Astronomers spot tempting ‘Super-Earth’ in a nearby star system
- A Super-Earth was spotted near the galactic center, and it appears to be in the habitable zone of its star.
- The planet is larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune, and its star is just 10% as massive as our own Sun.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If mankind ever does manage to make it off this planet in large enough numbers to sustain a civilization elsewhere, we’ll obviously want to find a world that is similar to Earth. Astronomers have already discovered a number of potential candidates that offer the slim hope of eventually becoming our “Earth 2,” and researchers from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand just added another to the list.
It’s an exoplanet called Kepler-62f, and it’s a member of an exclusive group of “Super-Earths” that reside within the habitable zones of their respective stars. In the case of Kepler-62f, though, there are a number of questions that remain to be answered before we can declare it suitable for life.

Coronavirus quarantines are changing our streaming habits
- With everyone stuck at home right now, thanks to coronavirus quarantines, Netflix and other streaming services are one of the most popular entertainment choices at the moment. If you’re not one of the millions of gamers engrossed in Animal Crossing right now, that is.
- New data shows that people’s streaming habits are changing in noticeable ways, with more people gravitating to animated and family fare during this stressful and uncertain time.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The longer these coronavirus quarantines stretch on, the more a subtle shift is increasingly reflecting itself in the kinds of TV shows and movies that streaming audiences are turning to for entertainment and a bit of relief from the awful state of the world.
Me, personally, I’ve been using this time to catch up on shows and movies that have been on my list for a while, which can include everything from Netflix’s super-popular international hit series Money Heist to shows like The Good Place. It’s a source of entertainment that’s been invaluable, especially since there’s a pretty intense Animal Crossing: New Horizons player in my household who spends a lot of time caught up in Nintendo’s latest. Among the general public, meanwhile, the longer the quarantines drag on it seems that audiences may be gravitating to a specific kind of streaming content in particular.

‘Black Widow’ and other Marvel movies won’t launch on Disney+
- Disney confirmed that its big blockbuster films will not launch on its streaming service, as the studio prefers theatrical releases.
- The list includes Marvel’s upcoming movies from MCU Phase 4, which have already been delayed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
- Black Widow is expected to launch in early November, assuming COVID-19 containment will allow such plans to go forward.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus health crisis has crippled the global economy, and millions of people have lost their jobs in the past few months. Some sectors have been hit harder than others, like sports, travel, and entertainment. Basically, anything that involved leaving the house and meeting other people was canceled or postponed. That applied to simple things like going to the restaurant or the gym, but also to business events, sports competitions, concerts, and movie launches.
Several countries have started to reopen their economies, but we’re looking at baby steps meant to gauge whether it’s safe to return to a life closer to the one we had before COVID-19. Not everything will reopen at once, and it may be a while until we can go to cinemas. Or until we’ll want to go without worrying about how a virus can travel inside a closed space ventilated by air conditioning. The good news is that some films will be launched directly for streaming, like Frozen 2 and Onward. The bad news is that the biggest blockbusters will still hit theaters before they start streaming, including Disney’s Marvel movies, which will all be saved for theatrical releases.

Coronavirus has gotten so bad in the US, Doctors Without Borders sent a team here
- Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization well-known for operating in war zones and in places where health care systems have collapsed in order to provide suffering populations with the care they need.
- Because the coronavirus has gotten so bad in one part of the US, the organization recently dispatched a team here, to operate in the US for the first time.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Most of the time, when you read about doctors associated with the medical humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders, it involves their work in conflict zones around the world — places like Yemen and Syria, where the consequences of war have ravaged the population — and, in the group’s own words, in hotspots where they’re called upon to “provide basic medical services when national health systems have collapsed.”
So in yet another indicator of how acute the coronavirus crisis has gotten in the US, Doctors Without Borders has now sent a team here. This is the first time this has ever happened, giving us something in common with places like Afghanistan, Iran, and Venezuela, among other countries where Doctors Without Borders has a presence.

Netflix saved the average viewer from 219 hours of ads in 2019
- Netflix saves subscribers from watching hundreds of hours of commercials every year.
- Data shows that every hour of network or cable programming includes up to 18 minutes of ads, and Americans spend close to 4 hours a day watching TV.
- The average Netflix subscriber spends two hours a day on the service (and likely even more during the pandemic), avoiding 219 hours of commercials over the course of a year.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Streaming services have taken on a new significance in the age of the novel coronavirus pandemic. One of the best ways that we can stop the spread of this virus is by staying home, but keeping ourselves entertained while couped up for weeks on end can be challenging. Therefore, streaming service usage has skyrocketed in recent weeks, but of the plethora of options available, Netflix has a major advantage over many of its rivals: No ads.
Many streaming services have tiers that include ads, but no matter how much you pay for Netflix, you will never see a commercial while watching Stranger Things, Ozark, or Extraction. With all of that in mind, Reviews.com did the math and attempted to quantify the amount of time Netflix saves its viewers from ads every year.

