  • A new study from Spain attempted to determine the real scope of the novel coronavirus infection in the country.
  • Researchers tested people for coronavirus antibodies, a sign they may have been infected and survived COVID-19 already.
  • The data suggests that nearly 5% of Spain’s population may have been infected, and 90% of them went undiagnosed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Throughout Europe and the US, countries and states are slowly opening up their economies following weeks of social distancing measures that cost millions of people their jobs. The threat hasn’t disappeared, however, and people still risk contracting COVID-19 even in regions where the curve has been flattened significantly. That’s because the world’s coronavirus problem is much bigger than we thought. A study from Spain, one of the hardest-hit countries in the world, reveals that far more people caught the disease than the official numbers show.

However, not enough of the population got infected for Spain to reach so-called herd immunity, which would reduce the risk of infections significantly. Moreover, the research shows the virus has been able to spread in communities with terrifying speed, and that it’s not done spreading yet. Finally, the study offers a better perspective of COVID-19’s real fatality rate and the risk associated with opening the economy to normal levels.

These coronavirus face masks have a hole so you can sip cocktails

  • Along with social distancing, face masks are increasingly becoming a familiar sight in cities around the country and are regarded as helpful in limiting the spread of the coronavirus.
  • One enterprising artist has come up with a unique twist on face mask designs — adding a straw hole, so that even though you may be worried enough about catching the COVID-19 coronavirus to want to wear a face mask, it doesn’t have to get in the way of your drinking.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The rift in America over face masks keeps getting worse.

Retailers near where I live are increasingly posting signs that announce something along the lines of — if you want to shop here, you have to wear a mask to come inside. It’s believed that masks, as a complement to social distancing, can help limit the spread of the virus by blocking germs you might expel. Since, remember, people can be infected with the coronavirus and not know it, so seemingly healthy people have a role to play in limiting the spread. Meanwhile, everyone has been sending the American public mixed signals, shall we say, when it comes to the importance of masks. President Trump refuses to wear one. Regulations vary from city to city. People have gotten into fistfights at stores over masks – and, as if all that wasn’t enough, the CDC recently said it doesn’t have any data about whether or how much face masks work in providing protection from the coronavirus. Confused yet?

Netflix video quality will no longer be downgraded because of coronavirus

  • Netflix streams in some European countries have reverted back to normal HD quality after Netflix reduced streaming bitrates back in March.
  • Netflix’s initial decision came in response to the coronavirus pandemic which left millions of people in countries across the world stuck at home and glued to their TVs.
  • YouTube and Amazon in March also downgraded their video quality in Europe, but there’s no word as to when they’ll revert back.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus leaving tens of millions of people across the world stuck at home, Netflix back in March decided to downgrade the quality of its video streams in Europe from HD to standard definition. The impetus behind the decision was to reduce the strain on ISPs and to ensure a robust viewing experience for all subscribers.

Now, with many cities across the globe slowly but surely starting to reopen, FlatpanelsHD is reporting that Netflix streams have returned to their normal HD quality in a number of European countries.

There’s no question that Apple’s AirPods are the best-selling true wireless earbuds on Amazon right now, which makes sense since regular AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro are all on sale with deep discounts. In fact, they’re the best-selling Bluetooth earbuds out there even when they’re listed at full price. They’re certainly not the only option though, and there’s a killer deal right now at Amazon for anyone who values sound quality more than popularity or style.

The Bose SoundSport Free True Wireless Earbuds have more than 11,000 5-star ratings on Amazon and for good reason. They offer a compact design, solid battery life, and the fantastic sound quality you’ve come to expect from any Bose audio product. Needless to say, you’ve also come to expect hefty price tags from Bose products, and the SoundSport Free buds are definitely pricey at $199. Thanks to some deep discounts right now at Amazon though, you can snag a pair for either $139 or $149 depending on which color you choose. At either price, you’re paying less than the $169 they cost on Black Friday so you can rest assured that you’re getting a great deal.

