but leaders in the Republican-controlled Senate have pumped the brakes on passing a similar measure of their own.

But with tens of millions of Americans newly jobless, including another 2.4 million Americans who filed for unemployment last week, that only underscores the fact that the coronavirus pandemic is continuing to exert a terrible toll on the US. It’s why the already-passed stimulus bill included an extra $600 per week in unemployment benefits for the newly-jobless, and it’s also why — even though coronavirus cases are continuing to multiply in many states around the country — all 50 states have now reopened to one degree or another. But are there still coronavirus stimulus ideas worth exploring, even outside of direct cash payments that are apparently politically problematic at the moment?

You need these 5 things to keep from going nuts in coronavirus quarantine

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Some regions are beginning to ease their shelter in place orders and allow some nonessential businesses to reopen. As we’re seeing in Texas, this is a very bad idea.
  • It’s far too soon to lower our guard and we must continue to isolate as much as possible in the coming weeks and months in order to protect ourselves from the inevitable second wave of coronavirus infections.
  • We have some recommendations for products that will help keep people occupied while in coronavirus quarantine.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We have some good news: some experts believe that the novel coronavirus outbreak in the United States will finally start getting better in the weeks to come. That’s the first ray of sunshine we’ve seen in a very long time, but it’s important that we don’t get ahead of ourselves. Before you get too excited about the possibility that things are starting to improve, it’s important to keep reminding yourself that it doesn’t mean things will soon go back to normal. They won’t. Unless we all continue to quarantine ourselves and only go out when we absolutely need to, there will be a horrific second wave of infections that will be devastating to our healthcare system and to our morale.

With all that in mind, there’s one thing you need to keep reminding yourself… this won’t last forever. It’s difficult since staying in isolation is in such stark contrast with the way we normally live our lives, but you have to focus on the big picture. Staying in quarantine will save lives. It will also help slow and ultimately stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, which is crucial since we all know that there’s no vaccine coming for at least 12 to 18 months. Even then, there’s no telling how much the virus will have mutated by that time, so we don’t know how effective a vaccine will be.

Now that you know you need to continue to stay home as much as possible for at least the next month or two, here are some key items that will help pass the time in self-quarantine.

Headphones

Spending quality time with your family is obviously important, but so is spending some time alone. A good pair of headphones is a must-have to help drown out the world around you, and Amazon has some great options that are still shipping despite the company’s new policy on delaying deliveries of nonessential items. AirPods Pro are in stock and shipping immediately, and they also happen to be on sale at Amazon’s new lowest price ever. You can also save a bunch of money on Apple’s AirPods 2 both with and without the wireless charging case.

Apple AirPods Pro: $227.99 (new all-time low price)

Apple AirPods with Charging Case: $139.00

A tablet

After months of spending tons of time together, you’re not always going to want to watch TV with the rest of your family. Also, you’re going to get tired of gaming and trying to read the news on your tiny smartphone screen. You’ll definitely want a great tablet, and the best option out there right now is Apple’s newest 10.2-inch iPad, which starts at just $279.99 instead of $329 right now at Amazon. If you’re looking to spend even less, Amazon’s Fire 7 Tablet, Fire HD 8 Tablet, and high-end Fire HD 10 are all on in stock right now starting at just $49.99.

Fire HD 10 Tablet (10.1″ 1080p full HD display, 32 GB) – Black: $149.99

An eBook reader

Tablets are great for reading the news and for reading books, but if you’re a big-time reader you’re definitely going to want a dedicated device that’s easier on the eyes. Needless to say, it doesn’t get any better than Amazon’s all-new Kindle and waterproof Kindle Paperwhite and you can save 20% if you buy two of either model or one of each.

Kindle Paperwhite – Now Waterproof with 2x the Storage – Includes Special Offers: $129.99

Board games

Google’s Pixel 4a release date may be delayed yet again

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google is currently planning to announce the Pixel 4a on July 13th, according to leaker Jon Prosser.
  • The Pixel 4a was initially expected to make its debut at Google I/O 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic forced its cancellation, at which point it was delayed to June.
  • The Pixel 4a will come in Just Black and Barely Blue colors, and won’t support 5G connectivity.
  • Fans of bulkier phones will be disappointed to learn that there’s no evidence of a Pixel 4a XL.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced companies in every industry to think on their feet and change their plans, and the technology industry wasn’t spared. Although some companies did their best to stay on schedule, as Apple did with the launches of new MacBook Air, iPad Pro, and iPhone SE models in March and April, other companies delayed reveals by weeks or months, which seems to be what happened to Google’s upcoming Pixel 4a.

Early on, the assumption was that the Pixel 4a would make its debut at Google I/O 2020 on May 12th, since the Pixel 3a had been unveiled at the developer conference a year prior. But Google had to cancel the 2020 event, and rumors began to crop up suggesting that the release date had been moved to June. It seemed likely that Google would show off the phone at its Android 11 beta launch show, but a new leak pours cold water on that theory.