This inflatable e-bike can be crammed just about anywhere
- Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed an electric bike that is so compact it can fit into a backpack.
- The bike, called Poimo, has an inflatable body that would protect pedestrians as well as the rider in the case of an accident.
- The current version of Poimo is just a prototype, and the team that developed it says the final product will be lighter and even more portable.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Significantly fewer people are worried about commuting these days, what with an ongoing global health crisis and all that, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation in personal transportation. The Poimo electric bike, developed at the University of Tokyo is most definitely innovative, and it also happens to fit in a backpack.
The secret to the Poimo’s ultra-portability is that it’s inflatable. Yep, it’s an inflatable electric bike that you can actually ride. It looks a little bit silly, but that’s a small price to pay for being able to pull a vehicle out of your backpack.

Elon Musk emerges victorious in fight to reopen Tesla factory
- After a tense stand-off, Tesla will be allowed to reopen its manufacturing plant in California next week.
- The approval comes after Tesla sued Alameda County for refusing to let it resume operations at its Fremont factory.
- In a viral tweet sent out this week, Musk initially volunteered to be arrested if authorities decided to enforce the state’s stay-at-home order.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Even by Tesla’s standards, the saga involving Elon Musk’s battle to reopen the company’s manufacturing plant in Fremont, California has been nothing short of bizarre. Tesla, if you recall, sued Alameda County over the weekend for not letting it resume business operations and reopen its Fremont factory.
The lawsuit, as you might expect, was accompanied by a tweet from Musk wherein the Tesla CEO blasted the Alameda Health Officer as “ignorant” and for acting “contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!”

The first astronauts to fly in a SpaceX ship just entered quarantine
- NASA’s first crewed launch from US soil in nearly a decade is rapidly approaching.
- Two astronauts will be launched to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
- The launch will be the final demonstration of the Crew Dragon before it is certified for regular use by NASA.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of NASA’s most important goals — the launch of astronauts from US soil for the first time since the Space Shuttle era — is very, very close to being reached. NASA teamed up with both SpaceX and Boeing for its Commercial Crew Program, tasking both companies with building spacecraft that could safely and swiftly deliver astronauts to the International Space Station. SpaceX is first to arrive at the finish line, but crossing it means a successful launch and journey to the orbiting laboratory.
Now, with just weeks left before the May 27th launch date, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley have entered pre-flight quarantine to ensure they remain healthy for the trip and their stay aboard the ISS.

Chrome is getting an incredible feature we didn’t know we needed
- Google added a new feature called tab groups to Chrome Beta on Wednesday.
- Tab groups allow users to group multiple tabs together in the Chrome browser and label them with names and colors so that they are easier to arrange and keep track of.
- Tab groups will be available in a new version of desktop Chrome rolling out next week, but you can test the feature out for yourself right now by downloading Chrome Beta.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget the day that BGR executive editor Zach Epstein shared his screen with me and incidentally revealed the unthinkable number of tabs he had open in his browser. In this line of work, tab management is vital, but everyone operates differently. Personally, I start to get antsy if I have more than 5 or 6 tabs open, so I do whatever I can to consolidate them as quickly as possible while I’m working.
There’s no “correct” way to manage to your tabs (although even thinking about Zach’s way gives me anxiety), but on Wednesday, Google added a new feature to Chrome Beta that will make managing tabs easier than ever: tab groups. The feature allows Chrome users to right click on any of their open tabs and group them together with custom names and colors. Once you create a tab group, you can move it around like a standard tab.

Doctors just discovered another promising coronavirus therapy
- Doctors from Cedars-Sinai treating severe COVID-19 cases used a therapy that’s usually reserved for muscular dystrophy patients.
- The team gave patients cells grown from human heart tissues, helping them get off ventilators. Four of the six coronavirus patients who received the therapy were later discharged.
- This is likely stem-cell therapy, considering previous work from the doctors, and echoes recent findings from a team at Mount Sinai, New York.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus can’t be killed or stopped with the current drugs that we have, the WHO said earlier this week. Dr. Anthony Fauci said separately that it’s virtually impossible to eradicate the virus. But there are plenty of therapies that can be used to reduce the severity of COVID-19 and shorten the recovery period.
The WHO is studying four or five of the best drugs for the new illness, but there are plenty of new lines of therapy that are discovered on a regular basis. The latest one consists of a treatment that’s usually given to Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients.