Bose SoundSport Free, True Wireless Earbuds, (Sweatproof Bluetooth Headphones for Workouts and…: $139.00 – $149.00

Here’s some key info from Amazon’s product page:

No wires mean no limits. And Bose sound sport free headphones are completely wireless, so you can enjoy total freedom of movement with nothing not even a single cord in your way. The acoustic package is designed to deliver sound so clear and powerful it will motivate you to go faster, lift heavier and train longer. Bluetooth technology transmits music from your phone to the headphones, so music plays reliably and consistently whether your phone is in your nearby gym bag, pocket, or strapped to your arm.

Worried your earbuds will fall out during your workout? Don’t be. “Stay hear” sport tips are built to stay comfortably in place, even when you’re training hard. And if you can’t find an earbud, all hope is not lost. You can track down lost earbuds using the Bose connect app’s “find my buds” feature. It shows when and where the earbuds were last connected to your phone. Still having trouble finding your earbuds? Don’t worry, an audio signal from the headphones can Alert you to their location.

Don’t sweat your sweat (or the weather) either, because water repellent materials Inside the earbuds help keep moisture out. Off a single charge, the earbuds play for up to five hours, and the fully charged case gives you an additional 10 hours of music, ready to play when you are. When not in use, the charging case is designed with built-in magnets to keep the earbuds securely in place. Play or pause tracks and access your phone’s Siri or your Google assistant right from the earbud. You can even take phone calls, through the right earbud only.

Coronavirus test used by Trump and others at White House may be wrong half the time

  • A coronavirus test used by the White House and touted by Trump as “game-changing” may miss up to half of COVID-19 infections, a new paper suggests.
  • The research was conducted by New York University but has not yet been peer-reviewed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When the novel coronavirus pandemic began spreading across the planet, scientists scrambled to come up with tests that could rapidly detect if someone was infected or not. Unfortunately, after months of using various tests, it’s become clear that some are more reliable than others. In a new study by New York University, researchers put the test developed by Abbott Laboratories through its paces.

The researchers compared results from that test, called the ID NOW molecular COVID-19 rapid test, with the results from other tests known to be more accurate, but also more time-consuming. They found that the ID NOW tests — which President Trump has promoted during a public briefing and is used at the White House — missed at least one-third of coronavirus infections that were accurately detected by other tests.

  • Though millions of Americans are still waiting to receive their coronavirus stimulus checks, which were part of the $2.2 trillion emergency relief bill Congress passed at the end of March, congressional leaders are ready to debate an all-new emergency bill that could include money for a new round of direct payments to Americans
  • This new coronavirus stimulus package, however, may not end up resembling the last coronavirus stimulus in at least one respect, however — Republicans seem less inclined for this bill to be as large, which might put the idea of new stimulus checks in danger.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A spokesman for US Senate finance committee chairman Chuck Grassley told NBC News this week that a massive new coronavirus stimulus package pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and headed toward a vote tomorrow will be “DOA in the Senate.” For those of you hoping Congress might fund an additional round of direct coronavirus stimulus payments, following up on the first round of checks as large as $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for couples, that might be bad news.

Why? For starters, the $2.2 trillion measure Congress passed back in March was, at the time, the biggest such emergency relief legislation in US history. This new bill — which, among other things, proposes giving as much as $6,000 to households — would be even bigger. It’s a 1,800-page bill that also includes funding for everything from aid to state and local governments ($875 billion) and an extra $75 billion for coronavirus testing, as well as $75 billion for mortgage relief.

I remember when Apple first announced it had plans to release a smartwatch I thought to myself, “that might just be the nerdiest thing I’ve ever seen.” Fast-forward to the present day, and there is absolutely no way I could ever be without my Apple Watch. It’s the greatest iPhone accessory Apple has ever made for one simple reason: it replaces the iPhone for so many things. You no longer need to take out your phone to see notifications, respond to texts and iMessages, control smart home devices with Siri, and so much more. You also have access to zero-touch information thanks to the Apple Watch’s complications, which are basically the widgets Apple has never allowed on the iPhone’s home screen.

Spend a day or two with the Apple Watch and you’ll see how great it is. You’ll also never be able to go back to life without one. Now happens to be the perfect time to discover for yourself what all the full is about because Amazon is selling the Apple Watch at its lowest price ever. Pick up a 38 mm Apple Watch Series 3 right now for just $179, or you can jump to the larger 42 mm Apple Watch Series 3 for $209. Those are both $20 discounts compared to the new lower price of the Series 3 model, but these prices definitely won’t last long.
