  • The iPhone 12 might be the first new iPhone series to ship without EarPods earphones in the box.
  • An analyst with an excellent track record says that Apple is looking to drive up demand for AirPods with the move.
  • Apple is expected to run some sort of AirPods promotion in the second half of the year that would further drive up demand, although no iPhone 12 or AirPods prices are offered in the report.

The novel coronavirus health crisis might delay the iPhone 12 launch, several reports have said. Travel bans prevented Apple engineers from traveling to China in the past few months, which could delay the manufacturing of the handset. A recent rumor detailing Apple’s AR glasses plans tells us that the iPhone 12 announcement event could take place in October rather than September, which would be a first for the iPhone. Apple supposedly plans to reveal Apple Glass at the end of the show but would like an in-person audience to do it. A new rumor now details another unexpected plan for the iPhone 12. Apple supposedly wants to ditch the EarPods, which would be another first for the iPhone.

This formula will ‘decode’ the habitability of exoplanets

  • Scientists from Cornell University have developed a model to “decode” the habitability of distant exoplanets.
  • By taking into account the color of the planet as it appears from a distance and the light of the start it is orbiting, scientists can calculate the likelihood that the surface is comfortable for life.
  • New exoplanet-hunting telescopes will give researchers a better look at distant worlds, and with tools like this, we may get a better idea of which ones could host life.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In the endless search for worlds beyond our solar system, astronomers have discovered planets of many types, sizes, and circumstances. From frozen rocky worlds to massive, steaming gas giants orbiting so close to their star it’s a wonder they even still exist, exoplanets can vary dramatically. For scientists searching for life outside of Earth, it makes the job incredibly difficult, but astronomers at Cornell University have built a model that they think can help.

It’s a climate “decoder” of sorts, that gleans information about a planet’s potential for habitability based on the light that can be detected coming off of it. Their work was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, and it could exoplanet researchers focus their attention on worlds that have the best chance of supporting life.

Antibody found in SARS patients can also block the novel coronavirus

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers working on monoclonal antibody treatment for the novel coronavirus have identified an antibody in a SARS survivor that can also neutralize SARS-CoV-2 and prevent COVID-19.
  • The SARS antibody can be used in an antibody cocktail drug to prevent the new virus from attaching itself to cells and boost the immune response.
  • Vir Biotechnology and GlaxoSmithKline will study two versions of the antibody in clinical trials.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The race to find a cure for the novel coronavirus is on, and there are three separate efforts being pursued.

The simplest one is to use common drugs to treat symptoms and prevent complications. Such drugs include remdesivir, which was proven to reduce the COVID-19 recovery time, and blood thinners, which can prevent clotting-related complications, including strokes, heart attacks, and death. One other course of treatment concerns vaccines, which could be ready as early as September, to prevent the infection, though vaccines might not work, and there’s no guarantee they will actually roll out earlier than next year. The third option consists of brand new drugs that are being developed to stop the virus from replicating inside the body and improve the patient’s condition. These are antibody drugs that would work just like a plasma transfusion from a patient who survived COVID-19. They could also provide limited immunity, some researchers believe.

We’ve seen an increasing number of reports detailing the various monoclonal antibody drugs, with several such drugs already in development in China, Korea, and the US. The latest study details an unusual but exciting discovery: An antibody from a patient who survived SARS 17 years ago works against SARS-CoV-2.

New Galaxy Note 20 leak sheds light on Samsung’s next-gen phablet

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 is set to arrive later this year.
  • Samsung’s next-gen phablet will reportedly ship with a 108-megapixel shooter and an improved ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.
  • The entry-level Galaxy Note 20 will not ship with a 120Hz display.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Samsung later this summer will officially unveil its Galaxy Note 20 lineup, the company’s next-gen take on its popular phablet. If the name is throwing you off, that’s perfectly understandable as Samsung, similar to what it did with its Galaxy S series, is jumping from the Note 10 all the way to the Note 20. Though purely a marketing gimmick, the new naming scheme does add a bit more excitement to a product line that has become a bit predictable in recent years.

Now Samsung, in stark contrast to Apple, seemingly doesn’t do much of anything to keep product details from leaking out. As a result, we typically know everything there is to know about a new Samsung product weeks, if not months, ahead of time. With that said, we’ve already seen a number of Galaxy Note 20 leaks surface over the past few weeks.

What are the odds of intelligent life existing outside of Earth?

  • An astronomer has calculated what he believes are the odds that life exists elsewhere in the universe, and they’re quite favorable.
  • Based on his calculations, David Kipping of Columbia University says the odds of some form of extraterrestrial life are around 9:1 in favor.
  • The odds of intelligent life, while still favorable, are lower at 3:2.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Do you think aliens exist? It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves, and generally speaking, I think the majority of people think there’s something out there, even if none of us really know what it is. Scientists would love to find the answer, of course, but while they wait for E.T. to crash-land on their doorstep they’ve crunched the numbers to see how likely it is that aliens are even out there.

In a new paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, David Kipping, assistant professor of astronomy at Columbia University, lays out the hard and not-so-hard data.

  • South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) concluded a study of nearly 300 patients who retested positive after surviving COVID-19.
  • The KCDC explained the patients were not infectious, and they were immune to the disease despite some of them showing symptoms.
  • The second positive test likely detected dead fragments of the virus. As a result, KCDC changed its approach to handling people who test positive again.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

An increasing number of alarming reports have said in the past few weeks that some COVID-19 patients who recovered tested positive for the novel coronavirus a second time. Doctors were unable to explain these occurrences, but believed that it was unlikely those patients had actually been reinfected.

However, countries like China placed them in quarantine to observe them. Similar reports came from other countries as well, including Korea, where the local CDC reported in mid-April that hundreds of patients had tested positive again. The medical authority observed the evolution of the new patients in the weeks since then, and delivered the best possible preliminary news about coronavirus reinfections: It’s not a relapse.

  • A new study reveals that hurricanes are indeed getting more powerful on a decade-by-decade basis.
  • The study also draws strong links between more powerful storms and man-made climate change resulting in warmer ocean waters.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If it seems to you that the massive storms rolling in from the ocean every year are causing more and more damage than the years before, you’re not alone. Scientists are noticing the trend, too, and a new study published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin Madison and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) lays out the evidence in stark detail.

With almost four decades of satellite data to go by, the researchers compared the prevalence of particularly damaging hurricanes from year to year, noting a clear uptick in the frequency of major storms.

Republicans don’t think you need another stimulus check right now

  • Millions of Americans are still waiting to receive their coronavirus stimulus check from the federal government, a process the IRS says could take many more weeks to be completed — but some national lawmakers are already talking about a stimulus check round two.
  • House Democrats have already passed a massive new coronavirus stimulus package, which includes money for additional direct payments to most Americans. But Republicans aren’t fully on board.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Democrats in the US House of Representatives passed a massive new coronavirus relief package last week, a $3 trillion bill that, among other things, appropriates money for another round of direct stimulus payments. That would follow the initial round of direct payments that started going out in the wake of the pandemic, which provide up to $1,200 for individual taxpayers and up to $2,400 for married couples (plus $500 for each eligible child).

This week, that money started to be disbursed to some taxpayers in the form of a prepaid debit card, that’s ready to be used immediately, instead of a paper check that would first have to be deposited into a bank account.

Coronavirus pandemic could delay 60% of scripted TV shows to 2021

  • TV show productions around the world were forced to stop due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • A new report predicts that 60% of the shows that were scheduled to air in the second half of 2020 will now be delayed to 2021, and 10% will be canceled outright.
  • Unscripted reality shows will recover much more quickly than scripted programming.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Throughout the novel coronavirus pandemic, television has been a necessary escape as we keep our distance from one another in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. Movies have been releasing days, weeks, and even months ahead of schedule, and shows that have made their debuts over the past few months — most notably Netflix’s Tiger King and ESPN’s The Last Dance — have become viral sensations.

Broadcast and streaming TV has helped to keep us sane as we lock ourselves indoors, but with production on pause across the industry, it won’t be long before the content that networks and streaming services have accumulated starts to dry up. Citing data from Ampere Analysis, Deadline reports that up to 60% of the scripted titles that were scheduled to air before the end of the year will be delayed, and 10% will be canceled outright.
